A pair of these in a studio will cover everything from tracking to mixdown, without compromise. Its one of the few peices that is worth more than the asking price. Took me a year to realize just how much it will do.
After preamp a distressor for peaks leveling into an 1176 type compressor will make a great combo for vocals. If you have 2 distressor units, one can simulate the opto and the other the fet compressor. Then you can also use the 2 units for stereo buses compression or to run signal w/o compressing with distortion for adding analog flavour. In conclusion what is better than a distressor? Two distressors 😁.
I heard the "reverse effect" at 9:19, listen how the start of your speech is kinda low in volume, but then the body of it blooms up real loud, like your ts ch t y transient sounds are kinda quiet, but the ah oh oo yo O vowel sounds are loud, and they bloom up from the transient, that's what they mean by "reverse effect" I think.
I have the Distressor EL8X just one and I absolutely love it. I’ve always wanted to get a second one so I could have a stereo pair for obvious reasons. I also have the Obsidian stereo compressor 19 inch rack version which is fantastic more SSL G compressor style but I find myself using the distressor a lot more. Do you think it’s worth selling the Obsidian stereo compressor to buy another distressor EL8X ? Ty
Thanks for the wonderful video, since I have a vision problem I love the fact that you went through each knob setting and gave me the exact information where I need to place everything this really was a great video thanks a lot👍
I have a similar set up running a EL9 Mike E Channel Strip into the UA Neve 1073. Vocals only need some Autotune and EQ in the Daw. Maybe some delay and reverb as well.
Great review bro! I just ordered mine, I have an Avalon 737, So am I just taking the XLR that goes into my Apollo right now and running that into the EL8 then get 1 more XLR to go back into the Apollo? So basically Mic-Avalon-EL8-Apollo all with XLR?
@@lortakeover2129 i cant tell if it's the same one but on sweetwater there's one... i think the company is called "RAB" they make a lot of studio workstation items. there's a 2 lot rackmount like the one in this vid on there 💯
Great teaching, so what neve 1073 + EL8x is a good vocal chain to get before we stack up for CL1B. You saying it's a great substitute. And how is it sounding for rap vocals compared to the CL1B plugin + Neve 1073 Analogue?
Honestly man this compress has been a huge step forward in quality my vocals sound extremely professional but more on this coming soon comparing it to plugins. Thanks for watching!
Your channel gold for rapper I look on UA-cam everyday I feel like your videos are honest and you really about quailty I got your set up because of you I’m getting this compressor next
After 20+ years of eyeing the Distressor, I finally purchased one last year. I agree with you, the packaging is strange. You would think EL would put a bit more effort into the packaging instead of using cardboard... with that said, theres a reason every professional has at least one of these. There is no other compressor on the market that is as flexible as the Distressor. You can use it on vocals, guitars, bass, drums, etc... no other compressor comes close to this flexibility. And Dist 2 and Dist 3 is the real deal. Again, flexibility for days. I`ll be purchasing a second Distressor in another year or so. The CL-1b is definitely tempting but it costs almost 3x the price and does not cover all the sound sources.
@@G-O-N-x Most of my vocals are recorded through a Mojave MA-200 mic going into the Rupert Neve Shelford Channel, followed by the Distressor which I use most for the Dist 2 and grabbing the peaks.
Guys, you don't need a Neve 1073 and a distressor for rap. Just use the input on your audio interface. For rap you don't need soft transients from Marinair transformers. Just take a good condensor mic and get a good audio interface and go straight into the box. There you compress the vocals and shape them like you want them with EQ and so on. Don't waste your money.
Yea bro keep going you don’t need a computer for rap just use your phone. You don’t need a good mic either huh. Just use Apple headphones. You don’t need a good room just use your bathroom to record vocals. Why stop at a good microphone. Take it all the way bro. If you wanna be cheap be cheap.
@@30killabeatz Cheap isn't always bad. That's where your thinking is wrong. There are very good recordings of singers with an SM57 for instance. 100 bucks.
@@Sagerydian just because you can do it on a budget doesn’t mean everyone has to. Doesn’t mean it’s always the best option. Facts are facts. One of the best compressor reviews I've seen
If you want to put this compressor on your final mix/master out bus, do you have to have two of them for stereo?
Yes

Isnt that LINK to LINK 2 stereo distressors together?
Yup but when nothing is linked to it, it also adds more distortion if distortion is turned on. Thanks for watching
