Important note that there's been a change in storage location for the Font Library to wp-content/uploads/fonts and a delay in the release by 1 week! More info here: make.wordpress.org/core/2024/03/25/wordpress-6-5-release-delayed-1-week/
Hi, Anne! First of all, many thanks for these guidelines, they are super useful! I'm just wondering how hybrid themes can access the Font Library. Many thanks!
Thanks for the kind words and for watching! Right now, it's not possible since it requires access to Styles: github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/41119
Hi Anne, thanks so much for sharing. I'm just catching up on the feature. Is there anything block theme authors need to change in theme.json or with the way themes upload fonts?
Of course! Nothing needs to change for block themers. The only change for you all is that there is a new font collection feature that theme/plugins can use to register collections for the Font Library. You can see examples of that here: github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/57980
Yes! That's part of the current setup. You can pick and select the exact font weight you want (or download and upload). You have to intentionally select all font weights if you want all.
Anne, thanks as always. Am I correct in thinking that the only way - for now - to use 3rd party fonts (e.g. Adobe Fonts) is to download the font from the service and then upload to the WP site?
Right now, this is just available for block themes! In the future, I expect to see work done to bring it to all themes, similar to this: github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/41119

I'm soooo looking forward to this!!! Elegant font management strikes me as one of the really significant mile-stones in the Gutenberg maturation!
Agreed. But it's a pity WP users need to get excited over finally getting basic functionality that all other applications have had since, what, 1988?
Thank you for sharing, Anne! It is very much appreciated!

Hi @@AnneMcCarthy Many thanks for clarifying this to me!

Thanks for the video Anne. What is your app to record your screen ?
Thanks for watching! I'm using Screen Studio. It's pretty rad.
Great.
Will it be possible to add variabile fonts (e.g. just font weight 500)?
Yes! That's part of the current setup. You can pick and select the exact font weight you want (or download and upload). You have to intentionally select all font weights if you want all.

That's correct! Unless you want to register them in theme.json (if you were a theme author for example).
@@AnneMcCarthy Of course I have to ask - how would I do that? Can you point me to a resource? (Oh, we don't have Google in NJ).
Is that a thing for a Wordpress built in free themes? Thus if u have custom theme, you will not have this new feature?
This is available with block themes for free :) If the theme is a custom block theme, it should work.
Hi Anne, does this only work for themes compatible with FSE? I use Astra Pro and don't see the edit site button in the top menu bar. Thanks.

@@AnneMcCarthy Thank you, Anne!
How do I use Adobe Fonts since they don't let you download them locally to upload?
You'll need to use a plugin like wordpress.org/plugins/custom-typekit-fonts/ in order to access them!
@@AnneMcCarthy I tried that plugin and put my project ID in there, but can't access the fonts in FSE "manage fonts"?
One plugin less…
