I think Atmosphere has the best fanbase, because they've remained relatively underground. All their fans are genuine and don't just come to concerts to hear one or two songs.
Hm, I can see where you're coming from @@true_plays_games, but I don't entirely agree. Well I agree that of the catalogue's many offerings, the old's superior to the new, but it's hard to top something that good even when it's your own. I don't think falling somewhat short of auto peak genius should render all attempts worthless, though. Slug's writing has been a lot less dark in recent years though, I will admit that. And we Atmosphere fans sure love ourselves some darkness, don't we? So I absolutely feel you, at least in regards to -why- you would feel the way you do. However, I was 17 in 2003 when I first started listening and I'm 38 now. Slug is over 50. We both got old, is what I'm saying. Hardly anyone stays the same person forever, and no one can stay the same age forever (and live to tell the tale). One's personality or temperament; what their day to day looks like from year to year, that's likely to change over time whether they want it to or not. So the artist (and consequently their style) might evolve, grow, mellow out or whatever, but fans will likely experience changes like these in themselves/their lives as well, eventually. I don't see any evidence of malfeasance here, IMO. I think it can't be called 'selling out' as long as what you're selling is truth, even if your truth has changed. That does tend to happen when our perspectives are broadened and we come to a better understanding of ourselves an others. I used to feel all this angst and rage when I was younger; felt super depressed all the time; irritable. Atmosphere was integral in my getting past that; the salient detail being that I AM past it. The roughest parts are over for me (in life I mean, hopefully not in the boudoir), so I'm cool with chiller music now because my battle's over. Well, the battle against angst and rage, anyway. I don't quite have a handle on the depression just yet, but...I don't think Slug really does either. Come to think of it he kinda says so in one of the new(ish) songs I really love. In the song 'Okay' he says, "they asked if I'm depressed; I don't doubt it". And like, yeah. Same. Which reminds me, here is where we really differ- personally, I don't think having enough money to live comfortably truly marks the end of the struggle for anybody, least of all a tortured-soul-of-an-artist type. "The struggle" refers to so much more than just poverty. I mean, money does make you happier to a certain point (there's even a famous scientific study that backs up that assertion), but if you've lived a hard life and you struggle with mental health, self-esteem issues, etc, no amount of wealth cures that. It could pay for a really good therapist though I guess, but that sounds awful time-consuming for a professional rapper slash father that still tours. So yeah, I think growing up and maturing as a man/father, plus the general passage of time is way more likely to have curated the style you're rejecting. Not materialistic inconsequentia like the 3-ply toilet paper, name brand groceries and sheets with a decent thread count he can now afford. 'Cause like, Slug may be doing very well for an underground artist in Minnesota, but he's not exactly on the short list for an MTV cribs remake, let's be honest. 😂 Still, even if he had changed his style on purpose all at once rather than naturally in increments, his new music does have real value, even if it's different. A great example is the song 'Virgo': Really powerful lyrics, and the instrumental underneath stands out both for being an atypical musical style to accompany rap (slow tempo acoustic guitar), and for being that haunting kind of beautiful that can really move you if aren't a bitch about that "feeling things" thing (not that I suspect you are). That song makes you fear for your legacy while staring down your mortality. You ask me, that's some classic dark Sean Daley shit right there, albeit in an especially euphonious package . Don't write him off just yet, that's my only advice. And if you're younger than me, really really don't write him off yet, because you might just need to grow into the new shit still. I'm not sure if I would have enjoyed a more mature Slug so much if I wasn't like a stone's throw from the crest of the old hill myself. Nah, still probably would have. But who knows.

This has always pretty much been my favorite Atmosphere song and that's hard to choose. But I relate so much, especially being an addict, off and on, and dealing with these women who hurt me. kew20 Same song name but by the bands; Crosby Stills Nash & Young, and Jefferson Airplane. It was co-written. Both versions are amazing. But I personally prefer CSN&Y version just a tad.
This has always pretty much been my favorite Atmosphere song and that's hard to choose. But I relate so much, especially being an addict, off and on, and dealing with these women who hurt me. It really makes me feel like I won't ever break this cycle. But the song gives yourself that hope that maybe "something," "someone," or "some place," will eventually RESCUE ME.
