Cramming the BIGGEST Celestion into a Marshall DSL40C - The result may surprise you...

- In this video we put a 15" Celestion Fullback into a 12" Marshall DSL40C Combo. To be able to do that the baffle is sawed up to fit the bigger speaker. I'm using a Gibson Les Paul 1959 Reissue and a Gibson SG Standard (with a GFS P90 in the neck). With the LP I push the amp with a treble booster (K&B Range II) on many of the riffs. The tone and dynamics completely blew me away. Don't miss this one. Cheers
Hi guys. It happens to be my amp which I put a Fullback into this Saturday. It was no "rocket science" at all, but some tinkering of course. If anyone is interested in details of that work you are welcome to ask.
I find the Fullback to be by far the best sounding replacement speaker I have tested in the DSL40C so far.
The ones I tried were Celestion Greenback reissue 25W 16 Ohms, Celestion Creamback 65W 16 Ohms, Eminence "The Wizard" 8 Ohms, Eminence "The Governor 8 Ohms".
Cheers,
Magnus
Thanks for letting me demo your amp man! Cheers
It almost looks like the baffle would break in two with the top and bottom coming so close! But it sounds KILLER! Great job! Cheers P[>
@@JohanSegeborn what mic did you use?
@@patrickfoster4586 ThX! Yeas it looked kind of scary at first, but at the grill cloth side of the baffle there are extra MDF beams running along the edges to make space for the cloth I guess. They reinforced it well enough to feel safe when handeling the baffle when stapeling the cloth back after sawing and repainting ( the cuts only to not be visible through cloth I thought.. ). As soon as you bolt the speaker it stiffens the baffle of course, and when baffle is screwed to cabinet it gets very sturdy and safe.
Cheers
@@JohanSegeborn A pure pleasure, Johan!
Sounds great. Would have been cool to hear an A/B comparison with a stock DSL40, to hear the difference that 15 makes. Can't tell in isolation. Maybe a future video idea ??
Simons and my video of the DSL40 is recorded with a very similar setup so it’s basically comparable
Hi Byron. Since I am born a "manic experimenter" I am already into making a "15-to-12" adapter baffle, so I can continue swapping speakers as often and effortlessly as I want. As soon as that is finished, It would be possible for Johan to run a true "A-to-B" comparison of the Fullback vs whatever 12 inch speaker in my DSL40C. You could possibly push him in that direction, if he needs to be...., I am not sure!
@@JohanSegebornHi! If you think of the one where you compare a DSL40CR vs an Origin Combo, the DSL40CR actually has another stock speaker, "V-Type", instead of the Seventy 80 in the DSL40C ( mine, stock ). Also, the DSL40CR is slightly revoiced..
Cheers,
Magnus
Last week I did the swap with my DSL40C. I built an entirely new front panel in order to not mess with the original. I mostly prefer the sound of the Fullback even tho it has the rougher 15" sound. Note that when cranked an bass all the way down the speaker still starts to smell after some time.
It does sound really big and certainly sounds like a Greenback. More like a bunch of greenbacks!
I'm gonna be honest, I love this channel, but the conclusion is every marshal sounds great cranked all the way up
Why do you love the channel then?
@@JohanSegeborn Probably 'cause it sounds so GOOOOOOOOOOD.
Even CODE series? 😆
ua-cam.com/video/D0XPwOr3hxk/v-deo.html
@@JohanSegeborn He loves the channel because, 'cranked is the way to go'!
This is my favourite tone i've heard on your channel Johan. It's fantastic.
Great to hear that!
What I love is the harmonics and that 15” let’s you hear every note of a chord without being sloppy. That SG has some Pete Townsend tone in it! Great stuff! I remember back in the 70’s/80’s nobody wanted a guitar combo with a 15” as they were perceived as slow and mushy sounding. Not so! Cheers Johan for another great post!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Glad to hear it, Cheers!
I have a Fullback in a 15" cab and use it with my Fender Princeton 65 and its unbelievable the amount detail in the lows. The low are not just low any more, but layers to enjoy. Also worth trying out if you have the chance. Cheers! Love this channel.
I have been wanting to see an AlNiCo version of this. Who's with me?
Which speaker - JBL D130?
I’ve tired Alnico blues Weber alnicos and ceramic are for me - punchier crisper
@@averyadrian1534 I use a JBL K130 in a custom cabinet with my DSL20HR and it is pretty amazing for dynamics and clean tone. A K130 in the DSL40 combo would be cool.
How many of you guys are there..? I don't think we've seen CEO Johan before...
Sounds great with the Fullback, great mod!
Love this kind of mad scientist vids. Always original ideas and what a huge sound for a combo!
I really like the riffs starting at 4:40, johan. BTW I just installed four fullbacks into a homemade birch cabinet. Unreal.
WOW! I wouldn't have thought a 15 could fit in there, it sounds incredible. Might have to do this to mine someday. Thanks for another great video Johan!
Very nice demo. Great playing showing the dynamics. All around entertaining.
Sweet riffs and groove today Johan. That speaker really sounds great in that amp!
You weren’t lying about it being a killer. Amazing sound!!!!!
I've always said, the 15" was always THE superior speaker, (regardless of brand really). It just covers a better RANGE of frequencies, and lets the guitar's body ring thru much better! Better articulation, less mushiness once warm! Pushes more air than a 12, does justice especially for a small amp!
That SG I am guessing had the GFS MEAN90 in the neck? It sounded killer! GF don't call PAF sized single coils P90s. They are the cooler Dream90 or the hotter Mean90. I have the Mean90 in the neck of my 335! A ROCKING pick up! Fat, mellow but thin/bright at the same time!
Rock on! \m/
Yeah the GFS is impressive! Rock on!
You are sooooo right....! It is indeed a GFS Mean90. Through a tube amp turned up loud on clean channel, and with a sprinkle of room reverb, It sounds just heavenly in the neck of a SG. Could just sit all day long and enjoy the chime and fantastic dynamics simple chords bring.
Best regards,
Magnus
@@vespass225 \m/
Those riffs are fire as always. Keep up the good work! That sounds killer
Picked up a used 40c this evening, also ordered a 15" Fullback, Thanks for being point man on this mod, looking forward to the epic tones.
Update: The mod required enlarging the cab speaker opening, it requires effort and tools, the Fullback definitely sounds better, I highly recommend this upgrade.
Hello, it was good the mod? thanks.
@@silvanorocha3 Yes it is a good upgrade, better sound through the entire range.
I can sound counter intuitive, but sometimes you can actually get away with mounting a larger speaker without enlarging the speaker opening. I once installed a 12" speaker
in a Marshall 10" combo, on top of an 10" opening. That sounded much fuller and better.
Wow. Perfect all around but the bottom end is incredible. Smooth, pronounced and not too overwhelming.
You guys just sold a few Fullbacks for Celestion. Good lord what a sound!!!
Thanks man, I’m glad you liked it!
I'm going shopping right now. So glad i didn't sell my amp. I couldn't even get a lousy $300 offer from anybody for it. That was surprising.
Ya man. Id like to here some sabbath type cords through that set up. It definitely has a growling grinding sound in it. It sounds great.
@@richfiryn Hi again, Rich. Nice to hear that you got inspired. I think The DSL40C became a very competent and versatile thing with the Fullback swap, and a true beast when cranked. Have fun!
Cheers,
Magnus
I’m wondering what this would sound like with a Deluxe Reverb
amp came out nice, very dynamic and wide open sound, great demo
It sounds great with the 15”. I also wonder about a comparison with some other speaker configurations.
Especially the 80s rock/metal sounds good with the 15
Brighter than expected
fantastic Johan!...you are my "go - to" for speakers!...i've loaded a fullback into a 1x15 combo that i built (tube rectified 50 watt jcm 800)
)...killer tone...love the sound of your les paul...keep 'em coming dude !
What a friggin great sound ....that 159 chord thing on the sg was Awesome tone and character I'm definitely getting one
Johann, this is a mighty sound.
Really wanna know if this would be possible with an Origin 50c 🧐
Thanks Johan for sharing this. Sounds amazing!
Thanks Paul!
always awesome tones from you Johan
Johan, you said that your favourite speaker for an open-back 1x12 was the G12H. Does the Fullback 15" beat it??
In a near future, these DSL combos will be known for having different speakers each... and that will be awesome.
Johan, I've noticed that you have a very controlled finesse to your pick attack that brings out full dynamic range of the amp tone... sounds very nice!
The *MARSHALL GIBSON LES PAUL* instrument comes alive when you dig in , yank, and cajole the strings on the fret board...even when playing a ballad, gently.😊
Well done and thanks for sharing brother! I didn't think it could fit to tell the truth. Using a jubilee cab with mine, great results!
Be Well Johan!
Thanks brother!
That Fullback sounds like a full stack.
It does indeed. Big sounding speakers
@@JohanSegeborn Hey John, how this speaker can handle metal music? I'm thinking about the Fullback or the Eminence Legend 1518? although the Legend 1518 has more DB rating than the fullback
@@sfear6 I'm using this speaker, I would say it's not for metal for it responses slower and also lacks of very top frequencies. But if you have a BBE sonic maximizer stomp, you can get good heavy tones for it responses quicker, and it will be more versatile of course.
Man John I just got one of these yesterday for three hundred bucks with brand new vintage 30 upgrade, it's like you're psychic
Sounds amazing Johan! Thank you.
Thanks Bernie, glad you like it!
Just the Rock timbres/tones @ JS,..especially, today, the LP inspire me to write Rock sing type lyrics,..it is like a time machine travel affect impact, producing a retro context...pop/rock culture, back into time.
Johan..your vid on the carr mercury v set me on the path to purchasing one.the carr coupled with my 15" fullback gives me the best tone I've ever had. I run everything through my klon...abundant definition and tight bottom end..
The stock Seventy 80 with its brittle high mids is really the weak point of this great amp.
Just upgraded mine to a WGS ET65 and couldn't be more pleased with the result.
Absolutely! I changed the speaker to a Celestion Creamback M65. Great!
Was thinking about what extension cab 1x12 or 2x12 would sound good with the DSL 40C..
I put a Celestion Classic Lead 80 in mine, great amp!
Some may cringe. I had a peavey Sheffield speaker in mine. I think it was a "Sheffield 1200". Something like that. Same speaker I seem to remember seeing in alot of the peavey bandit amps from the 80's. I though it sounded killer.
The Seventy 80 is not the best Celestion speaker for sure, but it is not such a terrible speaker as many claim. Surely sounds bad in some amplifiers, but it has good qualities.
By the way I own a Fullback loaded 2x15...great speakers!
@@frankscassi4960 Exactly, the Seventy 80 isn't as bad as its reputation. But since it sounds a bit brittle it doesn't pair too well with amps like the DSL.
Johan Sageborn - I was on a 15" hunt over the last year or so and have seen your other vids. I know your affinity for the EVM12L which I also love. So I got a EVM15L and LOVE it just as much. You should try it if not already? I've also heard/played the Warehouse 15" which sounded great but didn't have the Fullback to make a comparison. Cheers mate!
full and detailed with enough highs this is how a 15" should be made it is tighter than a 12".
Killer tone! There’s absolutely something to be said about 15” speakers. Cool modification - and needless to say, flawless riffin’ as usual 😅🤘
great video Johan. what were the the amp settings? something to consider!
Who was the moderator, in the full length trousers, at the start of this video? : )
Dr Jekyll, and then Mr Hide with the guitar playing full volume
Johan, have you tried the Redback? The clips I've heard sounds great, kind of like a G12H30 55 but tighter in the low end.
Havent tried but I heard it in a comparison with vintage Greenbacks, and it did great
@@JohanSegeborn Can you demo one on the chanel?
That SG ! What a great tone!
Fantastic to finally see my Marshall combo on this, the favourite chanel of them all.
What settings have you got dialled in while playing the Les Paul, alongside running the treble booster of course?
Thanks!!
Thanks, I’m really glad to hear that! I used the clean channel on both crunch and clean, volume, gain and mid dimed. Bass 2, treble 4, presc 6, resonance 5-7
Were you playing at full volume during anytime of the demo?
Seems like a really cool mod. I'm crazy about D130's
cheers
Hey Johan, since you are the expert on vintage Marshalls and gear, it could be fun to see you recording to Reel to Reel tape or even 4-track cassetes. The tones we hear from the old days had that tape signature to them
It was so awesome Johan wore trousers for the intro.
man, that speaker sounds massive in that combo!!!
Thanks man
Very Hiwatt Who sounding. Excellent feel and tone. Would never belief that was from this little amp.
Sg from the opening note sounded wonderfull. Of course, guitarist have been using bass amps for many many years! Nice sound, sorry i missed the live, work is like that!
fantastic! I really gotta make myself a 15 cab for that speaker!
Thanks Guiulio! Glad you liked it!
Can it do high gain stuff at all? Even with a tube screamer in front of it? I only heard low to mid gain in the video. Sounds great for that!
WOW, GREAT SOUND!!!
I just love the Fullback, as you know, Johan!
@Magnus Wickström, wonderfully crazy idea! I got a Fullback in a Marshall JTM60, it sounds fantastic!
Thanks man, well it’s you who got me into the fullbacks! Cheers
Nice! Of course I couldn't be the first with such an idea. Any pictures or videos of it , Bengan ?
@@vespass225 Oh, I didn't have to modify mine. The JTM60 comes in all shapes and sizes; 1x12, 2x12, 3x10 and 1x15. I have the 1x15 and just had to swap the Eminence LE 15 to a Fullback. The amp went from Good to Fantastic! :-)
Johan has a clip on my JTM60 somewhere, as well as a clip comparing my Fullback to other 15".
Rock on!
@@bluesbenganblues Ahaa..! I didn't know! Anyway, you seem to have discovered the greatness of the current Fullback and got Johan to see that as well, and he in turn inspired me so I got excited to try to squeeze it into my DSL40C. I am glad I did. I am a little curious how it would sound in a well designed 1*15 separate cab, have you tried that ? Or maybe even a 4*15 ?
@@vespass225 I haven't tried that but from what I hear in my amp I'm sure it would sound just wonderful! The Fullback has an incredibly full sound! Go for it!
Sounds killer! God bless and rock on 🎸👍
Thanks J, Rock on! 🤘
I have Radar cab pedal by Mooer and some of the IR's I like the best in it seems to be from 8" 10" and 15" speakers. Im seriously thinking of doing this as well in one of my cabinets.
Since I bought a fullback im always using it along side with the g12h cabs on every head I play with... What an awesome speaker ... And wait till its well broken ;)
The Fullback stands head and shoulders above the rest of the current Celestions. And I have owned a DSL50 and tested the DSL40C. And the DSL40C sounded way better than my DSL50 with my 2x12 Bogner cab. Actually this amp alone is a pure bargain, and with the Fullback... This video speaks for itself! Absolute bargain with the Fullback in it! One of Marshalls most underrated amps for sure!
Thanks, I like the DSL line too
@@JohanSegeborn You'd be amazed by what these chinese folks can do. :D There is also a cheap bulgarian brand called Bughera I think, they have some really unique sounding amps very cheap. I don't know how they are able to make money from those prices :S
You mad scientist! Please open your house as a museum
Hey Johan, are those stock pickups in that SG? Or not using as much gain? It sounded a bit flat and not as much bite as I'd expect out of an SG. That celestion sounds pretty good with the LP/Marshall.
Bean counters at Celestion wondering where all these 15” Fullbacks are going.
Did you have any problems with the tubes being so close to the speaker, you know, like tubes rattling or squealing or anything like that. I had a hard enough time squeezing a 12" speaker into my origin 20c and the tubes being so close. I almost want to build a bigger and better cabinet for it. Maybe I will and if I do I think I will have to try a 15" speaker. It just seems like the tubes are too close to the 15 in that dsl. I think you're gonna have problems with tube rattle down the road but maybe you'll get lucky.
Wow Johan nice tone on your L.P and the S G amazing and that says alot..I'm not an S.G.guy. beautiful!!!!!!
You look super cool with the outfit in the intro! I hope you wear the crocs with that outfit...
Hahaha! Thanks my friend
wow, what a difference! I have a JCM 900 100w gain dual reverb...would it be possible with my amp too?
I know it's not your amp, but would it be possible to get it back to do a clean demo? Or is there one floating around in not aware of?
1.Really excellent...I need treble buster . exactly like this one ...thanks
How do think the fullback would sound paired with a DR103? Anything even remotely close to a Fane?
lively ! At the beginning of the video i was a bit nervous that you were announcing that you were on your way to the office...
johan, is there an amp you'd recommend for a lower volume plexi sound? i can play at a decent volume at home but i do live in an apartment...... dsl? marshall studio jcm800 turned up on low input?
I would get an 80s JCM800 combo and a Power brake. Thats what I use at home myself. Often just the master volume is enough too.
I think marshall know what they're doing because johan makes basically any marshall sound fairly similar (great) it just may require various levels of tweaking. For any marshall that sounds too brittle, the speaker swap is one method but what happens when you plug an external cab in? The snswer is run an eq pedal in the fx loop.
Johan, this was a nice experience, thanks! Very well put together and mixed! Sounds fabulous.
You mentioned a buddy who could help me build a TrebleBooster pedal? Could you send me his adress etc?
Best regards,

That SG sound... killer!!
Yeah indeed, the GFS P90 in the neck was impressive
@@JohanSegeborn Definitely. I loved those neck sounds. Is it a GFS Mean 90 or a Dream 90?
@@mishunny just put a mean 90 into my tele neck and its jingly jangly!...excellent...fantastic channel Johan!!!...
Great speaker for recording, but bigger speakers = narrow treble dispersion. A beam blocker or tape on the grill will spread the treble frequencies widely across a room.
Fantastic tones! What pickup is in the bridge of the sg? There is something special in a 15 when you can find space. Hope you are well mate
Thanks man, I think the SG has the stock pickup in the bridge. I only used the GFS P90 neck pickup though. Hope you’re well too!
Microphonic tubes! Yow. Puts the cone inside the tube partway!
Marshall. Always keeping the sweet spot at the top of the lineup (no 40w dsl head). Combos just rattle tubes to death. Especially with 24” speakers.
i'm afraid you are right on this one
Hi Johan, great video as always.
I’ve recently acquired an Eminence Reignmaker, FDM.... really enjoying it in my Mini Jubilee combo.
Maybe one to try out.?
Thanks Duncan, I’ll keep it in mind
What do you get from this speaker that you wouldn't get from say, an EV12L or an Eminence Delta Pro 12?
Man that fullback woke the dsl right up!
One of my setups is a DSL40c connected to a 2x12 (V30) Orange cab.
What's more you can pick these baby's up for around £300 2nd hand on ebay. Some pedals cost more than that!. Bargain of the century if you have a spare cab sitting around! 😁.
Hi Johan, do you think the DSL 40 would sound good through a Marshall 1936 2x12 cab loaded with Greenbacks?
Through a JCM800 or 900 1936 loaded with vintage Greenbacks it would sound amazing. The Greenback reissues isn’t my cup of tea though
Thanks for your reply! That is fantastic! Probably i can get a JCM 900 1936 for quiet a good price. But i guess i have to save up for a looong time to be able to buy some decent vintage greenbacks 🤣
I am gonna scan through your channel (again) and check your greenback videos. Pre Rola i imagine?
Thank you very much, I love your videos !

Thanks Patrick! Cheers
Now you MUST compare this to your half stack!!!
P.s. Is it possible to know the amp settings?
Clean or crunch channel with dimed volume and gain + treble booster on 4. Then all EQ settings sound good. I mostly had max mid, little bass
Now I need to hear a 1962 bluesbreaker reissue with a 15” fullback compared to the original!
It sounds AWESOME! That's a lot of tone from a Marshsll combo! Are you playing gigs with it and if so, how do you like it? Cheers - Luther
Johan....
Have you ever tested the Celestion RUBY'S?
No I’m afraid I haven’t.
Sounds awesome, kinda creamy, whit nice bass response and no hush highs. Kinda like a fender type of EQ.
Huge prominent mids! Thank the lord for 15" speakers lol
Sounds great! 6:22 Also might be a rattly tube in there...
Great big round sound ...real room filler ...and the SG's back ...cool
Thanks Gerry!
I rewire my neck humbuckers to Parallel between the coils Permanently to clean up the mid heavy and treble lacking tones.. Turned out just switching between the 16k bridge and likely closer to 4k neck is REALLY USEFUL I don't use any pedals at all to switch from overdrive to clean now

Yes, there is something special about a 15 inch speaker.... it's too big to sound good with a 6-string electric guitar and too small to sound good for a subwoofer.
@@normanclature9819 The world's plenty big for varying opinions.
