Thanks for the great videos! I bought a bgs 9.0 beta earthbind for 120 right before the spike in price. It is the most expensive card I ever bought, I just always loved the artwork and had to have one and its crazy I did at the right time!
@AlphaHoarder I wanted to mention how much I appreciate your videos. I really like the one you did on the misprints of alpha, you even got one of the actual artists to comment! Or like the portal 3 one on preconstructed decks, I knew nothing about portal 3, so I really like the history and investment side which leads to learning. I think your channel will grow so much when more people find you and I think you have a great back log of videos for people to watch when they do find you.

I think I've figured out the trick with investing in old border foils. The trick is not to invest in the best cards like City of Brass and Birds of Paradise, they'll inevitably get reprinted with the exact same artwork if WotC continues its trend, so their growth will be stifled. You need to actually buy the worst, bulkiest, old border foils like Trap Digger. They are so absolutely terrible that there is no way they will ever get reprinted, so it's almost like a reserve list. Next thing you know, your 50 cent card is now worth 3 dollars, score!
I disagree. I buy og old border foils to pimp out my decks as do other people. I don't even know what the digger card is. Why would I want it? Who would want it. Just sounds like greater fool hot potato passing. After all the fees you're making a dollar for a card that might likely never sell, cheap stuff is cheap for a reason.
@@yorionenthusiast170 I was being sarcastic as I picked out quite possibly the worst rare ever printed, but if you look at it from an investment standpoint it does have merit. 10 years from now, if you look at Birds of Paradise compared to Trap Digger, I can pretty confidently say that Trap Digger will have a greater % gain comparably. BoP hits the sweet spot because it is rare, collectible, and playable- but it has also jumped in price multiple times already. Foil Trap Digger is absolutely not playable, but it is rare as well as collectible for people looking for complete foil sets. It has also never jumped in price before. Would you want to put it in your EDH deck?...no, but that's not the only reason people buy these cards. An Unlimited Animate Wall is a terrible, unplayable rare- but it is still $40 because it is both rare and collectible. It may be hard to believe, but I would also guess that there's roughly twice as many Unlimited Animate Walls in existence compared to foil Trap Diggers. So should a foil Trap Digger be 50cents right now? Probably not.
@@suazaa8719 I'm not sure that is the case. If Magic takes off harder as a collectible a 7th edition foil birds could be 10k, whereas trap digger will probably still sit at 3 dollars and be incredibly illiquid.

Love the video and your pickups from 2022, especially the story of how you picked up the doppelgangers! My favorite addition this year is probably an alpha white knight...one of the first alpha cards I've acquired. When I first started playing magic during revised/4th edition I always liked the card and now being able to own the alpha edition is pretty special!
Bought a lot of amazing cards this year, but the coolest additions to my collection were not individual cards. 1) A PSA Graded pack of Arabian Nights, Antiquities, Legends and Revised. And some loose packs of The Dark. I had never seen a pack of Arabian Nights or Antiquities in my life and hadn’t seen a pack of Legends or The Dark in almost 30 years. 2) An empty booster box of Antiquities, Legends and The Dark to display. Makes me smile every time I see them. So cool 😁
Oh yeah talk about capturing the nostalgia! There is something really special about the old packaging. Such a little time capsule, holding cardboard and oxygen straight from the 90s! Nice pickups

I did not even know the harry potter ones exist. There was a shattered glass Workshop floating around a couple of weeks ago which was the coolest alter I have ever seen. My biggest pickup this year was a BGS 9.5 Bazaar I could trade for.
After taking 23 years off from the game, I fixed up some loose ends. I put together a full Urza's block set plus play sets, all "near mint" (for the most part -- grrr -- Ed over at Dual Brain is absolutely correct about "near mint" not being the same as it once was). The hardest thing to find was the basic lands in sufficient quantities that weren't abused. Finished out my wife's Antiquities and The Dark sets, and made progress on getting her Unlimited, Legends, and Arabian Nights sets. I've got my targets for 2023 -- nothing as ambitious as this year though -- I'm very good at delimiting my collection goals.

Love that Workshop, would be my 1st pick! But the others are great as well, very few things beat those Doppelgangers. For myself, I had a rather calm collecting year. My favorite is probably yet another Firestorm Phoenix, I just love that first ever Phoenix and I find the Jeff Menges artwork to be one of the best in MTG. Hey, and I also bought a good printer, I can't buy every expensive card I need for my decks... ;)
@@AlphaHoarder I'm moderately lenient since I play with them but I will say MP/HP old border foils look really bad so if your main goal is eye candy then Alpha cards arw way better. I don't even mind HP alpha cards they look "loved". HPOld border foils just look bad so I try to do NM.
I've been buying lots of old FBB cards of the old set. Same great artwork and sometimes a better printing. Then selling off most of my beta copies of the FBB cards I picked up .
Yeah, you know I’ve noticed something with the saturation or the color balance… Not sure what it is exactly, but some of those really are quite stunning!
Very nice! The foil BoP is something that irks me, as I had one that I bought for £250 and sold for 500ish euro when I sold a whole commander deck to pay off a collection of small debts. I thought it would never go any higher than that price anyway. Oh how I was mistaken!
In all fairness to your past self, I don’t think anybody could’ve imagined how expensive they would get… Some of which is definitely market manipulation. Unloading for double your investment is a win in my book!
Great video! haha, "This Is Halloween" is also my 5year old's favorite song. And some nice reminders at the end about how to treat people. My favorite cards added to my collection this year were: An Unlimited Mox Ruby, an All Hallow's Eve that I got on Halloween Day, a gorgeous Hazezon Tamar (A card I've wanted to build a Dune theme EDH deck with for 11 years), and last but not least an Unlimited Shadowless Charizard (one day I'll find a 1st)
Hidden treasure is buried in my mtg and mtgo collections. I swear! Theres at least $50 bucks in there. My proudest pickups for the year were 3 revised duals. Working on finishing a set. Played too long not to own them, just too much off and on. Wish I had invested even 5 years ago for sure.

The nostalgia is real for me with legacy... and vintage. I started playing in 1996, almost same time and age as you (36 here). But I was connected to the game via friends. My mom was too busy (single mom for years) so by the time she realized it had saved my life from the crazier shit I was already almost 18 and leaving. I say that because I can see myself almost being in your shoes, and where our paths diverged. If I had a parent that supported my hobby where would my collection be. I almost qualified for pro tour without support, and when I told my mom (at 16) that I did she blew the idea off as whimsical... I don't say this to make you feel bad, part of the fun and joy of this is the memories. Good and bad, and how our lives connect in unique ways. Its cathartic in a way to hear your story with MTG. So keep on keeping on and thank you for sharing. Whether this is the last video or you have a million more, thank you.

You should get a Fallen Empires card with a Wyvern back. All 121 commons exist. Also, the Summer Demonic Tutor is missing the pentagram, I think it’s the only version like that unless there’s a foreign copy I’m unaware of. I have a misprinted Alpha Tutor, I can’t remember if I shared it on UA-cam or not. And lastly I have a playtest copy of it that costs 2BW for some strange reason.
Is that one of your videos with the complete Wyvern back set? I can’t remember where I saw that, but it’s very cool. Is it known how many of the Harry Potter backs exist? You have a playtest Tutor!!? Yes I have a full set of Wyvern backed FE, I wouldn’t recommend trying it now! Only commons so no Rainbow Vale, but Hymn, High Tide, Grenade exist. Both Joel and I are missing a gamma Demonic Tutor, Black is a hard color to find any of the good cards. My playtest is early Mirage, but the set underwent many changes.
I saw that! I was watching the auction (but not participating) and was fascinated to see the pieces in that lot sell. I don’t remember the final price, but what you said sounds about right.
the "coolest" thing i got in 2022 wasn't from Magic. got a carrying case with 4 high quality kendo sticks from an estate sale. person must have competed in Japan b/c they had a lot of stuff from there. as a Japanophile myself, it was an absolutely great find.
Nice! You can definitely find some really unique things at estate sales, if you're in the right place at the right time. I'm quite partial to the JP alt art variants in MTG, though I wouldn't call myself a Japanophile. Still, it's very cool stuff!
Do you have any thoughts on DMR and 7th ed foils? Apparently the print quality on DMR foils seems excellent and with cards like WOG, Wild Growth appearing with 7th art. Both cards was previously by far the best version if you wanted foil, but now i doubt EDH-players and enchantress player's are willing to pay a x50-100 multiple for foil 7th when they can just get the DMR version instead. Not sure if they'll drop much though. 7th:ed collectors are much like alpha collectors, with a high willingness to pay, but every other set (maybe sans UL,UD) i'd be worried.
That’s an interesting point. It’s just recorded a video where I talk about some of these categories, but I did not factor in the DMR situation. My first instinct is the players willing to bling a deck by spending hundreds of dollars are going to want the OG cards, regardless of the alternatives. But yeah, you raise a very good point that I need to think about some more 🤔
Hey fellow collector~! Love you passion man, just like me. Did you grab the STX (Strixhaven) Alternate art Demonic Tutors ? My FAVORITE art in a card of all time ! Just GORGEOUS !
Very cool! Most of the stuff I got this year wasn't all that noteworthy, but I did get way into the Japanese Strixhaven alt-arts, so I bought more Japanese set boxes than I'd like to admit (if anyone wants some random-ass Strixhaven cards that I can't read, I'm on cardsphere.... ). I'm a weirdo who likes to open packs and chase cards that way, in certain cases, and this was one of them. I believe I've pulled everything except for Approach of the Second Sun and Day of Judgement. Otherwise, I've been chasing a foil jeweled lotus, specifically from the collector's product, and, while I have not yet gotten the fabled lotus (I have regular ones... I want the extended foil, blah blah blah), I accidentally ended up with 99 out of 100 of the foil etched set. As soon as Sakashima shows up, I'll have 'em all, and it'll be fun to frame them and put them on my wall. Weirdly, Commander Legends is know for how fucked up their foils were, but the etched foils are perfect. Finally, the Warhammer products really made me smile, and I've been picking up foils of staples when I can. Dark Ritual is a "common," but it's a pre-con, you're getting one copy of that, and one copy of the mythics, so each time I get a foil Brainstorm, that's one less "complete" 40k Collector's Edition someone has, and one more killer looking foil I have of one of my favorite cards. Downside: Those foils are *not* ok, they are super warped, to the point where I'm looking at comic book press machines. I've ended up in a dark place, thanks 2022.
haha I think 2022 took many of us to a dark place 😂 I love the chase, sounds like you made some cool collection pieces out of it -- Hope you can cap off the two JP strixhaven and the one foil etched in 2023!
I haven’t seen very many, and of course the specific card and condition matter, so hard to say in general… The cheapest I’ve seen was about $2k. Then there’s a big premium for cards that can be played face down, several of which exist among these error cards (which you can imagine makes for a very cool game board).
😅 I do have one other global set… and it’s Serra Angel. That week was not my best execution of sticking to the budget. I also grabbed one of his beta proofs, and then watched - wishing I could stretch a bit further - as his absolutely beautiful Lord of the Pit and Siren‘s Call proofs sold.

You should get a Fallen Empires card with a Wyvern back. All 121 commons exist. Also, the Summer Demonic Tutor is missing the pentagram, I think it’s the only version like that unless there’s a foreign copy I’m unaware of. I have a misprinted Alpha Tutor, I can’t remember if I shared it on UA-cam or not. And lastly I have a playtest copy of it that costs 2BW for some strange reason.
Is that one of your videos with the complete Wyvern back set? I can’t remember where I saw that, but it’s very cool. Is it known how many of the Harry Potter backs exist?

Yes I have a full set of Wyvern backed FE, I wouldn’t recommend trying it now! Only commons so no Rainbow Vale, but Hymn, High Tide, Grenade exist.
Both Joel and I are missing a gamma Demonic Tutor, Black is a hard color to find any of the good cards. My playtest is early Mirage, but the set underwent many changes.
speaking of dtutor, the art for it sold recently (within the past yr or so i think) for suprisingly cheap on heritage (iirc it was around $130k)
I saw that! I was watching the auction (but not participating) and was fascinated to see the pieces in that lot sell. I don’t remember the final price, but what you said sounds about right.
the "coolest" thing i got in 2022 wasn't from Magic. got a carrying case with 4 high quality kendo sticks from an estate sale. person must have competed in Japan b/c they had a lot of stuff from there. as a Japanophile myself, it was an absolutely great find.
Nice! You can definitely find some really unique things at estate sales, if you're in the right place at the right time. I'm quite partial to the JP alt art variants in MTG, though I wouldn't call myself a Japanophile. Still, it's very cool stuff!
Do you have any thoughts on DMR and 7th ed foils? Apparently the print quality on DMR foils seems excellent and with cards like WOG, Wild Growth appearing with 7th art. Both cards was previously by far the best version if you wanted foil, but now i doubt EDH-players and enchantress player's are willing to pay a x50-100 multiple for foil 7th when they can just get the DMR version instead.
Not sure if they'll drop much though. 7th:ed collectors are much like alpha collectors, with a high willingness to pay, but every other set (maybe sans UL,UD) i'd be worried.
That’s an interesting point. It’s just recorded a video where I talk about some of these categories, but I did not factor in the DMR situation. My first instinct is the players willing to bling a deck by spending hundreds of dollars are going to want the OG cards, regardless of the alternatives. But yeah, you raise a very good point that I need to think about some more 🤔

Very cool! Most of the stuff I got this year wasn't all that noteworthy, but I did get way into the Japanese Strixhaven alt-arts, so I bought more Japanese set boxes than I'd like to admit (if anyone wants some random-ass Strixhaven cards that I can't read, I'm on cardsphere.... ). I'm a weirdo who likes to open packs and chase cards that way, in certain cases, and this was one of them. I believe I've pulled everything except for Approach of the Second Sun and Day of Judgement.
Otherwise, I've been chasing a foil jeweled lotus, specifically from the collector's product, and, while I have not yet gotten the fabled lotus (I have regular ones... I want the extended foil, blah blah blah), I accidentally ended up with 99 out of 100 of the foil etched set. As soon as Sakashima shows up, I'll have 'em all, and it'll be fun to frame them and put them on my wall. Weirdly, Commander Legends is know for how fucked up their foils were, but the etched foils are perfect.
Finally, the Warhammer products really made me smile, and I've been picking up foils of staples when I can. Dark Ritual is a "common," but it's a pre-con, you're getting one copy of that, and one copy of the mythics, so each time I get a foil Brainstorm, that's one less "complete" 40k Collector's Edition someone has, and one more killer looking foil I have of one of my favorite cards. Downside: Those foils are *not* ok, they are super warped, to the point where I'm looking at comic book press machines. I've ended up in a dark place, thanks 2022.
haha I think 2022 took many of us to a dark place 😂 I love the chase, sounds like you made some cool collection pieces out of it -- Hope you can cap off the two JP strixhaven and the one foil etched in 2023!

I haven’t seen very many, and of course the specific card and condition matter, so hard to say in general… The cheapest I’ve seen was about $2k. Then there’s a big premium for cards that can be played face down, several of which exist among these error cards (which you can imagine makes for a very cool game board).
Did you also buy the serra angel artist proof?
😅 I do have one other global set… and it’s Serra Angel. That week was not my best execution of sticking to the budget. I also grabbed one of his beta proofs, and then watched - wishing I could stretch a bit further - as his absolutely beautiful Lord of the Pit and Siren‘s Call proofs sold.
That serra angel is amazing. Looking forward to seeing it.
