It’s so edifying to see great masterworks in the context for which they were created, to understand their function and meaning, which is lost in a museum setting.
I have been to the Cathedral admiring these monumental altar pieces, the sheer size of them alone is overwhelming. Rubens is a master in his use of movement, composition and color. Being religious myself it is very moving in every sense of the word.
It was a revelation to me that Counter-Reformation policy dictated that patrons appear only in the side-panels of polyptychs. This explains a change I had noted but thought attributable to changes in taste.
I was already amazed by the elevation version of this, but here's another stunner! How interesting that he decided to change his technique - I enjoyed the "visual fireworks" of the other version, but you can't really complain in either case. It's not surprising to see John the Evangelist portrayed so prominently and elegantly - uniquely positioned to hold most of Christ's body as the favored disciple. I wonder if the red outfit is referencing / at all associated with cardinals. I'm noticing that Mary and Simeon are also exclusively in red for their respective panels and that everyone else's colors are more muted. This is no coincidence! I wasn't ready for the details about Rubens being a father and conveying that grandfatherly tenderness while holding the infant Christ. Stop trying to make me cry on a Saturday, lol.
My favorite flemish painter
Masterful painting and insightful dialogue. This channel is a gift to all humanity.
