  • A first ride of the electric Zero DSR/X. Hell of a machine super fast in sports mode. This really is a machine that handles great and performs like I did not expect. Come for a ride with me and let's have a look at the bikes of the future.

    You can buy a lot of good bikes for £20k that are much better equipped. The biggest barrier for electric bikes is definitely the range. 140 miles is just not enough and as no one has yet got fast charging sorted for bikes it makes it impractical if you can only do 100 - 140 miles and then you have to wait several hours to carry on. Imagine how long your recent Europe trip would have taken on this thing.

      You are right Grumpy 😆. It would be a great test for touring - but they wouldn't lend me a bike for a week. So the range of 100 (motorway speeds for touring let's say) and then the luggage, and then a pillion, what would be the range then? 70?? Just a thought

    All you doupters follow Mark Traveles as he is taking a Zero electric bike around the world and is now in India , ps I rode the bike at the ABR and thought that we are in the 21!st century.

      That's a fair comment Anna. I thought the ride was great and.....it's fast. If I was commuting 100 miles there and back to work, and in the centre of London, I would get one. The cost of the train ticket for the year would pay for the bike. It does make sense especially when you charge the bike at work. And of course, you can use it at the weekend for fun. I would have loved to have one for a week to give it a real world test ❤

    £20k gulp!! 😳 if I had that sort of money to throw around on a toy it would be a Rocket 3 and would outlast any battery bike.

    I think it is very expensive for what it is and 140 miles per charge in Eco and !00 in Sport is not good. Also, I hear people are still many problems with the charging bays not only in the UK but in Europe and beyond. I appreciate you can always plug it in but it might not always be possible to get access to a plug socket?
    Another downside unlike the combustion engines is you can't be heard coming, which I feel is a greater hazard for a bike!
    On the plus side, hardly any servicing/maintenance costs great acceleration and what seems like good handling and braking. You have to weigh up the pros and cons but £20K is a lot to shell out considering the alternatives for the same money, or in some cases less?

      If the use case was a commute to work and back - assuming 100 miles round trip, then as an alternate to a car, it sort of makes sense. But, you would still need a car for family etc etc. It does make sense, if the weather in the UK was dry for 300 days a year. Perfect for the same use case for mid to south Spain I guess. I would love one, but as I said, this would be a very expensive toy with me working from home. I simply could not justify the 20k for something which is great and different. I mean, the new Microlino bubble car costs the same price!!! And I could replace my car with that - just about 😆

    Running costs are considerably cheaper you say, yet it's cost is 14 grand more than your GoldStar now that buys you one hell of a lot of go go juice. It's far too much money with limited range and limited use other than commuting. Not for me that's for sure.

    Can't see it lasting ten year's on the same battery.

      @langdonfairchild1st805 There's a lot of data outhere measuring ev battery degradation. Its worth keeping in mind that battery chemistries and management systems vary massively, you can't make generalised assumptions. Zero's batteries are notoriously good. I would be very suprised if you didnt have 80 - 90% capacity after 100k miles.

    • @langdonfairchild1st805
      @langdonfairchild1st805 2 місяці тому

      @@tomblewomble3369 Was talking about ten year's of use of battery capacity. It's not working for the car industry very well. Battery has It's place but ten year's down the line most are worthless. The electric market for EV car's isn't doing to well. Then the cost to replace a lithium battery is astronomical to the value of the bike or car. At 500 to a thousand charge cycles its anywhere between two to for year's life span. The depreciation of EV vehicles is the other issue.

    • @tomblewomble3369
      @tomblewomble3369 2 місяці тому

      @langdonfairchild1st805 The owverwhelming majority of owners wont be fully cycling their battery every day, so its a moot point. The average UK rider does 3-4000 miles per year, i personally do 4000, and i ride regularly. The zero DSR/X has a 17kw battery, which represents 100 realistic miles mixed of real world mixed riding. 100 battery cycles gets you 10,000 miles and Zero batteries comfortably hold most of their capacity for 1000 - 1500 cycles. Hence 10 + years. To degrade the battery in 2.5 years, you would need to be riding 164 miles every single day without a break.

    How much 20k I don't think so Richard rather have 2 petrol bikes rd350lc and my triumph thank you if they made a range of 300 miles maybe and that is a maybe but no can stick the electricity where the sun doesn't shine 😉 the smell and noise for me thanks all the best on it when it runs out throw in cannel 😅😅😅

    This bike might be fast, it might be efficient but it's not a "real" motorbike.
    The noise; the vibration; the rawness of a powerful four-stroke; that's what makes bikers go for their ride-out.
