Grazie Stefano Italia.
I've become more and more interested in Musica Andina over the last few years and decided to take a shot at learning the Quena. Nayo is right - getting a consistent tone is the hardest part! At first I found it very hard to concentrate on getting my mouth right at the same time as properly covering all 7 holes. Eventually, I ended up covering all the holes with masking tape so that I could limit my concentration to just learning how to make the right shape with my mouth. This is much easier! Hope this helps anyone else that is learning!
Great tutorial. My roommate sadly abandoned her instruments and fish here. One of them being a beautiful quena. I've always wondered how to get a sound from it, and this helped me get something from it. Very nice instrument.
Thank you, I am absolutely amazed.I cut 2 pieces of PVC,one to try a single pan flute pipe and the other for a Quena just to try the concepts to see if it was a doable project. The pan pipe worked so I started on a G3/4 Quena and just cut the embouchure and thought I would see if it worked before drilling more holes. I blew like I was blowing a pan pipe and nothing happened and then remebered the Wuauquikuna guys used a different embouchure for the Quena. I have read that some folks try for hours to get a sound but I started watching this video and was making a tone halfway through it. I know nothing about flutes, just keyboards and saxophone which is a simple reed anyone can blow. This guy is great. Thanks again.
i got a quena as a gift when i was a little kid, this is the first time i've gotten a decent sound out of it and it took less than a minute with your instructions. thank you!
I've ordered a Quena, which should arrive this week. Your instructions here are very encouraging that will help me to get the hang of the flute once it arrives.
How could anyone dislike this video. *This is a simply incredible tutorial for what is a very tricky technique.* 💎💎 Thank you so much, really really helpful. 💎💎
Thank you all for your great responses to this video. I have been playing the kena for 40 years and giving many, lesson, so, I know the instrument very well, both as a performer and a teacher. This overwhelming response, however, was unexpected, and very motivating to do more. Well, this media is new to new, so please be patient. I am planning to place a couple of videos more in the next couple of weeks. The new videos will focus on getting a good tone and working with the quena's avertones.
I tried for a good hour because I really wanted to find out myself. I don't play any flutes like this so this was new to me. After just seeing you play one note I instantly got my first note and now I understand. Good video.
How maaaany time I went close to pass out blowing like crazy, my first error : moving to many part of my mouth! Thank you a lot!! Very simple and instructive video!
This explanation could not be clearer. Thank you so much for making this video ! I play other flutes, but this is my first attempt at the Quena. I hope I succeed. The sound is so beautiful !
I had abandoned the instrument because I couldn't get any sound out of it. Now I just found the video and got the sound in 3 minutes. I need practise of course, but it's just such a clear, great explanation. Thanks!
Thanks to this instruction im playing the melodies I have in my head just days after I've bought my first Quena. A VERY. Good. Teacher. Huge thanks Señor Nayo! Cheers from Sweden.
Thank you for this! I used to play the trumpet, but it's been a few years and my embouchure isn't as developed anymore. Will get it back in shape and keep trying!
I'm learning to play the Danso, and there are no videos for it. Thankfully, this Quena tutorial works just as well since they're very similar flutes. Now I just need to work out how to get a tone without feeling light headed afterwards. Thanks for all the help.
Thank you very much for this. I've played a modern flute for decades and I've been struggling with the embouchure on the quena. I'm also THRILLED to see you playing the exact same quena I have! I was never sure if I'd bought a good quena because the price really wasn't that much.
I am 70 and play guitar. I just got the exact instrument today and was so discouraged until I saw his video. I've loved native flute music and wanted a challenge.😊
Thanks after that one tip about the lips it took my 20 minutes to master the technique amazing been trying to get the lower notes work the whole flight and couldnt get it sound clear now it works perfectly
Great video, really helped me understand what my problem with my upper lip was. I'm still not great but this has helped me expand the sound I can make!
Just purchased one of these at a festival and this video will help. Though developing on recorder, this is some challenge. But will continue to watch the video as after one week can barely get any sound. I thank you sincerely and please make a series of instructional videos.
very helpful Nayo! Thanks. For me, it was the position of the lower edge of the flute. for you looks like the notch of the chin. When I moved the flute there I got a stronger better tone then how I was playing. Thanks!
gracias hermano ,good teacher my first day learning that my grand parents were native indian,so now i'm looking to increase my musical taste ,with pure wind instrument Thanks a lot
Hmm, that's different from the embouchure I was taught for quena. It's too late to try tonight as the quena is very loud but I'll give it a try tomorrow and see how it goes. The method I was taught was tighten the chin and protrude the lower lip while tightening the upper lip as with a grin. So, pout and grin at the same time. I do get a nice tone on my home made quena and have done some amateur performing, but in recent years and now a senior, I'm not playing as much & finding control more difficult to maintain. So I will try your way and see if this improves, thanks.
Thank you Nayo I have been trying to learn a song called Sadness and Sorrow but couldn't even get a tone, Quena is pretty difficult but I will practice what you showed us :}
great video! I was having a very difficult time with my embouchure (and still will need A LOT of practice) but this is the most helpful video, I was actually able to produce a good sound!
Nice video, I bought one for my professor as a present but didn't know how to play it. I had a presumed it broken until I saw this.It still seems a little difficult to do. Thank you
Thank you very much. I have an instrument based on an Ice Age find, and doesn't have a modern equivalent. It is most similar to the quena, however, so I am relying on your videos for instruction. It doesn't have the same fingering, of course, but beggars can't be choosers.
Great tutorial and very encouraging. Do you however, have any advice for people with no lower teeth or poorly fitting dentures? I am Kwahadi (Comanche nation) and have played Native American flute for about 35 years. I finally decided to branch out and learn the quena and the pan flute. I recently made a CD titled Kindred Spirits, and was accompanied by the wolves at the Colorado Wolf & Wildlife Center here in Colorado. Loved doing that, and was wondering if my next one could be with the Native American flute and thee quena. I think it will be fun! I am having a bit of trouble changing octaves with the quena though. I believe your video will give me some tools to master this (I hope!).
I was not allowed to play flute in school because I had an overbite. I am hoping at age 60 with an over bite I can play this flute! Thanks for the video..
Ohhh! I want to get a quena!!! This video is great, it took me so long to figure out how to make sound in my side blown flute, and the embouchure for this is very different!
Veri nice!!! Thanks.❤️ Friend, Artist and Master. Hi, dear Artist and dear friend, I'm Alessio Peluso from Bologna (Italy). For three months I have been learning to play Quena, magnificent instrument, together with the panflute! For some time I have not been able to emit clean notes, especially those of the second and third octave. Could it be due to the humidity that is created in the cut of the bit? Can you give me some advice on how to treat and take care of the instrument? Apart from studying and repeating the exercises, what can I do? Thank you so much my friend
well this is the second time in my life trying to play a quena, and i get wonderful notes by accident. i can't get the lowest note and i'm wondering 'seriously - if the cut in the top of the Quena is correct because it's very shallow
"Don't move anything" is great advice for this instrument, it's very sensitive
The instrument is a Quena Okay?)
It may sound bogus but its true
Really true! Once you have a tone don't move
That is better quality than most Instrument videos on UA-cam, thank you.

Following these instructions I got it on my first attempt! Excellent explanation!
Note: I still sound like an asthmatic recorder. Keep practising everyone :)

You heard the man. " the fingering, is quite simple" lmao
Yeah, until you get into the third octave
yes but first you need to develop strong lip technique before you start playing with the holes

Hi,
dear Artist and dear friend,
I'm Alessio Peluso from Bologna (Italy).
For three months I have been learning to play Quena,

Thank you so much my friend
Very concise and informative instruction. Thank you.
Found one of these in my closet and immediately looked for a guide lmao
I used hose clamp and made ring from a bigger pvc pipe to hold and control quena when all fingers are off the holes .
thanks so much this is very helpful
Muchas gracias 😊 me sirvió mucho
Thank you for an Excellent tutorial!!!

You can make quena for different scales .

Hi You’re the one who performed at Botanical Garden Baguio
well this is the second time in my life trying to play a quena, and i get wonderful notes by accident. i can't get the lowest note and i'm wondering 'seriously - if the cut in the top of the Quena is correct because it's very shallow
Thank you so much, I noticed my Quena runs sharp, any way to correct this?
The exactly same embouchure with the way of Korean Danso(indigenous flute).
Very useful. Thank you.
thx. the fingering is not simple for me. Can't get the holes shut, feels like my fingers are too small.
Thx for the lesson, but it's very hard during long time
