I've had one for a couple of years and its by far the best home practice/songwriting and small gig amp I;ve ever played. I would go so far as to say that if these were available 45 years ago I would have been famous, it makes you want to play.
Recently bought this amp and I have to say it's amazing for it's purpose. As a bedroom practice amp it's perfect. The models and effects sound great even at low volumes. I've had a couple tube amps but they need to be cranked to high volumes to get the best out of them when you want high gain, and that just isn't practical for a small bedroom. The Cube XL is my favourite practice amp by far.
I have the Cube 40GX ...sounds amazing to me; but I don't have any experience with anything else, just now learning guitar for first time... When I get good enough to make it sing, I definitely want to get a good tube amp for home studio recording of my originals.. I've heard amazing things about the Fender Little Champ '57 reissue. It's around 1k USD , about as much as my guitar was .. Supposed to be one of the best for mic recording ; I think Eric Clapton used it on one of his albums.
Thanks very much for this. I found a Cube 40xl secondhand - they seem to be rarer than hen's teeth, presumably because people who bought them really like them. Even though I have the first generation of the Cube 30, and like it very much, your review was very helpful to me.
I have had this amp for a few years now and it has so many great presets and effects, brilliant for imitating other sounds or creating your own, and it is fucking loud! You can fill a large hall with this thing no problem, even outside gigs
hold tunerswitch for 1 second and you can use also for chromatic tuning!! its a great amp for home and use small gigs....have made a speaker out and use it with cabs. the 80XL have a speaker output standard!.
You may like the Cube 80, be sure to get the footswitch, I bought the boss fs6, to be able to switch the effects and the channel. It has plenty of gain with the rectifier model, I really hope it works for you. I think some day people will get out of the stigma of the solid state amps and the hating. The peavy is a pretty darn good amp so far I'm really happy, it has taken me a while to get it set up right, tube swaps and noise gate. Much study tweakage, an e.q. and ts9 it's working out.
I know the older XL series has more features than the new GX . (I have the 40GX as my first amp, for my new American Fender Strat) .. Has anyone compared them both? Just wondering if sound quality is better on the 40XL ... I've heard someone say the 80XL definitely sounds better than 80GX.
THe 80xl is loud enough, in fact most amps are loud enough for clubs with the amp mic'd. That being said I had an 80xl and it seemed like a great little amp for at home practice, but lacks a certain sonic quality you need for playing in public places, as every place I have ever played at had different sound characteristics. Maybe a sonic stomp would help, but I'm returning the cube.
that's a great choice, , i was intrigued by the cosm amp modeling of the cube and wish I could have had access to play one before I bought it. the on board effects were mediocre, Live and learn, I just ordered a Peavy ValveKing 212,
Hello, I just got this baby, used and I love it. However, I get this buzz noise, from inside, like something is vibrating wrong, The sound is crystal clear, but when you turn up the volume, something vibrates inside and I don´t know if it is broken (doesn´t sound like that) if there is a metal part ringing in resonance or if it is normal, o whatever. Any ideas? (I tried to open it but it´s built like a tank)
can you have delay on the solo channel too, as well as the loop playing?... oh and please play metal when using a metal sound...and use that lovely custom lp too..:P
that was posted a while ago and i wouldnt consider a cube now too tinny for me and i ended up with a very basic all valve blackheart b15 if i want effects i can just add a box of tricks and as far as gigging goes that was just a dream of mine.hehe
I have a gig coming up, just myself & drummer. We're going to have a full drumkit, and I'll be playing various songs with Fender Strat, 12-strings and resonator in enclosed venue that can hold up to 240 people. Would this amp powerful enough? I like Roland cubes because of their big sound in a small box. I have a micro cube which I use for buskin and sometimes on the stage through PA desk
I don`t know anything about anything, but my logic tells me that 40W is too small for a gig, i`m looking at the 80W and then the Laney Ironheart 120W for thundering arenas :)
I have a vavle king peavey 212 amp and me personally it can get loud but everytime I look for higher gain it get pretty noisey. Im looking forward to purchasing the roland cube 80 xl. Because it has alot built in effects in it chorus reverb delay looper button. I find that very difficult to pass up
Dear Everybody: Please try this amp for yourself before purchasing it. I recently tried the metal settings out at my local guitar shop and COMPLETELY hated it. This new feeling of hatred was in complete contrast to all of the video reviews that I had watched online. Sincerely, Some Guitarist Somewhere
Dude ,you can not beat this amp .The Roland Cube 80 xl is a kick ass amp. If you mic it for a big venue you will be satisfied. 80watts is alot of power. I had a BC 60 and I never had to mic it. Get it and enjoy it. Doc Rose in Florida.
@wretcheddog Don't man, maybe Roland is a good option, but Mustangs are a piece of shit, are built like shit, they are pretty cheap (in materials) and the tone sucks, Also because of all of those stupid effects, the amp gets pretty stupidly hot and the tone is just shit. Mustangs are built like shit. Buy anything, but not a Mustang.

Excellent, I just got a used one for 50.00 $ , cleaned it up , looks and sounds amazing !
Thank you ...
one of the best demos of this amp out there.
Recently bought this amp and I have to say it's amazing for it's purpose. As a bedroom practice amp it's perfect. The models and effects sound great even at low volumes.

I don't give a shit for any other amps. Roland is king. Played on all other brands and nothing has what this amp has to offer.

This is a very good demonstration, thanks for posting guys. Best, Jonas
@bluebrotherstudios Love to, but our request for a review never came to anything. Will keep trying
just bought one used, 50$ CAN. ...can't go wrong, for that price....I've got the "Micro" as well.....gonna try and do some "stereo" stuff!
hold tunerswitch for 1 second and you can use also for chromatic tuning!!

what everyone wants to know is this combo loud enough for gigs or is it best to spend the extra £100 for the XL 80 ?
I played this amp in a talent show last year .Seemed nice ,but an 80 Xl would do the trick

the lick he was looping was wicked !
Excellent review - thanks.
Is this good at bedroom level or too powerful?
Thanks
Nice Review. I Wish you pumped them out more frequently though :-(
Can you review the Moog Skinny Phatty? Cheers guys! Love your channel.

Good, straightforward demo.

Nice review.
Any chance of a Roland AC-33 review?

Hissing sound when on silent, right?
what is the recommended foot-switch for the cube 40XL and can the same foot switch be used for the 20XL as well?
Shame he didn’t use that beautiful LPC in the background.
I want one of these but I keep hearing about this "hissing" issue because of a non-grounded power cable.. Any current info on this?
Yes you can.
Please review the Slim Phatty!
do you think it has a good distortion?
You should do the new Fender Mustang Amp...just saying...
thanks for your rapid reply... ;)
I am a heavy metal guitarist and i am thinking of getting this amp, am i making the right decision?
Reply as soon as possible
