EDIT - I've been reliably informed that the Keirin is now just 6 laps, with the Derny pulling off after 3 laps. I must have used an old rulebook and/or footage. This is an extremely hard sport! I had tryouts at Manchester Velodrome when they were recruiting talent. There were some people I could never keep up with, no matter what I tried. I think at that elite level - you either have it or you don't. Be sure to like share & subscribe :)
Track cycling is so much fun to watch but it is so hard to understand! Thanks for clearing it up and making it easier to understand! Much appreciated from Canada 🇨🇦
At 68 I'm getting ready to ride the track again. I haven't been on since my late 20's. This video made it all clear again and pumped up my confidence knowing I have the immediate information not to make a fool of myself. You want to increase your bike handling, leg speed, cardio, plus so much more... ride the track. It will make you a much better road rider.
Very well explained. I liked the concept of riding in a group and the way the 1st rider moves back to conserve energy. Really a great scientific piece of information I learnt . Thank you.
I had no idea on anything related to track cycling other than the fact the track is called a velodrome and the walls slope. So thank you for teaching me basically everything from scratch! Nice to know more, my partner likes indoor cycling and I like learning new stuff. Great video!
I will have lived after building a Nagasawa (proper) and finding a velodrome that'll have me. Thank you for introducing me to another reason why bikes are awesome..
Thanks for the explanation. I was watching the track cycling at the Pan American games and I couldn't figure out why one team won over the other. Thanks to you, now I know.
Very good explanations. I listened to it twice, because I think he forgot to mention two characteristics of the bikes. #1 - no brakes. Because there should never be any obstacles on the track other than riders who have fallen, there is no need for brakes . You probably would not be able to react fast enough to use brakes. #2 - only one gear, and it’s usually a high gear. And, the crank does not coast. If the rear wheel is moving so is the crank.
Many thanks for the fab video. My Grandson is competing in an Omnium at the Manchester velodrome tomorrow. His first track competition. The information has helped me to understand the various events so much better.
I got free tickets to the velodrome at the Pan Am Games and I was so confused even after an entire day watching. By far the most puzzling event is the sprint where 2 guys go slow, not in a straight line, almost stop and then randomly start racing when they feel like it
now that i know some of it...i realize this might as well be one of the most interesting and fun sport above all. I can hardly even think of any other sport with so many interesting variations.
Well this was unexpected! However this is an awesome video as always! This is also probably the best video explaining track cycling because ot explains pretty much all the events and also explains some of the nuances and rules of racing such as the lines.
Ah you know me! Always with unexpected videos. Yes, I think that explaining how the events differ from each other is key to understand what makes Track Cycling such a cool sport to watch. Thanks Danny K!
Ninh Ly Yes, while I emjoy all type of cycling, Track Cycling has always been the one that was the most exciting along with Downhill MTB and BMX Racing. I enjoy the longer events imo. Events such as Team Pursuit, Keirin, Scratch, Elemination and Points races are all fun to watch! I enjoy other shorter events too but I like the business of a packed Velodrome!
In Elimination, or "Devil Takes The Hindmost"... it becomes scratch race once 3 riders remain... maybe there are "House Rules"... Great video! Xoxo Northbrook Velodrome, Chicago, Illinois.
Thank you for that great informative video. Best vid I seen in a few days. Now I know why grandpa leads so many laps and then quits. He is equal to the NASCAR pace car!
Thanks bro! Trust me, it's hard! I don't know if you read my top comment - but track cycling is incredibly difficult to get right, and even more so to be fast. I had tryouts at Manchester velodrome, but I got whooped repeatedly.
Ninh Ly Sounds pretty brutal! 😂 Keep up the good work with your content! I’ve been following your work since I saw your Fencing and Boxing videos (and I now do both). So keep doing what you’re doing.
As mentioned in the video, I couldn't cover every single event so I did the most popular ones. I'm not sure Longest Lap Cycling warrants it's own video, given that I mostly spent under 30 seconds each per event in this video.
In the sprint races, usually 3 laps, the racers do not have dernies, but they only race a slow pace for 2 laps, and when the bell lap happens - 3 laps - they go full speed on their velodrome bikes for the "sprint" to the finish.
Its funny how many ppl (including this video creator) say keirin is the weirdest. Omnium, madison or even sprint is much more confusing. I actually search for this video only to understand those events. Keirin is the simplest form of track cycling, *its flat out racing*
Maybe I missed it, but isn't there another rule associated with the sprinter's line that, once a person enters that lane and starts a sprint to the line, the person cannot come back out. So, while the person behind must come around, the person in the lane can't move up to block. This leads to the drama of many of the races: Does the person that turns on the power in the lane have the gas to stay ahead, or will the leader just tow the second rider close to the line where the follower comes around after essentially being led out by the first rider. Excellent video, by the way!
I believe there is that rule unless he's been overtaken and then they can move back out to try and re-overtake. But whether they have the endurance to do that is a different question entirely. Thanks bro.
Team pursuit, Madison and elimination sounds fun. I recently got into biking accidentally because I was out of a car. Just a heads up turn the background down a bit. Informative but the background sound got in the way of it.
Great video Ninh! Are you thinking about making a videos about the other cycling disciplines? BMX, Cyclo-Cross, Mountain Biking, Road Cycling. I love your videos, and since cycling is my favorite sport, I like seeing you make videos about it.
Ninh Ly Well Relays and hurdles as well as blocks and starts might take up a lot more time. At worse a video including with track&field (the sports are so closely connected it would make sense) would make a very good video. I’d get it if you don’t do that though, and today’s video was great (as usual)
Could you do the rules of Stock Car racing. I know you mentioned the rules changing a lot but you could mention that the reason for rule changes is because of new cars and new drivers with different styles of racing. It would be amazing to watch you explain Stock Car Racing
Admittedly I've been debating it - as a lot more people are asking for that. The rules changes regarding segmented races seems radical, and I'm convinced that they're about to scrap it altogether. I'm going to see what happens before committing to a video, the last thing I want is to make a video that's obsolete 6 months later. Just like my videos on Judo and Taekwondo.
Did they change Madison? I forgot which World Championship UCI i was watching, but you needed to do a Lap before points are counted and 2nd Lapping awards 20 points. Also it was 20 laps per sprint event.
This is pretty much like wallball, the Eton wall-game, American Handball and Gaelic Handball. None of which are sadly popular enough to warrant a video. Gaelic handball maybe, but that's about it.

So if you are in a 7.99 class you try to run 7.99 .if your competitors run 7.99 also , NOW the race is won on the starting line!!! You get a better start, run 7.99 if you can and the jump at the start will make you the winner!!! Of course if you run 7.80 you will lose unless your opponent runs 7.79 😀😀 hope that helps!!
Do you think you could do the different rule sets of dodgeball? I have played one version and seen about five different forms and one of the one ones I didnt play seems like the best form
Also in the rule book. On certain events if you crash, get back on your bike and rejoin the pack wich by than has done a few laps while you were on the ground you'll be considered as being in the same lap as all the other racers.
I don't understand the Individual Sprint, why not simply race as fast as possible since the beginning? Why do they need to let the other to move to the front to then start racing?
I heard about it a year ago when some crazy Russian showed it to me. I'd actually love to participate in that! Medieval MMA is pretty awesome and making a video about it isn't a bad idea. Cheers bro! :)

Yes the events themselves can be confusing and hard to differentiate between one another. Glad this video helps you undersstand the difference! :)
I love velodrome racing
The elimination race is certainly my favorite along with team pursuit and time trail.
I tend to find the longer events quite boring personally. But the pursuit events and the sprints are pretty cool.

I've binge watched 100 videos of a guy explaining the rules of obscure sports I have never watched before. I think you've found a niche.
Well, I think there's only a finite number of videos I could make. But yeah - seems to be what this channel is known for.

+Ninh Ly you should do a video on longest lap cycling. It is one of the weirder track cycling events but it is very fun to watch
As mentioned in the video, I couldn't cover every single event so I did the most popular ones. I'm not sure Longest Lap Cycling warrants it's own video, given that I mostly spent under 30 seconds each per event in this video.

It'd be very similar to this one. I'll make it if there's enough demand.
Useful video, nice job!
these vids r so iconic i have ther knowledge of a sportsman now
Thanks bro. It's all about the learning, and I'm glad I could provide! :)
Team pursuit, Madison and elimination sounds fun. I recently got into biking accidentally because I was out of a car. Just a heads up turn the background down a bit. Informative but the background sound got in the way of it.
I thought the levels were fine personally. But thanks.
Awesome video. I think they have cut the number of events of the omnium so that it is only sprinting events now :(
Yes, that's why I mentioned 4 or 6 - because some people still contest the longer version even though it's no longer official.
Coming here after cluelessly watch olympic tokyo 2020 and woww there is so many types of olympic track😵
Yes absolutely!

Admittedly Ciaran, I wasn't planning on doing more cycling events. But if I get enough demand for it ... sure.
Ninh Ly thanks
Excellent content 👌🏻
A beautiful sport very difficult to catch online. Does someone knows some good streaming channel? Legal 🤣
I think the UCI UA-cam channel streams live races. Other than that, I'm not sure?
looking forward to watching the next Olympics. Whenever they are actually held.
Like it forgot to mention.also you work very hard on this video.and I'm about check out the new video you just made.
Thanks man.
Thank you for the videos
Ah, you're welcome Stephen! I appreciate it!
Can you do the rules of track running and one on field events?
Ummm, if I get enough demand possibly. The running events can all be explained in a minute flat. The field events might take up a bit more time.
Ninh Ly Well Relays and hurdles as well as blocks and starts might take up a lot more time. At worse a video including with track&field (the sports are so closely connected it would make sense) would make a very good video. Ninh Ly That is an EXTREMELY good point. I know I would personally love to see it. But you do what you feel is right for your channel.
I probably will make one at some point ... it's just a case of seeing if they're going to change the format ... again!
Do F1 racing then. The rules are much more stable and less radical
That's already on the list, but it's getting around to it.
Thank you very much. Very much needed

Did you do the motion graphics in this video? The slipstreaming visualization?
Sadly, I can't take credit for that. You can thank the kind folks at Eurosport for that.
Please explain about Indian game kabaddi (a major event in Asian games)
I already did.
I made a video and StarSports filed a copyright claim.
I fought this claim and lost, so now it's permanently gone.
Big loss for sports lovers
It is indeed!
It will be intresting if you make a video on cricket vs baseball(a debating issue)
Nice vid, however the rules of the Keirin changed after the 2016 Rio Olympics. It is now 6 laps, 3 behind the derny and 3 lap sprint.
Just checked ... you're right!
I must have used an old rulebook and/or footage. Thanks bro.
Can you do the rules of pat ball?
I have no idea what that is.
Read the Wikipedia article it explains it very well
This is pretty much like wallball, the Eton wall-game, American Handball and Gaelic Handball. None of which are sadly popular enough to warrant a video. Gaelic handball maybe, but that's about it.
Ninh Ly oh ok
Like for every time he said “the rules are simple”
Probably twice
Great video thanks!
Drag racing would be interesting to me. I need an explanation for how in some classes going too fast is disqualified instead of winning.
Yeah, I'll consider it.
It's pretty simple!!! If you want to run 7.99 seconds, you spend enough $$ for a 7.99 car . Don't build a 7.30 car .if 7.99 gets boring or slow to you, build a 6.99 car.

If I get enough demand, yeah.
When they are done do they go back to fighting the Empire?
In their spare time you mean? Yes, absolutely.
Schön erklärt
Vielen Dank!
I'm pretty sure there's an infinite number of events you can make up. When does it stop?
You could, but those are the main ones.
So sick!!!
Thanks!
Are there no brakes on their bikes?
Can you do normal cycling?
As in road cycling?
One country can win how many medals maximum in track races and how many players need for all races
Also in the rule book. On certain events if you crash, get back on your bike and rejoin the pack wich by than has done a few laps while you were on the ground you'll be considered as being in the same lap as all the other racers.
I've never seen that happen.
That's crit racing.
@@NinhLyUK I've seen it in Madisons for sure, for example 2016 UCI World Championship.
Once I heard Keirin's rules it seemed one of the simplest to understand. "Let's all get to high speed uniformly and then sprint"
Suppose in a 100 lap race. A guy laps the field so he has done 91 laps but the field has done 90. So my question is the remaining laps are 10 or 9?
For him ... 9
Hey Ninh, could you do the rules of F1?
Yeah for sure. I just hope that they don't change the rules as soon as I've made the video ... something which they're prone to doing.
This vid does help clear it up....next we'll need a vid on pole dancing!
Good idea in theory, but then everyone will be attacked by angry feminists
where do i learn about tandem 😥
I don't understand the Individual Sprint, why not simply race as fast as possible since the beginning? Why do they need to let the other to move to the front to then start racing?
You will lose if you sprint since the begining. The enemy just stay behind you. Until you tired because you have to use more energy that the enemy.
But you can try if you have confidence to bike more faster that the enemy even when you stay in front and sprint
You should check out medivel fights(im not kidding its a real thing). Maybe you could make a video about it.
I heard about it a year ago when some crazy Russian showed it to me.
I'd actually love to participate in that! Medieval MMA is pretty awesome and making a video about it isn't a bad idea.
Cheers bro! :)
What about the longest lap ? Please 🙏 explain
There's lots of other events, but I only described the most popular ones.
Is track cycling bike have brakes?
about the kern, 5 and a half is 1375, not 1400m
