- BUKH DV20 cylinder head overhaul. 1973 model bukh with bosch dynastart for starting and charging . Head refaced, valve seats recut, valves refaced and lapped in, valve guides ok, cleaned out waterways, although not too bad.
I think the original cause of the Bukh DV 20 head gasket failing was due to a major overheat when the thermostat (old type)failed in the closed position which still allows water to bypass to the exhaust so looks as if the Bukh engine is still being cooled. The smell of burning paint was the first I knew of a problem. I shut down and it took over 2 hrs. to cool down enough to be able to touch. I removed the thermostat and restarted to get back to my berth. I then repalced the thermostat.
The Bukh engine ran fine for 2 years. Then 2 months ago I was changing some cooling hoses(will be changing to rubber). When the hose was off I turned the engine over and found gas pressure from the failed gasket was forcing the water out of the open pipework. On removing the rocker cover Ifound traces of emulsified oil on the underside and with no leaks from the water pump, more or less confirmed the head gasket.
This is the second video of the Bukh engine repairs and the fitting of a new head gasket.
Super Hilfe für mich, ich sage: Herzlichen Dank!!!😊😊😊
Ich bin froh, dass es von Hilfe war
I am at the point with my engine of putting the head back on. In your video my gasket does the same as yours, in that the hole is small on the nearest rod and floats above the collar. Did you just tighten down over that or did you have to shave some off the gasket? You see the collar at about 4:13
Enjoyed you're two videos, very instructive, I feel more confident now. Thanks
wow... awesome videos... thanks for that... I have learned a LOT about my DV20 now :D
The head gasket, UK prices was about £100 + £65 for the machining (by a relation of mine) . All the other gaskets were reused with the silicone/copper gasket cement. The engine has done about 15 hours now and the head bolts have been re-torqued and is running fine. Starting is much easier now. Bukh prices not cheap but then thats boating. The packing rings/grooves were not re-cut and does not seem to be a problem as yet, time will tell.

Hi .Yes I did have water in the oil which had emulsified. I found the engine would not turn over because of the water in the cylinder which had caused a hydraulic lock. So being water in the cylinder I removed the head to find the cause.
Other causes can be:-
Water pump leaking into the crankcase via the shaft.
Cylinder liner seals.
Cracked cylinder head.
So your problem may be resolved with the repair of the water pump. Hope this helps
Amo i motori Bukh. Possiedo un B 100 é favoloso.
