Let me tell you something about Maaco... My old man was an operations manager for Maaco from 78 til 82 at corporate headquarters in King Of Prussia Pa. And opened most of the Maaco shops in the NE USA. We owned shop in Philly for years after that and one thing he always taught franchise owners and even our own crew is that no matter how much a customer spends on the paint service (Ambassador, Congressional, Presidential, and Supreme), ALWAYS GIVE THE CAR A SUPREME. Because, we were painting 30-35 cars a week and standardizing the paint line process saved time, even though we were doing more to the car, we could do it much faster... Plus no matter what, customers liked to tell others about where they got it done... No one ever knew we did that and every customer went away with the best we could do... #OldYorkRdAndTiogaMaaco
Painting a car is more difficult than you think. Drips and runs are a nightmare. Bugs and dust, water condensation in the airline will ruin your perfect run. Etc.
As someone who's restored their car and painted it themselves. PLEASE DONT Just take it to macco PLEASE , unless u have a entire paint booth at home you won't get a great paint job
The_Doctors_Tardis I refinish hardwood floors for a living & agree 100% that prep work is much more important then the paint or finish. Coat crap with finish, you still get coated crap.
TheWarcraftIII he'll never get a quality pearl paint job at a place like Maaco or any Econo type paint shop. It takes a skilled painter to spray pearl and those places often use inexperienced or just down right bad painters. I wouldn't trust them to shoot any metallic color either but that's just me.
I highly suggest using a white paint. Not only does it help with keeping a vehicle cool in the hot summer months but it also does a very good job of hiding any imperfections you might have missed as well as the everyday dirt and dust you would get with a family drive vehicle. If you would like proof of this fact try going up to your local FedEx delivery truck next time and take a closer look at his truck and you will find more dust dirt and debris than you could imagine... and yes I'm speaking from experience.
Just try to do it yourself!!! Just need to have a nice compressor to handle the continuous flow. You evenly spray without back & forth actions, but uniform movements all the way across. You're a very good dyi'er if you ask me. You have the room, and even the shade to do it too. Keep it in the shade for at least a week after you do it for better results. You can give it maybe 3 passes/same with the clear. With intervals of up to 30 mins in between. This works best for me. The paint supplies would be around 100 bucks for the good paint/clear coat. You should experiment on smaller panels or even wood panels as practice. I usually primer the hood a bit more(there's primers for that too) to have heat resistance on the paint ;) I think you can do well Sam. Even remove the trim before paint for a much better inside out look. I've seen what you can do, and do believe you have it in you to tackle this! Cheers
with good weather in fl I would do it yourself it is not hard if you have a place to do it that you can keep the bugs from flying into the wet paint and for the money you pay someone elsebuying a HVLP turbine system is a good investment
desiv 1 but there’s absolutely no reason to ever hit it with 80 grit unless he was planning to take the whole damned thing to bare sheetmetal, which would have been pointless in this instance.
Wiggy He did say that he was removing it from the roof. There’s nothing wrong starting with 80 grit so long as it’s stepped down gradually (80,150,220,320,400, and 600 if the paint calls for it) and there’s no sand scratches left. BTW: I’m ASE certified in bodywork and did it for years.
Go with the same color. Color changes on the cheap don't work out well. Nobody wants to see different colored door jambs or under hood/trunk color differences. My local Maaco is awesome. Their spot painting service using base/clear usually matches very well. Even without a cut/buff many people would not realize the parts were repainted on the cheap. Full paint service, they do a decent job for what you pay. Had a Chevy Tahoe done 6 months ago. It was a Nasty old City of Chicago police car, had uneven edges on the paint. Dents, dings. and one of the rockers was quite rusty. For $900 they prepped it, filled all the dings, did some body work, sealed, and painted it using Urathane paint and "integrated" clearcoat. I got compliments consistently on how good it looked. The guy I sold it to didn't even know it had a respray. Any other shop would have been $5000+
Yeah but the whole point I'm looking for a paint job is a different color. The problem is the color I want for my car that comes from the factory is a rare color and its very hard to find
Still needs a good cut and buff to get rid of the orange peel and you need to do good prep work for dark colors. Also taping off everything yourself is needed, but remember you get what you pay for. Also some Maaco’s have better workers than other franchises.
A co worker has had three vehicles painted at our local Maaco and paid around $1,500 each ( two trucks and a suv) and they sanded it down to the metal and resprayed the entire vehicle along with a 4 year warranty.
What about Earl Schieb? Got one in late 80s. When I complained of overspray on wheels, windshield, paint runs and other Small Details, said what do you expect for $99.95?
Some maaco don’t wash ur car either. Barely mask and just spray over dirt no prep. That’s what u pay that’s what u get. I wondered how ur gonna make a profit when u spray 60 dollar single stage product with prep work. That’s about 12 hours. What is everyone working for a dollar an hour
Overspray can be corrected with a white microfiber cloth and thinner just a slight hint on a rag then buff at a low speed with compound. Overspray on wheels can be corrected with thinner as well. Seeing all wheels are now aluminium thinner wont damage an aluminium surface but for chrome scaring occurs with thinner.
Considering how much space you have there, and how cheap it is to set up the initial paint needs for a cheap paint booth, i would probably throw caution in to the wind and paint the car myself.
but if you never painted a car that is different story, you will and up with bunch of runs and big orange peels witch wold add you bunch of work and time, not considering material cost.
My dad always took each panel off for full body resprays. Doors. Fenders. Bumper covers but back then they didn't really have them. Trunk. Hood. Lights too. Those panels were painted separately off body.
Sam your content has been skyrocketing. It consistently gets better with each video and you have become one of my favorite UA-camrs. Keep up the great work 🤘🏼
I've had really good paint jobs from Maaco. The cheap single stage paint (no clearcoat) is pretty good and can even be buffed out pretty nice. Of course the $1500 base/clear is much nicer if you can afford that. The equivalent base/clear at a private body shop would be maybe $3000. Body work is always extra as it should be.
I have used Econo for years now.. I prep my own cars, and remove as much trim as possible. I have always been happy with the results, and have never had a car that looked like it was cheaply painted. The few times I have had flaws in the paint work, they have always fixed the issues.
I bought a '97 Jaguar XJ6 a year ago for $2250. It's in pretty good shape but needs paint because of fading and peeling clearcoat. It's basically British Racing Green but the official color is Sherwood Green. I'm going to shop around and try to find a good deal. There is a Maaco not too far away that has good reviews but there's also some smaller shops around.
I agree that the results from franchise shops can be all over the map. I had a Fiat 124 painted at One-Day paint and body. It was a nice 8 foot paint job and stayed that way for 5 years or so.
Hey Sam, back about two years ago, Ford came out with the most beautiful blue you'd ever want to see, they used it on the Taurus and the 500, it was deep midnight blue but metallic, when it hit the sunlight, it was the bomb. I think it would look great on your Jag, check it out and if you're ever on the space coast, come check us out in Titusville.
I can't even paint a car myself for 400 dollars including the supplies, etc. I have painted about 10 cars in enamel the last 25 years and shops were trying to sell me the two stage urethanes. My enamel jobs always turned out acceptable, but needed polishing. Last year I went for the two stage urethane and the paint is much easier to spray and the clear turns out awesome.
Macos not the only one, a local auto body guy who has been around for ever painted my friends Toyota pick up white for a cable tv job. Truck had been red before. Paint job lasted less than 2 years with white comming off in sheets. Truck eventually returned to red which coencided with his departure from CTV sub contracting Lol! Perfect!
lol...ok 1 wait a couple years after the sun bakes the clear right off.2 rubber parts need to have a flex agent added to the paint or it will start cracking all over..maaco dont do flex on the rubber parts.. the base is always enamel at maaco. the clear coat if you pay the extra for the clear is the only urethane part .....we are a 4 generation auto body family.. if you want to clean up a junk car to sell it to an easy mark(not nice but ok) maaco is a way to go quick cheap easy....in even a few months you will start to see what is called pull back or shrinking and every sanding scratch will start to show the paint will not hold up to the sun so in a year or 2 you will start to see what is called checking and blistering in 3 or 4 years the clear if you got it will be peeling back off...if you do not get the clear the sun will kill that paint dull as heck in 2 years this will not really buff or rub back off when you do buff it the paint will soak up the rubbing compound and turn milky white a few weeks later and it just gets worse and worse as time passes on....sorry but that is the truth... god help you if you let them do any body work at all... good prep work will help a bit but only so much.
lol wait till the bmw guy attempts to clean in inside and not just the seats the more he looks the more he will see it is on the bash and even on the inside of the windows it will never come all the way gone and the work it will take just to sort of hide it will be worth more than he paid for the whole job....i feel very sorry for him...

@@perfectfan2006 I'm going to take a wild guess: Is it a trick question? You use activator with clear and some paint systems use a reducer. Matrix does not recommend using reducer with clear. But on 50% humidity would normal activator be a good choice?
I got a Macco for my old truck. With occasional maintenance my paint never had the clear bake off. Might be because I dont live in a sunny area but it was a great deal.
Dude you're working on a budget it's okay. you're trying to teach people that there is an option if you don't have the money to go for an expensive paint job that you can prep it thank you for being a realist. I appreciate that you keep it real even for those that don't have crazy money to make things happen.
You can paint half a bumper. It's called "burning." It's difficult to learn, but takes practice. When I painted, I got really good at it. You couldn't even tell it had been done. It only lasted about 2 years though. Only draw back. It would fade and you could see where it was "burned in"
I do mobile bumper repairs on high end cars in San Diego all the time. I do blends that are long lasting and undetectable. 20 years in business with not one customer complaining of premature paint failure. All 5 star reviews (with no suggestion to review l, ever) on Yelp for the many years I have been with them. Never spent a dime with Yelp, BTW
Got my car done for $500 about 10 yrs ago from an alley way paint shop. My hood started fading within a month. Took it back, and they redid the whole car. Thank GOD I keep all my receipts! I'm in AZ and the sun just destroys paint. But they must've put extra clear coat because it still looks new.
The original comment was illustrating a point based on an image displayed in the video, not on the fucking thumbnail. Take your god damn head out of your ass and understand "Oh shit, maybe I was wrong". Hard headed defensive fuck.
I read an article once that said if you use a budget paint place you can do the prep . Plus you can remove all the lights , tape the glass and chrome and have it towed to the paint shop,
If you're gunna do a bright blue that's an official make's color at least stick with a British make for a British car. Lotus's A52 "Mediterranean Blue" is one that I can think of off the top of my head.
A couple days ago I got a quote for their best option for $2250 but they gave it to me for $800 since their computer system was down and they didn't have any cars lined up that week.
No way “doing the prep your self” voids the warranty. They have to be full of crap. For one they don’t do any prep any ways and second I would’ve just told them I didn’t do any prep, that’s just how the car is.
I worked at a maaco for 1 week. Thats all i could take. They painted on average 20 cars a day at this franchise. I was almost comatose by the end of the week. The majority of the cars coming thru had really bad paint jobs and body work on them already. I suspect its these owners that badmouth maaco. They bring in a terd and maaco just polishes the turd. This is a nasty dirty work with low pay so don't expect top quality. I've had 2 of my own cars painted at 2 different maaco's and the paint held up really well. I chose catalyzed acrylic enamel which was 1 step up from their lowest quality they had at the time.
My dad got a Volkswagen Sheibed. I am a smart ass, so before he left it at Sheib I put a match stick in the rain channel below the roof. They painted the match stick white.
I had a car that the previous owner had taken to Earl scheib to be painted. About 10' away it looked good. You get close and you could see 80 grit scratches through the silver basecoat😂 on the drivers side rear quarter panel Ans passenger door. It was silver which shows everything. Also one day I went to wash my car as it was dirty and there was a spot on the front bumper that no matter how I scrubbed the dirt didn't disappear, I looked closer and realised that the dirt was under the clearcoat😂😂😂
swirls aren't visible near to the extent of black paint, scratches hide much better and are practically invisible. Silver is so much easier to keep clean and maintain compared to black paint. Not even a comparison
Drew well sand something rough and spray silver over it then clear coat it. This scratches will show big as hell I'm not talking about the. Clear coat I'm talking about the basecoat. Anything under a silver base will be amplified
In 1996 I had a 1968 Ford bronco ( before they were the rage ) and I prepped and took mine to Macco for a OEM factory color respray. This was in Bellevue , Wa .... and the guys there were so enthused about painting it, they did an AWESOME job. For 350 bucks in 1996.... I spent a lot of time sanding the tops of the fenders ... I totally agree....
My friend crashed into my Civic hatch with his mustang a few years ago, didn’t go thru insurance or anything so replaced some panels and took it to Maaco. $400 cash out the door for me a full respray of the same color white. And I was very happy with it for the first few days...until I popped my hood, and noticed the entire engine bay/engine/turbo kit/ everything under the hood was painted white. My entire custom turbo kit was now even more custom becuase the turbo/bov,piping,valve cover, everything was custom white.

Thanks God you do not have maaco there, that is crap u you get what u pay for... And they also hire lot of undocumented immigrants so they can keep there prices cheap... not the best place to bring a car that u care for

I don't know if it's still available, but Chrysler used to have a color called Formal Black. I had the tank and side covers of my bike done with it and it is gorgeous. It's a deep black with kind of bronze and silver metal flake. I would have body shop guys come out and admire it when I parked. It's probably too late for this car, but keep it in mind for next time.
Took an Old Honda in for a MAACO paint job because every other place was charging more than what the car was worth. What i got was dirt under the paint, glass and rubber pieces scratched/scuffed, they didn't clean the clear coat overspray from my windows off, and my badges are now being held by two side tape instead of glue.

Plus no matter what, customers liked to tell others about where they got it done... No one ever knew we did that and every customer went away with the best we could do...

If you’re doing prep and body work why not just spray it yourself. The prep is the hard part.
Jonathan R maaco is probably doing it for free for plug nvm he said he didnt go to maaco
Jonathan R exactly!
Why? Because some of us don't have a paint booth. A good compressor and a good gun along with the skill to lay down paint.
Zook Inthe6ix painting a car is most definitely not illegal
Painting a car is more difficult than you think. Drips and runs are a nightmare. Bugs and dust, water condensation in the airline will ruin your perfect run. Etc.
As someone who's restored their car and painted it themselves.
PLEASE DONT
Just take it to macco PLEASE , unless u have a entire paint booth at home you won't get a great paint job
Should keep the color close to the original (as much as possible given the budget). I think that adds to the sleeper-ness of the car....
Prep work is 90% of paint work.
More like 60-70%
Zeke I agree with 60-70%. Quality paint is at least 40%.
The_Doctors_Tardis I agree painting is all about prep if you can't prep you can't paint
The_Doctors_Tardis I refinish hardwood floors for a living & agree 100% that prep work is much more important then the paint or finish. Coat crap with finish, you still get coated crap.
I'm a prepper, and it IS 90% of the work..-shit prep work equals shit paintwork.
I worked at MAACO and I was YELLED AT FOR DOING A GOOD JOB!!! (Scotch bright scratches is what they do for prep....)
Thank you for at least trying to do good work

IceRex I know right?
I want it to look like it's not stock color. So how about Pearl white?
I mean like that really super white!
Or mabye Metallic bronze :P
Metallic grey.
Pearls are usually 3 part paint jobs, some colors are 4 or 5 steps.
I personally think a metallic purple would look amazing on this.
I have "snowflake white pearl" on my mazda and it looks great! It's very white unlike other whites which look yellowish
ive seen it in white and is hideous
Where can you buy good paint?
Shopline a good ppg alternative holds up to intense u.v. Dont cheep out on clear tho if you plan on having the car longer than 5 years
You don’t even need a nice compressor. Just one large enough to fart out enough air to make some passes with an HVLP gun.
I'd really like to know where to buy paint for $100. Here in Ohio, prices are over $300/gallon and that' not including hardener and reducer.
Prepping the car with 80grit calls for " Flat Gunmetal Grey"
Hoimar von Ditfuth- Siefken id imagine theres a ton of shrinkage and sand marks showing in the end product
To be fair, he didn't say he ONLY used 80-grit. He could have hit it with 80 to start, and then moved to a higher grit to smooth it out...
desiv 1 but there’s absolutely no reason to ever hit it with 80 grit unless he was planning to take the whole damned thing to bare sheetmetal, which would have been pointless in this instance.
There was clear coat peeling so yes 80grit was the currect grit to start with. But not finish with
It's amazing how many people have become professional bodyman and painters by just watching videos here lol!!
I remember Macao use to have a $99.00 special.
Ranjit roller special 😂😂
I bet they even colour coded the windows and lights for free!
Once it was $20
I remember Earl Scheib was $19.95
Eggshell gloss, job done
Any other shop would have been $5000+
Good point!
How long did they warranty the 3 year job for? Also, did you use the same color on that job too?
@@SmartWentCrazy No clue on warranty time. Truck was painted the same color it originally was.
@@mph5896 Is that mainly for the door handles and stuff that get missed? I wonder if you can ask them to get those spots with a different color?
Yeah but the whole point I'm looking for a paint job is a different color. The problem is the color I want for my car that comes from the factory is a rare color and its very hard to find
3:11 Who ever did the polishing of the door and fender needs to quit his job.
This looks horrible with all the swirls.
Those holograms were probably introduced with a rotary
As vince McMahon would say
"YOU'RRRRRRRRRRE FIIIIIIIREDDDDDDDDDD"
How does that happen? How do you get it out?
Still needs a good cut and buff to get rid of the orange peel and you need to do good prep work for dark colors. Also taping off everything yourself is needed, but remember you get what you pay for. Also some Maaco’s have better workers than other franchises.
LMAO! I like how you called Rob out at the end. I'm subscribed to both of you guys so its fun when you are poking a little fun at each other.
A co worker has had three vehicles painted at our local Maaco and paid around $1,500 each ( two trucks and a suv) and they sanded it down to the metal and resprayed the entire vehicle along with a 4 year warranty.
What about Earl Schieb? Got one in late 80s. When I complained of overspray on wheels, windshield, paint runs and other Small Details, said what do you expect for $99.95?
crimp creep - i worked w a guy that had his car painted by Earl Scheib. They actually painted over the bird crap on the roof....
99.95? I remember when it was 29.95. LOL
That's why Earl Schieb is gone. The few that still use that name were allowed after Earl Schieb closed. There is a video on UA-cam on this.
Considering how much space you have there, and how cheap it is to set up the initial paint needs for a cheap paint booth, i would probably throw caution in to the wind and paint the car myself.
aserta ive seen guys buy harbor freight guns paint them selves. Win trophies at shows and get a ton of compliments.
I agree
but if you never painted a car that is different story, you will and up with bunch of runs and big orange peels witch wold add you bunch of work and time, not considering material cost.
Ahh dont worry about orange peel, just call it a textured finish lol
SalvageMasterV orange peel seems to also be a theme at Maaco. I have seen a lot of Maaco paint jobs with what I consider too much orange peel.
My dad always took each panel off for full body resprays. Doors. Fenders. Bumper covers but back then they didn't really have them. Trunk. Hood. Lights too. Those panels were painted separately off body.

I think you should paint it red. Hope it is not too late. Only a year and 3 months
Man I wish I would've known about Maaco before I started patching my paint job
I have used Econo for years now.. I prep my own cars, and remove as much trim as possible. I have always been happy with the results, and have never had a car that looked like it was cheaply painted. The few times I have had flaws in the paint work, they have always fixed the issues.
Wow, the shade on Rob at the end. Funny!
i had a maaco done years ago and they did good. was very happy
I bought a '97 Jaguar XJ6 a year ago for $2250. It's in pretty good shape but needs paint because of fading and peeling clearcoat. It's basically British Racing Green but the official color is Sherwood Green. I'm going to shop around and try to find a good deal. There is a Maaco not too far away that has good reviews but there's also some smaller shops around.
man, the amount of buffer trails/holograms in that fiesta paint though...
I agree that the results from franchise shops can be all over the map. I had a Fiat 124 painted at One-Day paint and body. It was a nice 8 foot paint job and stayed that way for 5 years or so.
The main thing is the orange peel but wet sand, compound, then sealing with a buffer can make it much better
Pearl white. The jag would look awesome

The paint Maaco uses on the cheap paint jobs chaulks out after about a year in the sun.
Enamel is hard to spray. Acrylic Lacquer is easier.
I recall a late 60s Jaguar in South America with a deep dark burgundy color.
Imperial Maroon, I think. And yeah that'd look pretty awesome.

Dude you're working on a budget it's okay. you're trying to teach people that there is an option if you don't have the money to go for an expensive paint job that you can prep it thank you for being a realist. I appreciate that you keep it real even for those that don't have crazy money to make things happen.
You can paint half a bumper. It's called "burning." It's difficult to learn, but takes practice. When I painted, I got really good at it. You couldn't even tell it had been done.
It only lasted about 2 years though. Only draw back. It would fade and you could see where it was "burned in"
Done this many times and you are absolutely right about it taking time to do right.
It's called blending. If done right, it wont be detected and it will last long time.

It is crap, but I have heard it from several people who have gotten Maaco that it does void the warranty.
Prep work is 3/4 of the job. If its not prepped properly it won't stick
I think the bright, grabber blue kind of color thats on the new Jaguars.
Your channel is by far one of the best on youtube. No BS and very helpful content.
Anyone know of a similar priced paintjob company in the UK? $400 for anything more than a bumper repaint seems crazy cheap no matter how low quality

I remember Earl Scheib from back in the day!
silver doesn't show anything lol try black
Drew silver and black are both the worst. With silver the metal flakes find depressions in the sub surface and amplify them.
swirls aren't visible near to the extent of black paint, scratches hide much better and are practically invisible.
I totally agree....
Um I'm going to do a review of Burger King but end up going to Wendy's, makes sense right?
hahaha fucking brilliant
storm gray with a bit of dark metallic flake would suit this car and make it look a bit more modern
80 grit? I can already imagine what it is going to look like in the end.
