Steve and Tim. I'm just going to say that you guys set the standard of tech channels. Especially obviously for PC information. I watch you guys before anyone else because of how in depth and thorough you guys are. Keep it up. And stay frosty.

Set the standard except for Gamers Nexus obviously. Those guys are in a league of their own as far as tech info goes. These guys are still very good. Gamers Nexus are probably a little to thorough to ever be main stream.

Also, I said in another post I got it on the Boxing day sale for $1679 Delivered!
(although I paid an extra $150 on top for the extra 2yr (5yr total) panel replacement warranty)
Have you seen the warranty and return grievances for other Acer x34 panels in the past, hope whoever buys one wins the Panel lotto because the "difference between that and this" is equaled with having to ship the item back to them only once.
Dell's Alienware AW3418DW is still cheaper then the Acer if you have to pay delivery on if you're not able to pick it up at PCCG in Melbourne.
Oh and if anything happens in the future I don't need to pay to ship to/from Dell, no matter how many replacements (if any) are needed unlike a return to Acer

Well, if you're not doing any color accurate work, modern VA panels are actually better than IPS. The contrast is soooo much better for games and movies/multimedia in general and the color saturation/accuracy are almost up there with IPS panels. As long as the ghosting isn't too pronounced (it can still be terrible on certain VA panels, unfortunately), VA > IPS. HDR monitors in the future will likely be VA or OLED, but not IPS, the black luminosity is way too high. Still waiting for 35", VA, 1440p UW, 200Hz, HDR, GSync monitors !

  • @fluidz23

I'd like to see if this monitor has coil whine, as it plagued some owners of the original X34/X34a, and Acers response was that it was normal.
Thanks for the honest review, especially the mention of white balance shift on the right side with delta >2, it seems the Alienware equivalent has this issue too. There's lot of mention of it over at ultrawide masterracer subreddit and it seems people are generally unhappy about it - at north of a grand I would be too.
In total I sent my Acer X34a monitor back to Acer 5 times as each one had issues. They recognised a fault each time and placed it under repair, they simply replace the panel with another somebody sent in, with another issue. I received replacement panels with dead pixels, really bad uniformity, blotch under the screen, fixed vertical banding line splitting left and right side of the panel and excessive coil whine at 60hz whilst browsing the web. And they all passed a quality control check before being shipped back to me.
Just because we're gamers doesn't mean we have to accept these flaws.

This review is unique. My only concern is to a choice between the Acer Predator X34P other 1440p ultrawide, but this is the best monitor.

I just picked this baby up today! :) $1,699 AUD (Aussie Dollars). Pretty much the same comments as reviewer. No dead pixels, but some dark shading around the edges. Not too much of an issue compared to what she has to offer. Over all very happy :)

Fantastic review, thanks for giving a shit about the colour! I'm sure a lot of buyers will be buying this as a slightly compromised gaming/content creation monitor like myself. I'm running the original X34 too, and though I can tell the colour is slightly inferior to my trusty Dell, it works enough that I can deal with it and enjoy the vastly superior gaming performance. I love that this is one of the first reviews and this is likely going to be the best/most informative that will come out :D

  • @slotmachinecrazy

i bought this monitor a few days ago as a replacement for the acer predator z35 which had really horrible ghosting, this monintor though the x34p is an absolute monster of a monitor not to mention the lighting aura you get that runs along the bottom of the monitor and its fully customisable is a very nice touch indeed, i was running a 6gb gtx 1060 @ 3440x1440p resolution and was getting 40fps @ ultra settings in games like nfs payback, kingdom come deliverance and i was getting 120fps on fifa 18 @ ultra settings, the difference you can see between full hd and 3440x1440p is amazing, the crisp clear images are amazing, i had to send this monitor back as i just couldnt have a £1k monitor sat on my desk, its too much money to spend for something to happen where it could get damaged and it was just niggling at me all the time so i sent it back but all the same i was very very happy with it fingers crossed the price will come down soon and i wouldnt hesitate one bit to buy again, if i had one gripe with it, it would be the stand, its huge and takes alot of desk space, why acer didnt keep the stand that came with the z35 i dont know as that stand was alot more better in design and size and overall looked so much better

  • @genx156
    @genx156 5 років тому

Acer did a refresh, The X34A in the UK, which upgraded the stand to also swivel - I just use a monitor arm though. The glossy finish on the X34 is fine (stop mauling the back of your monitor - or at least wipe it when your done) 😁

If it makes anyone feel any better the website listed is an Australian one meaning the $1699 price is in AUD. If you're in the U.S. with a slightly better exchange rate the price is closer to $1400. Not that we actually know since this monitor isn't for sale on any major retailer's website as of today. $1699 is steep, $1400 is steep. When initially announced in 2016 the price point was supposed to be around $1100 with an expected price drop for the standard X34 to around $8-900. I don't plan on waiting for the HDRs since they will be closer to $2000-3000. You won't even be able to run any games at 4k resolution at 60 fps anyways. Not even with a 1080 TI.

That's people who had no idea of how PC's work obviously. Smartphones have too many disadvantages over desktop Pc's which can't be solved with our current technology.
VR headsets on the other hand only need a bit more improvement and there's nothing that monitors have that VR headsets don't. And VR gives you the immersion to actually be in the game.

Just bought one of these and even though it cost me nearly $800 for the upgrade from the original X34, I think it's worth it.
The immersion (1900R curve), better build quality and the image quality is just as good with a few tweeks.

    • @Hardwareunboxed

They say it's "overclocking" so they can advertise it as a 120Hz monitor even though some of the monitors won't be able to run at 120Hz. Allows them to get better yields while still advertising top features

Is running the 120Hz OC for this monitor all the time (for daily use) going to kill it faster? I don't really get how OCing a monitor fits in with daily use for people seeing as I'm still stuck in the 60Hz TV generation. Do people have to set OC everytime they play to avoid killing the monitor lifetime faster? Or is it a norm to just set that OC to the stated rate and leave it as is?

If only every revised product could be as good as this!
Going from Acer X34 to a X34P is a great improvement!
I’ll buy the Acer Predator X34P, or the Alienware AW3418DW.
Hopefully I get a good one with minimal ips glow, or ips bleed.
It seems silly to wait for HDR 200HZ monitors. HDR support is terrible! Windows cannot even use it.. HDR is just to premature for PC, as it’s geared more towards console.. Sure, there are a few games here and there that support it. But, buying an HDR monitor will immediately result in you disabling HDR in windows as the picture looks horrible!
So, I’d recommend buying a X34P or equivalent and enjoying it for 5+ years!

The PG35VQ actually appeared at CES 2018. The reason why the PG35VQ and X35 are taking so long to launch is probably due to AU Optronics having trouble getting high yield from their production. Mass production of that particular panel begins in Q2 2018 according to www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/high_refresh_rate.htm .

You could also find slight difference in colors on 2 exactly same models from different batches, so i wont hurry up and say that the X34 has better colors than the x34p even if these particular 2 that you tested are a bit different. The QA on Acer is not exactly Eizo.

I'm happy with my X34, i have had none of the issues i have heard about and easily did 100hz, I really don't see the point spending a couple of hundred more for the X34P and the OSD you use once then never touch it again, I will wait for a 5120x2160 is released in couple of years.

What do you think so far? I was debating between this one and the z321qu. But the z321 is super hard to find reviews on! And it's a va instead of ips. And 31.5" instead of 34.

@@Gosling_dkc I'm honestly super satisfied so far. Went from a XB270HU (one of the if not THE original 27" 1440p 144hz ips monitors from acer). Had that for a few years and was happy with that as well but was simply tired of having 2x27" monitors. Dont know about your hardware but I will say some beefy GPU/CPU is needed to run games on the native resolution.

@@Gosling_dkc I mean at the end of the day a DoA or dead pixels can happen on literally any monitor. Chalk it up to good luck / bad luck. But yeah, performance wise, think of it like this, the resolution jump from 2560x1440 -> 3440x1440 is around 25% , therefor you will get some performance hits in games. That being said, seeing as the monitor is 120Hz and not 144Hz as my previous one, you can say those 25% loss in fps are also somewhat represented in the lower Hz. My point is, you should be fine.

Nice to see it has dropped to a reasonable $1200. Actually considering buying one now to compliment my trusty 27" samsung SA750D. Definitely getting my money out of the samsung, it somehow makes 1080p viewable on a 27" screen and still looks really good next to 1440p. I really want an ultra wide though.... curse you budget!!!

@Gareth I have a 980ti and don't really game much anymore anyway. An untrawide is a much better investment for any PC really as you are going to be using a screen for a lot longer than a GPU will last you though and it improves all uses of the PC

unless you have a gtx 1080ti you wont be pushing out games at 120fps on this monitor, i have the Original x34 and use a gtx 1080 and i can barely push out games at 100fps on high. At this point its not worth the 400-500$ premium. Love the new design tho!

Funny thing about monitors though is they usually pass from pc to pc. One of the few components that don't age poorly generally. It's always worth spending more on a monitor as it will be used for several PC's generally speaking. How many pixels will your 1180 or 1280 push?

120hz is fine, your not gonna push framerates much beyond that anyway. I own a AH-IPS monitor with the same panel as this, and let me tell you it is gorgeissimo! You do not need HDR, certainly the majority of us would rather save the $700, then get an otherwise identically functioning monitor but with HDR.
