  • Welcome back for a birthday collab special with my fellow scottish sewist and partner in crime ‪@SEWDOITEMMA‬ ❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 We both celebrated our birthdays last week so as a treat we decided to team up for a collab and pattern review that might be a little bit controversial! We decided to put our previous issues with TATB patterns to one side and have a crack at the Mabel Dress! In this video I share my thoughts about the pattern pre and post making, I show you mine sewn up, and answer the £64 million question, would I make it again?
    If you enjoyed this vlog please give it a like, share, and subscribe if you want to hear more from me! Plus head over to Emma's channel and see how she got on with her vlog: • COLLAB REVEAL & Review...

    It looks very very nice❤ I have those same bust to waist to hip issues. We will have plenty of fitting knowledge.

    I LOVE your honest review! I have had good results for TATB patterns as a larger size sewist but I have made so many adjustments to make all patterns fit me well. Great tips on picking a size. Cup sizes are very nice to have in a pattern. Oh how I wish I could just make a pattern without adjustments. I think the cost of patterns are so high for such limited views that I look for options and hack-ability. Please do more collabs with @sewdoitEmma and more reviews! This was amazing to hear both your viewpoints. ❤ I plan to make this pattern soon!

    Looks lovely Jess. I have problems with Tilly patterns with the arms and shoulders and ok with other patterns so usually steer away from them and I think patterns are expensive .However your dress looks good x

    Yes! Pockets, great for hand but not for heavy phones. Love a pocket though, missed it on this and yes, it could’ve easily been added to the pattern when we had to literally draw the skirt. Like you, I’m really surprised how much I like it too! Happy Birthday to you 🎉

    Happy birthday 🎉Would you consider making the front of the dress one size larger keeping the smaller size above the arm hole. Thank you for your time and effort making this video. Very informative!

      Thank you! That is a good idea, I also think I might need to lengthen the bigger size as well just to create a bit more room!

    Happy birthday! Dress looks nice on you, but I guess this dress is meant to be blousy. Downsizing by more than 2 sizes changes designer's fit/intention. The fact that there is so much elastic used in shoulders and neckline means, it's easy to make it fit a lot more shapes. I always use length of elastic or cuffs as a guide, not expecting to fit me exactly. I noticed a few sewists who downsized Mabel had pulling on the back too. Also prewashing fabric cuts down a risk of shrinking.

    • @SoWhatIfISew
      @SoWhatIfISew  6 місяців тому

      Thank you for watching! Unfortunately even when I pick the larger size I still have pulling over the back, I think this is because there isn't enough bust space or volume in the block at any size - fingers crossed they start making a larger cup size 🤞

    Good thorough review! The thing I found frustrating about the Mabel is that changing the length of the elastic would be a simple way to adjust the fit but the the construction means you can't try it on as you're making it. By the time it's put together all the elastic is sewn down and edges are finished. I added patch pockets to mine! I do agree that the draft your own was a little cheeky. As a beginner I really srtuggled with cutting proper right angled corners so mine probably would have been a disaster.

    Really appreciate your honest thoughts on the pattern and your experience with Tatb.I think it looks great on you. I bought this pattern in a sale at the end of last year and am excited to make it up. I'm tall, a bit busty and don't have a big diff bw my waist and hips so am interested to see how I'll like it. And I totally hear you on the pockets, but I don't think the dress would do well with it since it's so light (but it's nice to have the option)!

    Hmmmm... Looks good on you. Wouldn't have noticed the rise on the front under your bust or the pulling on the back the sleeve of you haven't mentioned it. I think just placing the front pattern piece an inch or ½" from the fold of the fabric might solve the issue? The style of the dress suits you.

    I would be smaller than a size 1 for high bust but a 5 for full bust and hip for this pattern.
    It would really helpful if all brands started labeling for high bust and explaining how your base size should fit your shoulders/frame and what sewing cup size they draft for. As well as what body type!
    Cashmerette and Charm are good for this

    • @SoWhatIfISew
      @SoWhatIfISew  6 місяців тому +1

      THIS! I cannot like or agree with a comment enough! I am absolutely desperate for companies to start adding a high bust because I would be exactly the same as you

      @@SoWhatIfISew I pretty much exclusively sew Charm patterns now (her block and aesthetic fit me better than Cashmerette) because of this. I still have to make adjustments but it’s the same ones each time.
      I also don’t have a ton of options otherwise with a 70 cm/27.5” high bust with about a 10” difference. The push for size inclusivity has been great for the other end of the size chart but this end has definitely been left at the wayside (particularly in the move to make multiple cup sized garments - there are still more patterns in straight sizes than plus so this more about the lack of realization that smaller women can also be curvy). I’m not even the smallest person around, there are plenty of people who are more slender than I am.

    i fully agree with you. I'm so sorry TTB patterns/blocks don't fit me and it's not a matter of cup size, it's mainly a problem of arms and shoulders pulling, which is something common, apparently. I've tried the Indigo and Lyra and a couple from her books. No way to get a decent output, despite many different attempts.Having said that, I must admit I succeeded with the Marnie reducing the armseams because sleeves were only a bit tight. and I love this blouse. never had any issues with the instructions.

    • @SoWhatIfISew
      @SoWhatIfISew  6 місяців тому +1

      I fully agree and it seems to be a very common issue with the block! I'm glad you had success with the Marnie though ☺️

    You are right about the lack of fit for busty ladies. Tilly needs to start doing C and D cups. I am busty and I also really get annoyed when pattern companies only do bigger cup sizes on larger sizes. Slimmer ladies also can have bigger busts. I have always loved Tilly’s instructions and I think they are clear. I think they draft for a shorter human particularly the bodice. Tilly is not tall, perhaps it’s that influencing the block? It’s a lovely dress on you.

    • @SoWhatIfISew
      @SoWhatIfISew  6 місяців тому

      Hard agree with this!! The instructions on this one are great but I do think the block is based on Tilly and there is minimal consideration of curvier gals!
