- The Quick and the Dead is a 1995 western film directed by Sam Raimi and starring Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio. The story focuses on "The Lady" (Stone), a gunfighter who rides into the 1878 Wild West town of Redemption, controlled by the ruthless John Herod (Hackman). The Lady joins a deadly dueling competition in an attempt to exact revenge for her father's death.
Writer Simon Moore's script for The Quick and the Dead was purchased by Sony Pictures Entertainment in May 1993, and actress Sharon Stone signed on as both star and co-producer. Development was fast tracked after director Sam Raimi's hiring, and principal photography began in Old Tucson Studios in Arizona on November 21, 1993. Distribution duties were covered by Sony-owned TriStar Pictures and Columbia Pictures. The Quick and the Dead was released in the United States on February 10, 1995 to a dismal box office performance, and received mixed but generally favorable reviews from critics.
This was Woody Strode's final performance (the film is dedicated to him), as well as the last theatrical release of Roberts Blossom.
This movie had top shelf Oscar winners and Gene stole the show.He has that gift of convincing the audience of the character he's playing.
He definitely has a gift. Always a powerful performance. Lets admit it, there will never be a better Lex Luther

What is so amazing about this film is in the casting. When this film came out the only marque name in the cast was Gene Hackman. Sharon Stone was a name because she was hot of Basic Instinct, but DiCaprio and Russell Crowe were complete nobodies. David Keith and the guy who played Ace Hanlen weren't names they were actors you remembered. But when you look at this film 20 or so years later you would think this was a big budget all star cast film, but it wasn't, it just aged very well.
@@ibramblebushTotally agree. People often mistake the time of film production and the time actors get popular.
That’s the point of acting you gotta be believable. That’s why Leonardo DiCaprio is trash because every single movie he’s in is literally he’s not believable.
That little "huh" at 0:50 in acknowledgment of Cantrell telling him he was planning to kill him anyway is pure gold. So subtle, I came here just for that part.
Agreed, that "huh" is so good.
Ah.. Good catch. I never noticed that before.
It's like saying "Good luck with that."
Totally agrre that "huh" is so good it's like taunting and prepotential at the same time.
i always thought he was saying huh, like i guess my rule change isn't a problem.
but people are saying it's saying oh, good luck? or taunting?
also i always thought old news means the hired guy's passing is old news. but did he mean old news like the GUY himself is now old news?
n is there an answer about if john new the lady was packing at the dinner, or did he honestly get his lighter at a lucky time?
It gives me chills when Sharon Stone notices the townspeople are praying for the fighter they hired. And later when the lady lovers her head and drops her cross when the fighter has lost.
They should have hired Bob Mundon for the job but that would bring a quick dead end to the movie.

Gene Hackman is sooooo freaking good in this. He makes the movie without a doubt
Hackman is like a wild west Satan in this film! Awesome acting indeed!
Mark Breaux In Unforgiven too.
Well his name was Herod in the movie, which also was the name of the king in the bible, Herod, who had every male child in Israel/ Jerusalum killed attemting to kill Jesus, i would definitely say your summation of Herod is correct in that he is evil. Naming a child herod is just as evil as naming one satan or lucifer.
@@MobHeataEnt
I never seen Hackman's character in Unforgiven as a villain. He was a decent sheriff who enforced laws and protected his town. Sure, it's heavily implied he was once a gunslinger and possibly an outlaw in his past, but I don't see how that makes him a bad guy.
The main character, William, is the true villain in Unforgiven.
Until you find out he cheated using the clock tower
@@12227UserName well he tortured and killed poor Ned
Definitely not a good guy!
Of all the Same Raimi movies I've ever seen, this feels like the best. His style on cinematography along with the script and powerhouse performances of the likes of Hackman, Crowe and DiCaprio make this an Oscar worthy flick. That zoom in and out of the Clock before one of the Duels like the rapid beating of a heart was so good.
Agreed. I love Gene Hackman's characters because they're always so real. Not pure good or pure evil...just human...both darkness and light.
nah, this dude's just a straight-up villain. If Hackman had grown a moustache he'd have twirled it at every opportunity. But that's how Herod works: He's just a BAD GUY. He's designed for you to admire certain bits of him but hate the totality of him.
David Keith always fantastic in every role he's in.

Keith David's most epic fight was against Roddy piper in They Live 😁

he was brilliant in "men at work"
He from great actor in many classic movies to become voice acting from many great modern cartoon like Adventure time and Amphibia
People overlook how brillant John Herod was in this movie. He was the fastest in the West, but in order to stay that way he would lure other gunfighters with this tournament. Instead of Herod having to track them down and kill them, he brought them to him. Right into his web.
It was pretty much like an open invitation to challenge the Devil himself for his throne and the control of his dominion.
Which is why I wonder people wouldn’t fight fair on him. I mean, he’s already cheating. So why not?
@@moonmoon2479 Herod didn't cheat, he didn't need to, no one was faster then him. Maybe Court and the Kid were AS fast, but Herod did not need to cheat
@@ParagonRex Herod used the sound of the clock a second before the strike of noon to time his shot, not the strike itself. @@katherineberger6329 I get what your saying and I would agree with it, if not the backstory on Herod tells a different story. The story of him killing all 4 of the Torrance brothers and his stunning fast kill of Ace Hanlon, which was not timed by the clock. John Herod, had the speed of the devil and the accuracy of hell. He did not need the sound of the clock to help him,
Gene Hackman, what an actor, could convincingly play a hero or a villain!

Such a shame they killed off Clay Cantrell so early in the movie. He was a cool character. I especially love how he used the Bridgeport Rig instead of a traditional holster.
@Dean Morrison Yeah, it's specially designed for quick draw, plus it gives you the ability to aim and fire without drawing. That gives an advantage in a quick-draw gunfight.
@Dean Morrison How so?
@Dean Morrison Well I've never seen that rig, but I'll take your word for it. In general though, a Bridgeport Rig would be a good setup to have in a quick draw contest, at least compared to most traditional holsters of the era.
@Dean Morrison No I haven't, but I've seen how it works. The biggest advantage is that it lets you fire without drawing, which is great for gunfights at extremely close range (the distance where most real life shootouts actually take place)
@Dean Morrison I just don't see how you could get any faster than a rig that lets you fire without actually drawing.
