Sandford was shot through the head and died five hours later. Goebel was tried for murder on April 16th and acquitted on the grounds of self-defense. Sandford's widow filed an unsuccessful civil suit against Goebel and subsequently went insane. During the bitter 1899 Kentucky gubernatorial race, Republican candidate William S. Taylor made political capital of the Sandford killing denouncing his opponent Goebel as an "assassin." Taylor won by a narrow margin, but the results were contested and overturned on appeal. Goebel himself would be assassinated in Frankfort in January 1900, four days after unseating Taylor as governor.

I grew up in John Sandford's house. My mother always said it was haunted. After Sandford's death on 11th of April 1895. Sandford's body laid in the vestibule for 2 weeks while the grave was being dug at Highland Cemetary in Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky. The house is still plum square. It also has Sandford's coat of arms in stained glass on the landing to the upstairs. It is nice to be a SAR of Kentucky. (Son of the American Revolution).

The Goebel event has always been fascinating. The trial of Caleb Powers makes it even more complex!
