    Question, isn't the direction counterclockwise?

    Mercury is actually 87.969 day/year not 88.7.
    Venus is over 240.
Also where can I buy this and how much does it cost?

Those are the orbits that I was able to get with this simple gearing system, not the actual orbital periods. You may be able to buy one from Dave Goodchild; search on his name and you should be able to find his contact information.

Hi,Amazing model!! great work. How would I be able to get plans to teach children to make?

Hi, I'm planning on building a table sized one for the school I work at, I was just wondering if you have a plan about the ratios and lay out etc. It might help a lot. But I can also understand if you don't want to give that info out.

I have drawings (coreldraw format) but they are not what you would call plans. I'm not sure how I can get them to you without broadcasting an email address. My middle initial is B and if you put my first two initials together with my last name and send it to gmail, maybe it will make it.

where did you get the plans for daves orrery? I am currently working on my own wooden orrery and seeing some plans would be really useful. Ive got some nice gear ratios worked out and templates made and have made a few gears for experimenting with the bit i am curios about is how gears have been affixed to shafts and how gear motion is transported vertically through the centre of the orrery so the planets can revolve around the supports

I just made my own plans. Dave showed enough pictures so that one could work out how to lay everything out. I think, though, that he approached it like you would for metal gears, where cutters are expensive so you have to stay with the same module for the whole mechanism. With wood gears, you don't have that limitation, as long as all meshing gears are the same module, so you can get much better gear ratios than were used with classic orreries. The gears are mounted on K&S brass tubing that you can get in various sizes to stack inside each other in the vertical tube. My sketches are in Corel Draw format, if you're interested in them.

@@kenmuldrew3275 I knew about the gear pitch and had already made some pretty accurate gear ratios. After writing that comment yesterday I realised the brass tubing is just nested inside each other. This has given me a new enthusiasm for this project

Are you willing to provide the updated gearing and instructions? If so would you please email them to me so I can make this with my kid?

What do your changes to Dave's design men in terms of number of teeth and on which particular gears?

    • @kenmuldrew3275
      @kenmuldrew3275  6 років тому

The main limitation of Dave’s design was that he built it as if he was using metal gears (where you only have cutters for certain DPs, so all your gears have the same DP). With wood gears, you can adjust the DP as long as each gear pair has the same DP. The gearing that I used was 50 teeth for the drive wheel, 56:55 for Earth, 69:43 for Venus, 97:24 for Mercury, 40:77 for Mars, 26:26:80-27:106 for Jupiter, and 19:19:105-19:103 for Saturn.

Wow - how have I missed this! Great job with putting this together (and well done for taking the opportunity to improve my rudimentary maths!). It's great to see somebody else building a version of my design.
So how did you find the build - relatively straightforward or was it a bit of a challenge? It does look great though - you should be well chuffed.
I'm currently building a full working version of the antikythera mechanism, something that I've wanted to do for years and I've only now gained enough experience to give it a go - lots of gears and complication, but it's going really well, so far...
Take care and well done once again!
    :-)

Dave Goodchild Thank you for your very kind words. I did find the build quite challenging. In the planning stages I had intended to make it quite a bit more complicated, but then I got bogged down trying to find a good way to cut the gears. I was so fixed on the gears that I didn't notice that my calendar for the big wheel was backwards. It was only after posting this video and showing it to my nephew, and having him ask, "How do you know the planets go in that direction?" that I realized I had it backwards. I reprinted the calendar and then my moon was going backwards. It's all fixed now but I really want to try building one from metal. It will take a while before I am able to make metal gears of arbitrary pitch, but I'm in no hurry. I do hope you post some pictures of your antikythera mechanism; that should be a fascinating project. Thank you for designing this orrery and posting all your progress pictures. You are an inspiration to all of us who love geared mechanisms.
