The Scandinavian Hygge Lifestyle Taking The World By Storm

- Опубліковано 21 гру 2024
- Hygge is a Danish term defined as “a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.” In the past year, this concept of Scandinavian coziness has made inroads with an international audience. At least six books about hygge were published in the United States this year, with more to come in 2017. Author of the international best-seller The Little Book of Hygge, Meik Wiking takes VICE News on a hygge tour of Copenhagen coffee shops, library gardens and wine bars that epitomize the lifestyle trend.

As a Danish/American dual citizen, I can tell you all definitively that "hygge" is real. There is no BS here. There is no propaganda. Visit Denmark and you'll experience an incredibly warm and happy culture. In sharp contrast to the US, the Danish government works hard to better the lives of its citizens. Most people in this comment section are very ignorant and too angry about the state of the US to understand that there are great places and cultures beyond US shores.
MrMentalSoul So what would be an example of danes being warmer?
great comment! I'm an American who wishes to live in Copenhagen in the future. I am just so tired of the unequal, materialistic society of the US. It is so draining to live in such a hateful, fearful nation all the time. Greetings from Colorado
Thats nice, dear.
Ah the grass is always greener on the other side as we say here. I really hope the Dutch aren't "boring" or "rude" as you say. Best wishes
MrMentalSoul I want to move to Scandinavia really bad. greetings from Texas
People in Denmark and Scandinavia overall aren't disproportionately happy because of "Hygge" or cultural reasons, but rather because of the material conditions in their countries.
As the Danish man pointed out in the video, they have social democratic polices that provide social programs and safety nets for people. Workers have health care, quality public education, and more.
In the US, millions upon millions of people are living paycheck-to-paycheck, worried about how they are going to pay their rent and provide for their children.
You can practice Hygge all you want, but if you're in poverty and have no social support, you aren't going to be happy.
Sorry to say so but you are wrong. happyness dont cost anything..
Ben Norton Well said! Thank you! He said: "Additional income does not make you happier..." The reality is: very most of the times now in the US, the "extra" is not "additional income", but sustenance.
I Doubt that. They have very high social trust. This cannot be granted by government, but instead takes a homogenous population with specific cultural norms.
no the danes dont have a homogenous population with specific cultural norms. they have free health care, free education and dont have to work three jobs to support their family tho. they are the most happy people in the world (or was last year) and its not bc "homogenous" or whatever, at least I THINK. because denmark has immigrants just like almost every european country, and they are not at the same level of happiness. dont think it has anything to do with heritage tbh. swedes are more nationalistic too, their police let nazis walk free on their streets and such. the social trust in denmark i would say is bc of the so called "social net" but with that means that the government got your back and you can stay home and not be homeless if you suffer an accident/illness/pregnancy or whatever reason you cant work, and you can go to school without putting yourself in debt for your entire life (not even swedes can do that lol)

In the US, we citizens work very hard to provide our politicians with as much hygge as they can take.
In my country that sugar daddy of yours basically supported a genocide to make some money...
👏🏼🙏
You hit the nail on the head there, dude.🙂
Bingo
teddy toto good one T...
"at some point, additional income does not lead to an improved quality of life." a lot of wisdom in this line.
One of the reasons for danes' happiness is due to a strong safety net which garantees you won't end up in the streets or dying of an minor health issue just because you loose your job. It's the consistency of income, not the amplitude of income that matters for happiness.
Exactly. Any income generated beyond a certain point should be subject to taxation to improve society. It should be impossible to become a billionaire.
osriodore Why do you say this? I agree but I’m just interested in your justification.
I dont know man.. the more i earn the more i can do. Makes me happy than being poor. Do idea what you guys are talking about tbh. lol Thanks Capitalism
@@sandrowachter5924 dude no one cares
"socializing for introverts" wow, that's so accurate
The other week, I got so frustrated by the hustle and bustle and stress and I remembered a friend mentioning the word hygge. So in desperation I bought a book on it. It really made my blood pressure go down reading it and I felt so relaxed. Our culture really needs to learn to unwind more. Perfectionism is toxic. There is something so beautiful in the minimalistic pursuit.
"...many people find that moment and they call it something else. It's a moment of groundedness when you're close to other people. And when you listen to your heart and see people with your heart."
I've had those moments. It's kind of when everything feels in harmony and you feel good and wholly present in that moment, talking with a friend or family member, likely laughing or sharing something good. I strive to make those moments. Moments of joy or just contentedness. And I believe he's right, you can make it happen no matter where you are in the world. It's just naming it that's so powerful and I love the Danes have a word for it.
The cringe level is high in these comments. One huge difference between Americans and Danes is that many Americans believe wealth and the continued accumulation of wealth is a sign of good character. You'll often hear these idiots defending Donny Tinyhands by saying things like, "he's a billionaire with a supermodel wife so he is better than you."
oh I'm sorry where is your golden new york penthouse at?
somethings are more important than a penthouse. Like self respect and a belief in your own human decency. Flaunting ur wealth doesnt make you a better or more likeable human being.
Well if you look into the politics of it, Americans aren't accustomed to socialism, and since the government here doesn't give you as much free stuff as they do in Scandinavia, wealth is valued. Socialism would never work here anyways, you just can't do it with a country that a) has capitalism ingrained into their politics for hundreds of years, and b) has a population over 100 million.
An Evolving Ape I'm American and I have to agree that from a young age success is often defined by wealth.
It's because it is :) "Greed for the lack of a better word, is good."
This is interesting. I imagine people would be overall happier if there day-to-day worries didn't include basic survival like having enough to eat, the ability to afford healthcare, not having to worry about how much an education will cost, etc.
... like MY nation .. *CANADA* :-))
PLxFTW That's difficult to achieve in any country with a huge population, or a nation that gets an influx of illegal immigrants that usually contribute nothing to a country in regards to wages or educational attainment.
You'll usually see that implementation of government offering various services when a population is stable, society is homogenous (people typically share the same values/ideals), and economic activity is stable (not an exponentially growing economy or a fluctuating economy).
DeepBlue Truly blessed and lucky to call myself a Canuck!
Nope, Americans will not like hygge. 2:42 He had said that Denmark is what US going to be like if Bernie Sanders is the President and Americans fucking hate the idea of a Commie becoming their President.
Viva Voce how is bernie a commie???
I suddenly understood exactly what hygge meant a minute into the video. I've experienced the feeling. I think we all have. Drinking hot chocolate by the fireplace while watching it snow outside.
I live in Denmark, with the threat of possibly being alone for Christmas, I bought some very pretty Christmas porcelain, the shop assistant, asked me if it was a present and I answered “No, if there is a lockdown, and I’m alone for Christmas, I’m going to have a really hyggelig time, and the porcelain is part of it”. You can hygge alone!😃😎
Hygge kan also be healthy. Hygge is a cup of tea. A dinner with good friends. You can still have a hygge time even if there are no candles involved. It's a fluid thing. The way Claus Meyer describes it is the most correct. Everybody does it. We (Danes) just have a name for it.
and u got it from norwegians 💀
It is like the swedish fika. Taking your time to sit down with a cup of coffee and a cinnamon bun just enjoying the food, atmosphere and yourself
I was raised in a family like this. I live in America and I grew up in a family where dinner was so sacred that we always ate together, no phones, no computers etc. im so grateful for being able to have that experience every night. I find that my family is much closer than a lot of my friends whose families almost never eat together. In addition to that my parents are much happier than most of my friends parents, and they say that cooking and eating together everyday helps them feel grounded and stay connected even when their lives are so busy and hectic. I would really recommend this to anyone, it 100% results in a closer, more stable, and supportive family.
But this is all dependent on basic needs being met first, and without the constant fear of losing them.
Bingo
Well said
Which is why they said their government takes the basic needs seriously. US government doesn’t care.
Then pay more tax and don't elect Cretins like Trump. Idiots!
A stroll through Target’s home decor aisle is Hygge for me....and smelling all the candles 🕯
hygge is one of the best things in the world. ( i am danish )
No why?
Hugh Jaynis hygge is not a bad thing. hygge can be so many things. what do you think hygge is ?
hygge is differend for every one. some one thinks its hygge too drink a beer with your good Friend. some thinks its hygge to go fishing . hygge can be spending time with the persons you love. hygge is when you are doing the things you like to do. i can think its hygge to play video games with my best Friend. while a other person whuld think that it is a waste og time.
Marius Frederiksen copenhagen is overtaken

Can someone from Denmark adopt me? I want hygge for rest of my life.
I am danish and for me hygge is how to describe a situation of joy and comfort.. you can experience hygge in many situations. It's a feeling above all ells
Why all the hate guys? This video is really Hygge and you guys need to calm down and enjoy life a bit!
Fluffay! Hyggeligt is the adjective, hygge the noun.
Americans are fucked up. It's literally a video about being comfy and the insane crowd is getting triggered over it. I feel sorry for the rest of you Americans who still have common sense.
The grammar is correct if the word hygge follows danish grammar rules
Welcome to 2019 USA
Basaltq my countrymen seem to think we’re better than everyone simply because we exist, independent of any real measure, and this results in a lot of anger when reality is put in front of them. It’s called Boosterism and it’s a plague that’s been with us basically since the beginning.
I really liked Denmark. They are a pretty content bunch. They aren’t running around jumping for joy or acting all obnoxious. They are sweet, zen and pleasant. They take time for themselves which is why they have the hygge thing down to a science. I was there in May two years ago, and it was cold, just like here in Canada. But they were still out there kayaking and paddle boarding, and all that stuff. Way to go, you guys. Gonna make me a cup of cocoa now. Peace out.
hope to see you back here some time. sounds to me like you'd fit right in :)
What is really funny though is that even though we have the highest rates of happiness here in Denmark, we also have the highest amount of prescriptions for antidepressives. It is a huge paradox, which is often left out of the conversation when talking about Danish people and their level of happiness.
what is the reason u think
Maybe they work 🤔🤔
As was said: hygge is socializing for introverts. Scandinavia is particularly introverted and loneliness ensues. I sure tend to avoid people for as long as I can. But when we meet, we hygge! :)
To be honest I wanna say only one thing, forget external factors and forget every rating and ranking and all stuff. To be really happy one has to look inside. If the search is not positive for a person, he will never be successful with finding happiness. I believe this.
My guess is it's the highly functional health system that has focus on and takes mental health serious that could be a good explanation for it.
I have bought Hygge into my life.. I have always had this nature and its warming and rewarding.
the second he started speaking in support of bernie I instantly purchased his book
SAME
If sitting in a cardigan eating hot chocolate and cake is "sinful" or "dangerous", shoot me.
we all going to hell in ugg boots
no, he said "sinful pleasures" as exclusive of the aforementioned sweets and and beverages. he didnt specify what those specific "sinful pleasures" where but i think he was obviously referring to hedonistic and homosexual erotic practices.
Pretty sure he was't talking about homosexual erotic practices.
Just listen between the lines. He obviously meant himself blowing his alpha partner and his black best friend.
just trolls, ignore them.
Hygge is a state of mind, being. Moderation, respect for life and co-operation not competition. Living in harmony with other humans, nature and being the best one can be. Most of all contributing to Hygge society for the betterment of nation, fellow citizens and progress. Danemark here i come!!! Whoop Whoop!!!😎
I'm dutch my bf is scandanavian and we live in Canada. Should be the happiest people ever according to the list 😂
averages include the bottom 10% who arent happy
Well...are y'all happy? 😅
Except Dutch families have insane fueds and ppl hate each other
Default123 Default what? I’m Dutch and not sure what you are talking about
@@eggman6888 If you mention it to someone in your extended family , there will be someone who knows about it.
Hygge for me is spending time cooking and having a great time with my friends. Taking a break from all the stress, demands etc. and just "being in the now".
The U.S. has severe issues and differences no one ever mentions when they say "something the U.S. can learn from Denmark, Norway, etc." Not to mention vast differences in both population size, diversity, and immigration issues.
To use simple imagery, if Denmark and the U.S. were boats, the U.S. would be a round, rudderless vessel, taking on water, being rowed by 1,000 different people in 1,000 different directions. When approaching a boulder, only a few people would see it and no one would hear them yelling about it.
Denmark would be a canoe of 5 people who look similar, think similarly, act similarly ("similar" ...not act "exactly alike"). All 5 would see the boulder and go around it.
It is as naive to think that Bernie Sanders would have righted the ship as it is to think Trump will get his wall. It is also just as dangerous to put your faith in one person. "Bernie/Trump will fix it." It's nonsense.
The actual take-away from Hygge is to worry about your friends, your family, and yourself. To treat yourself and those around you with a cozy kindness and respect. THAT is a great model to follow. THAT kind of mentality transforms nations better than any politician can or ever will.
So the question isn't "what can the U.S. learn from the Danish" it's "what can we learn from treating ourselves and others with respect."
Geek Therapy Radio Good point, it's often not pointed out that happiness doesn't scale well.
So America's problem is diversity?
Geek Therapy Radio Solid analysis and appreciated input.
Words of wisdom
Derrick G no -_- they're pointing out how the us and Denmark are very different (both in size and direction) so the same systems won't work in both.
It's not strictly Danish but is a core part of the Scandinavian cultures in general - they do this in Norway too and it's so wonderful
When there’s too much motivational content or hustle culture things, hygge is like a pill to treat one of the worst diseases - people’s perfectionism
Over the last 5 years I've fallen in love with Scandinavian design. It's simple, natural, thoughtful. Adopting the minimal design has many benefits. Organization for one. Less stress cutting out searching for items. Appreciating what we have. Less clutter in our home, less clutter in our minds. Family oriented spaces, to be mindful of our time spent together, the food we eat, the games we play. This is the first I've heard the term Hygge.
Love it!!
I love how he shaded America in the beginning 😂
it was good to see a family sharing a meal so rare these days i have told my wife when we have children i insist on meals together as often as possible
Being from Quebec, i think facing the same kind of weather and long winter's Hygge is a survival mecanism to face the dark, cold winter !
I am from Iceland and i agree. It gets rough in the cold winters.
Hygge as a Norwegian, was coming inside to my family, drink a cup of warm drink, while a hurrican blizzard howled outside. It's not complicated.
it is called "Gemuetlichkeit" in Germany. It's all over the world, except in America. America has no idea how to live well
It doesn't translate well into the English world~~~ but then again, German has no equivalent for the adjective "fun" haha
Michael-Francis Poliós uhmmm we do but we use fun only in private so people dont pee their pants in public if we yell a joke in our good german aggressive voice 😳
@ Iris everyone knows how to get "gemütlich" comfy or cozy dont be a meany.
> German has no equivalent for the adjective "fun" haha
Eh, there are many.
So true. We have bad versions of many things. It’s hard to find good quality food. I dream of real bread all of the time.
Yeah because all over the world they speak German...
Another wonderful life moment today....
My girlfriend is an assistant director at our hospital here in Northern California...needless to say she can get bogged down by stress from her job quite frequently...well today I opened my UA-cam app and this video popped up so I watched it....and holy crap is this good timing because not only do I think this book will her wonders but her bday is ironically tomorrow!
Heelllloooo Amazon prime!!!!
Funny how some things in life just fall right into place sometimes ❤️❤️❤️
I never knew me & my family live a hygge lifestyle. Such hapinnes feels surreal.
Enjoying family and friends, taking time to relax, play, and be comfortable, sharing meals and each other's company, I love it.
Almost the same as the Dutch word "Gezellig" we have here in the Netherlands. Such a great concept and word which does not exist in English
Tom Siekman Yeah not to be overly biased but Germanic words and languages have a tendency to describe social norms, decency, warmth, togetherness etc very well.. It's something I've noticed with Scandinavian languages (hygge/hygglighet, lagom, fika) and German (gemütlichkeit, gesellschaft).
I experienced Gezellig while in Amsterdam. While I know that Amsterdam isn't the "true" Netherlands to most, as it is a very international city, I still felt very comfortable there.
I feel like Gezellig (Eng.: Cosy) doesn't quite cut it based on the way Hygge is described in the video. It sounds more like they're describing a Bourgondic/Gourmandic way of life (Nl: Bourgondische/Gourmandische levensstijl). This is a way of life typical for the low countries, perhaps even more so in Belgium than in The Netherlands and France (I know, I know, the last isn't technically part of the low countries). This being because Belgium has a traditional Catholic culture with confession as a way of redemption during life, whereas the other two countries are more protestant/calvinistic in their historical culture, where there is no redemption through confession, but an ultimate judgement at the beginning of the afterlife. You could also state that these two countries are more social than the Belgium, more specifically the Flemish region. So I feel like the Dutch nuance of gezellig may be more complete in that case.
Overall, I think gezellig is fitting here due to the whole wooly, wintery theme expressed in the video, and it's still a very fitting word to translate Hygge with in general.
"sociable" just write it in Google translator.
Gezelligheid
I'm a dane and hygge exists in all countries, not just Denmark, and we really shouldn't be proud of it or take credit for it. It's a way to describe more relaxed pleasurable activities or feeling good, that's it.
men vær lige enig, det er da en dejlig ting for os danskere at være associeret med ik
in the u.s our hygge is fast food and racism.
PHISHIT Lmao
accurate lmao
Rofl
USA🇺🇸
Good observations. I would also add "sports to the point of tribalism".
...Why do people in the comments seem to go out of their way to get triggered by even the most mundane of VICE videos??? Is this a joke I'm not in on or something??
From what i grew up with, hygge is just a feeling. You don't need anything special to feel it. It's not a culture or a way of living, it's just a feeling.
Her: "Would you classify Hygge as a lifestyle trend or self help?"
Him: "Neither"
Her: Proceeds to say its a lifestyle anyways in the title of her video lmfao.
Chill Ulek.
This makes total sense in areas of the world where the weather (and also the people) are so cold you actually want to die. If you go to any area around the equator line, where there are beautiful beaches, everything is vibrant and human relations are way more simple, there is no need for this.
Hygge exists in all countries, not just the cold ones, I've experienced it everywhere.
If Denmark was so Cold you could actually die I dont understand why so many Middle Easterns and East Africans all wanna go and live there.
You couldn't ''actually die'' but sometimes it really feels like endless cold and darkness up here.^ They wanna go there because Denmark is a very safe country, where it's really hard to get into extreme poverty without causing it yourself
I spent a Winter in Iowa and that was the coldest winter I ever experienced. Then I heard from Another American that Montana and Minnesota were even colder than Iowa. Denmark is really warm in comparison.
Well... I don't know about that. Ask people of countries in Latin America that don't have cold winter's like Denmark if they are so happy. Think Venezuela... Yes hot/nicer weather affects your mood but if you don't have structure in the rest it does nothing.
Hygge is a soothing, unpretentious feeling.. Feeling grounded, safe, warm, relaxed....... Social security and free education helps a lot, folks 💚
how does Muslims come up in the comment section in a video about comfort food and family bonding at dinner ?
Its because Russian trumpbot
C Steven Diez Alt-Right trolls
Peter Gracia I don't think you know what the alt-right is, because Muslims are definitely not their big thing. XD
C Steven Diez The Americans always have this need to bash other countries when they don't follow the same politics as they do, even if the fact that those countries are doing much better than them is right on their face. They need to feel the world revolves around them, that they know better than anybody, that they are the best country, they would rather live in denial and follow propaganda even if they know it is propaganda, than create an informed opinion by themselves by either listening to people from other countries or visiting those countries. The Americans that talk about a muslim armagedon in Europe, are isolated in their Fox news world, that the world is going to shit and they are the only ones who will survive because they will build a wall and have guns.
Ceez Deetz It’s in our culture. To eat comfort-home made food with your family. We all eat together at the same time in the same Place. It’s our thing. Google it if u want.
This guy keeps changing the definition... It's comfort. Coziness. Things that bring that warm, fuzzy feeling. It's not sinful pleasures.
If Americans would stop spending their life pursuing $$$ and start pursuing hygge (or anything else really), they would be happier instantly.
callyman thinks hygge isnt manly lmao a lifestyle from people who have descended from Vikings
Maybe if Americans didn't have so much debt, they could be happy....
(the majority of college grads will see themselves in $50k+ of debt, alongside car loans, rent/mortgage...it's work or die)
I've tried to get better jobs and can't and the job I have now I have to work 55 hours a week just to make a modest living. I'm not after money I'm after existing.
the fleece and beanies don't grow on trees yo
Maybe if I had health insurance again, had more than two minimum wage jobs, and wasn't swamped with student loan debt then I might be more inclined to pursue such pleasures.
I love Denmark after spending several vacations there many years ago. Great country, worth living there.
The fact that americans think they are free is hilarious.
I’m American and I agree
Big mood
Simon Delaney hahahaa
it's actually incredibly sad.
Eric Petrovich now we got Russian bots on the tread 😂😂😂
I came to know about this concept today and i am already in love with it.....
Me too! Ironically, I'm an American who's pretty great at hygge, the only difference from the Dutch is I feel super guilty about it! And many of my American friends have shamed me for hygge, saying I'm not working enough. When I've worked my whole life. So now when I hyyge, I still feel like I should be working. It's the most insane thing in the world! I will not let it get the best of my hyyge! Hyyge=healing!
Hygge might be a danish concept, but many countries have similar moments of simple pleasures amongst family and friends. It's what makes life worth living and I feel sorry for people who never take the time to do this.
I believe the most important aspect of the "happiness" experienced by Scandinavians is based on the social reforms that have been made throughout the last 100+ years
Social reforms!! Total Anathema to Yanks. Gun Laws and bigotry come first, oh and stoking middle east conflict.
It's interesting growing up in Scandinavia, hygge is not something you really reflect upon. It's just a part of what you do and how you arrange your life. I had a danish grandmother so there was a lot of hygge in our family, but it was not until I became an adult that this really was a concept on its own..
Man,i've been doing this hygge thing since the 80s without even knowing there's a word for it
Yes, because it’s called human nature. Danes think just because they gave it a name that they invented the concept of being in cozy environments. What a joke!
In Asian countries, families eat together every day and that is considered normal. It is not an event which people glorify. It's a normal way of life. With all due respect, I find it quite weird as to why this is getting so much attention.
What's wrong with you guys? Why all the negative comments? This is a concept/term that is a huge part of our culture, and it's something we're extremely proud of. This is a video sharing a thing that we're proud of to the world - if you don't like, please move on.
However, me as a dane, would define hygge as a word for all the unexplainable nice things you experience in your everyday life. Whenever you need a word for something nice, you can use hygge. When that being said, I don't think that we have monopoly on hygge, we just got a word for it.
We do that in France, its called lunch and dinner ^^
Lol
that girl talking about how eating dinner without phones is so special smh, been in that game for years, made me an animal . but her dad i felt touched on it perfectly
Never heard of it. I don't need a book to know that being "cozy", comfortable, well-fed, etc. are things that make me happy.
This is why Vice is fuckin garbage for the last 2 years atleast.
I love Vice ♥ there's so much to know about the world & I live these little investigations into some of those things that don't get a doco style interrogation of them
Damn...
Its not that difficult.
"Hygge" is just a slow paced good time. That is all.
Watching the sea with or without someone. Watching a movie while eating snacks... With or without someone. Its just having a good relaxing time.
Pretty sure all cultures have the same thing... Us Danes just have a single universal word for such a situation.
Making a book about it or calling it a lifestyle is putting waaay too much into it ;)
Hygge is a feeling of bliss its a feeling of cozyness its a feeling of u own the universe and u control it. it is everything and every feeling u can´t replikate it u can´t force u can only experince it and u cannot force it or buy it let me tell u a story about hygge.. (u have a drout no Water and u plant a pea plant the feeling of planting it is a start, then the rain come and u see the plant grow then u get a better feeling and now u start to understand hygge, but then the plant die and it is all gone. After some time the plant gives u the best peas of the World and u share em with everyone u love thats hygge)
"At a certain point, additional income does not lead to improved quality of life."
That's a very bold and true statement.
A guy named “Mike Wiking “. while talking about Hygge this is just perfect!
if some one invites u for a HYGGE evening its gonna be a good evening! the world needs more hygge =)
Your positive energy makes me want to take better care of myself!
in the netherlands we call hygge 'gezellig'
it's strange to me that very few languages have a translation for it, seeing as it's such a normal but important word here
I hygged my way through 2 lebkuchen and a ginger beer before bed. Life is good. Happy Holidays to everyone.
Bernie would have won.
Eric Petrovich let's be honest...all of the main candidates were shit. :(
I hope he run as an independent next year. I would register from unpartisan to independent.
Agree! If I were a registered Democrat, I would be so angry with the DNC for rigging their primaries 2016 to go with Hilary on the ballet & against Bernie
Dont make the same mistake twice then americans!
I don't know, you might underestimate how dumb this country really is.
Should I move to Denmark?
seems like they are pretty much describing the concept of chill. maybe less associated with drugs and more family friendly
As an alcoholic I've tried 'Hygge' living and it's ok as long as you don't run out of liquor. But there is that moment when your friends and family come into your 'Hygge' and tell you it's time for a shower and maybe even rehab.
"Hygge" is also good for heroin addicts and then there's that moment when your friends and family come into your 'Hygge' and tell you it's time for a shower and maybe even rehab.
It helps to be really rich in your 'Hygge' so you don't have to go outside and you can smoke lots of weed that's been delivered. But there is that moment when your friends and family come into your 'Hygge' and tell you it's time for a shower and maybe even rehab.
Omg when he said Bernie sanders 😂👍🏽
So it's about family bonding and comfort. Nice. It's important to gather with close relatives after a hard day at work. Most people go to their room alone and get on the net. This thing is important for emotional balance.
He is incredibly attractive. And I can fully attest that Americans are happier than the Finnish who are like number 5 On the list. At least in the south.
not true.. I'm Finnish people here are very happy
You know what, I went back and looked at the Happiness study and I see that it is almost entirely economic, I think I was talking less About satisfaction in livelihood and more about social behavior. In which case I doubt that you would disagree that Finnish people are notoriously cold. You may have some internal satisfaction but that doesnt mean you will ....smile. I think Philipinos are the happiest people I have ever met, I have met many and I havent met one who was not upbeat and optimistic but their economic situation would never reflect it.
oh please... you're not finnish so you have no idea.. i am from here i know. People here are really happy. Looking at stereotypes that we are alcoholic and thinking its true is idiotic, when i see that we are fifth i can absolutely believe it. Majority of people in finland don't have real problems, we live very relaxed life. I can not say about philippines as i am not a filipino, same way you shouldn't analyze finns as you're not one... ok?
also it's a difference in culture... me personally i dont smile when i am out in the public but i am very smily when i am with my family and friends, and a lot of inns are the same way.. dont critize when you dont know
The 'happiest country' thing is all cultural comparison, so its people comparing and analyzing societies they are not a part of, if people should not do that then the whole conversation is irrelevant. I was not making criticisms, only observations from my life. I also didn't mention alcoholism (although I did see a lot of it when I was living in Finland, I just didnt think it mattered in the conversation) so I do not know why you brought it up. But I do not think there is any problem comparing characteristics of different cultures. People can have opinions about whatever they want. But I will repeat that I thought the study had been about happiness in demeanor, like atittude and personaility which had influenced my original opinion. Dont take it as criticism, I did not mean to insult you, it was pretty much just a random thought, not an attack on your culture.
Biggest reason for being at the top consistently. Free healthcare as in 100% that means if you feel sick or get injured you don't stress about the bill that in some cases in the US hit hundreds of thousands or even millions just for one person. Next one is right to a home, if you are "homeless" you can get shelter instantly, there are rules that say "anyone has a right to a roof over their head" and not only that, they also give you money to live for and help find work if you don't have work.
School is free, you can apply for any college and it won't cost a penny, if you are over 18 you even get paid monthly just for going to school, and if you live alone you will get even more.
All the things people worry about in life, we don't. We choose to remove as many worries as possible, as said money only helps to a point, many millionaires have taken their own life.
I wish life be that easy here in Brazil, selling most of my days as a vendor for a multinational. Even on the email they make clear that I am not one of them. Diego Rodrigues *VENDOR* (dont treat him with respect)
That’s sad
I can see why Hygge makes Danes happy, because they are more focused on valueing relationships and intimacy with their families, friends and fellow humans. 😊
"Denmark is what the US would look like is Bernie Sanders was President." - THIS IS WHY MILLENNIAL WANT BERNIE SANDERS AS PRESIDENT! We want the happiness, 'relative' stability in our country like the Danes have in Denmark and REAL equality not the current 'free market' equality.
You should have a look at this article - www.forbes.com/sites/jeffreydorfman/2018/07/08/sorry-bernie-bros-but-nordic-countries-are-not-socialist/?fbclid=IwAR2yq5NLW6gfEb7OWN-wUl2QYgWIqMz966Vf928zDDpt99cfjN-iC7lcRj8#2696dfef74ad
Bernie Sanders is asking for socialism, countries like Denmark are free market capitalist economies.
Your so dumb. Lol.
You mean you want other people to pay for all your needs so you can be happy. Got it.
not just millennials ima baby baby boomerI love living this Way!
Hey God, you see this shit?
this is everyday...very easy. Just chill. it's people and their minds that make life hard, it could be easy.
sorry for my english i am not english speaker.
if free health care and free college are the reason why denemark is happier then the us then why the us is number 13 which is before most of the countries in europe for example germany is considerd a rich social democracy with happy people but still the us is happier.
the us is huge, rich and made out of many cultures not like denemark.
the stuff which makes a country happy in my opinion are stuff like democracy, freedom, money, safety and a happy colture and the danish have it all.
amit dayan because free healthcare and college doesn't automatically mean happiness. I don't get why he had to bring politics and stuff into this, it has nothing to do with it.
brynja I disagree, it may not make happier wealthy people who doesn't have money problems and don't care paying for it, but I think most of the people will be happier. Working people who don't longer have to worry about losing everything if they get sick, and people who didn't have the same life oportunities, that now have a chance to study and have a better quality of life because of their efforts. In Denmark you're even pay to study, its not free they PAY YOU.
As a dane, the best way I would explain "hygge" is this:
If the activity is "exciting", then it's "fun", but if it's "relaxing" then it's "hyggeligt" (hygge-like).
Going to an amusement park and trying a dangerous rollercoaster is "fun", while going to a cafe and drinking hot chocolate is "hyggeligt".
Now I wish Bernie was still in the elections
The yanks don't deserve Bernie Saunders. They do deserve Trump.
Its a way of life that makes you enjoy and take a closer look on the little things in life, we dont need too much, we just need the right thing and the right people to maje a more confortable enviroment for ourselves.
Watched this video and had no idea what Hygge was. I'm even more confused at the end of the video.
comfort food and good company i guess
I'm confused too. I imagine something like hipster cozy.. either way I like it.
In Denmark we can say "det her er hyggeligt" which might be translated to "this is cozy (the closest word to hygge)". It's like an atmosphere.
I don't get the trend. It's just a Danish word for a certain nice, lovely and warm atmosphere. As I said, cozy is almost the same.
The meaning very much depends on the person saying it.
Basically think of that sort of homey, cozy, winterish vibe. That's the gist.
Yeah, but we also use hygge in the summer time...
Never realised I was into hygge my whole life .. wooo
Scandinavia = Denmark confirmed
All the Scandinavian countries are basically the same, dude.
Eh no, it's like saying Canadians and Americans are the same
Not really to be honest.
They are the same, but norway is more hyggelig than denmark. From a guy who has lived both places.
Back in the day it was ;)
I think (as a Canadian) if you have to explain Hygge to someone then you don't get it. We have Hygge in Canada too. I guess we just don't have a name for it. We plan for winter. All those things you want to do, but you don't have time for. Knitting, playing that video game you've been looking forward to. Gluttonous baking. It's just the art of surviving winter by looking forward to the things only winter can offer. Plus I think Hygge means just being comfortable with not doing anything/moving forward. A lovely term that doesn't really even need explaining, especially to people that go through hard winters.
any dutchies here? Hygge Sounds a lot like the word "gezellig" in Dutch. Is it the Same thing?
Called "adda" in west bengal.... bengalis love having addas, can be at any time of the day, having teas and deep fried snacks... hours of rambunctious discourses, discussions, arguments, scoffing snacks. Very addictive.
Everyday i find new reasons to pursue somewhere other than the US.
Chase internal happiness my friends.
Inner joy >>> materialism
I love this way of living, I enjoy being at my bed with my two cats in winter, eating something sweet and watching good programs. I do not think eating a fair quantity of sugar will damage your health. You can go for a walk, drink a lot water and stop drinking a lot of alcohol. But sadly, I have to say that this kind of phylosophy is easier to be practised in countries which are more developed, where you do not have to worry about delinquency or rude people. Keep the levels of cortisol low is the most important thing for our health 🐾🐾
send this dude to the south side or chicago to introduce some coziness. see how that goes
As a man from one very big country, I think that Scandinavian countries are the best in the world.
Fine, as a Dane I'll say, at least they did theirs to balance the usual hype arround this term. As Claus touches on 'hygge' is most definitely not an exclusively Scandinavian tradition - far from it really, if you ask me. Then again I do agree there is something to the way this word is in many both small and big ways an essential part of the Danish mentality. Furthermore seeing Vice spreading the word on Denmark's succes as a social-democratic nation akin to what The US would very likely become (or at least move towards) under Bernie Sanders is highly agreeable! Power to the people!
