The reason why splitting a leather makes the suede less fluffy is because the fibers of the leather get tighter and more compact the closer they are to the grain.
As far as I know, fluff is the result of two things: how dense the fibers are naturally, and how much dead air is in the leather itself.
Fiber density varies by the type of animal and the location on the skin.
Compared to smaller animals like calf, goat, and sheep, cowhide is not very dense. This is why cowhide tends to have a large grain when it is milled. The loosest parts of a skin are the belly and leg sections. The closer you get to the grain, the tighter the fibers get. The farther you go, the looser they get.
The amount of dead air in the leather is usually from the manufacturing process. Soft chrome tanned leather has a lot of dead air inside. This makes it good for garments and anything where you want a very flexible, soft, or plush feeling leather. It is also good for clothes because the dead air inside insulates your body heat better, like wool. Soft vegetable tanned leather has less dead air inside. This makes the fibers tighter and better for burnishing, stitching, and skiving with a knife. It also makes the flesh side less willing to fray over time because all the fibers are stuck together.

Hey man, I just want to thank you for being an inspiration for my work. Im not up to Horween just yet ( I keep buying tools), we all get ideas from each other, no matter what anyone says, and youve given me a TON. Thank you from New Orleans.

I'm not a maker (yet), but have been seeing quite a few makers making pieces out of Minerva Box which has a slightly bumpy, or pebbled, texture instead of Minerva Smooth which has, as the name suggests, a more smooth and flat texture. I like the look of it, especially for something like a watch strap or journal cover.
I received my Vertical Rift I ordered from you and have been using it for a couple weeks now. Shipping took quite a long time, around a month, to make it to the USA but it was well worth it. The quality is fantastic and I've really enjoyed it so far. Was able to transition from keeping my wallet in my backside pocket to a front pocket as well. The quality of the build is fantastic and it smells and looks beautiful. Thanks for the excellent craftsmanship and I hope to order more from you soon!

Dang you're getting a good deal on leather. I pay the equivalent of 100 euro for only 0.65 of a square meter for pueblo leather in the USA

@2:24 Does that mean the finish just rubs off or is it a temporary thing? Just asking because I like that original look to it and I think its what makes the leather unique looking. If it just rubs off then it would just basically be a normal smooth veg leather ya?

Hello! Don't you think that buttero is too prone to scratches? I am looking for an analogue that will be more resistant to scratches.

Hello, I just bought some Pueblo leather to make some wallets and I have been surprised to see that it has quite a bit of dye rub off when rubbing with a white cloth. Tobacco and Olive rub off a bit but Red rubs off significantly more.
    Is it normal?
Is there a way to reduce the effect without ruining the scratchy Pueblo look?
