The going to class part is so true, I am mostly trying my best to do that, but I am currently at the end of my third semester and some of the courses have like 10 people in the audience and we started with almost 700 in freshman year (big european university) its crazy how few people do it

EXACTLY!!! Though once everyone else doesn’t show up then we can get the best seats 😎. Sounds like a win-win

I’m thankful I ran into this. I’m quite interested by computer science, as a kid I would wonder how common devices worked from hardware to software, operating systems, algorithms, the engineering of a computer. What would be a good introduction to computer science for a person with no real grasp of how vast or deep it really is

Honestly I would try to learn a low level programming language like C or C++. There are plenty of books and videos out there for learning these languages and they don’t abstract too much away. As I mentioned in the video, I’m a fan of doing projects so you can try doing some fun projects in these languages. I’m trying to learn more about C so I’m working on a simple VM, but if you’re new you can try to just learn the basics of the language first! Best of luck and reach out if you need anything!

As a first-year college student who feels somewhat behind, I'd like to know how to learn a programming language and apply it to a project without becoming stuck in tutorial hell. I also enjoy data science, data analytics, business intelligence analytics, and front/backend (mostly back but love front) , but will I have to compete with students who have master's degrees for DS? If you were just starting out and wanted to stay with the best students and outperform your peers, what would you do?
I apologies for the paragraph. I'm just in a phase where I'm concerned that my work or projects won't be sufficient and I want to make sure I'm doing everything correctly and efficiently.

Honestly, don’t be afraid of tutorials! Just make sure you are learning stuff from them. I’ll do a project or two following tutorials and then try to do one by myself using similar concepts to help me practice. I also try to avoid chatGPT since it will oftentimes provide code and I fall into the trap of mindlessly copy/pasting it sometimes 😅. Though I find I learn best from written tutorials rather than videos on UA-cam, and I try to manually type the code to follow along to help build the muscle memory. The best advice I can give for someone who is just starting out and wants to outperform their peers is to build up a decent resume as quick as possible and apply to any internship you can find. I got my first internship 2 weeks before summer, so no matter what people say, it’s never too late. In order to beef up your resume you can find something specific that you enjoy in data science and make projects that dig deeper and deeper and show more knowledge and depth. I find this to be better than a bunch of shallow projects covering a variety of topics (though still try to know as much as you can about your field since you will be asked about everything during interviews). Another common trap I see CS/DS majors fall into is focusing entirely too much on school. Getting a 4.0 definitely doesn’t hurt, but if you don’t have projects or experience to add then most companies will still skip you over. At the end of the day, as long as you’re trying your best you will do great! I was far from the top of my class and I feel like I am doing very well!

@@geo4570 Fair but not necessarily true! It is a lot of effort but if you have friends that are CS majors or friends that like to study then you can do group study sessions (which for me ended up turning into group hangouts). I definitely should have studied more than I did, but then I wouldn’t have made a lot of the amazing friends I have today!
