  • Weekend in the Wilderness
Surrounded by forested hills, Duarsini is a tribal village in Purulia district, just close to Bengal-Jharkhand border. A hilly stream, River Satgurung, flows past touching the feet of the village. There is a temple of Goddess Duarsini, on which the place is named after. Within 500 m from the temple, there is Duarsini Eco Tourism Centre for stay, run by West Bengal State Forest Development Authority (WBSFDA). Not too far from home, if you want to spend a quality weekend, in the serenity and loneliness of nature, then Duarsini is perfect for you.
The serpentine hilly road coming from Galudih in Jharkhand and going towards Bandwan in West Bengal, after crossing the border at Asanpani, enters Duarsini. Just 100 m away from the main road, there are the beautiful Cottages of WBSFDA Duarsini Eco Tourism Centre, on the on the slope of the hill and under the shades of forest. While walking on the serpentine road going past the hilly terrain, listening to the chirping of the birds, one can get a feel of suddenly landing somewhere in the hills of North Bengal.
We boarded Jana Shatabdi Exp in early morning from Howrah to reach Ghatsila. From Ghatsila station we booked a Magic Car for Duarsini. On the way, our plan was to visit our all time favourite Burudi Lake. 10 km away from Ghatsila, Burudi is one of the most picturesque lakes in eastern India. The bluish water of the lake in winter, surrounded by lush green forested hills, looked so amazing. From Burudi the serpentine hilly road climbs towards Dharagiri. A 10-15 minutes walk through a lonely mountain valley will take you to the cute Dharagiri Water Fall inside deep forest area. But the place in most part of the year remains very lonely and frequently visited by the elephants.
From Dharagiri our driver took a new road for Duarsini, which doesn't exist on Google map. The road goes on top of the hills, going through dense forests and offers wonderful views of wild nature.
After a wonderful journey we reached Duarsini in the noon. The stay in the WBSFDA cottages was quite thrilling.
