  • In this video we discuss The Chicago Grid System - a plan that began in 1901 by Edward P. Brennan for prefixing, numbering, and naming Chicago Streets.
    This video is broken down into 10 simple facts that will help you to learn Chicago's Grid System.
    Before the Chicago Grid came into existence as we know it, it was very difficult to get around Chicago - there was no uniform naming and numbering system and the city was broken into three divisions - North, South, and West.
    As Chicago gobbled up smaller cities around it in the late 1800s like Lake View Township, Hyde Park, and Jefferson Township, things became further complicated because each of these towns had their own street naming and numbering system.
    In 1901, Edward P. Brennan wrote a letter to the city of Chicago suggesting that they move over to grid plan with State St and Madison St being the zero point. It would take several years and though thing were changed from the original plan, eventually The Chicago Grid was born.
    The Grid isn't super difficult to learn but there are some nuances that you should pick up on to learn how to navigate Chicago.
    Chicago is laid out on an x-y axis (Cartesian Coordinate System) with the zero point at State & Madison in The Loop. Every street and building in Chicago is numbered according to its location relative to this point.
    When I moved to Chicago for grad school after college I knew it would be important to learn how to get around Chicago using the Grid system.
    I hope you enjoyed this Chicago Vlog / Living & Travel Guide!

    What up fam? Thanks so much for watching this video on The Chicago Grid, one of the best grid plans for a major city. Big shouts to Edward P. Brennan for the plan. What's your favorite fact about Chicago streets? Here's one - Western Avenue is so named because it was once the western border of Chicago!

      Here's one which I cannot cite, Western is the longest continuous street in the world. I don't remember where I learned this piece of information but it seems pretty close to reality, from the looks of things haha. Thanks for a nice video.
      P.S. Where did you get your Chicago hoodie? I've been looking for something to rock on and show my Chicago swag.

    Love it. Good job.
    My high school offered a history class strictly on Chicago. I never took it, but I heard that one test was learning the grid system and using that knowledge to find addresses on a map. I now wish I took it. Sorta reminds me of the test where prospective London cabbies must master and memorize the London streets in order to pass and get their license.

    • @LuisGustoComedy
      @LuisGustoComedy  4 роки тому

      Really appreciate that! Sounds like a fun test lol. I've heard that those guys really need to learn London like the back of their hand because of all the winding roads, they don't have the benefit of a grid over there!

    This is a really excellent video! Born and raised in the city and still learned new stuff in this. I would just add the 5th Ave on the West Side is actually the lowest-numbered street in the city, although you might have intentionally kept that out bc it has nothing to do with the South Side numbering. I honestly have no idea why it was named that but I’d love to find out in a future video haha

      So , Stony Island , Cottage Grove, and Jeffery are all main streets based off of how busy the street is.
      So what is another way that I know that cottage grove , jeffery , and Stony island are main streets?
      Also , If I'm driving and I stop at the red light on jeffery and Someone tells me they live on the Yates, how am I suppose to know if Yates is east or west of jeffery.
      Is east side always on the right and west side is on the left?

    • @tross3868
      @tross3868 Рік тому

      Also , for example that he gave 9500 south. Doesnt that just let me know that I'm on the south side of Madison? If it were 9500 north that would mean I'm on the north side madison.
      In other words 9500 south would let me know I'm on the south side of chicago??
      9500 north would mean I'm on the Northside of chicago which would be downtown?
      If I'm on 75th and blackstone which is after stony island , stony island is on the south side of Chicago and I know that 51st and blackstone is in Hyde Park. What does that make hyde park , does that mean hyde park is north east. If hyde park is the east side?
      In order for me to get to 51st and blackstone if I'm on 75th and blackstone . Does that mean that as I go from 75th to 51st that I'll end up in hyde park?
