Hi Tim, First of all thanks for your fantastic lessons, You are a great teacher. The thing I like the most about your lesson is that your playing is full of cool little licks , which I try to copy and put into my playing. Thank You Very Much !
"He had a voice that could make a wolverine purr..." I would like Tim's voice to be on everything. How soothing would that be? Awesome lesson, thanks mate!
Yeah!! I was RAISED on Merle Travis, Chet, Elvis (Scotty Moore), Gene Vincent (Cliff Gallup)... and then the Stray Cats hit back home when I was 11 yrs old in 1981... thank you, to my incredible parents who took me to my first rock concert-- seeing CHUCK BERRY and JERRY LEE LEWIS when I was 11... you know I switched from playing acoustic for 4 years to electric!! Go Chuck Go!! And now... watching Tim Lerch playing rockabilly and Travis style Boom-Chick pickin'? I'm in heaven! 😂💯
Hopefully I can find a followup lesson of yours after this one. There isn't a whole lot that I'll be able to figure out for myself, and I doubt if very many people can.
My Drummer suggested I try and write a Rockerbilly type tune, and I had no idea what the hell I am letting myself in for until I started watching some of these clips. Good to see someone who strips it all back to basics for us harder rockers who have no experience at all in this stuff. NOt sure if I will actually write a Rockerbilly based tune, but learning it is going to be fun.
Hi, I am the grandson of a fellow named Joe Manual a Rockabilly Musician out of Memphis. He passed when my Mother was sixteen, so I a never met him. I picked around with guitar on for years mostly but mostly Folk and some rock. I would really love to learn this style.
I must return when I have time. Tim, too bad you are not my next door neighbor... you would play my 1969 Silvertone any time! Thank you for the tutorials!
i try this picking for one week and only can play the basic pattern over one chord. but in some moments i got the roll and it sounds great. in the first hours i thought i do not check it out in this life.
It's a D9 - open A string, F# on the D str, C on the G str, E on the B str. A on the E str. = in other words a jazzy, bluesy D9 in the A shape on the 5th fret. Hope that helps..if u didn't get it already.
Could anyone tell me of any songs that have a similar picking pattern as the intro? I've had that pattern in my head and under my fingers for a couple years now, but I can't think of any specific songs that have it.
All you need is practice. I thought that too but now Im very fast and precise. Only thing thats giving me a hard time is muting bass strings while playing. Peace
i there I like you play can you help me , I hope you can see I love play the guitar and I love all elvis Presley songs , can you show me how to play I beg of you by elvis Presley he did it in 1958 .so I hope you can help me thanks
That's really funny... and also really sad... because Tim's tone on this video is about a GAZILLION times better than your videos. Understood about the thumb on the root - but as to "NEVER using Barre (not bar) chords in this style": Brian Setzer for one vehemently disagrees with you, as did Danny Gatton... there is a time and place for BOTH ways of fingering. In summary: based on your "sound" compared to theirs (and Tim's) - I'll listen to them, instead of your armchair complaints.
While black musicians were absolutely influential in rockabilly we have to also aknowledge the influence of white "hillbilly" music. That's what rockabilly is; the merge of black rock and roll with a country twang as played by mostly white musicians. It's a musical genre for all people born of the best of both groups.
One of the best lessons of any instrument I've seen in youtube so far. Such a natural born teacher, loved it.
Probably my favorite video on the internet.
Tim Lerch. Playing guitar, like a BOSS
Easily one of my favorite guys out there.

It's a D9 - open A string, F# on the D str, C on the G str, E on the B str. A on the E str. = in other words a jazzy, bluesy D9 in the A shape on the 5th fret. Hope that helps..if u didn't get it already.

Phenomenal player

Yeah Tim! I hope to play with you sometime :-)
Thanks!
" If you can get that-- you are ready to rock". Oh well: I am not ready to rock.
Go to the jet city website. Click Articles/ lessons. All the vids and pdf are there
Pretty sure it's a Charlie Christian pickup
awesome!!
Could anyone tell me of any songs that have a similar picking pattern as the intro? I've had that pattern in my head and under my fingers for a couple years now, but I can't think of any specific songs that have it.
+srvgravesdime Mystery Train by Elvis Presley
+srvgravesdime Smokestack Lightning by Howlin' Wolf
+srvgravesdime She's a Woman by The Beatles
@CoandCaSSTB Haha, so I am not the only one. Keep on trying!
Travis's style was around before he did it. It's called Piedmont picking style. You can look it up.
cool!
wow great lesson i took 10h to gert it...right
I can't open the pdfs?? Anybody else having a problem?
how to get that sound with an stratocaster?
for starters he changed pickups, he explained what pickups in some of hes clips on he's own channel
Well, he's also using a Telecaster, not a Strat
deluxe reverb!
All you need is practice. I thought that too but now Im very fast and precise. Only thing thats giving me a hard time is muting bass strings while playing. Peace
Try using your palm of your picking hand just rest it near the bridge
you're killin me! :)
huge natural born teacher. got to send you some flowers and a bottle of booze!
i there I like you play can you help me , I hope you can see I love play the guitar and I love all elvis Presley songs , can you show me how to play I beg of you by elvis Presley he did it in 1958 .so I hope you can help me thanks
.pdf's don't work!
@CoandCaSSTB He doesn't really explain it, so no!
Seems like a twin reverb to me...
Jeff Bridges twin
Charlie Christian pickup
Men this is sooo hard to play :-(
That's really funny... and also really sad... because Tim's tone on this video is about a GAZILLION times better than your videos.

Same voice than Jeff Bridges...
Hey Christopher Columbus, let's give credit to the black Americans you stole this music from. Charley Patton, Son House, Rl Burnside, Kim y...etc...
I bet you're fun at parties.
+David Molyneux you replied to the wrong guy, fella.
What a tit, maybe he should give credit to the Scottish slaves that brought the beats and structure for the music?
While black musicians were absolutely influential in rockabilly we have to also aknowledge the influence of white "hillbilly" music. That's what rockabilly is; the merge of black rock and roll with a country twang as played by mostly white musicians. It's a musical genre for all people born of the best of both groups.
I,m not sure the blacks invented the alternating bass pattern
Tim what is the neck pickup? It's not a standard Tele pickup.
it's a Charlie Christian Pickup made by Lollar. With the DeArmond Dynasonic, two great neck pickups for this kind of style.
Great lesson!
