I'm working with Kiowa on bending vs. bracing. He's still resistant to bending his neck but little by little he's giving it 2, 4, 6 inches... yeay!

Match horse to rider! To summarize: note attention elsewhere, and drifting. Correct by asking for a change in direction, to refocus horse to rider. Thank you.

I’m still a beginner rider. But all the lesson horses I ride now recognize me and it just tickles me. We’ve got little routines. I’m sure I’m not the only one they do the routines with but I like that they do it with me!

Thank you for highlighting this issue Tim. Seen so many good, top notch horses go sour due to owner ignorance.
Some horses are quicker to take advantage, but even good trained horses get frustrated when getting lots of mixed signals. Cues mean something to them as they should.
Best thing I ever did was get my kids and now grandkids good horses old enough to have a hoof in the grave. They know cues, you just really have to mean it to get a response lol.
They all started out bareback with reins and rope halters in the field like I did. ❤

I love the way you train horses to the level of the owner. I remember one horsebyounwetectraining for a special needs student and you were fidgiting around on the saddle on purpose

I am doing the same with my 4 year old mustang. Of course at that young stage she sometimes is like „oh, what is there?“
But if it happens too often or too intense, then we change directions and circle until she is, „ok, I am listening“.

So is the goal to keep the ears on you?

Why is "ears forward" bad? What is ideal ?

Ears should reflect attention on the rider. So an ear cocking back listening to the rider.

Ear forward means the horses attention is somewhere else - usually wherever those ears are pointing to... It's not listening to the rider, it always happens before spooking, could also be a sign of ignoring the human or just thinking sth else is more interesting/ important than the rider...

I need to add that we mean ears forward with attention on something else.
You can see when Tim rides that the horse‘s attention shifts.
Just ears forward doesn’t need to be corrected.

8 is not "older" for a horse.

It is older for a horse to go to the trainer.

Typically trainers work with ground cues on horses younger than 5, so the horse is “a little older”
