- N.B. prerequisite viewing: • The Aleph Patch Explained
5 years ago I created a patch that I called The Krell vimeo.com/4846...
It was developed on a Buchla system and its name paid homage to Bebe and Louis
Barron and their pioneering electronic music from the film Forbidden Planet.
For the past many months I’ve be working of a similar yet different patch I call
The Aleph after the short story of the same name by visionary and imaginative writer, Jorges Luis Borges. web.mit.edu/allanmc/www/borgesaleph.pdf
“an Aleph is one of the points in space that contains all other points.”
This patch was developed using a constellation of eurorack modules. Hopefully this description and walk-through of building the patch will be a catalyst for others to develop, enjoy and explore!
My thanks to fellow travelers along the way who have encouraged, prodded and given me feedback: Bruno Liberda, Daniel Cramer, James Cigler, Gerald Good, Darrin Wiener, Bruce Bayard, Adam Scramstad, Charles Seeholzer, Michael Vannice, Robert Coburn, Federico Placidi, Colin Spiby, Michael Maag and Matrixsynth to name a few… Thank you!
Sweet! Once it’s up and running it’s a non-stop gurgling, chunky, sound machine!
what a wonderful universe you detected! never forget your face, when you setup the patch on my system to prepare the workshop: a little boy, beaming with joy, as he is about to discover his birthday gifts!
Bruno Liberda thanks so much for sharing that moment and for your reciprocal enthusiasm!
awesome !
wow thanks a lot for the very thorough explanation, and for the really awesome sounding patch! (btw I was having a look at your stuff, I'm a big shakuhachi fan myself! :) ) Keep it up, and thanks for sharing!
Thanks minijack! And thanks for checking out my shakuhachi stuff too :-)
Great stuff, thanks for sharing and explaining
nimmenn it's a joy to do! Glad it is of use and hopefully a catalyst for your explorations :-)
As I'm building R*S serge based rack, got some ideas by looking at your rack. Benjolin I have seems to be very quiet on main output, so will need some amplifying VCA to lift the levels up, keep up the interesting stuff you do, and definitely provide us some great patch ideas on your spare time :)
Will do! :-) What are you considering as "main output" on the Benjolin, there are so many...?
Main out after VCF, I think on my unit its limited to 2Volts, similar thing is on TwinPeak filter I have....
You probably just created a planet
could you please recommend a manual explaining what the various inputs, outputs and pots do on the DUSG? I'd like to replicate your patch with a befaco rampage
Brilliant! I noticed the DUSG has two rise/fall knobs on each side.. how does that module work in comparison to a Maths or a 281? I've always been fascinated by Serge synths.. their functionality and unique sound but have also been confused a bit since I've never had the opportunity to play one. (Maybe if RS makes these more readily available I'll pick some up).. anyway that you for your guidance and showing us this and for being such a great guy and clearly and ambassador to the modular world
Gerald Good III one knob is offset and the other an attenuator of incoming CV. Thanks for your kind words and for trying out the patch!!!
Todd Barton aha! I thought it could have been an attenuator on incoming CV. Thanks again!
Thanks for the patch todd, I might have the right module s for it. Been looking forward to this. Take care. Colin
This is great! Thanks for sharing. R*S DUSG|Maths|Rampage all have slightly different feature sets. I got my Rampage to get where you say "There we go". Need a second attenuverter to get independent control of rise/fall CV. Seems important. Will a run of mill S+H do or is the Wogglebug a better choice?
Norman Kelm Wogglebug or the Doepfer A149 QRV/SRV or any clockable random voltage will do.. SH with white noise would work in sure as well
Just a friendly observation: you might want to start the video with an audio example of the patch before fading to the broken down system. As a first time viewer, I'm left to either skim ahead or just walk away due to uncertainty as to what an "aleph" patch even is. Skimming ahead is naturally what I'm choosing at this fork in the proverbial road, but even here I might find an suboptimal portion upon which to lay my judgements.
Anarchosyn good point. I had assumed folks had been following the progress and had already seen this earlier post

Clearly a false assumption
