Tell us folks - what is the first question you've asked an editor that's worked for you?
How do you feel about empowering self-help books that must keep a writer inspired?
Saved me 6 mins. Thanks!

Did NOT say how much it would cost
You didn't touch on how much it will cost, which is the title of the video. I'm currently halfway through a biography and I think I'm looking at around about the 150k word mark, maybe a bit more and I'm terrified about the cost of having it edited. I don't have a great deal of money as it is and I just can't find any real information on the editing prices anywhere online, just a bunch of ifs and maybes. I know what I want my book to be and the tone of it, so I'm only wanting it edited for grammar (making sure the commas, punctuations are correct) and the paragraphs and overall layout is done correctly.
However, finding a rough price for this is a nightmare, all I'm finding is, 'some editors charge £20-30 per hour and can take 250 hours to edit a book', 'some take 30 hours and charge £3000', I mean, that kind of money is insane, you'd have to hit on a best seller to get that kind of money back, it's scary for someone who's never done anything like this before.
I'm still a good few months off of getting my book finished but just trying to find out roughly how much I'm going to need to have it done properly is confusing as sin.
Is this a memoir? Tell me more
You haven't answered the question of your title.
😳
Too scary, I think 😱
I agree. Totally a waste of time.
I was hoping for an approximate number.
Great video. With any significant purchase in life I generally request at least 3 quotes to get an idea of what the ballpark price should be. Then, base my engagement on who I feel can deliver the best service, not necessarily the lowest price. Thanks again for providing the proper questions to ask. Very informative.
Lastly, with my first book I paid a friend who was an English major to do a line edit/proof read. Now that I'm working on my second effort I want to engage a pro to do the same.
Are the writers getting a raw deal from the publishers? Are the publishers expecting too much from the authors? Do the publishers want an author to do everything and submit print-ready materials because of the high demand? Publishers should take note that reputable authors have given up writing, as it takes a lot of time in writing with very little reward. Many authors have now resorted to self-publishing and rightly so.
We know what an editor does. We want to know what it costs.
So I would have to count each word in the book?
Is there an app that does that quicker?
Microsoft Word has a numbers count

So when is someone going to help me edit my book? I'm trying to get a really good job done. It's a self-help book on recovery that also shows people how to be successful no matter what they believe in, where they are from or the issue's they want to change.
Did you ever obtain a book editor?
