At the comments about the brownies I was just thinking, "If you people don't like it because it's too unhealthy - what on earth are you doing at McDonald's then?"
I can explain the Lent thing! Back when these traditions were just starting, the word "meat" only referred to "warm meat", meaning meat from land animals (beef, pork, poultry, etc.) It was thought that 'warm meat' would increase lustful thoughts, whereas fish and other seafood would not.
Chicken selects were a failure?? They're still available in the UK! Well, in England, at least, they were always part of my go-to McDonald's order when I lived there, and I ordered them again when I visited, decent chicken strips! I really wish I was around to try those onion nuggets, though
I remember in the 90's they had these salad shakers. It was a salad in a big cup. You poured the dressing on it, put the dome lid on it, and shook it up. They tasted amazing, which probably has something to do with why they were discontinued. The nutrition facts on them were just horrifying. It was like eating a two hamburgers, a medium fries, and a small soda, only it had WAY more sodium than those items put together. So much for a healthy salad! They tasted great, though.

Fun Fact: In most Asian countries, notably Indonesia and Malaysia, McDonalds still sells fried chicken, and funnily enough, it's even more popular than the burgers.
I remember hearing about Mcdonald's "Hawaiian" burger, which was basically pineapple slices and cheese on a hamburger bun. "Hawaiian" pizza has more effort than that.
I think as of the modern day, Maccas could bring back the McDLT. Perhaps the cardboard could keep both sides at their proper temps while being biodegradable.
PhantomStrider videos always brighten up my day! While I love the cartoon videos, I personally think the food videos are even more interesting. As for my thoughts on these items: I think the Onion Nuggets and Mclean Deluxe burger should be tried again, as they sounded like good ideas. For Brownie Bites, I adore brownie and chocolate in general, but I'm not too sure about MCDONALD'S making brownies. I believe moderation in food is key, but sometimes these fast food chains go overboard with calorie-filled items. Hey Josh, can I leave a suggestion? Could you cover mascots in the future, whether it be fast food, snack, drink, or theme park? Seems like a nice mix of cartoons and food. Some mascots are even voiced by famous actors! For example, the 1970s incarnation of Jack from Jack In The Box Restaurants was voiced by Paul Winchell. Sadly, only three 1970s Jack In The Box Restaurant commercials [Baseball, In The Park, Jack In The Box Animated Commercial 1970s], and three comics [How A House Makes Noise, Where Oil Comes From, How Pain Helps Us] are on UA-cam, but I'm thankful we even have any at all, considering Jack In The Box tries to pretend their past doesn't exist. I do recommend checking these 70s JITB ads and comics out though, they're very charming. And some mascots, such as The California Raisins, were so popular that they were EVERYWHERE. The Raisins even won an EMMY for their Meet The Raisins special and said special got a sequel: Raisins Sold Out. I highly recommend both specials, as they have tons of funny jokes and reference to real life bands, heck, the humor in them even kind of remind me of Veggietales.
11:25 Yeah these days that price seems amazing, but for the time you could find much better deals. I remember a local grocery store used to do 'Toonie Tuesdays' you could get a box with 3 chicken tenders, and a scoop of potato wedges for only a Toonie ($2) which was quite the deal.
Whenever I hear from people who frequent McDonald's where I live the main takeaway is how fast and convenient it is to grab before or after their workshift. A decent chunk of these by comparison seem like they either take awhile to make or are a small portion. I get a few of these though onion nuggets sound delishious in particular.

Bojangles is a fried-chicken restaurant here in the US South, but they also serve a pretty nice slate of breakfast items all day long. One of these is "Bo-tato Rounds", which are shredded fried potato puffs with a very distinct onion presence; they are incredibly moreish, well-seasoned with whatever herbs and spices Bo's chooses to use. That's what McDonald's should have done instead of Onion Nuggets -- make a Tater Tots-adjacent product with onion and the right herbs and spices in it.

I for one actually remember the mighty wings of 2013 very fondly. My mom and I would go every once in a while and get 6 pieces each with some of their ranch. They were honestly great. When they took the mighty wings away and we only had chicken nuggets again it just wasn’t the same. McNuggets are fine but no sane human being is gonna describe then as “great tasting” or even “tasting like chicken” at all.
as a texan who grew up with a hard working single spanish + cuban mother: i never tried the spanish omlette bagel. but the description reminded me of the spanish tortillas my mom would make us for breakfast, sounds heavy but man oh man it was DELICOUS!! my mom always looked at me sideways when i put ketchup all over it and picked out the bell peppers haha! it takes me back so much!
The bagels were actually well-received around my area (Midwest USA, that's as specific as i'm getting). We had a *lot* of ticked off customers when those things were cancelled.

oh, mcdonald’s. i’m gonna be honest, i’ve never had a good experience with their food. but their history is interesting. and strider never fails to make anything and everything sound interesting.
Maccies is one food I don’t understand why people eat, it’s really tasting bad food, isn’t filling, and is very bad for your health. If people like their food then fair enough, taste is highly subjective. It’s really not up my alley, I’d have literally anything else before I Maccies. Even a crappy Greggs pasty.
McDonald's is legit expensive nowadays.. and there were a time where they used the dough for pastries as buns.. The restaurant was colder throught decades, more bland..
I liked the wings. Also i think the big error with the onion nuggets was marketing them as an entree. As a side I'd love to see them come back. Because I'd love a side alternative to the fries, which i don't understand why some people think are awesome.
6:45 Note: Africa in danish (And possibly Norwegian, don't quote me on that) is spelled as Afrika, so rather than being spelled wrong it was more using a different language Also the McCrqouette actually sounds delicious to me
4:15 - "Can you imagine a McDonalds making fresh bread every day?" Yeah... but we don't call restaurants that make McStuffins as their signature dish McDonalds. We call them Runza.
I recall McDonald's briefly tried selling fried chicken and roast beef sandwiches in the late 1960s. I don't know if they were ever offered nationally, but the McDonald's in southern California definitely had them. Around 1989-90, they also briefly sold a burger based on the Philly cheese steak, though I can't remember the exact name of it. It was a single beef patty served on a rye bun with sauteed onions and cheese sauce. I loved it!
Regarding the spelling of the McAfrika: Afrika is how it is spelled in Danish and Norwegian, so I think that's why it was spelled like that, since it was launched in those countries 😊
Honestly I loved the Arch Deluxe, it makes me think of good times I had with my two older brothers (one of whom died last year). Never really heard of some of the foods on here, that one with the mystery brown sauce, it doesn't sound too appealing. One other problem I remember having with the Styrofoam containers is that when we'd get breakfast from McDonald's and I got the pancakes/hotcakes and sausage, my fork would always end up poking holes into the Styrofoam when I was trying to get a bite of the pancakes or sausage and syrup would go onto the table instead at that point. Am I the only one that would happen to?
Been watching you for ages now and you remind me of my friend Steve back at school. He was all about cool trivia, juggling and being funny. He's also very straight-laced.

I remember the Sausage Egg and Cheese McBagel so vividly! It had a sort of mint colored special sauce that was delicious and was my favorite McDonald's breakfast item, and i was so sad to see it go! I'm glad to know it hasn't been forgotten! 😄
Actually the bagel is still on the menu over in the USA just not in more than the regular sausage egg and cheese or bacon egg and cheese both with a creamy hollandaise like breakfast sauce and it's my legit favorite breakfast item!
When it comes to the brownie bites, I suspect that the comments of them being too sweet may just be the internet being the internet. I’ve always seen comments on desert videos on UA-cam (in particular YT Shorts so this probably be taken with a grain of salt) a lot of people complain about almost any desert video I tend to see people complaining about the amount of sugar. One example were these “Cookie Monster cookies” which were literally just regular chocolate chip cookies colored blue. Although to be fair, I may just be showing that I’m a fat ass.
The McAfrika wasn't a grammar mistake, actually. In Norwegian and Danish, you use a k instead of a c for Africa; the same goes with Swedish and German. It seems like a lot of European countries say "Afrika."
The Chicken Selects were actually really good, but they were so in demand that most stores couldn't keep up their stock. While at the same time, people realized that you could just go to any restaurant or chicken place to get the same thing as what they are: Just chicken fingers. On a side note there is a restaurant called Raising Cane's that only sells chicken fingers and they are AMAZING.

I can explain the Lent thing! Back when these traditions were just starting, the word "meat" only referred to "warm meat", meaning meat from land animals (beef, pork, poultry, etc.) It was thought that 'warm meat' would increase lustful thoughts, whereas fish and other seafood would not.
Which is funny, seeing how certain types of seafood are said to have aphrodisiac properties...
fish is nasty anyways meat is beetter who would pick fish over meat?

Chicken selects were a failure?? They're still available in the UK! Well, in England, at least, they were always part of my go-to McDonald's order when I lived there, and I ordered them again when I visited, decent chicken strips! I really wish I was around to try those onion nuggets, though
You know your day is made whenever PhantomStrider posts a video.
Yes!
💯
i agree
yep
100% Agree
I remember in the 90's they had these salad shakers. It was a salad in a big cup. You poured the dressing on it, put the dome lid on it, and shook it up. They tasted amazing, which probably has something to do with why they were discontinued. The nutrition facts on them were just horrifying. It was like eating a two hamburgers, a medium fries, and a small soda, only it had WAY more sodium than those items put together. So much for a healthy salad! They tasted great, though.
He mentioned those in another video, I think it was something like "top ten fast food failures"
The McDonald’s McSalad Shakers from 1999-2006.
“I’m serving billions and I can’t be beat! You’re a bin full of lettuce facing defeat!” Ronald McDonald
Edit: Mikhail Gorbachev: Shook hands with both Ronalds, Regan and McDonald’s no doubt! If your name ends with ‘in’, time to get out!
Aahhh ERBH
I was about to say that
That rap is gangsta. 💵💰
i’m in the UK, chicken selects have not failed at all here, still a permanent menu item and are extremely popular. they’re also really good!
great video btw!
Honestly, in Belgium they have these loaded fries with spicy cheese and honey, it is really good.
I remember reading about that in a copy of Uncle John's Bathroom Reader years ago! I think it was just called "Hula Burger"
Hawaiian burgers tend to also have some kind of tropical sauce like Thousand Island. If they didn't even do that much I pity them.
@@lilsunny7399Thousand Island is not a tropical sauce. Did you mean something else perhaps?
Apparently you can make anything Hawaiian by putting pineapple on it
Honestly, onion nuggets sounds pretty neat. Ever since I had corn nuggets, which is a similar concept, I became open to vegetables in nugget form.
I think as of the modern day, Maccas could bring back the McDLT. Perhaps the cardboard could keep both sides at their proper temps while being biodegradable.
Yeah I don't see why they couldn't use cardboard with some perforation in the center to get it to bend?
Hold on, let him cook (literally)
Upvote on the mascot idea! It's such a good idea!
I have a really bad cold right now, so it's nice to see an upload. I personally love McDonald's, but they sure have had some strange menu items...
Get better soon friend.
Hope you feel better soon
11:25 Yeah these days that price seems amazing, but for the time you could find much better deals. I remember a local grocery store used to do 'Toonie Tuesdays' you could get a box with 3 chicken tenders, and a scoop of potato wedges for only a Toonie ($2) which was quite the deal.
"McCrappiest" is a nickname I thoroughly use to describe McDonald's in general.
McDonald's : "I'm lovin' it."
McDowell's : "I'm loving IT."
I actually liked the Mighty Wings. The melts were good, too
My favorites were the McDonalds snack wraps, I miss them
I liked the Mighty Wings too. They were good
your videos are always so ripe with positivity and wholesomeness! it's great watching videos by someone whom you can tell has a blast making them. i subscribed the other day after binging some of your fast food top 10s and i cant wait to see what's next!
6:43 The McAfrika wasn't a misspelling that's just how Norwegians and Danes spell it in their languages
I want to try Bojangles so bad I wish there was one in California 😔
@@Djay-tz3in I actually have one near my new house. I had no idea the restaurant existed until we saw one near the hotel we stayed in while moving, and then I learn there's one just past our local grocery store.
12:33 We actually still have Chicken Selects in the UK. I get them fairly often when I fancy McDonald's, but I don't want it that much. I've had McDonald's so many times that I'm bored of it, so I don't have it much. Unless it's breakfast, which is served until 11 AM here, don't know about Australia, but if I somehow end up with McDonald's for lunch or dinner, my day usually gets significantly worse. Breakfast isn't too bad though.
How Rhett and Link aren’t having you on their show because you promote them so much is beyond me! You totally deserve that!
the word mccrappy has been added to my vocabulary
This video is bussin AND we got a GMM clip. Heck yeah glad to see you upload keep it up!!
I couldn't think of a better video to watch as I sit down and enjoy my 7AM double sausage (no egg thanks) mcmuffin and hash brown! Love fast food fascinations.
LMAO, double sausage no egg, not all heros wear capes.
Great video. Even if the little think about McAfrika is... it wasn't spelled wrong. I know it's a tiny detail in the grand scheme of things but it is spelled with a 'k' in the countries where it was introduced.
So true, I always said their nuggets taste better when they 1st came out,but now they're not the same.
@@blackbolt3685They used to be dark meat.
as a texan who grew up with a hard working single spanish + cuban mother: i never tried the spanish omlette bagel. but the description reminded me of the spanish tortillas my mom would make us for breakfast, sounds heavy but man oh man it was DELICOUS!! my mom always looked at me sideways when i put ketchup all over it and picked out the bell peppers haha! it takes me back so much!
Yay more Phantom Strider food content 🍔🍟🥤
The bagels were actually well-received around my area (Midwest USA, that's as specific as i'm getting). We had a *lot* of ticked off customers when those things were cancelled.
Interesting. The McStuffins look like a crossover between a hot pocket and a Runza sandwich. Runza is a restaurant chain located in Nebraska and a few other states in the central US.
Hello fellow Nebraskan
Glad I’m not the only who knows of Runza.
@patrickgowen324 I was 7 when I left Nebraska, but I was around 5 or 6 when I first ate at Runza, and it was delicious.
Hahaha Nim comparing DLT assembly to an IKEA furniture assembly was genius
oh, mcdonald’s. i’m gonna be honest, i’ve never had a good experience with their food. but their history is interesting. and strider never fails to make anything and everything sound interesting.
@@PansyPops*McDonald's
I liked the wings. Also i think the big error with the onion nuggets was marketing them as an entree. As a side I'd love to see them come back. Because I'd love a side alternative to the fries, which i don't understand why some people think are awesome.
The fries are just a vector for grease and salt. As a manual labor worker, i love em.
6:45 Note: Africa in danish (And possibly Norwegian, don't quote me on that) is spelled as Afrika, so rather than being spelled wrong it was more using a different language
Also the McCrqouette actually sounds delicious to me
I was waiting for a comment like this.
Yes, Africa is spelled as "Afrika" in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, German, Dutch and many other languages.
@@TrocaTheNero Including Afrikaans, a language in South Africa!
4:15 - "Can you imagine a McDonalds making fresh bread every day?"
Yeah... but we don't call restaurants that make McStuffins as their signature dish McDonalds.
We call them Runza.
I saw the concept of Onion nuggets in The Food That Built America on the History channel.
I loved it!
Strider continues to make my day and be a national treasure
Regarding the spelling of the McAfrika: Afrika is how it is spelled in Danish and Norwegian, so I think that's why it was spelled like that, since it was launched in those countries 😊
Nothing more delicious than watching a phantom strider video😊😊
Chicken Selects were my favorite food from McDonalds. Honestly wish it would have stayed as a permanent menu item

Hello from Pennsylvania, USA. I really like your channel. It's very entertaining and informative.
It’s always a good day when PhantomStrider uploads a new video learning some interesting facts.
Fun fact, chicken selects are still sold and one of the more popular options in the uk
I haven’t really heard of many of these But the onion nuggets. I never heard of them. But I feel like they would definitely do well these days. I’m sure they would taste good. I am curious. Wonder if they’ll ever get brought back
The mighty wings and the chicken selects were really good.
Man! I had ❤ed those! Those were - and had been the best! Before McDonald's took them down.
Those special moments and extraordinary moments of McDonald's had been short-lived.
The failures of Mickey D’s.
Gonna watch this later after I get home from the gym. But based on the thumbnail alone, I have to say that people LOVED the wings. To this day I get people asking about them.

It is more the Spanish omelette one is no longer available
@@Zombiekilleryamato yea and sadly I never got to try it cause I was a baby but I think I would've liked it
As for why the Chicken Selects may have failed (in the US at least), i have three words:
You Better Don't

We still have selects in England, they're so good!
In America, we call them chicken tenders.

The onion nuggets sound awesome, an onion ring that doesn't fall apart? yes!

I remember the Brownie Melts and the Cinnamon Melts! I adored the Cinnamon melts. It was everything you'd want if you love cinnamon buns done in the "gooey" style. As for the brownies? They were okay I guess? I'm not the biggest fan of chocolate, and even less so if it's the only theme in the item.
If you are ever going to redo a video like this. In the Netherlands we have to Mckroket, derived from the broodje kroket. A pretty popular Dutch snack.
The Mckroket has always been a popular item at the Dutch Mcdonalds. It consist of a beef ragout which is rolled in bread crumbs. But last month they replaced the meat for only a vegan option. There was no option to choose between meat or vegan. People got really angry and demanded the one with meat came back on the menu. Now this month they brought back the one with meat and you can choose. But yeah im pretty sure the vegan Mckroket will be a flop
Nothing else than vegan? I would hate it as well.
I'm flexitarian, but i can enjoy meat still.
