Visited Shugborough at the end of our canal holiday last summer. We'd hired an Anglo-Welsh boat from Great Haywood and returned the boat before visiting Shugborough, which was really fascinating. Patrick Litchfield's apartment (large) was well worth a visit and the story of the house provides interesting insights into the lives of a wealthy family in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Although I’ve watched several boat tubers cruise this stretch of canal but you are the first I’ve followed through the hedge to see it up close! Thanks for sharing this very interesting video and for the beautiful photography of the gardens. I really enjoyed this episode.
We visited the Estate last month when we moored at Great Haywood. Unfortunately it was nearly closing time. We had a nice walk around the gardens and the gift shop was very good.
Since I started watching your vlogs and few others about narrow boating. I've added visiting your beautiful country to my bucket list. Probably won't be for 2 of 3 more years from now, but I'm looking forward to it. Thanks girls, you are awesome.
You gals always make the most lovely videos. I usually watch yours and CTC last of the group because they are superb. This one, yet again, full of color, interest, facts, delight! I especially love the footage of the bumble bee on the purple flowers. I'll not make it abroad to see these places, so you're doing such a wonderful service by sharing these places. I remember walking through some of the grounds way back in 1981 whilst on a canal trip to Oxford, from our mooring in Poynton, Cheshire. Back in those days the Hall was a playground for the rich and famous friends of Patrick Lichfield. There were stories of people randomly bumping into Paul and Linda McCartney and Dustin Hoffman whilst passing through :)

Nice to see a boat tuber get to Great Haywood and visit Shugborough. I've Minimalist cruise back and forwards past it several times waiting for them to take George for a walk in the park but no luck. There is a public footpath through the estate so you can access the park without having to pay (and from the canal you have to walk through the park to pay so...), though a visit to the hall is worthwhile. We drop Scouts off in Great Haywood for Expedition hikes through Cannock Chase which is just the other side of the park and also well worth a visit.
We live close to Shrugborough and its always been pleasant. Sadly since the National Trust have took over they've cancelled the Classic Car Show which was an annual highlight. Did enjoy 'Much Ado about nothing' Shakespeare on the lawn outside the farm. The heavens opened! Still loving your adventures, keep on cruising. Thanks.

Well done! I love these "through the hedge" episodes. I've always envisioned using canal cruising as a means of leisurely transportation to spots where I can step off and enjoy historic sites (before I get too old to walk anyway). ps The segment with the bees in the flowers was just exceptional :)
A lovely trip down memory lane to Shugborough on the edge of beautiful Cannock Chase. Thank you for sharing this experience, and all of your adventures. Did you visit royal photographer Lord Lichfield's once private apartment within the house? I once played his Grand Piano and entertained the visitors! Knowing the area and once owning a narrowboat, may I suggest a trip along the Staffs and Worcs from Haywood Junction towards Stafford to Tixal Wide. This is where the canal opens up in to a huge lake, quite unique in canal terms. It would make a nice little excursion off the Trent and Mersey, there would not be any need for a winding hole to turn back the wide provides plenty of turning space and really good moorings are available on the towpath side. Years ago I used to cruise from Haywood fruit farm to Tixal have a BBQ on the towpath and return to base easily within a day - Oh, happy days! Incidentally, the river under Essex Bridge is the 'River Trent' next to the scenic 'River Sow' junction, it then flows around the Shugborough estate under the Staffs and Worcs canal then on towards Stafford. Please keep the uploads flowing and assuring some of us feline fanatics that the cats are well and happy. Take care xx Jayne Anne. Thanks for the glimpse of an old family favourite destination at weekends (back some 40 years ago). We used to drive there from Wolverhampton when I was a lad.
I have worked on track where the railway passes through the estate, it was set in a cutting so not to spoil the views and the tunnel portal is very ornate.
It is a glorious place to visit, and unlike some, well worth the admission fee. I drove there about 3 years ago, spent the whole day there in the bright sunshine of late spring. Passed it this year on mu way down to the Ashby canal, moored up for 2 days, where it proceded to permanently precipitate, so I gave it a miss. Deffo go there again, looks from your "hedge" visit a few things have changed, delightful, lovely vlog ladies.
What a beautiful place for a day out. It looked so peaceful and relaxing. And the mooring spot looked lovely and verdant. Great vid as always girls. You both look lovely and golden. Sunkissed I think is the word.
Great memories of Shugborough, the original estate brewery still exists in the outbuildings. I spent the day there with a group of members from Wolverhampton CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) when we made our own brew for our annual beer festival under the guidance of the head brewer from Titanic Brewery in Burslem who uses the brewery to make the estates own Shugborough Ale which is on sale in the shop. On other occasions, I was part of the crew looking after a steam traction engine "The Leader" which we took there as an exhibit at the annual weekend craft fair. A long way away now though in Whangaparaoa New Zealand, can,t get a decent pint for love nor money.
Fantastic girls - brought back so many memories of taking Mum there. (we were NT members for many years) There's a train of buggies that go from the carpark to the courtyard as it's a bit of a walk. (Not seen that bridge before though).

Just discovered the two of you this last week. Just discovered narrowboats and the canal system this last week. I'm in love! Wondering if you know any Americans cruising? Any specific difficulties for expats, etc? Yep I'm across the pond, but recently retired and would love to live on the canals.
Yes, I know of people that have to head home every 6 months- that' fine if you have somewhere to stay, and you would have to moor your boat up somewhere.

It is an area on the canal where you can turn your boat around. Bearing in mind some boats are long 55+ foot long, it is a triangle /semi circle shaped bit cut out of a bank so you can steer your bow in and turn the back end around. hope that helps x

I’ve got several watercolours waiting to be painted upon request - so I don’t always have time - but I think this would have been lovely.

There is the River Trent. We were on the Trent and Mersey canal. The Staffordshire and Worcestershire canal starts (or ends) at the junction.

It’s a space that is cut out in the canal so you can turn a boat around. Traditionally the turning was done by the wind. Hence ‘winding’ hole
