Incidentally: This was very nearly a game in which the Whammy came away with nothing for the day, up until Donna lost her five figures on the last spin. (Not to be confused with a Whammy-free game since Mike's first spin hit one, but this still came that one spin away from them taking away bupkis.)
You said John was the lone challenger. The only way Donna would be "not a challenger" would be if she'd been a previous winner - being brought back doesn't automatically make her "not a challenger".
In regards to Donna being on a previous show, ironically enough, the defending champ Mike won his last episode in the final spin against Marlene, who herself would be brought back in a later episode. Donna also lost in the final spin here, but it wasn’t as nearly dramatic as the last episode. While she hit a whammy, she was going to need something pretty drastic to win anyhow. Mike and Marlene was pretty dramatic and determined by the last spin.
There was a situation like that later in 1985 with the Joe/Jerry/Kathy episode (480) Joe was the returning champion, Jerry was a champion who was brought back due to the Sylvester/Daffy Duck question and Kathy (who won) was the only new player There were a few others, most notably in episode 467 with Pam (also from the Sylvester episode) playing against Lisa (who eventually lost to Steve Bryant)
NinjaDragon22 not necessarily. The game had been whammy-light up to that point. Why not play the odds? Besides, he already won the previous day, so if it didn't work, he wasn't leaving with parting gifts.
14:59 With three spins left, If Mike hit a Whammy on the next spin, he would have a difficult time to catch up to John with just two spins. There is approximately a one in six chance of hitting a Whammy, so passing your spins in the hopes of your opponent hitting a Whammy works best when the opponent has to take several forced spins.
I wouldn't say it was dumb....Just because a choice didn't work out doesn't make it wrong...Mike thought John was going to hit a whammy which he didn't....

No, Donna wasn't also a previous winner. She was brought back, but she would also be a "challenger", too.

I didn’t say she previously won anything.

Dumb of Mike to pass while trailing by $100

sirharry13 Also further more, 4 of those & it’s Game Over for you.
Yeah - if he'd had just one spin left with a difference of next-to-nothing, that'd be dumb. 3 left at least has some strategy.
