I hand pollinate pumpkins too. I actually don't bother with brushes or q-tips anymore, I simply pull the petals off the male flowers and apply it directly to the female flowers. The only flowers I use a brush for now are things like passionfruit where all flowers produce fruit, so I take pollen from the flowers and pollinate all of them.
Hi CaliKim my kids call you the “garden lady” 😂. I’m always watching your videos. I started gardening thanks to you back in February and this will be my first fall gardening. I just hope is better than my spring and summer😂😂😂
Another excellent video. Sometimes I forget to do certain things in my garden with my plants because it can get overwhelming. Thank you for refreshing my memory with these short videos. 😊
Fingers crossed on my sugar babies…. It took a while for our PNW weather to get hot so my plants are just starting to vine and get flowers.. fall planting already??
CaliKim, is my Go-To for precise gardening How-To tips. Whenever, I talk to friends who are beginning their gardening, I always direct them to CaliKim videos. She has always been an inspiration for me. Plus, I can relate because I live in Southern California, too. CaliKim and Camera-Guy, Rocks!
I’ve been living vicariously through your videos while I travel for the summer, can’t wait to get home to my garden in a couple weeks! I have a friend caring for it while I’m away, so many of my veggies came from your seeds 😊
I harvested two sugar babies today ate one and it was a hoot thinking I had grown it myself /grin what a dork I am....enjoy your company thx for sharing what you know love and blessings
In early summer I had to hand pollinate many of my squash plants due to lack of bees and it really increased my harvest. Thank you always for the helpful tips and inspiration.
We definitely have less bees in the summer here. They are rather active every other time of the year so helpful to jump in to help pollinate when not so many 💕
Ok Kim! Your garden is gorgeous! Here in Midwest everything dying from drought. The horrific storm last week killed my only flourishing plants my climbing cukes. Thanks so much for reaching us snout watermelons. They are sooo yummy!
I've been hand pollinating my squash but didn't think to use this method with watermelon! Will be trying this out for sure to get more baby watermelon growing! Thank you for all the helpful tips, your videos have been so helpful as a new gardener! 🌻
I really appreciated the instructions in hand pollinating. I have attempted to hand pollinate squash so it is reassuring to see the process. Fingers crossed the hand pollinating works for my squash!
I have had such horrible luck with my watermelon this year with this crazy hot Arizona summer I absolutely love your watermelon set up in a smart pots pot. I am definitely going to give this a try next try. Thank you for the tips. I have learned just about everything I know about gardening from you since around 2014. 🍉
Got my first box last month and it's so much fun! I already transplanted the squash and endamame. - greatly anticipating this month's box so I can get started with the Fall garden!
Great lesson on hand pollinating. I've been doing that with my zucchini and it works! I didn't know that repeating the process would assure results so I will do that next time. Thank you for all of your gardening tips!😍
I may be hand pollinating my sugar babies since I was late getting them planted….hopefully I will harvest before frost 🤞🤞… Thank you for the informative videos and inspiration you give! Also, thanks to smart pots for giving their products and encouraging people that you don’t need land or wide spaces to grow!!!
I appreciate all you tips. I was able to hand pollinate my sugar baby watermelon. I can't wait to start working on my fall garden. I made a list to keep on track with what type of veges I want to plant and what I need to prepare. I am so excited for fall. From HOT FL.
I will be trying this method on my sugar babies. And next year add a cage for them to climb. Great step by step instructions in your videos! Keep them coming 😊
Thank you always for the helpful tips and inspiration. I had to hand pollinate many of my squash plants this year, due to lack of bees. Now we have lots of sunflowers coming up and getting much more bees. But hand pollinating always helps!
Great video, and perfect timing. I'm a newbie at all of this, so all of it is exciting to me. Knew nothing about self-pollinating and learned much today. Thanks.
I have a sugar baby growing in my garden I am so excited 😊did learn about hand pollination which will hep me with most of my plants to grow more fruits
You and I your videos are the inspiration behind me wanting to grow sugarbabies and to encourage others I know to do the same. I love content about attainable gardens! Much love and respect from Dallas, Texas again. (My Califormia hubby living in Texas now appreciates my lessons learned also., I think 🤔 😅😂).
Thank you for such informative videos-you’re a great teacher to those of us who are new to gardening. I’m looking forward to the fall garden. Can’t wait. In addition to all the fall veggies, you inspired me to start more flower seeds! 🌸🌼🌱🥒🍅
Last Sunday I was also trying to help pollinate our sugar baby water melon for the 1st time. It worked for the crook neck squash! Until now my garden was lacking in pollinators.
I have several melons growing this year. We’ll see if they produce anything. I will be working on trellises for next year. My melons and pumpkins are sprawling all over my front yard. 😊
I haven’t ever tried to grow watermelon but my brother is growing cantaloupe and they are doing great! That makes me want to try to grow both watermelon and cantaloupe next year.
Our watermelon didn’t do well this year despite the good rain we’ve had. I hop next year will be better, now knowing this I believe it will be successful! ❤❤❤ thank you for sharing!!!!
I started SugarBaby watermelon in a 20 gal Smart Pot from seed ~3 weeks ago. We are on vacation this week. I hope there are blossoms to hand pollinate when we get back!
Very interesting information on hand pollination. I may have to try growing watermelon next year. Happy watermelon growing! Those will be tasty when they are ready to eat.
Very informative how to. I struggle with watermelon every year but I don't give up. This year I finally have fruit fingers crossed it ripens before my 1st frost.❤
Question: Other than fertilizing and hand pollinating, what is your routine to ensure healthy and sweet watermelon? For example, do you try to limit the number of melons per vine? Do you stop watering a week before harvesting? I’ve got my sugar babies growing in smart pots too and not sure what to do. Thank you for your helpful tips!! I’m looking forward to the harvest from your late summer seeds!
Omg watermelons are one of the things that have continued to elude me! I just can’t seem to grow them successfully. But I will def keep trying. Giveaway is amazing… fingers crossed!
You make everything seem so simple. I have 2 watermelons on my plant. 1 is growing fine and the other (which was pecked a bit by birds early on) doesn't seem to be getting bigger. Not sure why as it still looks fine, but I guess I better get out there and see if I can pollinate a few more...
Thank you for another great tip demo! I appreciate that you showed each type of flower - male/female. I plan to try this with my Sugar Baby watermelon (from seeds I got from CaliKim❤)!
Great information. I have some watermelons growing in grow bags with a few small mellons.I didn't realize I couls hand pollinate for higher yield. Thank you.
Love your videos they're so vibrant and informative. Had planned to grow some watermelons this past month, unfortunately my automated watering system failed me for 2 weeks and my plants have shriveled up. Hoping to be able to nurse them back up to be able to flower again. ❤🙏
Thanks for the seeds you sent me in Las Vegas, I’m using them for summer part 2 as I call it! I have until at least November for first frost 😂 Hope I win the giveaway, that would be amazing! Keep up the great work, Kim 😊

I’m so glad you did this video. I was wrongly assuming that if there was a tiny watermelon that the flower had been pollinated! You’re the best!
