Balkan Gypsy Music

- Romani music or Gipsy music is the music of the Romani people, who have their origins in northern India, but today live mostly in Europe. Historically nomadic, though now largely settled, the Romani people have long acted as entertainers and tradesmen. In many of the places Romanies live they have become known as musicians. The wide distances travelled have introduced a multitude of influences of Byzantine, Greek, Arabic, Indian, Persian, Turkish, Slavic, Romanian, German, Dutch, French, Spanish and even Jewish musical forms. It is difficult to define the parameters of a unified Romani musical style, as there are many differences in melodic, harmonic, rhythmic and formal structures from region to region. Lyrics to Romani songs are often sung in one or more dialects of the Romani language, and dance frequently accompanies Romani music performance.
The quintessentially Spanish flamenco is to a very large extent the music (and dance, or indeed the culture) of the Romani people of Andalusia. Apart from Romani music for local use, in Eastern Europe a separate Romani music originated for entertainment at parties and celebrations. This music drew its themes from Hungarian, Romanian, Russian and other sources. Later on it gained popularity in Western Europe, where many Romani orchestras were active, playing sophisticated melodies of East European origin. Most Romani music is based on the folk music of the countries where the Romani went through or settled. Local music is adopted and performed - usually instrumental - and, slowly, it is transformed into Romani styles, which are usually more complex than the original styles. In its turn, Romani music has greatly influenced the local music.

The Romani originated in the area in what is now south Pakistan and western India known as "Sindh" province. This culture and style can still be heard in Romani music, despite the centuries old diaspora.

Am Habib from born in Nelson Lancashire and I enjoyed reading all your thoughts above ! My mum dad came from Pakistan to England in the 1960s I were born in 1967 moved to London in 1991 and met people from all over the world . At the moment as I get older I switch the tv off abs listen to all this music and this music is the best it all had feelings and makes me feel closer to everyone . Also we were made to speak in different tongs so that we may get to know each other not to become war mongers and this music is a great way I do that . It even influenced my songs but they will never be as good as this . Great to meet you enjoying it all .

It's very interesting because, as a Persian speaker, a lot of times in the music I felt like I was hearing Persian but I couldn't understand anything
Same!!! I'm hearing Greek but don't understand a single word! Also the music is very similar to what Greek music sounds like. I really like it
Romani language is closer to persian than to european languages i think
Sometimes the lyrics is mixed gipsy language with Hungarian sentences.
@@youwillbeloved8069 because Romani is IndoAryan language. IndoAryan languages sound Similar to IndoIranian Languages. So Persian sounds similar.
Greetings from Greece. Beautiful music! Is it possible to write the titles of these songs? Thank you

Olá, meu sonho é um dia conhecer a Hungria , Romenia e os ciganos destas regiões,suas músicas, danças, sua cultura.. Abraços do Brasil.
My roots are in Hungary on my fathers side. This music speaks to me. Despite my father growing up in the former yugoslavia and my birthplace being Australia, Something in this music brings me such joy.
The music has influence of Arvanite,Albanian ,Greek and a bit Turkish
It is very interesting how strongly gypsy music has influenced Spanish and Cuban music
And also how it is influenced by Middle Eastern Arabic Music
@@filopatirgeorge9749 Balkan gypsy music is not influenced from Arabic. Its influenced a lot from Turkish/Byzantine/Greek/Balkan music.
@@petergriffinmk2884 I mean isn't that kinda all the same stuff though? It seems like the Arabic stuff is just part of the near-eastern/mediterranean mix.
@@emlmm88 It's slightly different, Byzantine and Ottoman music borrowed a lot from the Persian, Kurdish and Armenian musical styles, not so much from the Middle East.

We're all a mix, every single one of us, no-one is of "pure" ancestory of anything. The whole of humanity has mixed and mingled for thousands and thousands of years. Cultural heritage is not bound to looks.
The way you talk is the logic of an idiot. It's the same logic the Germans used in the 30s, and we all know how that ended. So best of you to try to stop being a dimwit and try to behave properly.

Up until a few days ago I never was. Now I am, I have accepted myself after 25 years.
Think about it mate, we have the most freedom, yet we have the worst sorrow.
No country, no patriotism, no brotherhood. I am a gypsy from Bulgaria, in a small town called Kavarna. Yet I won't get along with another gypsy from another town.
We are everywhere, yet belong to nowhere. In my own country I am a foreigner. Everyone hates us, discriminates against us, holds prejudice as if we all uneducated, brutal hordes. Some of us maybe, but I will bet you anything that even that brute is a kinder person than your average citizen.
No place to go, nowhere to call a home. Forever cursed to roam the world with nowhere to truly call a home..
@@witchermaster1299 1. What happened a few days ago that made you change your mind? 2. I'm well aware of the prejudice you guys face at home and I understand why you'd feel unwelcome and like you'd never belong. But I do have to say, ethnicity and nationality are two completely different things. This concept is well understood in the west not so much in Eastern Europe where nationalist policies have shaped a lot of people's opinions over the years. But it's true anyway and my point is, at the end of the day you ARE Bulgarian, as well as Romani, that will always be true. The two are just not mutually exclusive. And I see more and more people our age who understand this idea well and have different attitudes than the older generation. I'm hopeful the day comes when you feel welcome in our country
This is Human music I can hear see feel so many parts of the world in here from uk all the way to Japan abs everything in between from north south all abs the globe east to west it’s all the best north to south it knocks me out love it all and all good people
I don't identify myself as a romani, but i do love all the romani culture and artistic expressions. I do know my last name "Montoya" is a very common romani last name in Spain. So maybe it's a blood call. Who knows.
I identify myself as a dancing crab and let me tell ya', I love this music.
Goodness. There is no sh-t like "identifying" as Romani. Either you are Romani or you aren't. You don't identify or not with an ethnicity 💀
And having Romani heritage is not the same as being Romani.
Very Sicilian style from my home town
3:01 my favourite
It's hard to determine where Gypsy came from - India probably. They are all over the Europe. Regardless what country they are from they combine country folk music with their characteristic style which can not be mistaken. Amazing how much their music have on classical music for instance List , Bartok or Bizet and Brahms
