  • From the Smithsonian traveling exhibition American Letterpress: The Art of Hatch Show Print, this video shows you the art of letterpress printing as practiced by a 125-year-old Nashville, TN, print shop. Learn why only a handful of letterpress shops still exist in American and why this one is so influential in the music and entertainment industry. A great look at the craft.

Hello! I am a museum curator from Nottingham, England and have been working on a project for the last 15 months researching the local history of printing. We have several 19th century platen & lithographic printers and I am researching their operation and how the different parts relate to each other. This video was a great help! Thank you so much!!

My dad was a linotype operator, so I got my first taste of letterpress about 50 years ago. It never ceases to amaze and hypnotize.

We just visited over Memorial Day. The staff was friendly, the shop was amazing, and I scored three bargain bin prints that I absolutely love. Even my two young boys loved seeing how posters were made "in the olden days." After spending so much time designing on the computer, it makes me happy to see people still crafting beautiful artwork with their hands. Brilliant.

This is wonderful. My father was an avid letterpress printer. He had several presses over the years but his favorite in the later years was the Vandercook 4. Coincidentally he was from the same area. I can never remember if it was Goff or Salina.
    Many thanks for the video.

Ive watched this video a half dozen times and it still fascinates me. The use of wood type as it was back in the 1800’s still being of use today to produce masterpieces of posters to grace any wall. Keep it up! - from a former, fellow letterpress lothareo.

    Hi,
I want to thank you for just the most amazing and interesting video I have seen for a long time. I was never a Printer letterpress or otherwise, but I was a "Print Finisher/Book Maker.
I am not old enough for retirement but was forced to stop work when my Epilepsy became too much of a risk.
Not ashamed to say I cried watching this. Letter-Press is exactly the same as when it was invented. Johannes Gutenberg 'Press', applied the Ink and the 'Type' was 'Set' in the same way. Thanks

Very cool. I was just given one of these poster's by Mike Plume of the Mike Plume Band.. He had 100 for his new record, he autographed it for me and told about the process. I wanna check this out when I'm in Nashville this coming March.

My first job out of a vocational high school in '76 was an all letterpress shop. Since then I've been lucky enough to have worked in offset shops over the course of almost 40 years that had one or two old Miehles still in service. It's almost a lost art. Great video.

Is the lettering in the composing stick the right way up to help the UA-cam viewer, as traditionally the letters in a composing stick were upside down and read from left to right, love the clip, took me back to 1976 to 1980...
