    In this video, I’m talking about the impact of the recent fires in Southern California-specifically the Line, Bridge, and Airport fires. These fires caused major closures across key hiking areas, with some trails expected to remain off-limits until 2025 and beyond. I go over what’s been shut down, using custom maps I created by layering the Forest Service’s PDF closure maps onto a CalTopo map. I also provide some alternative hikes that are still accessible if you're looking for options while these popular spots are out of reach.
    One of the big closures is around San Gorgonio and Big Bear Lake due to the Line Fire. Although the area is closed until the end of November, the southern parts of San Bernardino National Forest, like Mt. San Jacinto, remain open. Then there’s the Bridge Fire, which hit areas near Mount Baldy and Wrightwood, and those closures are even more extensive, lasting until December 2025. I point out some other nearby hikes, like Crystal Lake and Mount Wilson, which can be solid alternatives while waiting for the closures to lift.
    The Airport Fire, though smaller, also caused some significant closures in Cleveland National Forest. This area will be shut down for about a year. I’ve linked all the maps and information below the video for those who want to see exactly what's off-limits. It’s tough to see so much damage to areas we love, and recovery will be slow-some of these places might not fully recover in our lifetime. But I’ve put together some suggestions to keep you hiking in the meantime. Stay safe, and hopefully, we can avoid more fires in the future.

      I'm close to Santa Monica Mountains, so did the Split Rock, Tri-Peaks, Sandstone Peak loop the other day. Got stung by bees, but had good hiking conditions otherwise. Trail to Balanced Rock looked a bit overgrown but saw lots of hikers there. Probably I'll go to Topanga today here in a few hours.

    Man, I was at the Ski Hut a week before the fire. The guy that runs the Ski Hut overnight hosting asked if I was gonna go to the top, and I was like, 'Nahh, not today, I'll come back in a few weeks as it's getting late.' Thought I was only a few miles from the top; now I'm 2 years from the top. I did see someone post on All Trails that they illegally hiked it and saw maybe 1/2 a dozen other illegal hikers on Baldy that day.

      @@markmcla Actually after doing O'Melveny Park's Grotto Trail so many times, with it's 4 or 5 super steep climbs, walking up to the ski hut with 12-15lbs in my pack wasn't hard. It just felt like a normal, leisurely hike. I know there's a steep section after you walk past the Baldy Bowl, but I'd say a person that hikes a few day per week should be able to do it. Plus I have more red blood cells than the average person, so I don't get altitude sickness. Take care!

      Marion Trail to Jacinto is closed late fall to late spring. You can still hike it you just gotta park in the road and walk to the trail head or take the longer trails again from the side of the road. But not advisable unless you know your way around in the snow.

    That's bad news indeed... It's more of a commitment, but the southern sierras might be the best alternative for the next month. Mt Langley is very nice. Also, the south loop at Mt Charleston near Las Vegas is open. -And like you said, Mt Wilson is a good local option in the winter. But this is sure disappointing... Mt Baldy is my go-to hike when I want a quick hike that feels like a mini vacation. At least the Ski Hut Trail didn't burn.

    FWIW most likely these closures will be adjusted as containment improves and damaged roads / infrastructure are repaired. The Vista Fire Closure Order originally had the entire Baldy Basin closed through 30 September but they ended up reopening it within a few weeks of containment. It's a lot easier to impose a broad, sweeping order and roll it back than the other way around.
    Areas that actually burned will be closed for much longer which makes sense.
    If you feel the closures are excessive and inappropriate the best resource you have is your state and federal elected representatives; it's an election year so they might even respond!

    Every year the Forest Service goes more totalitarian. I live in Tustin. I mostly only really do 2 hikes - Modjeska Canyon and Black Star - Half hour drive or so. And they are closing the entire Northern Half of the Santa Anas - FOR OVER A YEAR?????.....the fire was MILES from there!!!!!

    • @catb4918
      @catb4918 23 години тому

      I completely agree! I am beyond livid about all of this. Just when things were reopening & regrowth was happening another STUPID HUMAN-caused fire happens burning everything & closing everything AGAIN!!! Of course they say 'one year' but every year they have a 'review' & keep the forest closed another year. & another year. & it turns into 5 years, i.e. the Holy Fire. Then they keep it closed because they need to do 'maintenance' because everything got overgrown because no one was allowed in. I've been hiking & running in these mountains for my health & wellbeing for 15 yrs. I moved to Modjeska in 2015 to be near everything. I am on these hills & trails ALL. THE. TIME. For more than half the time I've lived here I have been denied access to some large section of Forest or another due to STUPID HUMAN ACTIVITY. It's not our fault if the Forest isn't being managed properly to prevent these catastrophic events from happening. How many destructive fires have happened on your watch Darrell Vance??? & areas that were not burned should be open!...

      Not that I want to defend their actions, but maybe it's just a knee-jerk reaction to allow them to evaluate things. Also probably because there was alot of emergency vehicle traffic on all the trails so they didn't want the hordes & masses to interfere with their response to the various areas where the fire was active...

If I'm interpreting Watch Duty correctly, the Ski Hut Trail and Devil's Backbone Trail areas did not get burned. Thank you for posting this and for all of the work you did on this. My review of the closure map posted online was that Blackstar Canyon road/trail was not closed; however, the work you did here shows that it is within the closure area. I went by the trailhead yesterday and it appeared to have a relatively normal amount of people parked near the gate (which is a lot). I also saw online that people were on the trails according to Strava. There was a sign at the top of dump hill stating "all forest trails closed" but there were no closure signs at the Blackstar trailhead nor any rangers / law enforcement posted. I do understand why they would close Maple/Harding/Indian Truck Trail, etc. as those all lead to the Peak, which was burned. I imagine those areas will unfortunately be closed for some time. But I don't understand why it would be necessary to close Blackstar, Coal or Skyline. It would make sense to have a sign posted at the gate at the top of Blackstar stating that Main Divide was closed, but not the trails leading up to main divide that were miles from the fire. Hopefully the heat this week will not cause the Airport fire to surge like the Line Fire did yesterday. Perhaps that was part of the reason.
    It has been difficult seeing the 3 fires burning, knowing how much is being lost. But I recalled the time I rode my bike through Santiago Canyon after the fire that swept through there a few years ago. It was devastating and looked like something out of a war movie. But driving through Santiago Canyon yesterday, it was as pleasant as ever and hard to find evidence of the fire that devastated it not long ago. Hopefully the same will be true of the burn areas.

    New local volunteer SAR member here, with friends/connections at OCFA, USFS, and on neighboring SAR teams in San Bernardino County. I've seen people post about illegally hiking areas that are closed to the public. PLEASE do not do this (or condone others doing it). One of my best friends is on a fire crew that was deployed to the Airport Fire. Members of the SAR team I'm on were directly involved with evacuation efforts there, and then later searches within the burn areas. My friends on a San Bernardino SAR team had to do the same for the Line Fire within THEIR OWN HOMETOWN, as their neighbors were all evacuating. There's a reason these areas are off limits. These fires have put an incomprehensible strain on our state's wildfire resources, and people putting themselves in dangerous situations is the last thing first responders and emergency personnel need right now.

    Is the closure really until the end of 2025? I live in New Mexico, and often during fire recovery there are closures issued that automatically expire after a very long time, but in reality the closure expires much sooner when the minimum of recovery required to reopen is performed and it is rescinded. Hopefully that's the case, and it won't be so bad for you SoCal people.

      I was wondering the same. I sent an email to the ranger a few days ago and no response!
      I am hopeful they will reopen some areas, but the iffy part is that many trails ultimately reach the Main Divide and Santiago/Modjeska Peaks, which burned. Coal Cyn/Blackstar/Skyline seem like the most likely to open within the NW region of the Santa Anas and Sitton Peak/Tenaja/Santa Rosa Plateau seem like the most likely to open in the SE region.

    Thanks for the info...now my 2 cents. The closures are way too aggressive. Time for us to vote for "Free to Roam" in public lands of the USA. What business does the Forest Service have on cutting into our civil liberties? A better stance for the FS to take would be "you're free to enter...but at your own risk. You're responsible for your own safety." I value freedom.

    • @mls01981
      @mls01981 День тому

      I see it slightly differently. Our public lands have been damaged and our tax dollars are being used to make it accessible again. Our upcoming rains are going to wreak havoc on the trails affected by fire, with inevitable mudslides and trail damage. I want the trails open as much as you do, but some remediation will be needed before we can access the areas.
      I agree the closures are too aggressive, but there is a good chance that some additional areas will reopen once the fires are actually extinguished. Currently they are "contained" which still means burning, sadly.
      With regard to your last point, EMS is a public service and there is no way to allow "enter at your own risk" stipulationos to the burn area. The lawyers would love nothing more to sue the County.
