The book this movie is based on is called Hold Autumn in Your Hand by George Sessions Perry. I read it for a college literature class back in the 90s. The book is supposed to be set in the country right outside the town of Rockdale, Texas. It just so happens that my grandfather was a sharecropper not far from Rockdale back in the 20s and 30s. I gave him the book to read, and when he was finished he told me with a grin, "I didn't think he'd get it all in there, but he did!"
High praise. The book is hard to find, but I recommend it if you enjoyed the movie.
I love this film. The story gives us a good look at how our recently passed folks went through to allow us our present. This would represent about 100 years ago, when my parents were the age of those two children. Makes you thankful for their efforts. ❤️
As we called it THEY WEATHERED THE STORMS IN LIFE. Support each other in everything. A great lesson to learn about LIFE.

If yu know Marcel Pagnol (french southern truculent author) and his novels.. See a serial of films ("Fanny"... "la terre de mon pere" etc) adapting his novels with great actress such as Y Montand... G Depardieu... Same kind of "painting" the harsh world of southeast french provence farmers behaviors. With their funny.. Amusing.. And mokking accent.

Superb to watch them times where the pioneering was rough though they had good times thoroughly enjoyed the wholesome of it all Worthwhile giving time to watch
Thank you Feature Flims for a wonderful family movie! Showed how people had to work hard to survive. No Uber eats, you had to raise food yourself or go hunting/fishing. Picking cotton was extremely hard work. This movie should be required in school. We had to read the book, "The Grapes of Wrath," about the migration of Oklahomans out west during the dust bowl. It's on flim starring Henry Fonda.
I took care of people like this as a nurse in their last days. These people from this generation will ALWAYS get respect from me. They were the greatest generation this country produced.

This is such a touching film about perseverance. Zachary Scott was one sexy guy! Betty Field's performance is very touching. This is my first time viewing this film and it's become one of my favourites.
Scott was wasted in a lot of routine "baddy" roles after the 1940s: in the mid-'60s he was killed by a brain tumo(u)r at the early age of 51. He summed-up his acting persona as that of "a heel with charm"
My grandparents and both of their parents were all cotton farmers in West Texas. I once asked my dad what he wanted to be when grew up. He said, "Anything but a cotton farmer". He was an oilfield pump Jack mechanic. This movie makes me respect them even more. Parts were hard to watch.

So marvelous movie by Jean Renoir, french movie maker with a bunch of famous films.
I didn't see this one again since... 45 years I guess. Made think about my mother side family. They flood out of germany in 35 (to avoid nazi repression)... And settled in a log my Opa / gran pa built on riverside of a canal. Hard life to survive. No help...no consideration as "germans" in france. Numerous family...
But they did it. In their farm and made their kidfos grow and be well educated.
My father family who were irish-US migrated too from germany to Ftance in 1939. They were true worthy people so it was pretty easier for them.
For every french jean renoir is a "must" in movie making : all of us knows some famous sentences in his films such as Arletty (french great actress) saying on a bridge in Paris to her "lover" : "Atmospheeeere ?! Atmosphere... Est ce que j'ai la gueule d une atmosphere?" (do I look like an atmosphere?)... Or a nice contraversional film on 1st WW "la grande illusion" with P. Fresnay and a great german actor of this period erich von ströheim.

Our actual films nowadays are based on these old movies and the wonderful art of writing and filming actors with a very good scenario close to low people conditions real life.
We forgot that history of usa is based on such simple and fair values... And a whole bunch of people dedicated to hard works during centuries in order to built a new life in a new country.
Tks again... I thought to my very few irish forfathers who were deported in 1637 near Richmond... And survived. Their life was probably worst than in this movie for very long decades.

Probably the best of Renoirs American films but IMO he never achieved the success of his pre war French classics or even when he returned to France and directing. He has troubles with the studio big wigs here in America. I've read. (But bro, this is not a western. It's a drama. Did you watch it before posting it?))
True. I credit this to Hollywood snobbery. The pulled the same crap with Hitchcock. As his career exploded other directors were furious he got such admiration (and money).
People do not realize what a fledgling business Hollywood was and built on ignorant labor who soon prospered but learned very little.
