The latter is the place for Maori beliefs. Forcing the integration of Maori spirituality into science subjects is wrong headed and does a disservice to all those involved.

I have worked for the Ministry of Education, they are so ideologically captured, it's not just an incorporation of maori historical narratives, they are in fact rewriting those as well to paint maori in best possible light, glossing over our own intertribal conflicts.

I also agree with Professor Rata; the Education Department is too ideological. For example, it makes no sense to include Māori mythology and beliefs about spirituality into science, the origins of science represented a rejection of metaphysical explanations of natural phenomena, I also do not enjoy Māori rituals held at school which exclude the use of English. I would find them more meaningful and inclusive if there were explanations in English.
