I suppose you understand why this song has been used during lectures at uni haha. You're definitely on the right track, but there's sooo much more hidden in this song/mv. I love the explanation video by Dont Worry I'm Not Afraid ( ua-cam.com/video/5tlgAUE6yjg/v-deo.html ). Fellow reactor Cedric Gegel actually did a great job breaking it down too, though he did it twice - first time for the more "apparent" meaning, and second time for the underlying meanings from the BU.
10:25 A note about the organ music you might find interesting/relevant: The piece that is heard is Buxtehude's, "Passacaglia in D minor," which is also the piece that Emil hears in the Pistorius section of the novel.* * All credit goes to ReactToTheK (specifically Yunyi), for figuring that out & tracking down the reference. ua-cam.com/video/K3XtBF_qX0o/v-deo.html I can't recommend Umu's ReactToTheK channel highly enough - she gets her fellow classical musicians to react to & analyze Korean Idol music through the lens of their expertise.
I loved your reaction to this, you guys managed to pick up on a lot of stuff, you really have hawk eyes :D This is part of the BU universe, please also react to the Japanese version of the Blood, sweat and tears MV, it's just as interesting :)
You two are one of the few reactors that didn't make this song about a romantic relationship. Obviously these lyrics can be interpreted many different ways but for some reason most ppl default to love. I'm so glad you all made the association with chasing fame as a possible meaning behind the lyrics.
I am literally shocked and amazed how quickly you managed to decipher the whole song along with the visual representation. I have watched many explanation videos I, however, I have always struggled to understand the meaning behind the songs and MVs, and the BU. Thank you for giving me a whole new intrepretation which gives me a whole new perspective. This one is a really special one for me because it's the one that drew me into BTS and todays it is the video I have been mostly fascinated by. You are amazing!
You guys are like me. When I watch videos or listen to music, I like to unpack them. And when I do, I'm either entertained or disappointed. It's probably the academic in me. But when I watched BTS's Spring Day MV, I was moved and I started crying because I was so familiar with all the references and the tragic ferry incident many years back which, as a Mom, broke my heart just watching the news and the stories. I said to myself that this isn't just a "boyband". This group tells a story, a deep one. It was the one that hooked me in and got me into the rabbit hole. I'm a Dynamite Army, so very new to BTS just like you. And now I have heaps of their songs on my playlist, my first ever for solely one musician/band.
I agree, thank you for sharing! I actually usually have a hard time liking new music because I tend to think about it too critically, so I completely understand. Haven't had that problem with BTS yet!
You know..the moment you watch their mv in orders,,the more you realise things hshshshsh also I'm loving you guys contrast! Andrew talk in music while Caitlin talk about the story and honestly,I love itt! *learn new things~ Also,I'm really getting excited when Caitlin spot little details in the mv bcs it feels like I'm with my friend being excited and all hshshshs Let's go,,to Bangtan Universe,,we'll enter a world where we try to patch things form here and there together and do theories~ *there's many Army uncovered and apparently it's true and some we're being clowns 🤡 (it's fun!) But still,HYYH & Highlight reels..ahh I love it ( all these theories) bcs the story begin since they're young until enter the adult life. (so many topic they cover by their songs) There are songs that are not link with BU and most of it are. Anyway,it's 3 in the morning here and thank you for the great video~ *apologise for my bad English bcs as you can see,it is not my first language. Alsooo, gonna download discord real quick and join you guys bcs I def don't want to miss any live reaction vid to run bts/in the soop/bon voyage and all bcs you can see their personality there (couldn't wait hshshshsh)
Thank you so much! That's the exact contrast we want there to be 😊 And we will dive into the BU at some point, but probably not for a little while I think! Glad to have you join the Discord!
Oh I was waiting for your reaction! You picked up so much. A few other things: Jimin was also holding an apple when he was kneeling in front of Yoongi (who was holding a blind fold). When rm was passed out on the bed, Jungkook was on the other bed. Each of the younger members are paired with an older ( Jin is separate) Hobi and V don’t have as much interaction but Hobi shoots v with the arrow and there is a splash of “rainbow” blood. Green is a colour that repeats and I think it represents sin/poison/temptation. Jk tastes the drip of green wax, Jimin weeps green tears, rm drinks a green drink and exhales the green smoke. Also the paintings in the MV are important. The painting which Jin looks at at the beginning is “the fall of the rebel angels” biblical, good v evil and v is representing a fallen angel shown by his fall from the balcony and his wing stumps. The picture behind Jungkook when he is levitating/on the swing is the fall of icarus which is another temptation and consequence story. Also there are feathers floating around jk when he levitates. There is more but I can’t recall just now.
Thankyou!. Your comment just told me a whole bunch of things I hadn't realised before, like younger members paired with an elder. There is just so much in this MV it is an amazing masterpiece. 💜😄
JK on the bed always looks like one of those iconic "young boy/man after his first visit to an opium den/brothel" scenes, he's debauched and blissed out and it's one of those big "transitional moments" from the innocence of childhood to adulthood - that's how I've always read that scene, although I've never heard anyone else mention it.
I'm really impressed by your eye for details. There're sooo many of them in this one. It's really one of those "requires-an-explanation-video" videos (there're several of them on UA-cam) because *nothing* in it is coincidental. These are just a few details: - The members are paired with a younger and an older member (student/teacher) - A bike and sling-shot to symbolize childhood or innocence - Jin is looking at Bruegel's painting The Fall Of The Rebel Angels - RM's drinking the halucinogenic Absinth which symbolizes creativity, liberation, madness and despair - Above the mirror is a quote by Nietzche: "Mann muss noch chaos in sich haben um einen tanzenden stern gebähren zu können" = You must have chaos within you to give birth to a dancing star - In the first "chandelier-room" behind Suga is the painting The Lament Of Icarus by Draper - V jumps into the painting The Fall Of Icarus by Bruegel - Suga plays Buxtehude Passacaglia on the organ which is what Pistorius plays for Sinclair in the book Even all the statues have names connected with good and evil! Hermann Hesse was a patient of swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung and Demian is heavily influenced by his theories - like his Map Of The Soul - as are BTS's Map Of The Soul albums. There's also a Bangtan Bomb of the making of it.
The German quote on top of the mirror where Jin sees his reflection and his face start to break : "You must have chaos within you to give birth to a dancing star." - A quote from Nietzsche
So there is so much crammed into this video it is crazy. There are paintings on the walls, reading of the book, drinks of amethyst, breaking the shells to become a new, writing in different languages, doors....there are a couple of explains bookish theories is good most people watch xceleste.
It's sooo nice to watch a reaction from someone who has actually read and understood the book because you two has so much more insight into the story this mv/song was trying to tell. Love your reaction! .. Reminds me that I should still read the book myself 🤭.
You both are amazing...I never noticed Jimin holding that Apple and I've watched this MV like 100 times. You really caught on so many things fast and it just shows how you genuinely love music and want to understand it. My brain cells can't manage this MV till now so I'll definitely have to read the book. Love you both and keep going deep into the rabbit hole just like me 💜
And this is why BTS videos have high rewatch rates -- you were able to catch some details which some haven't caught despite having watched the MV many times :)
So I e watched over a dozen reactions to this and Catlyn caught things even high end breakdowns havent like the room lighting etc. It’s a masterpiece of Easter eggs on the theme of light and dark with temptation.
AAahhhhh finally Blood Sweat & Tears!!!! I'm so happy you get to experience this masterpiece (and my personal rabbit hole) 😁 First: I recognize the Wings-Era Bunny from discord right there!!! wow! 😁 I really appreciate the fact that you both put in the work and actually researched Demian in advance for this song reaction. Thank you for that! It really shows throughout the video with your comments, as well, how you can connect so many different aspects. All the light/dark, good/evil, white/black, and similar contrasts are all over the MV. Chasing after your dreams, and all the costs you're willing to take for that (or not)... The forbidden fruit / temptation, Yes to all of it. There's so much in the video and in the song, all over the place. This song/album was really them putting the school concepts and (innocent) youth behind. OMG, I wrote this comment on my notepad just before Andrew said "innocence is gone now" at 7:04 (on my third rewatch? I keep getting distracted by discord and have to rewind 😉...). See, you both are so on point!!!! 😁 I also love your discussion of downbeat vs upbeat contrast and how that also plays into the same theme of it (as well as the harmony interval later on). I've never really paid that much attention to it before, it just gave me a certain kind of feeling. And you now perfectly explained why. The ending of the MV... yeah... 😜 But also, if you want to watch the japanese version (in your own time), that one will start on the level of the ending of this one, and only get more feverish/trippy 🤪... so be warned. Loss of innocence, cracks (the flower in the mirror is a different one that what's standing in front of the mirror), the price you pay, once again, yes yes yes! Reactions to this MV are usually quite the trip, just because of how the MV is done. But since you two already came prepared (and ready to play, not only BigHit 😉 ) it was even more intense that usual. And while I already knew a LOT of the details in this one (for obvious reasons), you still managed to pick out some details (mostly on the music side of things) that I had not really paid that much attention to before. So thank you for that, and hats off to both of you. 🥕 CFA
Thank you so much, Conny! This was the coolest MV so far and the details were amazing! I appreciate your comment once again, it's nice to know we were on the right track 😀
Yes. This is PURE ART. The depth and the layers and the complexity in meanings. How they could brilliantly pack it all in and express it so effectively and beautifully in 6 min never stops to baffle and amaze me.
Great reaction! It definitely plays into Demian (the whole album, Wings, is based off of it actually!), but it also has elements from the BU! So it’s extra cool because you can have multiple theories based purely off of Demian, the BU, or both!💜
One of my favorites! Their MV are such masterpieces! Watching this live was, wow! D1/D2! Also, no one minds if you stop, talk, rewind...any of the things! There is always -so- much going on in the videos, we are happy to see you catch things and know the effort they and their team go for their productions! Loving joining you guys on your journey! I'm a fairly new ARMY, and a decidedly not teen one (48), but am so happy I found them (they found me?) I feel like it's true-you find BTS when you need them, and these last couple years have been rough for a multitude of reasons both personal (parental death) and *gestures at everything* reasons; and their music, joyful souls, and ARMY community have really helped me. With the world we live in, getting to be part of the SoFi concerts was a bright, special, healing moment for so many. (And we did it safely! No known Covid cases assoc!! 👍😷) Those moments in time shared by BTS and ARMY may become even more precious as Covid surges again. I have hope, but have a lot of worry...whatever happens though, I know I have BTS and ARMY to go through it with, and that alone gives me hope. Along with having a Sr in HS, him and his friends give me that too, the kids are (despite everything) doing alright! 💜 -Kara
"I'm sorry we're pausing so much" don't apologise! We love when reactors notice things, especially when enjoying the content and you've done so well at spotting things Caitlin! 👏🏻
I was just about to leave the house when I saw this thumbnail pop up. Heard myself say "oh, boy!" in tiny. A first for me. Needless to say here I stay.
Wooo I am glad you finally listened to my all time favourite BTS song! It's amazing how many things you picked up! I am amazed how many references you picked up on first watch! Caitlin you are a genius! As always, amazing reaction guys!
Love, love, love your reactions to this. 😘 Yes it is Bach, Mass in B minor. The statue on the left is David and Goliath. He is holding his head. The painting in the beginning is The Fall of the Rebel Angels by Breugel the Elder. RM has absinthe. I am trying to leave things up to your own interpretation and just telling you what it is 🤣 💜
You guys caught so much! Very impressive 🙂 you are correct about the book and Bach 💜 at its core it is a coming of age story. All of us have good and evil in us. We can’t mature and grow up till we accept both sides of ourselves. Jin is the oldest so he is the first to start the journey. Once you start down the path of discovery you can’t go back and you are changing into your true self, thus breaking out of the shell as depicted at the end with the cracks on Jin’s face. 💜 there are more details if you are interested in the explanation video. You guys do a great job! Borahae 💜💜
11:17 btw this part yoongi was originally supposed to do these scenes with jin . Hahaha u can check it out in the behind of the scene ua-cam.com/video/s0iIR4TY2pY/v-deo.html . There's a Japanese version too if you are interested
i loved this reaction so much!!! i feel like i understand the mv better than ever now, somehow i never picked up on the "it's about fame!" interpretation but it makes perfect sense
This songs dance practice is my fav of all the bts dances, also this song and MV has so many hidden gems and meanings that you have to re watch it over a hundred times, i keep finding something new even after a million times watching it. Also this song has a sensual feeling aswell and j love my Jiminies vocals in it
Oh How I love you guys reactions! Fyi, after a few hard years, they were just starting to blow up in Korea at the time (2015), which led me to think that this song mainly refers to their desire and temptation they "had to" to face more and more.
We have to make countless choices throughout our lives. Evil will be like sweet chocolate. That's the devil's wing...Whatever you choose at the crossroads between the choice of good and evil, it is me and myself who choose it. BTS tells this story in a song, especially so that young people can conflict and grow up. Your expressions are so cool. You looked so happy while watching the music video. Thank you for reaction this song, 감사합니다,Gamsahapmida.
Another great reaction! I love the amount of details that you both caught. So many of us miss during our first watch. There were even some more contrasts that you all noted that were new to me and this is after me watching this video a ridiculous amount of times and being ARMY for about 5yrs now. As a couple who have also read Demian, I also recommend adding the Wings short films to your list to watch in order and Caitlin definitely should join in all of these. Also recommend watching I need you before doing those however, to help understand the Bangtan Universe details in each as well. Like others have mentioned, I believe that following the BU in order would be amazing for the both of you since you love finding the minute details. It can get confusing but oh is it fun to dive in. Thanks again for being so genuine and amazing! Just joined the discord and I am excited to continue following you both.
So happy that Caitlin saw the apple. There was also a single apple on each plate in the “Last Supper” scene as well and I was hoping one of you would catch it. Great reaction!
Guys, you spotted the most important parts good job! The song and video are all about temptation and the loss of innocence. It is also part of the storyline universe so there might be a few references to that that you won't understand but that's ok
This is one of my favorite music videos. The elaborate decadence is so beautiful. I didn't pick up on nearly as much as the two of you did. I always thought it was about temptation and that somehow by giving into their temptations, they could possibly be more successful or they could just lose it all. I love your reactions!
You both did a great reaction to a great mv. More than 50 representations of art history, classical music, literature, philosophy and psychology. The dark sculpture in the doorway seems to Perseus holding the head of Medusa. JK transitioning from the swing to an backbreaking levitation seems influenced by Louise Bourgeois sculpture Arch of Hysteria. Throw in the Pieta, and RM 's Absinthe , what's not to love? Stay well
Hi Andrew and Kaitlyn 👋 Thank you for your reaction. I really enjoy your content. 😁 I love this masterpiece of an MV and the song. It is such a work of art. As others have said you picked up on and pointed out things I or other reactors I have watched havnt noticed before. Everyone seems to pick up different things which is the beauty of this MV. I loved that you explained specific references from the book like the organ player as I've never heard that before.. I definetly need to read the book. 💜🎵
I love you guys so much for pointing out the lights and the shadows, the paintings, the lyrics, the Demian book reference, etc. I was fangirling along with you guys Haha
I love your reaction! BS&T is a a special song to me because, well, it's amazing. But also because I was named after the book. Only since I was a girl, my Mom gave me the feminine spelling. Damian. When my favorite group came out with a song inspired by the book, I was overwhelmed. And hearing Namjoon say my name in interviews is squee worthy! Lol I love your observations about the theme. I have seen interviews where they talk about the song & MV. It's about the loss of innocence. Becoming adults by experiencing everything. Sex, drugs, alcohol etc. Namjoon is smoking (weed I think) and drinking absinthe. Yoongi & Jimin are doing S&M, Jungkook is in a bed, flirting with us, they blatently grab their crotch in the choriography, it's overtly sexual & they all willingly drink together from their silver cups all that life has to offer, the good, the bad & the naughty. Because experiences make us who we are & will be. Also I think Jin's face cracks at the end to signify that he should enjoy life now because even Jin's all too perfect beauty will one day fade. Probably a huge fear for him because it's such a huge part of his persona. Being the "visual" of BTS.
Wow, that's so interesting that you were named after the book! I can't imagine how awesome it would be for you when you first heard the song. Thanks for all the extra info!!
Yay!! So excited to see both of you react to this, it’s an awesome song and the mv is really complex, the symbolism is insane…Plus, it’s gotta be said, all seven are so beautiful here 🤷♂️😂💜💜 I’ll edit as I watch (it’s a habit, sorry 😞) You both did really well picking up on the symbolism (I know you are both very creative, so it’s not surprising) - there are some excellent explanation videos on YT if you want to delve deeper. The dance practice video is fascinating too, the choreo is brilliant, and you can see it all so clearly…
This mv is their masterpiece. There is so much symbolism and hidden details to this! In my opinion, nothing can touch this. Saying this, I do have to clarify, I do not put Spring Day in the same category as this. Spring Day is a memorial piece, never to be compared to any other. But this is a very deep, mysterious, work of art. Also, a few years ago, I dove in deep on this. There was just so much, and I knew every tiny detail had meaning. I researched the pieces of art used in the video, such as the art in the background when Tae slid off the balcony; the picture that had Jin mystified, and how the picture changed , later in the video, instead, there was a mirror, with a quote on the wall, between the two doorways-one being white, and the other being black. This is an amazing video. Dig in, you won’t be sorry ! Be prepared to be amazed ! Loved your reaction !
What a nice analysis and reaction to this video! You appreciate all the details and have knowledge to support this. The truth is that the more knowledge the more the beauty of the expressions of this world is appreciated. Thanks for sharing what you know. And to BTS, the talent of its members and its great production team, some number one in the world without a doubt! (I used a translator because I don't speak English, I only understand it, Sorry)
I've begun to hate when most reactors pause every 3 seconds to talk about a video BUT you guys tall about the songs and videos in such a different deeper way that I actually love how often you pause and discuss the guys art. Keep up the great videos, I can't wait to watch more of your journey.
If you would like you guys can also check out “blood sweat and tears what does it all mean” its a great analysis on the mv! You guys can check offline too!
Yes! This is the reaction I've been waiting for for a while now. Thank you for always delivering!!! You guys saw a lot for first time reactors to this MV, and there were actually still a lot to unpack! I am so excited to hear about your plans on watching other content like Run BTS, ITS and the BV series! 😊 I always like watching your videos, so more power to you both.
I don't know why but everytime I watch these couple I'm always amazed how they look at each other while the other is talking..they really looked so in love..by the way, love your reactions guys..love from Philippines..can't wait for more BTS reactions
Great job you guys! I think putting this with a backdrop of the pursuit of fame really centers it. There are larger themes, but none feel quite as perfect to me.
Also, I am going to watch your reactions again because you two caught so many things that I never noticed before after watching this video many, many times!
i love your reaction. hope you can watch the explanation for this too. even on your private time.. BST is one of the best songs! im gonna jpin your discord .
Loved your reaction!! You pointed out things I had missed. I really hope y’all will react to the Wings short films 1-7. Please. They kind of relate to this.
You guys are really good! I didn't catch a lot of the things you pointed out! Also side comment, I love your lipstick :D And I love the way Caitlin is Andrew's hypeman (woman?) and makes enthusiastic expressions when he speaks lol
Caitlin - I need to know what you write! I want to be your cool aunt. Also a writer who ended up here due to a love of BTS and appreciation of a musician’s opinion. I chose the self pub route. Also, your analysis reminded me of my years as a Lit major. 🙂
Thank you! If you follow her on Twitter @caitlincross she has talked about it there. Basically she writes Adult Contemporary Fiction. She is currently on submission for a book she wrote that follows an up-and-coming Rockstar and his "muse". If you've seen the movie Almost Famous, it has a similar vibe to that!
Thank you for helping me see things I’d missed. Makes me like this video even more.😁 While I marveled at the clothes and the music and dance you were dissecting all the hidden meanings and references, smart cookies!!
Yay! I knew I could trust you both! You practically nailed it, from the theme of the MV and the theme of the song, to smaller details (black and white, light and shadow, also green being the color of envy/temptation/corruptness) You missed just 1 thing, a German quote on top of the mirror. Nietzche: Man muss noch Chaos in sich haben, um einen tanzenden Stern gebären zu können. (One must have chaos within oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star. -- literal order so you catch up on the words) Let me paste the meaning, though obvious (imo): By “chaos”, Nietzsche is referencing an inherent discontent that reinforces the drive of “self-overcoming” and “becoming”. You need to have something (feel) unsettled within you, to look for settlement or arrangement of the pieces that conform you. I hope that makes sense :D I can't wait to see you falling down the BU hole, now that we've secured you on the rabbit one :P Not sure if I'll be able to join the discord (I don't even know how those work, but a lot of people use them!), but I'll do my best to see you there! Take care! PS. BTS/BigHit are killing us with content these 2 vacation weeks T-T As a heads-up, they are delving into a new universe/story (although related to the BU from what they said) named Chakho, 7 fates: it'll consist primarily on a comic and a story (available in webtoon and wattpad respectively), but also it will be included in some upcoming MVs (iiiiiiiih): today they released a teaser (30min) and yesterday some interview-excerpts and there is a couple more teaser-trailer videos. If you don't know yet, here: ua-cam.com/channels/WAQUQFOtYRndsDxJLe5VWA.html
Thank you so much for all of this detail, it's really interesting! And I'm really interested in the new series, but since it connects to the BU, I'll probably wait for now!
@@AndrewBergSax Yay! They said so, but I am not sure how deep it'll be or just tangentially. The trailers are a bit standalone afaik/saw if you are curious about the theme. Seems there'll be another presentation in a big place in Seoul on Jan 1st. There is speculation about this universe and the other 2 created for TXT (same company) and Enhypen (1/2 same mother company xD) and the new girl group that's supposed to debut next year @_@
Yay, another great reaction. You caught so many things including some I have never paid attention to like the devil and angel statues and the apple. Like wow!
I saw this comment on another 'Blood, Sweat & Tears' reaction and had to share it. It's the best explanation I've seen for the mv. This is their theory, I won't take credit for other peoples work. Haura Emilia Blood Sweat and Tears video and song were built and written based on Demian, a novel by Hermann Hesse which won a Nobel prize in literature back in 1946. I read this book (because of this Mv) and I'll try my best to interpret and summarize the story here. The story follows a young boy named Sinclair who had a friend named Demian. Demian acted as Sinclair's mentor during his childhood and transition to adulthood. Sinclair as a young adult experienced series of existential crisis, believing he lived in between the world of light (the world of illusion, full of goodness) and "the dark world" (the real world which was full of lust, temptation, anger and evil world). Demian, and later on Sinclair's another mentor Pistorius, believed that in order to become a full person a human needs to embrace both of their light and dark sides. This will then lead Sinclair to find out about Abraxas, the god of light and darkness. There are sooo many imageries and jawdropping details on the MV that represent details in the book. But the point is this song is about the loss of innocence and temptation, about being a human and embracing both of your good and dark sides. The scene where Jin kissed the statue (which I believe the representation of Abraxas) means he seals the deal with the devil himself in order to fully embrace himself as a person who isn't perfect, full of flaws. The white and black doors represent the world of light and the real world. Suga playing piano represents Pistorius who was an organ player in the story. The phrase that RM read in English here was also taken from the book, page 26 (on the version that I read). It says "He too was a tempter, he too was a link to the second, the evil world with which I no longer have anything to do." "He" here refers to Demian, that Sinclair once thought as a bad influence for him, maybe it's because Sinclair tried to deny his dark sides. The book is heavily influenced by a swiss philosopher and psychiatrist Carl Jung. One of his pupils was Hermann Hesse's doctor back then. This MV and song are also influenced by a german philosopher Nietzche. There's a quote by him on the wall above the painting that Jin is staring at. It is in German but it means "You must have chaos within you in order to give a birth to a dancing star". Again, the same theme occurs here, about embracing both of your light and dark sides. Only by accepting your flaws and mistakes you can reach your true potentials. Hesse learned a lot about Jung's psychoanalysis and experienced it himself so that was why Demian was heavily influenced by it. What makes it even more interesting, BTS album MOTS 7 is also based on Carl Jung's theory (hence the songs Persona, Shadow, and Ego were born-- these 3 elements are important in Jung's theory Maps of the Soul). BTS are deep, my friends. They talk about real things like the pain of growing up and youth's experience. They literally make a lot of armys become smarter and read on classic literature like this because of them. lol. Welcome to the fandom! (Please note once again that this is all my own interpretation after reading the book, take it with a grain of salt.) The last comment was because the reactors are new to BTS. They're Baby ARMY, so there's still a lot they don't know.
see this why i am subscribe here, the way andrew dissect the music for us coz im always curious why we love these songs, and i like to understand that its not just because we love BTS but because the intricasy of how they create this songs, the dance step and the MV is like a whole piece of a puzzle that fits perfectly. well i have no idea about upbeat and downbeat. and now i do! yay! you guys should also watch the parody of Blood, Sweet and Tears done by BTS, that one was hilarious! kinda even out the heavyness of this one.
Gracias por reaccionar a BS&T. Los Short films Beggin, Lie, Stigma, First Love, Reflection y Awake forman parte del álbum WINGS, podrían reaccionar a ellos también.
Today is so exciting!! 🥳 Thank you once again for brightening my day 🌞 I had such fun watching this reaction! You both get EXTRA BONUS KUDOS for reading Demian. Wow, it is rare to see reactors actually take the time to do that before watching this. 🏆 And both of you made such interesting observations on your first time watching, because of that!! People seem to walk away from the book and this MV with different interpretations, and I much prefer that. I'm of the opinion that artists seem not to prefer a single narrative to prevail when it comes to a body of their work. I enjoy hearing different interpretations. Caitlin *IS* an amazing detective 🧐, and so are you, Andrew! I don't know if I've ever thought that garden to represent Eden but it makes so much sense... and the musical contrast point was well explained & so interesting! 🤔 BST is soo iconic, prepare to understand an onslaught of memes now 😅 and cheers to your own meme, the Batman Bunny 😄 CFA
Thank you, Angela! It was really interesting knowing about Demian before watching the MV, I really feel like we got so much more from it. And I completely agree about the different ways art can be interpreted. I think it's great if you get to know what the artist actually intended so you can understand them more, but I also love the mystery and just figuring it out for yourself
I have a suggestion if you aren’t already doing this on your own. I think it would be awesome for you to look up which album the song you are doing each video is from so you get a sense of the themes of each one and how they work together! Enjoy your reactions!
Your wife notices all the little details and I love it! 🥰 They just released an intro of some sorts about the 7 Fates of Chakho. It's a webtoon BTS series and they will likely be dropping Easter egg hints in future music videos. She will be great in making theories.
It's great that you picked up on so many details, but I think this video needs to be watched again, especially after reading the book so that info is fresh in our minds. I remember that after reading the book and watching this video (and their short films for this album) I picked up on so many other details: the apple is referenced in the book, the painting of the bird, the mother-son statue (image of Eva), the water, the paints, and probably other things I don't remember now. :)
Come check out the new Discord! discord.gg/AxzyErPwH7
10:25 A note about the organ music you might find interesting/relevant:
The piece that is heard is Buxtehude's, "Passacaglia in D minor," which is also the piece that Emil hears in the Pistorius section of the novel.*
* All credit goes to ReactToTheK (specifically Yunyi), for figuring that out & tracking down the reference. ua-cam.com/video/K3XtBF_qX0o/v-deo.html
I can't recommend Umu's ReactToTheK channel highly enough - she gets her fellow classical musicians to react to & analyze Korean Idol music through the lens of their expertise.
I loved your reaction to this, you guys managed to pick up on a lot of stuff, you really have hawk eyes :D This is part of the BU universe, please also react to the Japanese version of the Blood, sweat and tears MV, it's just as interesting :)
Oh awesome!! I think we will when we dive into the BU more!
I think Caitlin's writer's brain would have all sorts of fun with the BU (sorry I have never seen Caitlin's name spelt so no idea if it's correct!).
@@melsb1825 it's on the community post, it's Caitlin :)
@@alinamaria3147 Oops thanks will edit :)
i think Japanese version will have copyright strike.
Thank you so much! 💜
I love hearing ARMY stories! Thanks for sharing this!
*learn new things~
Also,I'm really getting excited when Caitlin spot little details in the mv bcs it feels like I'm with my friend being excited and all hshshshs
Let's go,,to Bangtan Universe,,we'll enter a world where we try to patch things form here and there together and do theories~ *there's many Army uncovered and apparently it's true and some we're being clowns 🤡 (it's fun!)
But still,HYYH & Highlight reels..ahh
I love it ( all these theories) bcs the story begin since they're young until enter the adult life. (so many topic they cover by their songs) There are songs that are not link with BU and most of it are.
Anyway,it's 3 in the morning here and thank you for the great video~
*apologise for my bad English bcs as you can see,it is not my first language.
Alsooo, gonna download discord real quick and join you guys bcs I def don't want to miss any live reaction vid to run bts/in the soop/bon voyage and all bcs you can see their personality there (couldn't wait hshshshsh)
Thank you so much! That's the exact contrast we want there to be 😊
And we will dive into the BU at some point, but probably not for a little while I think!
Glad to have you join the Discord!
I'm a pianist. SUGA became my bias when I saw him playing the organ in this video 😚
These are just a few details:
- The members are paired with a younger and an older member (student/teacher)
- A bike and sling-shot to symbolize childhood or innocence
- Jin is looking at Bruegel's painting The Fall Of The Rebel Angels
- RM's drinking the halucinogenic Absinth which symbolizes creativity, liberation, madness and despair
- Above the mirror is a quote by Nietzche: "Mann muss noch chaos in sich haben um einen tanzenden stern gebähren zu können" = You must have chaos within you to give birth to a dancing star
- In the first "chandelier-room" behind Suga is the painting The Lament Of Icarus by Draper
- V jumps into the painting The Fall Of Icarus by Bruegel
- Suga plays Buxtehude Passacaglia on the organ which is what Pistorius plays for Sinclair in the book
Even all the statues have names connected with good and evil!
Hermann Hesse was a patient of swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung and Demian is heavily influenced by his theories - like his Map Of The Soul - as are BTS's Map Of The Soul albums.
There's also a Bangtan Bomb of the making of it.
Thank you for all of this detail!!
Thanks for the info!
I like how you guys understood the references in this. Most UA-camrs who react to this are confused haha
It's sooo nice to watch a reaction from someone who has actually read and understood the book because you two has so much more insight into the story this mv/song was trying to tell. Love your reaction!
..
Reminds me that I should still read the book myself 🤭.
Thanks! We wanted to do our research before so we could look for a lot of the connections! It was really cool to see!
You both are amazing...I never noticed Jimin holding that Apple and I've watched this MV like 100 times. You really caught on so many things fast and it just shows how you genuinely love music and want to understand it. My brain cells can't manage this MV till now so I'll definitely have to read the book. Love you both and keep going deep into the rabbit hole just like me 💜
Thank you so much! Caitlin really knocked it out of the park noticing the apple there 😂
@@AndrewBergSax oh my gosh Andrew, I'm just seeing you replied to my comment since...😌
And this is why BTS videos have high rewatch rates -- you were able to catch some details which some haven't caught despite having watched the MV many times :)
So I e watched over a dozen reactions to this and Catlyn caught things even high end breakdowns havent like the room lighting etc. It’s a masterpiece of Easter eggs on the theme of light and dark with temptation.
Wow, that's incredible!! 😀
The quality and attention to details in BTS's videos it's always so great that I can watch it for the 100th time and still be amazed 😍🥰💜
AAahhhhh finally Blood Sweat & Tears!!!! I'm so happy you get to experience this masterpiece (and my personal rabbit hole) 😁
First: I recognize the Wings-Era Bunny from discord right there!!! wow! 😁
I really appreciate the fact that you both put in the work and actually researched Demian in advance for this song reaction. Thank you for that! It really shows throughout the video with your comments, as well, how you can connect so many different aspects.
All the light/dark, good/evil, white/black, and similar contrasts are all over the MV.
Chasing after your dreams, and all the costs you're willing to take for that (or not)...
The forbidden fruit / temptation,
Yes to all of it.
I also love your discussion of downbeat vs upbeat contrast and how that also plays into the same theme of it (as well as the harmony interval later on). I've never really paid that much attention to it before, it just gave me a certain kind of feeling. And you now perfectly explained why.
The ending of the MV... yeah... 😜
But also, if you want to watch the japanese version (in your own time), that one will start on the level of the ending of this one, and only get more feverish/trippy 🤪... so be warned.
I just imagine that you have an entire folder dedicated for videos of bts members eating lol
🤣
Hahaha I have to say, they eat a lot of food. And there are a surprising amount of videos out there just dedicated to them eating 😂
@@AndrewBergSax gotta keep them AND the algorithm fed!
So it’s extra cool because you can have multiple theories based purely off of Demian, the BU, or both!💜
Oh that's awesome! I'm excited to revisit it once we dive into the BU!
Caitlin your makeup 💄 is always gorgeous

That's amazing! But I hope we're not holding you up from any plans 😅

Wooo I am glad you finally listened to my all time favourite BTS song! It's amazing how many things you picked up! I am amazed how many references you picked up on first watch! Caitlin you are a genius! As always, amazing reaction guys!
Thank you so much! We really enjoyed this one and the MV is insane! Can't wait to listen to it a million more times 😅
Best reaction I've seen. Because you understand the message they are trying to convey in the song and video. I'm impressed.
Love, love, love your reactions to this. 😘
Yes it is Bach, Mass in B minor. The statue on the left is David and Goliath. He is holding his head. The painting in the beginning is The Fall of the Rebel Angels by Breugel the Elder. RM has absinthe. I am trying to leave things up to your own interpretation and just telling you what it is
🤣 💜
Sorry, but that's not David and Goliath. It's the statue of Perseus with the head of Medusa.
The statue on the right is Livia Drusilla as Ops, goddess of fertility. It represents J-Hope's MAMA in the BTS Universe storyline.
Borahae 💜💜
Thank you so much! I'm going to watch some of the explanations soon to see what other people caught! 😀
I didn't either! Caitlin blew my mind a little with that one 😂 I feel like the relation to fame is a similar one seen in Black Swan and Dionysus too!
This songs dance practice is my fav of all the bts dances, also this song and MV has so many hidden gems and meanings that you have to re watch it over a hundred times, i keep finding something new even after a million times watching it.
Also this song has a sensual feeling aswell and j love my Jiminies vocals in it
Jimin's not even my bias but dang if he doesn't straight up look like a yummy ready to eat snack in this one! 🤤😁😇
Oh How I love you guys reactions! Fyi, after a few hard years, they were just starting to blow up in Korea at the time (2015), which led me to think that this song mainly refers to their desire and temptation they "had to" to face more and more.
Yes they ALWAYS write and sing about their own stories from 2013 till now, which makes their music so genuine!
I love your reactions! As new ARMYs enjoying everything BTS and with your music and writing backgrounds - it’s the perfect combination!
You two have a lot of knowledges about music, books, and other stuff, so I really enjoy watching your reaction and learning what I didn't know!!!
Thank you so much, we will definitely dive into the BU in the future! Glad to have you in the Discord!
What a great combo you two are for reactions! I've seen BST soany times but felt excited again following along your reaction!
That's great, thank you! 😀
oh yeah, she is genies
Stay well
YES! I can't wait to see your reaction to this, I'm so early too lets get it!
😀
Hi Andrew and Kaitlyn 👋
Thank you for your reaction. I really enjoy your content. 😁
I love this masterpiece of an MV and the song.
I REALLLLLLLY WANT TO SEE CAITLIN WATCH THE DANCE PRACTICE OF THIS SONGGGG
Omg yes!!! 😆
Lol
I love your observations about the theme.
Thanks for all the extra info!!
you guys caught so much upon your first watch! love your enthusiasm. 💜
Thank you, we really enjoyed this one!! 💜
Bless you, bless you, bless you both for the most comprehensive reaction I have ever experienced for this song! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
💜
Yay!! So excited to see both of you react to this, it’s an awesome song and the mv is really complex, the symbolism is insane…Plus, it’s gotta be said, all seven are so beautiful here 🤷♂️😂💜💜 I’ll edit as I watch (it’s a habit, sorry 😞)
You both did really well picking up on the symbolism (I know you are both very creative, so it’s not surprising) - there are some excellent explanation videos on YT if you want to delve deeper.
The dance practice video is fascinating too, the choreo is brilliant, and you can see it all so clearly…
Oh that sounds awesome! I definitely plan on watching some of those videos on my own!
The painting that Jin is watching at the beginning is 'The Fall of the Rebel Angels' by Peter Bruegel the Elder.
This is the best reaction for this song, more songs of bts. Thank you. More power! 💜💜💜
Thank you!
Thank you so much! And I agree, BTS and their production teams are absolutely amazing
I appreciate your reaction. I didn't know it was based on a book. But it made me understand it more. 😁💜
I don't know why but everytime I watch these couple I'm always amazed how they look at each other while the other is talking..they really looked so in love..by the way, love your reactions guys..love from Philippines..can't wait for more BTS reactions
💜
Great job you guys! I think putting this with a backdrop of the pursuit of fame really centers it. There are larger themes, but none feel quite as perfect to me.
Also, I am going to watch your reactions again because you two caught so many things that I never noticed before after watching this video many, many times!
Sooo proud of my boyss which are noww finally getting the recognition and appreciation theyyyy deserve💜💜

I love this so much... It's like I'm talking with friends bout something we really like. My dream
Thanks for checking this out. Love watching you both breakdown the MV.
Loved your reaction!! You pointed out things I had missed. I really hope y’all will react to the Wings short films 1-7. Please. They kind of relate to this.
oh my god they know so much about the book, i wonder how many symbolism and easter eggs are they gonna pick up from the short films 😭😭
Gosh, I love me an educated reaction 😍 thank you!
Thank you so much!
You really caught a lot of details. I didn't have saw that the first time I watched it. I'm just so fascinated on the members' visuals 😁
You guys are really good! I didn't catch a lot of the things you pointed out! Also side comment, I love your lipstick :D And I love the way Caitlin is Andrew's hypeman (woman?) and makes enthusiastic expressions when he speaks lol
bighit say... we came to play. ye they are damn serious.
This was wonderful!!! I loved it!!
Thank you so much!
AHHH PLEASE START THE BU TOGETHER !!! The first mv is I need u 19+ !
Yay! I knew I could trust you both! You practically nailed it, from the theme of the MV and the theme of the song, to smaller details (black and white, light and shadow, also green being the color of envy/temptation/corruptness)
You missed just 1 thing, a German quote on top of the mirror. Nietzche:
Man muss noch Chaos in sich haben, um einen tanzenden Stern gebären zu können.
(One must have chaos within oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star. -- literal order so you catch up on the words)
Let me paste the meaning, though obvious (imo): By “chaos”, Nietzsche is referencing an inherent discontent that reinforces the drive of “self-overcoming” and “becoming”.
You need to have something (feel) unsettled within you, to look for settlement or arrangement of the pieces that conform you.
I hope that makes sense :D
I can't wait to see you falling down the BU hole, now that we've secured you on the rabbit one :P
Not sure if I'll be able to join the discord (I don't even know how those work, but a lot of people use them!), but I'll do my best to see you there!
Take care!
PS. BTS/BigHit are killing us with content these 2 vacation weeks T-T
As a heads-up, they are delving into a new universe/story (although related to the BU from what they said) named Chakho, 7 fates: it'll consist primarily on a comic and a story (available in webtoon and wattpad respectively), but also it will be included in some upcoming MVs (iiiiiiiih): today they released a teaser (30min) and yesterday some interview-excerpts and there is a couple more teaser-trailer videos. If you don't know yet, here: ua-cam.com/channels/WAQUQFOtYRndsDxJLe5VWA.html
Thank you for that in depth translation!
There is speculation about this universe and the other 2 created for TXT (same company) and Enhypen (1/2 same mother company xD) and the new girl group that's supposed to debut next year @_@
you are a writer? what are you writing? articles? books ? books for children? what kind of writer? tell us more :D
Caitlin is an adult contemporary fiction author! She posts a little bit about her projects on her Twitter @caitlincross if you're interested!
Yay, another great reaction. You caught so many things including some I have never paid attention to like the devil and angel statues and the apple. Like wow!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I still have no idea how Caitlin noticed the apple that quickly 🤯
I lost the number of times I’ve watched this video & could still watch it over & over.
Such an amazing song and video. I always laugh because Yoongi didn't think this song would do well because the title had to many body fluids lmao
😂
I saw this comment on another 'Blood, Sweat & Tears' reaction and had to share it. It's the best explanation I've seen for the mv. This is their theory, I won't take credit for other peoples work.

Blood Sweat and Tears video and song were built and written based on Demian, a novel by Hermann Hesse which won a Nobel prize in literature back in 1946.
It says "He too was a tempter, he too was a link to the second, the evil world with which I no longer have anything to do."
"He" here refers to Demian, that Sinclair once thought as a bad influence for him, maybe it's because Sinclair tried to deny his dark sides.
(Please note once again that this is all my own interpretation after reading the book, take it with a grain of salt.)
The last comment was because the reactors are new to BTS. They're Baby ARMY, so there's still a lot they don't know.
see this why i am subscribe here, the way andrew dissect the music for us coz im always curious why we love these songs, and i like to understand that its not just because we love BTS but because the intricasy of how they create this songs, the dance step and the MV is like a whole piece of a puzzle that fits perfectly. well i have no idea about upbeat and downbeat. and now i do! yay! you guys should also watch the parody of Blood, Sweet and Tears done by BTS, that one was hilarious! kinda even out the heavyness of this one.
this falls right in the middle of the bangtan universe storyline 👀 if you were planning to check that out
We plan to at some point!
Consider watching the dance practice and see if you can pick it the several moves that reflect the theme
Oh that sounds cool! 😀
I’ve watched this mv for the nth time but still im discovering new symbolisms
I didnt see apple before!
First ever reaction when I first watched this years agoo, "whaaat????" 👀🤔 (blown away)
😂
This mv & song are one of my all times favs. You did a great job!
Gracias por reaccionar a BS&T. Los Short films Beggin, Lie, Stigma, First Love, Reflection y Awake forman parte del álbum WINGS, podrían reaccionar a ellos también.
This is the killing part Jimin in blood sweat and tears
BST is soo iconic, prepare to understand an onslaught of memes now 😅 and cheers to your own meme, the Batman Bunny 😄

Perfect 🥰 I love this song
"This was like a fever dream".... Haha, laughs in Blood, Sweat and Tears (Japanese version) 🤣
Oh I'm excited 😅
Your wife notices all the little details and I love it! 🥰 They just released an intro of some sorts about the 7 Fates of Chakho. It's a webtoon BTS series and they will likely be dropping Easter egg hints in future music videos. She will be great in making theories.
Oh awesome! Is this in any way related to the BU or is it separate?
@@AndrewBergSax yes, related to BU.
Oh BS&T yes, welcome to the Bangtan Universe rabbit hole 😆 (if you're going to go deeper into their storyline, good luck)
Hahaha we will at some point!
wow caitlin has a hawkeye, i
