Having a "build" makes no sense for a Cleric. Is this your build for a Cleric of the Goddess of Love, as well as the Goddess of the Sea, as well as the God of Knowledge, as well as the God of War? Etc etc etc...
I played a Dwarf life domain cleric in my first 5e campaign and I am shocked with what a tank he was. I had no interest in playing a Cleric but it fit the party, and being able to help has been really great.
Historically clerics have been very tanky characters. Even back into the 80s (I glanced at the books from the 70s but don't remember). In both 3.5 and 4E clerics could basically go toe to toe with a fighter in terms of weapon and shield tanking. The cleric would need to augment themselves a bit with spells, but it would work out (for a while). The 2014 rules set up the life domain to be extremely tanky! It's reinforced in several places. * you get access to heavy armor which was extremely rare for clerics * at level 6 when they heal others they heal themselves for free. This is really only useful if they're on the front lines taking damage to make use of the healing. * at level 8 every domain got either a bonus to cantrip damage or melee damage. Life domain got a bonus to melee damage reinforcing the idea that they're in the thick of things with a weapon. The 2024 rules have changed things a bit. * any domain can have the protector divine order and get access to martial weapons and heavy armor. This can make any domain more or less tanky than before. * any domain can either get a boost to melee OR a boost to spellcasting. Each cleric just picks one. * the life cleric DOES still heal themselves when they heal others at level 6. You would naturally get less out of this if you're not damaged when you're healing others. So, it would still be in your best interests to take hits and attacks to get this free healing.

My group recently decided we’re going to run Lost Mines of Phandelver with 5e24 characters. 2 of the players haven’t kept up with the news so I’ll have link them to this channel soon.
I just did Lost Mines as a brand new group (myself included). I was a bit of an outsider and so when they said they needed a “healer” it decided to be a team player. Y’all. My dwarven life domain cleric with high AC and HP was so useful during many “oops” mistakes we’d make and two or three players would go down. That channel divinity is no joke at the first few levels.
I love how divine order can change the way you can play the same subclass, a war domain cleric can be the divine warrior who fight evil with heavy arnor and strong weapon or be the priest who brings divine power to others to fight for/ with him while standing in second line to assist others... Of course a melee cleric can assist anyways, but you can focus better on the way you want to play the class
One of my favorite 2014 characters was a knowledge cleric. What I did was dump Charisma and made Intelligence my secondary ability. He was a versatile human with the sage background and the Prodigy feat, so he ended being the party researcher with expertise in History, Religion, and Investigation. He also ended up being a polyglot because I later took the Linguist feat. He was definitely more of a support character, but still very useful in combat situations. It was one of those niche builds where I wanted a good Intelligence where most of the times clerics would dump it.
A Silver Dragonborn War Cleric of Bahamut with Magic Initiate for Shield and your two favorite cantrips (maybe True Strike and Mage Hand). Warrior priest with the classic Morningstar and Shield combo. Damn that would be fun
20:54 I'm playing a tiefling cleric with the Cthonic lineage. I had a burst of inspiration from the idea of a yugoloth tiefling, and I came up with the backstory that his mom died while he was still a bun in the oven, and she made a deal with a Merrenoloth trying to escort her across the River Styx to allow her back into the world of the living so she could give birth. And then she tricked him and got to raise my character for several years before she was taken to the afterlife years after she had first died. And he worships the trickery god of my DM's homebrew world because he feels trickery is how he was given life so he has this strangely optimistic attitude about everything and is actually particularly religious, which is fun to play for me.
I already wanted to play a tiefling light cleric, and now I can do it with heavy armor. Would definitely descend into Avernus like this, though of course I’d take elemental adept!
Fantastic presentation gentlemen! As a novice player, I REALY appreciate this in depth look into the class(es). It comes at a time where I was barely getting a grasp of 5e and was looking to explore new classes and build interesting, new and fun characters. Guidance actually changed: Its no longer a d4 to whatever the next skill check is, but instead a buff on all roles using a specific skill of your choice for the next minute. Dont remember if its a d4 or advantage. Either way, still a great cantrip!
*Guidance* is now a d4 to every check using the chosen skill (e.g. Persuasion) for 1 minute, so it's better for repeated checks, but you need to anticipate which skill will be called for. *Enhance Ability* is still advantage on every check using the chosen ability (e.g. Charisma) for 1 hour, so it's more broad. Both are *Concentration,* but two casters can combine them to really buff up one PC.
@@SortKaffe yeah enhance ability became better with the change to guidance. People didn't really cast it before because they could just guidance every time but now it's a question of did you choose the right skill vs all skills using this ability. I'm kinda just rambling lol
27:04 you're talking about 2014 guidance. 2024 guidance adds a d4 for a minute to all skill checks that the target makes with one specific skill for a minute.
The new True Strike really does make a compelling case for a cleric that wants to be able to smack a fool as well as spellcast. There's some very tempting options here. I don't know when/if I'll ever get to play with the 2024 rules, but these seem pretty good. RIP Spiritual Weapon, though.
As a RL Cleric myself, I really enjoyed this video. I typically love playing a Barbarian , but you guys convinced me to play a War Cleric. Always love your videos!
I love the cleric class. I'm a Light Domain Cleric with an archeologist background who prays to Lathander, we're on a homebrew space odyssey adventure! Rocking medium armor and no weapon, only a shield, total frontliner with a bit of a cowboy look. Darrow Caine is a freekin superhero 🤘
I know that the Dungeon dudes don't find healing spells particularly useful, but I think it would be good to point out that cure wound and healing word got dramatically boosted in the 2024 edition as it now get 2dX + mod and a bonus 2dX per lvl of healing compared to the 2015 version that are 1dX and 1dX per lvl.
If you're a weapon-using Cleric, you might consider Shadow Touched for _Wrathful Smite._ You'll want to concentrate on _Spirit Guardians_ most of the time, so that rules out the new _Spiritual Weapon._ _Wrathful Smite_ might not seem like much, but Frightening enemies in your _Spirit Guardians_ is pretty great, especially if you corner them so they can't get closer to you and are just stuck in the _Spirit Guardians._ And the new _Wrathful Smite_ doesn't require concentration.
Start with 1 level in *Fighter* for *Weapon Mastery* with Warhammer to *Push* them away while making them *Frightened,* so they can't get close enough to hit you. Also *Con save proficiency* etc. *Wrathful Smite* was already underrated, but without Concentration, it's undoubtedly great!
@@SortKaffe Crusher or Weapon Master can also help. If you go Fighter first, you can make your Masteries all about different Bludgeoning weapons and have the extra Push from Crusher and +1 Con to boot. If you know you're going straight Cleric for that stellar captstone, Weapon Master will still let you get Mastery on a Warhammer. Just make sure you get _True Strike_ via High Elf or Magic Initiate (Wizard).
~30:10 I had no idea they essentially rolled Catnap's benefits into Prayer of Healing, wasn't a spell it occurred to me to check if they'd changed. That's a pretty massive buff, especially since they buffed a lot of classes to regain stuff on a Short Rest. Plus since they're different spells could double dip if you have one of the classes that can pull Catnap and you're using 5e content that hasn't been reprinted in 5.5 yet since both just say you can't benefit from *this* spell again until a Long Rest. Kind of wild that it's better Catnap a whole spell level earlier impacting two more creatures and providing healing on its own in addition to the Short Rest, plus doesn't make the recipients Unconscious so they can do stuff or maintain Concentration. I guess there's the slight downside that Verbal components for 10 minutes will make you slightly more likely to be found than Catnap's single silent Action then sleeping if you're in a hidden place?
There are situations where using Divine Intervention for a mid combat Prayer of Healing could be clutch. Imagine a party with a fighter, monk, and warlock getting a SR mid battle in a boss fight.
@@garion046 Especially since 5.5 Monks can actually recover Focus from a shortened Short Rest when following the RAW. 5e ones had to meditate for at least 30 minutes as part of the Rest to recover Ki, which strict RAW prevented features such as Catnap from working for them, though a lot of people didn't realize the restriction was there/treated it like flavor rather than mechanics
... it hurts my lightning kobold soul to hear that there was no update for the tempest cleric. 😢 On the other hand... the new base class and the ability to be able to still potentially use the old subclasses does bring me massive joy. 😂
I love how everyone in the comments has described their amazing and unique builds, whilst I'm sat here excited to play a basic Human Life Cleric in robes to get that fantasy Priest / White Mage feeling.
recently, I have been told that Divine Intervension doesn't work that way. In Rules Glossary it states: "If you cast a spell that has a casting time of 1 minute or longer, you must take the Magic action on each turn of that casting, and you must maintain Concentration while you do so.". So, when you use the Divine Intervention to use the Magic Action to cast a spell with a casting time of 1 minute or longer, you have to cast that spell using that specific casting time.
Normally yes, but specific rules override general ones. Since Divine Intervention says "any casting time other than a reaction", this overrides that standard rule
I'm not sure what is RAI, but the exact wording of *Divine Intervention* is: _“As a Magic action, choose any Cleric spell of level 5 or lower that doesn’t require a Reaction to cast. As part of the same action, you cast that spell without expending a spell slot or needing Material components.“_
Cleric is my favorite spell caster. I’ve only played a trickery domain in a full campaign (also she lost her cleric levels once she stopped worshipping Loki so I didn’t fully play it) but it is my go to for one-shots! ❤
Still think its weird that the acolyte background is very thematic for a cleric but not very good of a background choice given the ability score choices. It's honestly pretty frustrating and wouldn't mind if they changed it in an errata
Getting fixed ability scores bonuses tied to backgrounds when there was such an effort made to make them a free choice seems like an odd direction to go.
My absolute most favorite Cleric character I've ever made was a life domain, Tabaxi nun of Lathander. I think the new 2024 rules set will help a lot with my overall concept of this character due to the changes to the "Healer" architype for clerics. Since she was not meant to have a great strength score (8), she couldn't make use of heavy armor anyway.
9:08 for this situation would it be overcharging to let the cleric use a channel divinity charge to swap a prepared spell for the one needed on the spot?
I’ve played, not one, but two Life Clerics now. With all the cure wounds spells healing double, I’m so excited to play something OTHER than Life Cleric for once! All the other Domains are SO much better than Life now!
Or a particular aspect or area of interest for the cleric's particular god. Because, by both lore and RAW, the blessings are already coming from the specific deity before the subclass is chosen, it's just the specific talents of a particular emphasis that show up with the subclass.
In the game I'm in I started off as a Necromancer Wizard and they showed respect to the dead and eventually heard the voice of their god (custom for my DM's setting) and I ended up taking levels of Grave Cleric and it's been great
One thing you didn’t mention is that True Strike and Blessed Strikes also work at range, so you can be a heavy crossbow wielding cleric knocking people around the battlefield at range while still doing scaling damage.
I'm playing a rogue who's whole life he's been very focused on the world in front of him and he's just recently found religion in that he's been picked up by the trickster god anansi and he's learning what it means to be a cleric in real time. But one thing that's definitely changed for him is that he refers to people's lives as "the stories they write with their actions" (anansi is a story god as much as a trickster) and he extends similar respect to spiders that he does to people now.
A blaster cleric should definitely consider picking up mage slayer, since not only is getting 1 legendary resistance very useful, giving disadvantage to caster concentration saves is great. I think light works great for this.
I like the choices of full caster or battle priest then a subclass. So you could forgo wisdom and focus on str and con and just use buff, healing or utility spells if you want to be a frontliner. A gnomish trickery cleric is my choice. They have a god about trickery too in Garl Glittergold
Cleric has too many features that *rely on Wisdom,* so it would be silly not max it out (Divine Spark, Turn Undead, Sear Undead, and Blessed Strikes). Just cast *True Strike* to use Wis for your attacks. Pick it up via the *Sage background* as recommended by the dudes. Gnome *Trickery Cleric* of Garl Glittergold sound so fun! You can even cast True Strike or Spirit Guardians from your *duplicate,* so you can stay pretty safe.

True strike is a godsend for warrior Cleric with 2024, too bad it isn't part of the spell list but with the ease to get the Magic initiate feat, getting both True strike and Blade ward, while getting Shield or Absorb element is really practical.
I'm not going to lie, even when I'm not playing a Cleric I always like finding a way to take Sacred Flame. The Strixhaven backgrounds were great for it, though I wonder how the newer pre-2024 backgrounds will interact with the 2024 rules.
So are there really people out there calling it 5E 2024 or 5E24 instead of 5.5E? Because, despite all of WotC's attempts at branding it otherwise, that's exactly what it is. Or am I missing something?

Think I'll make a cleric who's basically a soldier who wishes really really hard for useful things, so the gods look over and go, "eh, sure" and grant boons or curses. Not especially devout about anything, just a relatively decent person who has things work out well for them and their friends because they're touched by a divinity they don't even recognize.
First, I love these videos and they make me excited to play different classes in the new version. I thought I saw that spiritual weapon is now concentration so you can't have that and spirit guardians up at the same time. Is that correct or was it merely a nightmare I had?

Now that I’m looking at the book for the cleric, I’m unsure if the decision to be a blaster or melee cleric matters much. Since… well… Thaumaturge is better in every aspect. You buff your ability checks with wisdom and get an extra cantrip. You can just make up the armor and weapon proficiency with a subclass that grants it such as war domain, twilight domain, or order domain cleric. Very easy to be a master of both casting and combat. The most the other feature grants is heavy armor to non heavy armor subclasses. Also I found this out. Yes, potent spell casting adds a damage modifier to your “cleric” cantrips. However. If you go arcana domain, wizard cantrips count as cleric cantrips. Enter the new true strike cantrip. This thing now lets you attack with your weapon with spell casting modifier, adds additional 1d6 damage with level ups, and gives additional damage with your spellcasting modifier. Combine this with potent spell casting and no matter the weapon you can potentially do a maximum of 1d6+10 damage despite the weapon used.
Instantly casting Hallow as a Cleric is essentially the same thing as a Domain Expansion from JJK. It’s also absolutely broken so sadly most DM probably wouldn’t allow it.
Ok I have a question having just bought the players handbook for 2024. What ARE the rules for using an older cleric subclass? Do they get their domain at first level per the old rules or do they use the new rules until their subclass at level 3 and then retroactively get their subclass features that would have activated at first and second levels?
It's a little buried, but it's a casual mention at the end of each class's Subclass feature, "For the rest of your career, you gain each of your subclass's features that are of your $Class level or lower." So you gain the subclass feature at 3, then it checks against your level and you get any features from level 1 or 2 for classes that used to get their things at those levels.

In looking at D&DBEYOND... they made the 2024 options almost perfect for me. My 4 favorite characters to play are 1) Wizard, 2) Rogue, 3) Cleric, and 4) Barbarian (not fighter). So, unless something changes, D&DB 2014 will be the same, and 2024 options will be free for Cleric, Fighter, Rogue, and Wizard, but otherwise, mostly purchases?!
The 5.5 version of the classic four man group of "Fighting-man, Magic-User, Cleric, and Thief" from super early DnD (technically started as Fighting-man, Magic-User, and Cleric as the super old school one with Thief added in the first supplement) with one subclass each was made available for everyone for early access, the other 8 PHB classes with one subclass each will be added to the free to everyone rules when the 5.5 PHB is officially "out" in general stores that aren't part of the early release for participating game stores on the 17th same as the 5e one is now.
I am actually working on a pacifist Life Domain cleric with the following prompt Have you ever regretted the blood you shed? Have you every simply cast aside your sword in disgust of yourself or a deed so vile? I chose to heal now to balance the scales of blood that weigh my soul.
It looks like each god will support every single domain now. Or, am I missing this in the player's handbook and dungeon master guide? So, if you want to worship Milil the god of song, and poetry ... and be the war domain, or death domain (when it comes out) or whatever ... that's just fine and dandy.
The new Divine Intervention is going to end campaigns AND friendships when players start taking short rests in the middle of combat with Prayer of Healing.
The *Sleep* spell now requires you to fail *2 Wisdom saving throws* to take effect. Cleric and Druid are the two classes that are the most unlikely to fail 2 Wis saves in a row, so save your elves for the other classes if you're afraid of enemy mages casting Sleep.
Actually, you don't need miracles in dnd to believe in gods. One of the assumptions for every multiverse written in DMG 2014 is that gods are factual. They exist and they cannot be denied.

I know that the Dungeon dudes don't find healing spells particularly useful, but I think it would be good to point out that cure wound and healing word got dramatically boosted in the 2024 edition as it now get 2dX + mod and a bonus 2dX per lvl of healing compared to the 2015 version that are 1dX and 1dX per lvl.
If you're a weapon-using Cleric, you might consider Shadow Touched for _Wrathful Smite._ You'll want to concentrate on _Spirit Guardians_ most of the time, so that rules out the new _Spiritual Weapon._ _Wrathful Smite_ might not seem like much, but Frightening enemies in your _Spirit Guardians_ is pretty great, especially if you corner them so they can't get closer to you and are just stuck in the _Spirit Guardians._ And the new _Wrathful Smite_ doesn't require concentration.
Start with 1 level in *Fighter* for *Weapon Mastery* with Warhammer to *Push* them away while making them *Frightened,* so they can't get close enough to hit you. Also *Con save proficiency* etc.
*Wrathful Smite* was already underrated, but without Concentration, it's undoubtedly great!
@@SortKaffe Crusher or Weapon Master can also help. If you go Fighter first, you can make your Masteries all about different Bludgeoning weapons and have the extra Push from Crusher and +1 Con to boot. If you know you're going straight Cleric for that stellar captstone, Weapon Master will still let you get Mastery on a Warhammer. Just make sure you get _True Strike_ via High Elf or Magic Initiate (Wizard).

~30:10 I had no idea they essentially rolled Catnap's benefits into Prayer of Healing, wasn't a spell it occurred to me to check if they'd changed. That's a pretty massive buff, especially since they buffed a lot of classes to regain stuff on a Short Rest. Plus since they're different spells could double dip if you have one of the classes that can pull Catnap and you're using 5e content that hasn't been reprinted in 5.5 yet since both just say you can't benefit from *this* spell again until a Long Rest. Kind of wild that it's better Catnap a whole spell level earlier impacting two more creatures and providing healing on its own in addition to the Short Rest, plus doesn't make the recipients Unconscious so they can do stuff or maintain Concentration. I guess there's the slight downside that Verbal components for 10 minutes will make you slightly more likely to be found than Catnap's single silent Action then sleeping if you're in a hidden place?
I wonder if there's a god of silence....which might hypothetically allow all verbal components to be done in sign language!
There are situations where using Divine Intervention for a mid combat Prayer of Healing could be clutch. Imagine a party with a fighter, monk, and warlock getting a SR mid battle in a boss fight.
@@garion046 Especially since 5.5 Monks can actually recover Focus from a shortened Short Rest when following the RAW. 5e ones had to meditate for at least 30 minutes as part of the Rest to recover Ki, which strict RAW prevented features such as Catnap from working for them, though a lot of people didn't realize the restriction was there/treated it like flavor rather than mechanics

recently, I have been told that Divine Intervension doesn't work that way. In Rules Glossary it states: "If you cast a spell that has a casting time of 1 minute or longer, you must take the Magic action on each turn of that casting, and you must maintain Concentration while you do so.". So, when you use the Divine Intervention to use the Magic Action to cast a spell with a casting time of 1 minute or longer, you have to cast that spell using that specific casting time.
Normally yes, but specific rules override general ones. Since Divine Intervention says "any casting time other than a reaction", this overrides that standard rule
I'm not sure what is RAI, but the exact wording of *Divine Intervention* is:
_“As a Magic action, choose any Cleric spell of level 5 or lower that doesn’t require a Reaction to cast. As part of the same action, you cast that spell without expending a spell slot or needing Material components.“_

Cleric is my favorite spell caster. I’ve only played a trickery domain in a full campaign (also she lost her cleric levels once she stopped worshipping Loki so I didn’t fully play it) but it is my go to for one-shots! ❤
Still think its weird that the acolyte background is very thematic for a cleric but not very good of a background choice given the ability score choices. It's honestly pretty frustrating and wouldn't mind if they changed it in an errata
Getting fixed ability scores bonuses tied to backgrounds when there was such an effort made to make them a free choice seems like an odd direction to go.
I think Sage is better for ability scores because you get +Con
My absolute most favorite Cleric character I've ever made was a life domain, Tabaxi nun of Lathander. I think the new 2024 rules set will help a lot with my overall concept of this character due to the changes to the "Healer" architype for clerics. Since she was not meant to have a great strength score (8), she couldn't make use of heavy armor anyway.

I’ve played, not one, but two Life Clerics now. With all the cure wounds spells healing double, I’m so excited to play something OTHER than Life Cleric for once! All the other Domains are SO much better than Life now!

Or a particular aspect or area of interest for the cleric's particular god. Because, by both lore and RAW, the blessings are already coming from the specific deity before the subclass is chosen, it's just the specific talents of a particular emphasis that show up with the subclass.
In the game I'm in I started off as a Necromancer Wizard and they showed respect to the dead and eventually heard the voice of their god (custom for my DM's setting) and I ended up taking levels of Grave Cleric and it's been great

There is an awesome idea in The Fallbacks d&d novel by Jaleigh Johnson for a cleric that deals with a pantheon. Also a great source for sidequests.
One thing you didn’t mention is that True Strike and Blessed Strikes also work at range, so you can be a heavy crossbow wielding cleric knocking people around the battlefield at range while still doing scaling damage.
And the best part? True Strike has only somatic and material components so Silence is a deafening killer combo.
I'm playing a rogue who's whole life he's been very focused on the world in front of him and he's just recently found religion in that he's been picked up by the trickster god anansi and he's learning what it means to be a cleric in real time. But one thing that's definitely changed for him is that he refers to people's lives as "the stories they write with their actions" (anansi is a story god as much as a trickster) and he extends similar respect to spiders that he does to people now.

A blaster cleric should definitely consider picking up mage slayer, since not only is getting 1 legendary resistance very useful, giving disadvantage to caster concentration saves is great. I think light works great for this.

I like the choices of full caster or battle priest then a subclass. So you could forgo wisdom and focus on str and con and just use buff, healing or utility spells if you want to be a frontliner.
A gnomish trickery cleric is my choice. They have a god about trickery too in Garl Glittergold
Cleric has too many features that *rely on Wisdom,* so it would be silly not max it out (Divine Spark, Turn Undead, Sear Undead, and Blessed Strikes).
Just cast *True Strike* to use Wis for your attacks. Pick it up via the *Sage background* as recommended by the dudes.
Gnome *Trickery Cleric* of Garl Glittergold sound so fun!
You can even cast True Strike or Spirit Guardians from your *duplicate,* so you can stay pretty safe.

True strike is a godsend for warrior Cleric with 2024, too bad it isn't part of the spell list but with the ease to get the Magic initiate feat, getting both True strike and Blade ward, while getting Shield or Absorb element is really practical.
I like the death cleric. Double toll the dead with potent cantrip is so strong

I'm not going to lie, even when I'm not playing a Cleric I always like finding a way to take Sacred Flame. The Strixhaven backgrounds were great for it, though I wonder how the newer pre-2024 backgrounds will interact with the 2024 rules.

Think I'll make a cleric who's basically a soldier who wishes really really hard for useful things, so the gods look over and go, "eh, sure" and grant boons or curses. Not especially devout about anything, just a relatively decent person who has things work out well for them and their friends because they're touched by a divinity they don't even recognize.
I tend not to prepare Raise Dead, Revivify can usually do the job and as for needing Raise Dead "I need a Nap First"
One thing to be aware of with Divine Intervention is Hallow. It's potentially game breaking so discuss with your table.

What do you think of Spiriit Guardian Build with a light Cleric and Cloud Goliath? Thematically problematic?
Now that I’m looking at the book for the cleric, I’m unsure if the decision to be a blaster or melee cleric matters much. Since… well… Thaumaturge is better in every aspect. You buff your ability checks with wisdom and get an extra cantrip. You can just make up the armor and weapon proficiency with a subclass that grants it such as war domain, twilight domain, or order domain cleric. Very easy to be a master of both casting and combat.
The most the other feature grants is heavy armor to non heavy armor subclasses.
Also I found this out. Yes, potent spell casting adds a damage modifier to your “cleric” cantrips. However. If you go arcana domain, wizard cantrips count as cleric cantrips.
Enter the new true strike cantrip.
This thing now lets you attack with your weapon with spell casting modifier, adds additional 1d6 damage with level ups, and gives additional damage with your spellcasting modifier.
Combine this with potent spell casting and no matter the weapon you can potentially do a maximum of 1d6+10 damage despite the weapon used.
Instantly casting Hallow as a Cleric is essentially the same thing as a Domain Expansion from JJK.
It’s also absolutely broken so sadly most DM probably wouldn’t allow it.
Personally I still love the Van Helsing type Cleric. Crossbow wielding monster slayer; especially now that dual wielding hand crossbows is a thing.

Ok I have a question having just bought the players handbook for 2024. What ARE the rules for using an older cleric subclass? Do they get their domain at first level per the old rules or do they use the new rules until their subclass at level 3 and then retroactively get their subclass features that would have activated at first and second levels?
It's a little buried, but it's a casual mention at the end of each class's Subclass feature, "For the rest of your career, you gain each of your subclass's features that are of your $Class level or lower." So you gain the subclass feature at 3, then it checks against your level and you get any features from level 1 or 2 for classes that used to get their things at those levels.

I want to play a life domain warrior priest. I get to bring the pain and my domain spells cover any healing I need
In looking at D&DBEYOND... they made the 2024 options almost perfect for me. My 4 favorite characters to play are 1) Wizard, 2) Rogue, 3) Cleric, and 4) Barbarian (not fighter). So, unless something changes, D&DB 2014 will be the same, and 2024 options will be free for Cleric, Fighter, Rogue, and Wizard, but otherwise, mostly purchases?!
The 5.5 version of the classic four man group of "Fighting-man, Magic-User, Cleric, and Thief" from super early DnD (technically started as Fighting-man, Magic-User, and Cleric as the super old school one with Thief added in the first supplement) with one subclass each was made available for everyone for early access, the other 8 PHB classes with one subclass each will be added to the free to everyone rules when the 5.5 PHB is officially "out" in general stores that aren't part of the early release for participating game stores on the 17th same as the 5e one is now.

It looks like each god will support every single domain now. Or, am I missing this in the player's handbook and dungeon master guide?
So, if you want to worship Milil the god of song, and poetry ... and be the war domain, or death domain (when it comes out) or whatever ... that's just fine and dandy.

Sleep is just such a debilitating effect at low levels I can’t help but go with an Elf Cleric every single time
The *Sleep* spell now requires you to fail *2 Wisdom saving throws* to take effect. Cleric and Druid are the two classes that are the most unlikely to fail 2 Wis saves in a row, so save your elves for the other classes if you're afraid of enemy mages casting Sleep.
Sleep is now less powerful at those lowest levels. But it scales much, much better.

Actually, you don't need miracles in dnd to believe in gods. One of the assumptions for every multiverse written in DMG 2014 is that gods are factual. They exist and they cannot be denied.
