    dave didn't even care to verify her credit card debt; he already knew she was gonna buy that house regardless.. it's beyond me why she thought dave would cosign buying a house with $28k in car debt and thousands in credit card debt.. she says the rent is going up and thinks that automatically means buy a house for the amount her landlord is charging; they didn't even think to just go find another spot for $1000

  • @jsummer979
    @jsummer979 6 років тому +10

    I thought you can borrow against your 401k to be paid off in 5 years (or longer for a house (residence)). Dave only addressed this as straight puling the money out with penalty. What about a loan from the 401k? y understanding is that when you do that, you pay interest, but it's paid TO YOUR account, not to a bank.

    • @shapeshfters
      @shapeshfters 6 років тому +2

      jsummer979 Dave is aware of that. On past episodes he has said that the reason he doesn’t suggest that is if you were to lose the job that holds the 401k, then you are liable for the outstanding balance.

I think this country is lacking on how we educate children about money but I guess parents can't teach if they don't know themselves.

    Good Stuff Dave -- Like your style and practical thinking. There are so many radio shows, "investment seminars," real estate Gurus preaching anti-Ramsey, commons-sense ways to "leverage you money!" I recently sat in a one that started off by asking:: "how many of you follow Dave Ramsey; how many of you have a paid-off home mortgage?" In a room of about 200 attendees, I was one of about 10 that raised our hands, and was told that's the stupid stuff Dave got you guys to do; and so how much did that paid-off home earn for you?" You could have "leveraged" that $$$, bought 2 or 3 rental properties and earned passive-income 5 different ways!!! After that session some were actually looking at cashing in 401k's to invest in initiation fees, monthly fees and using the rest to buy homes or becoming passive investors in Apartments. Taking the hit and going all in in the hope of prospective riches. WOW!

    I don't understand why people think it's better to rent a house than to buy a house, when nowadays, it costs just as much to rent as it does to buy. When you buy, you're at least putting some of that money towards principal with each payment.
    If rent was cheaper (as it should be, and used to be), this would make sense since you're able to save up then buy in full, but when it's equally costly....?

    Rent around here everywhere is about double what a mortgage would cost or more. You can buy a $30,000 cheap house and rent it for $800 a month pretty reliably.

    401k will be taxed at an even higher rate when they are 60. Taxes will be increasing by more than 10% by the time they are 60 anyway.

    • @rosen380
      @rosen380 6 років тому

      (1) if you make $95k then you are taxed at 28% on the income. When you retired, your income is much lower, so what you pull out is taxed at a lower amount.
      (2) As far as tax rates in a couple of decades or more, source? Since I don't have 20 years to wait to finish this comment, lets just pretend you said it 20 years ago:
      1998-
      Tax Bracket Tax Rate
      $0.00+ 15%
      $42,350.00+ 28%
      $102,300.00+ 31%
      $155,950.00+ 36%
      $278,450.00+ 39.6%
      2018-
      $0.00+ 10%
      $19,050.00+ 15%
      $77,400.00+ 25%
      $156,150.00+ 28%
      $237,950.00+ 33%
      $424,950.00+ 35%
      $480,050.00+ 39.6%

    I realize this is an old video, but I'm curious if anyone can add to the experience if the context is a bit different. Does anyone know about companies that let you take a loan out from your 401k, rather than making a withdrawal?
    As I understand it, since it's a loan it doesn't count as income and isn't taxed, but to get that deal, you have to pay it back with interest (and you don't participate in market gains on money you have out on a loan)... but from what I understand, since you're taking a loan from your own account, the interest you pay goes back into that account rather than to the bank. Does that sound right, or does 401k loan interest still go off to some bank?

    • @magsteel9891

      Didymus Kek the interest goes to your account. But losing investment gains is a big hit.

      Also, if you lose your job you. Will have 60 days to pay the loan or roll it over. If you don’t roll it over you will be stuck paying massive penalties and taxes.

      @@ericevans5043 Not all companies penalize you for not working there anymore. I am still paying a loan back on 401k from an old job. Lef5t the accound open just to keep paying the loans. Moved the rest of the money into an IRA.

    What about taking a loan against your 401k instead of cashing it out? My company let’s me borrow up to half my 401k at a 4.5% a month for 60 months.

    Can someone explain why it’s not a good idea? you are going to get taxes anyways on 401k and I’f you put it toward a house you can avoid the penalty? Then why is it not a good idea to put a lot down on a home. Maybe have it half paid off .

Smh, so shamed that she's spreading spend/waste stupidity in my home state.

    Cheaper to rent than to buy a house. When something breaks the owner will fix it. When something breaks in your "banks" home you pay for it.

    Some folks are just stuck on stupid and can't get unstuck - and I've been there. Some people just have to hit rock bottom first. It's also the failed mentality that you NEED to have that car. There are some DANG GOOD cars out there for $10,000 and even less. I love rice and beans, anyone else? Throw in a little chili powder and some lime...
