Back in 1983 I was at the Marietta, Georgia Bluegrass I first met Randy Howard. While walking around the parking lot listening to different groups and carrying my fiddle case around, Randy approached me and introduced himself. He asked me how long I had been playing and asked me to play something. I think it was Arkansas Traveler that played go him. He said it sounded great and was very complimentary. He too had his fiddle and I asked him to play something. He played the wild fiddlers rag. As he played my mouth dropped as I thought that was the best fiddle playing I had ever heard. Even though he had a very nice sounding fiddle he played a couple of tunes on my instrument and he liked it so much he wanted to buy it but no thanks I wasn’t interested in selling it. To this day I think If Randy every time I play it. I recall Seeing him ca few times after that a different festivals and he always made a special effort to say hello to me. I was a year younger than him and he was much better if a musician than myself. He was so nice and down to earth and I will never forget that.
I know everybody makes comments like this. However, I would consider myself a conisuer of fiddle music. My father was a fiddle player. Randy was the very best I have ever seen. I saw him do things on a fiddle that I have never seen another fiddler do. What a shame he didn't get to share his gift a little longer.
I got to play one gig with him, back in 1998, less than a year before he died. Imagine what you hear in this video--but improvised, and with no rehearsal. He was THAT good.
Randy was not only a great musician, he was also a wonderful person and would give you the shirt off his back. He was the kind friend you could call if you were broke down at 3 am. I miss him.
His popularity has long since been in Canada. I so appreciate this video! This has become our households favourite waltz. Even folks who are not fond of folk music love this tune. Thank you Randy Howard...
How appropriate that Randy's last cd was titled I Rest My Case. He has got to be one of the top 10 bluegrass fiddlers of all time. What a talent....such a great loss.
Thank you so much for posting this video! I've been watching this on repeat for almost a year now. This song always make me so happy, and he plays it so beautifully. I just started taking fiddle lessons in October, and this song is always an inspiration to keep going. Thanks again!
We met Randy in Athens Alabama, my son was a young fiddle player, after the show Randy and my son jammed for hours, Randy took up so much time teaching my son. We sure miss him.
My son, Daniel Carwile, competed with Randy on several occasions. What competitors. They both won the Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention fiddle king championship a combined 15 times! Hasn't happened again in 56 years! RIP RANDY!
Not the Countrysinger that got shot and killed by the bounty hunter .. a great violinist who lost a 4 year battle with cancer and died at only 38 in 1999 .. Randy was raised in Georgia and in his life managed to win pretty much every fiddle competition there is (including some multiple times). His mastery on many different types of stringed instruments has been well documented among the session musician fraternity, and by the time he was done he had played with George Jones, Garth Brooks, Steve Wariner, Faith Hill, Rhonda Vincent and Ricky Skaggs.
I remember being at a competition and shooting the breeze' with Randy.. Asked him..What you gonna play..He said.. ah..I'll just make something up..He did..and beat us ..all.. Pure genius.. Get his 'I rest my case' album.. phenomenal musician and humble guy..We lost way to soon.. RIP Randy
Robert Shaffer really loved this man, and according to him this was his hero. When I heard these two play together the hair stood up on my arms and tears came down my face. What a team
Incredible! It doesn't get any better than this. Thanks for posting! Randy Howard was the best I have ever heard. Very few even come close to playing as well as he did. He wrote other great waltzes, as well as this one.
At the very least, Randy is/was one of the best fiddle players to ever walk this earth, saw him at his fairwell performance in Dublin, GA, and he was still incredible despite being so very ill. LOVE his clean, clear and exact playing, a fantastic waltz.
I listen to Randy several times a week, this waltz & his style of playing it is like a magnet to me. I Love it , RIP Randy. I also love Kenny Blairs Roxanna Waltz & Chubby Wise playing A Maidens Prayer. Jay Ungar & Molly Mason playing Ashokan Farewell is riveting. Great musician to listen to.
Great tune...wonderfully played by Randy. Thanks a million for posting it. From the right hand and playing style, it looks like Dennis Crouch on the bass.
Probably is Dennis Crouch. I played in Randy's living room jam session with my Dad Tommy Harrelson on guitar, me on alto sax, Randy on fiddle and Dennis Crouch on Bass Fiddle. It was sunday night April 11, 1999. Randy's Mom was also present and another Bluegrass couple from Kentucky or Virginia. Randy died less than three months after that night.
I heard him play live at the Athens, Alabama bluegrass festival in October of each year. He played so beautifully that it was hard to believe it was real. He was studio-perfect every time! So sorry I can't hear him play again.
+Don Discher That's me on guitar and Dennis Crouch on bass. Randy was very sick at the time and still played like the master he was. Not a day goes by that I don't think of him.
MY CUZ..........BRO FROM ANOTHER MAMA LOL HE AND MY MOTHER WERE EXTREMELY CLOSE! HE WAS THE CLOSEST THING TO A SIBLING I WILL EVER HAVE! LOVE U MUCH AND MISS U MUCH , MUCH MORE RANDY DALE HOWARD! P.S. HE DID MAKE A FIDDLE FOR ME TO USE WHEN I WAS YOUNGER AND IT CAN GO TO MY GRAVE! LOVE MY BUDDY!
Great rendition of a beautiful waltz. The sound brings to mind this would have been something Chubby Wise would have enjoyed hearing you play. Thanks for taking the time to put this on UA-cam.
