(7:56) Sounds similar to the sound effect in the Lego star wars games where you have to build an item/object, but quieter 🙂

This is such a well-crafted documentary, I've never seen my own experience in the hobby so vividly described before. All the other content creators put a lot of emphasis on the sound, but what truly hit it home for me has always been the feeling of them. You really can't convey it through digitally as much as it is an in-person experience.

I cannot get over the artistry in every single video you make. Every shot/scene you do there's something totally new and interesting artistically and I absolutely live for it. The near to last scene with the darker room but a harsh blue tinged light made me feel like i was in an office late at night staring at my super old computer keyboard from back when they still used those off white color plastics.

You're joining at the right time, there's some really good "budget" or "entry-level" boards out now, along with switch makers and keycap creators that are resetting the entire pricing scheme of the hobby. Welcome, wish you the best and enjoy your journey.

Love the video production quality and hearing the thoughts from someone who is looking at the hobby with fresh eyes! That Keychron ended up sounding really nice.

for someone who wants to get into this hobby, I would say yes a few years ago, but now you can buy so many pre-builds and they are excellent and cheap, yet sometimes pre-builds offer more features like wireless connections and RGB if you're into it.

Gotta lube those switches yourself Joe! I bought pre-lubes ones and they were ok but then lubed them myself and it was truly unbelievable. Makes more difference than anything else

Personally I'm loving the idea of Hotswappable keyboards, I got one that the base feels just proper. the replacement hardware seems to be available with multiple brands, including switches, keys and keycaps. I like the idea of it because the base is nice, so I can keep that and keep upgrading as long as I don't want to go back from TKL

I just recently got a DIY Kit and built a GMMK 75% Pro barebone, added some kailh box v2 white switches and some PBT keycaps. It's very nice and clicky, but not as sharp of a click as the cherry MX blues or Razer greens. Not very great to use if there are others in the room though because the clickiness might make people go insane lol. Got mine built for around 200€

I struggle to want to go further into some of these more custom setups because the optical switches are more prevalent and good with software assist to have customizable actuation points and rapid trigger (SteelSeries Apex Pro TKL, wooting) and those switches are not something you can trivially buy off the shelf. Just being able to switch a keyboard from hair trigger to civilized and back again with the touch of a button just feels too nice to give up.

Typing this on a Keychron K2 with brown cherry switches. Best money I ever spent. I always thought it felt like typing on bone, but your decription of marble might be better.

My 'issue' is that i only like low profile keyboards, basically laptop style scissor switch keys. so there isnt many options that have all the features i want e.g. full size wired ones that arnt £150. I got a cheap HP one which had the features but felt sooo cheap and the keys rocked and would get stuck if you push them at a wrong angle ha. recently bought the cherry stream keyboard for £25 and it feels really high quality and is perfect for me :) its basically an office keyboard but works for gaming.

I've got a ROG Falchion keyboard, it's sooo sick, touch bar on the side, battery lasts forever and the back lit leds are super smooth, also it's 60% size so it gves me tons of space on my table

I'm looking for a basic wireless keyboard, essentially a featureless box with keys. All the standard options are too gamer-y, with RGB out the wazoo and edges that have more edges on them. Then I look into custom keyboards for a bit, until I remember that I already have a job that isn't "Keyboard Expert" and all I want is a decent wireless keyboard. Keychron looks nice, but I've read too much about terrible latency, especially when wireless.

Welcome to the hobby. Next you'll start wondering what linear keyboards are like, and how much better are gasket mounted keyboards really, and why are people spending $250 on GMK keycaps, and why are people spending 4 hours lubing their switches. Then all of a sudden you'll have spent $1000+ for a hunk of aluminum on your desk and have a shelf full of parts. When you are typing on a keyboard all day, everyday, you are rewarded for your efforts as you personalize it.

I have a Keychron K2 (not the Pro, I don't think) and I'm sorry, but I'm not impressed. I found it amplifies (!) inaccurate typing which is a bit of a problem when you're getting older and dexterity is declining. Instead, my favourite keyboard is a previous generation Happy Hacking Keyboard where the made a high quality membrane keyboard.
But the other problem I have with such keyboards is that you can never customise the _layout_. Or, at least, I haven't found one where you could do that. This is exemplified by my HHK which puts the Control key left of the A key (and the Backspace key above Enter). That's one of the reasons I originally bought my HHK.

Yeah this is going to escalate so quickly. If you are in us check mode sonnet I think it's something you'll really like as your first premium mech keeb. It's far far more superior than the keychron and I think it'll serve you well in a long time and you can experiment and customize it more to your liking and taste.
