Even though my Focus G is an inexpensive case with associated flaws, I contacted Fractal to say that I had broken the USB3 connector and they sent me a new IO board completely free of charge from Sweden, and amusingly it came in a jiffy bag as if it was from an eBay seller or something.
They done this for me years back with my Define C. Multiple times actually, first time the audio port was buggy, second time they sent me the io board for the define mini c so it was too small, then they sent me a free power button a few mo the later when I accidentally spilled coffee on it. All in all their customer service is great I think
Great video. I do really like my Fractal Torrent, and after my build I didn't see any rpm for my chassis fans, even though they were spinning. With your video I saw that you need to have one plugged into the plug on the right, which I didn't have. After doing that I can now see my fans rpm's! Thanks
Thanks for the update, I have only built pcs with second hand components and information like this is just what I look for when researching the parts, keep up the good work.
Just got mine today and I'm glad I got it before they cut off sales. I'll be curious to know that the issue was, but seeing the board when you pulled it out immediately concerned me. Not too worried about it though... if Fractal haven't sorted it before I do the build, I'll just use a few basic fan hubs in the meantime.
Think you may be right on both points. I certainly do not like the idea of exposed 12v pins sticking up in a place with so much metal. Fractal’s response is the complete opposite to the Gigabyte debacle. Good reporting and fantastic content 👍🏻
First there might be a 12v layer (rather than tracks) that is too close to those holes. You would need to X-ray to confirm. No copper at all within 2x the size of the screw around the holes would guarantee no shorting. Secondly the bottom of those headers are precariously close to the chassis.
Fractal's reaction just made all their offerings feel a little more affordable. Those pins are pretty scary looking. I'm guessing a metal side panel attaches over top? How likely could a careless builder bump up against that row with the panel when putting it on or off? I could see some shocking results brushing up against a few of those pins.
Yea that's my guess. This case has glass panels both sides, but there is a solid-metal version, and now you mention it, yea I'd be really worried about putting on a metal side panel while the PC's turned on - something I do fairly often.
How many cases have you had through your door that have had loose screws rattling around inside, if one screw falls on those open pins, you're probably going to be in trouble.
In most cases this issue triggers the short circuit protection in the Power supply, immediately turning the computer off without permanent damage (the PSU may need to rest a few minutes for the protection circuit to cool down). But this can also lead to issues that are harder to detect. Due to this, we strongly recommend, even if you have not experienced issues at all with your Torrent Fan Hubs

Screw holes are super close to the header legs of ground on one and 12v on another my guess is some washer head screws got into a few and caused a direct short and trips ocp.
I think that's exactly their plan here. They've got a lot of momentum with the Torrent right now, it's everyone's darling, and if there really is a significant problem with the hub, that could plow the whole bandwagon into a tree.
I think your first point about the unplated throughholes is on the mark. The second point not much as they could have just send out a retrofit kit with covers for the unused connectors.
Love the case 😀 really not liking that fan controller tho don't like the way it's mounted or the fact it's not got plated screw holes 🤔 but seems to be a good reaction from fractal so far 🙂 be nice to see the kit fractal put out to solve this 🙂
They've just recalled them in america because of the fan hub issue so I'm sure they've recalled it back in UK as well so I would check before you start the build My MSI Forge Mag 100r case has a similar 4 fan board for its own ARGB fans but I've taken it out and installed a Corsair Lightning Node Pro and LL120 3 Fan Kit with then a single fan LL120 for rear. I wasn't happy just didn't look right it was installed via screws and those gold things you use under your motherboard
I've had a terrible experience with fan controllers. Only one I ever bought was the corsair commander pro. It's fan1 port died first day since I plugged up my 3 fans to one header. The H710 case was pre wired like that. Figured it'd be fine. Went to buy some RGB led's for it and the header is proprietary or I didn't get the right one. Then the iCue software was almost 3gb, extremely bloated. Returned it and just have my fans plugged into the mobo. The 3 specifically wired into the AIO pump header since it supposedly can provide more amps.

Gigabyte and NZXT have to take notes to do things properly instead of burying their head deep. Kinda scary that we live in the age that doing the bare minimum to address such issues are applauded as being "caring" to customers. If I have spent 200$ on that case, I would of course expect it to be free from issues such as this one. Good thing the sales had been stopped. Seems Fractal Design takes NZXT fiasco relatively seriously.
The problem is that at this stage it's hard/impossible to know if this really is a problem. Like, I've pointed out potential issues of what I think _could_ go wrong with this hub, but this is pure speculation. Until we get more information or the replacement parts, we won't know if this was the big cock-up or just Fractal going overkill to make sure their new flagship case doesn't get a bad rep.
I don't know nothing about PC's... but can I fix this problem by connecting the fans to motherboard instead to fan hub from Fractal..? Is it bullshit? :D
Yea you can use mobo headers. The fan hub is useful here though, as the case comes with 5 high-power fans pre-fitted, so you need a lot of beefy fan headers if you want to go direct to the mobo
You can just remove the fan header, since most really don't need it anyway. Especially if you have 1 cpu fan hdr, 1 pump hdr, and 5-6 sys fan hdrs on your mobo (like most do).
The entire top flood-fill plane is 12v, which hasn't been pulled back from the screw holes. So any scrape damage around the the screw holes will short 12v to ground via the screw. This is exactly what happened to the NZXT H1. Since the hub is pre-fitted, this is fairly unlikely as there's no reason for the user to be moving it or unscrewing it, but again, it's bad design. On a mobo, the power planes are pulled right back from screw holes, and on other devices like the PCI-E riser I show, the holes are plated to ensure that can't happen. I'm not keen on the idea of a flood-fill 12v on top either, but I'm not an electronics engineer, so not sure how taboo that is.

This hub is also powered off of a SATA connector, so it's not running all the fans off of one port. The difference with this one and the Nexus+ is down to buffering. The Nexus+ buffers the PWM signal, but more importantly it buffers the voltage from the 'control' fan header, so if you're voltage controlling your case fans (3pin) it will relay that. The fractal's hub can only do PWM control. But since the case itself comes with a full compliment of 4pin fans, it's kind of a non-issue. I actually have separate controllers anyway, with my intakes being managed by an AIO, and the lower fans on a separate controller that manages them based on GPU temp.

I have been building premium gaming and workforce PCs for 30 years and I can tell you that you are NOT a builder you are a fixer. I like your repairing content but your builds from a professional point of view are bad. You let your taste overwhelm your judgment. Just look at the case you are coming from and your parts selection. There is NO difference between you and an armature in this regard. Please stick to fixing and repairing. You really shine there! Please take care. All the best!
