  • What makes life so exhausting and miserable? You might hear some of your friends and family saying "the problem is capitalism". But what is Capitalism? Is it just how things are? Does it have specific rules? How do we know Capitalism when we see it? And if it is a specific system with specific rules, how do we change it or get rid of it?
Today we're joined with professor of sociology at New York University and editor of Catalyst, Vivek Chibber, to discuss the contents of his first ABC's of Capitalism pamphlets: Understanding Capitalism. In this talk he answers all of the questions above and more.
You can purchase the ABCs of Capitalism Pamphlets from Jacobin for just $10: jacobinmag.com...
You can download the PDFs here: bit.ly/abcsofc...
Here is Vivek's review of Erik Olin Wright's How To Be An Anticapitalist In The 21st Century, referenced in the Q/A: www.jacobinmag...

At one point the Prof said “academics like to glorify the democratic work place, work places suck, you can democratize it all you want...”
I think he is right but it’s important to remember that the point of the democratization of the workplace is to eliminate the employer class. Other socialist ideals like less work can then become attainable.

Exactly. Co-ops in the UK create 35% more jobs for every pound of turnover vs capitalist businesses. That means the work's shared out more humanely - and, as a bonus, more people have jobs.

Could we get him to elaborate on state vs nonprofit manager? Distinction may be kinda nuanced but 10% of US workers work in nonprofits now and we need to talk about this.

I work alongside union employed truck drivers when we deliver and pick up at the same shippers and consignee's. They are equally exploited as myself and my fellow drivers that are employed by a privately owned, regional carrier.

He said they were fighting racial discrimination, not racism. What does he think racism is if not racial discrimination?
Chibber seems to think that because capitalism can lead to racism, that means all racism is the result of capitalism. News for you Chibber: racism predates capitalism. So please let's not attack people who've been working hard for decades to reduce the amount of racial discrimination in society.
The rest of the lecture was good though.

Its okay, nothing really new if you're into left thinking. In the intro, he talks about how he had planned to do a polemical work, which was released, then a more academic, highly sourced work later, but he came down with Leukemia and it became difficult for him to finish it.

Capitalism is not the problem. The problem is the people we elect, allowing them to pass laws that undermine Capitalism. We could do as we did and tax these companies much more than we do and we could also pass laws to allow Unions to succeed much more easily as we did in the '30s. We could also stop the wage disparity that has gone out of control and Monopolies with some simple legislation as we had just a few short years ago. The problem with most people is they have no understanding of Socialism or Capitalism besides what they hear on the internet. Depending on who you listen to one or the other is bad. What people like not to talk about is that Socialism still has leaders and they still guide the masses just like Capitalism does. The difference is how you are allowed to succeed.

TheEsotericZebra they are just words and it’s only an insult if you let it be. I think it’s funny. To much emphasis is put into what others think of you or words they use to describe someone. It’s all pretty silly and stupid.

    • @crystalparker100

I agree with your ideas about our current capitalist system, but people are always the problem in every system. If we are going to have leaders (which I think is necessary), then we will always have corruption. That's why we have to continue to update our economic systems to evolve to the changes in industry and to skirt new forms of corruption brought on by people. Free markets have never existed and they will never exist due to corruption. We can do better than capitalism and we will.

crystalparker100 what made this country into the wealthy country it is and why we have the opportunities we do is because of Capitalism. We got away from taxing the rich properly. Socialism killed millions from famine which brought in Communism and Marxism which killed Millions more.

    • @crystalparker100
      @crystalparker100 4 роки тому +2

Why would you think that a critique of capitalism is a vote for socialism? Both capitalism and socialism have killed millions. We can do better, if people stop thinking so small.
The wealth of the US was built by slaves, children and poor workers. When unions asserted their power, capitalists took their companies to third world countries where they could exploit the labor of the poor in those countries. Capitalism is not the best we can do. We have evolved throughout all of history and we will continue to do so.
