Thank you for the tutorial. I was trying to figure out how to make a multicolor rounded border and while searching the web and multiple YT videos I did not find the answer until I came across your amazing video that teaches a lot good stuff for content creators. This is the best border video that I have found on YT.

Hi, Bill thanks for sharing this. I'm still stuck on Resolve 16, but was able to do make a fusion composition to create the kinds of borders I need from what I learned in your video. I wanted to go to the next step and create a macro that I can drag and drop onto a clip to create a border. Is that possible in Davinci Resolve 16?
Your videos are all so entertaining and filled with great information. I always learn something from them even if they are not focused on a topic that I'm looking for at the time. I watch every one, and often many times. Thanks for sharing.. great work. 👍
Hey! Great tutorial! Thank you very much! Just a quick question, if you could advise. I saved the Fusion settings to a file and added it to my list of Fusion Effects so I can drag-drop it to a new image in the Edit pane. However, I noticed that it applies it, but when I use Transform-Zoom, the border doesn't resize with the image. On the other hand, if I just copy paste the grouped settings from one image to another, or if I apply the saved settings from inside Fusion, the border resizes with the image. What am I missing? Thanks!
This is reall what I needed today for my videoproject but did not mastered yet! My learning curve is very slow but your videos help me tremendously. I was able to use your slide panel seetting in my last project! Thank you!
Awesome... really glad to hear that you were able to use the slide panel. It always takes a while to learn new things. but each time you try something new.. it gets a bit easier.

Hi.. You can frame anything using a similar technique... This one one auto sizes, but you could remove the auto sizing parts so you can adjust it to be whatever size you want.

I thought about using an instance, but decided to create a separate node because most of the settings between the 2 rectangles would need to be de-instanced... ex.. level, border width, border position, length , possibility the soft edge as well. To me it seemed a bit easier to connect a couple of properties instead of de-instancing. Just a preference.. Really appreciate your feedback... Thanks for watching!
Well, you are not a beginner anymore. Things are getting serious fast hahah. Thank you for this amazing lessons, the publish and connect to was revealing. A small question, why did you use Matte Control at the beginning of fusion nodes?
Thanks so much. With this setup, i needed to have a mask on the main image for rounded corners. The matteControl is not required. The mask could go directly into the mediaIn instead of the matte control.... BUT i want this to be easily reusable... When adding the effect it is just quicker to just connect the medain in to one place... Instead of having to connect the medaIN and then add the mask on it. There is probably a better way to do it but this seemed to work for me.
Thank you so much Mr. Justice for putting this tutorial together, and the many more you have published on your channel. I do have a few questions for you about these types of effects. I exported the settings for the basic animations using just the rectangles, nothing fancy, no rotation and such. The overall time for my video clip is 3 seconds, with the frames staring at 0 and ending at 71. Also, I followed your config to setup the transition at frame 9 and 10, moving 20 frames forward for the inner frame to take effect. The exported settings had a resolution (shot on a pixel 6 pro) of 1080 x 1920. Issue #1: If I import a video with the same resolution and apply the exported settings it works just fine, the problem I am having is if I import a video with resolutions of 1920 x 1080, then the settings does not work. I will have to edit the .settings files to match the resolutions. Furthermore, modifying the properties in the Inspector to resize it, creates a mess when I apply the settings in Fusion. Issue #2: The settings are based on the exported frame positions: 0 and ending on 71. If I import a video and trim out the beginning, thus extending beyond frame 71 (3 seconds) the effect wont work, it just shows the boarders without the border animation. I know you said to use the Keyframe extender, but how do you control that when the settings are set to position 0 and ending on 71? My apologies for the long explanation, but I have tried many different formats and different video resolutions/frame positions, seems to break the exported settings. Thank You! Regards, AC
Great instructional. How would I do this WITHOUT the image (skyscraper pic)? For instance, just have the animated border surrounding transparency? Thanks
There are probably a lot of different ways to do that. You could try using my highlight zoom effect. It lets you put a border around something in a video. ua-cam.com/video/8N-lrbvBvVw/v-deo.html
Nice video man. I got one question tho. Can i do this on png images with a transparent background (for example renders of videogame characters or logos)?
Can we use the edge detect node in any way to create sort of a mask. Essentially I am trying to have a fun background at the bottom and would like the background to show up only where the edge detect detects an edge. But can't seem to get it to work any help would be appreciated , thanks.
Thanks... for the matteControl.. it was just a convenient way to add the mask. Not sure if there is a better way but did not want to put the mask directly on the mediain. that would make it more difficult to reuse. Yeah... keyframe stretcher is not good but works (sometimes). Wish you could right click on a key frame and PIN it to the beginning/end of a clip.. color could change.. .ex. keyframe marker turns blue to indicate it is pinned to the end... Also... not sure if you saw my previous video on the 3D generator... (you usually comment)... but wanted to let you know that I mentioned you in the video for you help on setting up the circle motion path.....Thanks for the helpfeedback!
Did I miss something? I don't have all the "border style" in the inspector when I uncheck "solid" of the rectangle node. 😣 I guess something is wrong with my Davinci Resolve 16.1.2 EDIT: I updated to 16.2.2, and the "Borderl Style" is available in the inspector for the Rectangle node
@@WilliamJusticeMedia Yes 👌 But now I don't know if it was an personal issue with my install or if it's was something new in 16.2.2. *Anyway, I can follow your great tutorial now 😁*
Do you know whether it is possible to create the kind of frames that you are showing but with an empty space inside them? Basically creating just the frame itself, without combining it with any specific image (such as your skyscraper photo in this video)? My situation is I would like to use the frames to surround a text instead of an image and do so without violating the background that already exists. Thank you so much for you work - your tutorials are extremely helpful and accessible, especially to those who are just getting started with using the software. Take care!
Hi John, Yes, you can definitely create those type of frames... In fusion, you just need to have a background node (set it to whatever color you want your frame to be)... then add a rectangle mask into the blue input of the background. For the mask, uncheck solid and increase the border width.... When you view the background node you will see a colored rectangle border. You can adjust the rectangle size to fit around whatever you want. Hope that helps!
Hey William. I'm a big fan of yours. As a UA-cam creator myself I have switched over to DaVinci Resolve a few weeks ago as my goto editor. I watch many DaVinci Resolve videos and YOURS are my ultimate favorite. Love the projects that you do. Very creative stuff, and you're not a bore to watch. Yeah, you should have many times more subs than you do. I searched on "Davinci Resolve" and I had to scroll down like forever before I finally found one of your videos (this one). That's not good. I think you need to do some additional SEO for your videos. I notice you don't use many tags. Add as many as allowed. Be sure to include your title in your description, like this one "This video is about adding dazzling border animations & effects", for example. I WANT YOU TO SUCCEED BECAUSE YOU MAKE DOPE VIDS! Keep sharing, including your gimmes on your website. Feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions. my channel name at gmail is my contact.
Hi...Thanks for your comments. I hope the switch to Davinci is going smoothly. There is a lot to learn, but the basics should be pretty easy to pickup. I am learning and always looking for tips and advice to help me out and improve my channel. I will definitely use your tips. Thanks so much for sharing!. Even the little things can sometimes make a huge difference. Just finishing my first year on UA-cam...I have lots of new videos planned... just have to find the time to get them done! But having a ton of fun!
Straight to the point, ZERO childish talk like what I have to endure when learning from many other DaVinci Resolve younger UA-camrs. Thank you Sir! Regards from North Africa to you in North America.
thanks so much i am going to do all my own animation for my youtube and my mixer stream dont worry i will for sure give u credit u are amazing for showing me what i can do on a free program
Super cool vids William.... QQ? I'm trying to insert an animation of dots or dashes into a small clip of film footage. IE dots going around a door mat on the floor or a sign on the wall. Do you have any tutorials on this please! Thanks Chris
Thanks for your comments. I dont know how to do dots/dashes right now, but will investigate when i get a chance. If I find something interesting, I may make a video about it.
Did you have trouble downloading? you just just need to click the link to go tot he download page, then click download (it is on google drive). That will get your browser to download the .settings file. You can then go to your browser downloads to find the file. Once you have the file you should be able to drag it into a fusion composition. Let me know if you are having issues and I will see if I can help you out.
Thanks a lot, I have a quick question. Do you have to make this manually for every overlay that you put on top? Or is there a way that you can have like a permanent window on your main video through which you can display several images and small clips?
If you have multiple overlay images and want them to all be in the same frame... there are probably a lot of ways to do that. You can try putting all the overlays together in the timeline, select the overlay clips, right click and choose new compound clip. That will turn it into one clip that you can apply the effect to.
@@WilliamJusticeMedia awesome, will try that today, I wanted yo have some sort of "on screen window" to display pictures and videos on different scales and sizes. What I managed to do is to make a long video track with a single image, and applied the fusion changes to create the main frame and overlay, then, whenever I want to change the input for the "window" I clip the fusion track, and add the new input in a background node, if I need to zoom and rescale, then I put a transform node after that, connected to the published size and center of the main rectangle, so the window and frame always remain the same. it works like a charm, but I'll also try your recommendation, I've used Resolve for only a couple of hours, and this video gave me an overall view of how and why things work, thank you for the great work and effort!
I've watched this video for about an hour and a half, taking my time to mess with the settings of each thing. Brilliant work! Have you used Blackmagic's training books? I was thinking of getting the 'Getting started with Fusion', but I figured asking you would be a better way to find a good learning resource, if you used one yourself when you started.
Thanks for watching. I have not used the Blackmagic training. Just learned from trying things out and watching UA-cam videos. There are a huge number of features in the app. Seems like always more to learn.
great job William! I have the same problem as LEDgendaryDIY. On rectangle 1, the rectangle fit the image size when width and height are at 0.5 and not 1 another question: when we zoom the image , how can we mask the image when it goes out of the border?
Hi Bernard. Are you still having trouble with this. Sometimes the dimensions can get a bit off. if you can give me more details, I can try to see what might be causing your issue.
@@WilliamJusticeMedia Hi William, yes I still not have the solution. The goal is to have an image in backgroud and another image in foreground with a border. I can do that. But in some cases, i want to have to zoom the image in foreground but in a window keeping the same size. As an example, in your video, it's to zoom ONLY your face in the border without going out of the border Actually, when I do this, if the zoom is bigger than the border, the image goes out of the window. I try different solutions in fusion, without succes. ( sorry for my poor english, I hope you will understand) Bernard
@@bernardr.913 Hi Bernard. I'm not sure if this can help you. I was having some problems with the border and the portion of the image I was trying to use inside the border (something like a crop) and here is what I did. Sorry my English. ua-cam.com/video/Erg9ochXFqQ/v-deo.html
@Bruno Vilela thanks for your suggestion, but it's not my question. What I want to make : zoom an image or video in or out in a fixed frame, like the demo ua-cam.com/video/Tr-Q0lZ7YIo/v-deo.html
@@bernardr.913 So Bernard. I think that with just one (two or three) nodes in my fusion composition of my previous video you can achieve what you want. Check this new one to see if this can help you. Notice there is a "transform" node as my last node before the MediaOut1 node. That node is useless in this fusion composition unles you need to resize all the frame/image at some point inside fusion. So, indeed you don't need it there. I just let it there without any utility. for this short video purpose. :) ua-cam.com/video/julcfesJpic/v-deo.html
U r amazing.... How u teach is the real key....simple stuff in details... Sir one request, could please make a glass breaking effects tutorial? I mean, video gets broken in glass effect... Im AE there is already a preset (shatter) but not in DR
Broken Glass.. that sound interesting. Not sure if I can do anything with that but will add it to my list. If I get time and come up with anything good I will make a video about it.
Can you make a video on using the follower modifier on 3D text? I’m trying to duplicate 3D text node on top of another one and use the duplicate as a beveled outline that’s a different color and texture to the foreground copy of the text. However when I use the follower modifier to animate the individual characters, they don’t line up properly. If that makes any sense.
Hi, Thanks for the suggestion. I will add this to my list of ideas for new videos and if I come up with something interesting I may make a video about it. I dont have much experience with 3D text or the follower modifier so it might be interesting to investigate!
You are always awesome man ! can you post tutorials of davinci resolve about text for a explanation video with other language like Tamil etc... Please help Man
Are you referring to the video description text? or subtitles/CC translation where you see the text on top of the video as I am talking?when watching videos you should be able to click the gear icon and then subtitles.. Think there is an option to translate to another language. I have not done much with other languages. If you can let me know what you are looking for, I can investigate and see if I can set it up.
Not sure exactly which effect you are referring to, but lots of the effects in this video could be applied to text. Just depends on what you are wanting to do. It may need to be setup a bit differently, but could achieve a similar look.
Hello, I saw your video am very interested in learning the software an to purchase but am becoming extremely frustrated in finding tutorials that explain step by step for ABSOLUTELY BEGINNER TYPES SUCH AS MYSELF! NEED YOUR HELP! Most assuming a person knows something about the software which obviously I don't this makes me extremely depressed cause I want to learn (basically I need to held by the hand for each step) I have no one to help me. Are there any simple to explain tutorials an not outrageous priced books illustration for step by step I can obtain? I know you are busy but am on a budget so I can't just take expensive courses or books that barely tell me the details in a simple manner. I just downloaded the free version to start to practice but looks complicated... Again getting depressed if I should consider purchasing if its too complicated to learn. I await your reply.
Wow! This was super helpful and near perfect! Next I just need to figure out if there's a way to relocate my clip on the screen and have the mask move with it T-T But I am so thankful for finding this video, thank you ^-^ Suddenly wondering how you got 2 masks on the same screen with 2 different videos :o that's exactly what I need ahhh
@@WilliamJusticeMedia Thank you! I had some issues, but it turned out Davinci 15 was just buggy! I updated to 16 and I was able to get 2 videos with their own masks on the same timeline just fine. Your videos are great.. I need a rectangular border on a picture but a little different to what you taught .. I want the border to close in one direction only .. the rectangle you showed is closing in from both directions from the starting point .. Can you please help me with that
Not sure exactly the look you are going for but try going into fusion, add a background and put a rectangle mask on the background. Un check solid for the background and increase the border width. You can then adjust the lengh/position property and keyfframe that
@@WilliamJusticeMedia I tried but couldn't succeed.. I meant a border exactly like you showed in 9:38 .. the white border and reverse border you showed both are starting from one point and the length grows on two directions until closing. But i want that border to go in one direction only and close all the way round the picture and end at that starting point. I hope you understand what I meant to ask (sorry if I am not clarifying my problem properly, English is not my first language so it's hard for me to explain exactly.. i tried my best though)

very good Davinci fusion tutorial .simply and clear , actually the video should get more reader.
Thanks a lot! Glad you liked the video!
Practical applications, love it!
Glad you like it! Thanks for watching!
Thanks! It helped me a lot
Nice video man. I got one question tho. Can i do this on png images with a transparent background (for example renders of videogame characters or logos)?
You can try this with png images, but with the rectangle framing it would probably work best with non transparent images.
Can we use the edge detect node in any way to create sort of a mask. Essentially I am trying to have a fun background at the bottom and would like the background to show up only where the edge detect detects an edge. But can't seem to get it to work any help would be appreciated , thanks.

Always on spot, i always watch your channel
Thanks for your comments! Working on my next video right now!
Another killer tutorial. Awesome!
Hi DrHans... As always!!! Appreciate your comments/support. Thanks!
Great video, lots of good tips on fusion techniques throughout. Cheers!
Thanks... for the matteControl.. it was just a convenient way to add the mask.
I guess something is wrong with my Davinci Resolve 16.1.2
EDIT: I updated to 16.2.2, and the "Borderl Style" is available in the inspector for the Rectangle node
Ok sounds good... So upgrading fixed the issue for you?
@@WilliamJusticeMedia Yes 👌
But now I don't know if it was an personal issue with my install or if it's was something new in 16.2.2. *Anyway, I can follow your great tutorial now 😁*
The best William ... Thanks a lot

Can't believe this tips are so hard to find. Imma sub real quick
Hi... thanks so much.. appreciate your support!
William Justice thank you for this swift and detailed response Sir, I have just tried what you’ve written and it worked perfectly.
Thank you so much man, this will really help me!
Awesome. Glad you liked this one!
Regards from North Africa to you in North America.
thanks. glad you enjoyed the video. hope things are good in North Africa!
Good video I plan on using your stuff more and more thanks man.
Awesome, Thank you!
thanks so much i am going to do all my own animation for my youtube and my mixer stream dont worry i will for sure give u credit u are amazing for showing me what i can do on a free program
Thanks for the comments. Good luck creating an animation. Once you understand the basics you an do so many different things!
Nice Video, Very well explained. Subbed.
Thanks for the sub!
@@WilliamJusticeMedia Hey no worries. I'll try are sort it some other way.... This is what I was after. gk.qumucloud.com/view/SO2kUcuYbFX#/
Can you make a video on how to exactly configure the downloaded settings ??
This is dope! Thanks a lot for these awesome tutorials! 🔥
Thanks.. Glad you like my videos!
Great and simple!
Glad you like it!
great job William!
I have the same problem as LEDgendaryDIY.
On rectangle 1, the rectangle fit the image size when width and height are at 0.5 and not 1
another question: when we zoom the image , how can we mask the image when it goes out of the border?
As an example, in your video, it's to zoom ONLY your face in the border without going out of the border
Actually, when I do this, if the zoom is bigger than the border, the image goes out of the window.
I try different solutions in fusion, without succes.
( sorry for my poor english, I hope you will understand)
Bernard
@@bernardr.913 Hi Bernard. I'm not sure if this can help you. I was having some problems with the border and the portion of the image I was trying to use inside the border (something like a crop) and here is what I did.
Sorry my English.
ua-cam.com/video/Erg9ochXFqQ/v-deo.html
@Bruno Vilela thanks for your suggestion, but it's not my question. What I want to make : zoom an image or video in or out in a fixed frame, like the demo
ua-cam.com/video/Tr-Q0lZ7YIo/v-deo.html
@@bernardr.913 So Bernard. I think that with just one (two or three) nodes in my fusion composition of my previous video you can achieve what you want. Check this new one to see if this can help you.
Notice there is a "transform" node as my last node before the MediaOut1 node. That node is useless in this fusion composition unles you need to resize all the frame/image at some point inside fusion. So, indeed you don't need it there. I just let it there without any utility. for this short video purpose. :)

Great tut, definitly 👍
Appreciate it!
Great video ! But why does my image or Video get very blurry when I add contrast ? With the lightning affects or with the seethe rate
Hi, Hmm not sure why you would have a blurry image issue. Did you figure it out?
Can you make a video on using the follower modifier on 3D text? I’m trying to duplicate 3D text node on top of another one and use the duplicate as a beveled outline that’s a different color and texture to the foreground copy of the text. However when I use the follower modifier to animate the individual characters, they don’t line up properly. If that makes any sense.
Hi, Thanks for the suggestion. I will add this to my list of ideas for new videos and if I come up with something interesting I may make a video about it. I dont have much experience with 3D text or the follower modifier so it might be interesting to investigate!
It is truly amazing and helpful, thanks!
Hi Darius, thanks... appreciate your feedback!
If you can let me know what you are looking for, I can investigate and see if I can set it up.
ermahgerd where have you been all my life?!
Is there any way to do this same effect on text?
Also thank you, this is an extremely helpful tutorial
Another great tutorial!
Thanks!
Wow! This was super helpful and near perfect! Next I just need to figure out if there's a way to relocate my clip on the screen and have the mask move with it T-T But I am so thankful for finding this video, thank you ^-^
Suddenly wondering how you got 2 masks on the same screen with 2 different videos :o that's exactly what I need ahhh
Glad you liked the video. Hope you got things figured out. Once you play around a bit with masking it gets easier to make it do what you want!
@@WilliamJusticeMedia Thank you! I had some issues, but it turned out Davinci 15 was just buggy! I updated to 16 and I was able to get 2 videos with their own masks on the same timeline just fine. For some reason on 15, the 2nd video would "grab" all the videos underneath it when I tried to move it x-x
Thank You so Much For sharing this Skills with us ive been learning a lot form. You

Thank you! 😊 I always try to mix tings up and do something different if I can.
@@WilliamJusticeMedia that's great, man! Your videos are always fun and creative and playful. Your content definitely has a unique style and stands out. Keep it up!
I hope you understand what I meant to ask (sorry if I am not clarifying my problem properly, English is not my first language so it's hard for me to explain exactly.. i tried my best though)
for some reason when I return to edit my video the border is resized differently and my image overlayed on the border is glitched out :(
