Kirby Super Star [Game Concepts]

- In my latest Game Concepts video, I'll be taking a look at Kirby Super Star and breaking down the two major themes it was built on. By the end, you'll understand exactly how I came up with them.
I wasn't aware a concept for a 6th game was completely scrapped, as a gigantic fan of the original Kirby Super Star this is both fascinating and extremely sad to know, the concept itself sounds incredible.
I suppose we did eventually get a few spin-offs where Kirby doesn't inhale things, but the horror idea seems really interesting. Love your animations BTW.
we'll get our horro kirby rpg someday
Yeah, I *need* Kirby Resident Evil in my life now.
(Laughs in Fecto Forgo)
Kirby super star was a banger, though a bit on the easier side for games in general of its erra (except arena). Once you take the shield build + shock charge power it becomes easy. Without it, it's hard. Before that discovery, rock was the go-to power.
“Kirby Super Star was originally going to have a mode where Kirby had his mouth sealed shut and had to explore a spooky mansion” sounds like a creepypasta premise and yet here it is, straight from Sakurai-San.
3:24 Mr. Sakurai expressing his qualms about the costumes Kirby wears is the funniest thing I've seen all day. 😂
You can feel the frustration in that inhale he did afterward.
Yea for real, that was a good laugh
This game is technically what formed my gaming tastes and interests, thank you so much for this incredible game, it changed my life
Me too! This was my first ever game. Kirby will always be my favorite character :)
Top 5 platformers of all time, and still my favorite Kirby game.
@@Chadius nice
I like Sakurai’s reaction to Miyamoto’s idea. One of the most famous figures in the company at the time asks you to implement a brand new feature into your series at a time when people were still figuring onscreen co-op out. That had to be motivating but at least a little scary
Typical Miyamoto throwing his weight around to have other people so things he couldn't bother designing/implementing himself.
@@Ninetaled I mean to be fair, Kirby's slower running and pacing did make that more feasible at the time.
@@Ninetaled I mean he's probably a big boss at the time and Sakurai is contracted to develop games. If I was paying him I'd do the same.
@@Ninetaled Yeah, how dare he ask a developer to develop ideas. My man should've written every single piece of code himself.
Its not like Miyamoto Steve Jobbed it and put his face everywhere. Credit went to who made it. Imagine if Miyamoto didn't expect a thing from his devs.
@@Ninetaled Dude’s an artist and director. Not sure what that was about, but seeing as he directed Mario 1, 3, and 64, some of the biggest milestones in gaming in a time when we didn’t even have these rules on good design, I’d say he’s earned his weight at Nintendo.
I always thought having player 2 be an actual enemy was a great idea. People like to have the chance to play as an enemy and even though player 1 is prioritized it gives an appeal to player 2 as well instead of just having them be lesser.
For real. I played this game as a kid with a friend a LOT. And even though it was his SNES, his game, and his controllers, he insisted on being Player 2 because he liked being the enemies so much.
@@TheRealBatabii we were kids so i dont think so. he mostly played as Plasma and flew around
Perfect dark did this in an awesome way with counter Op....
Man perfect dark feels like a game sakurai would make
I remember Silent Bomber having a gamemode where you can play as most of the enemies. It was a pretty cool feature
Same with playing as Tails in Sonic 2 and 3. The Helper system in Kirby made playing the game a lot more fun with my sisters as kids.
6:01 Knowing that Kirby would get carried away chasing a butterfly to the point of getting lost into scary woods is so cute.
My first reaction was "awwwww, Kirby!"
Brilliant work; not just the video, the game too!
In retrospect, it's not that cute, considering the whole thing modern kirby has with butterflies
And then: cutesy body horror. Ah, such is the kirby series
Always the damn butterflies.
Are we just going to ignore the "butterfly" part?
3:15 The Copy Hats are such a good addition to Kirby, they're a really cute way to show off his cap-abilities
The impact that Super Star has had on Kirby is wild, its format eventually lead to the creation of Planet Robobot, which I still think is one of the best platformers (and games in general) that Nintendo's ever published to this day.
I loved being able to see the thought process behind this game, and even getting a small peek at the cut Kagero's Mansion!
oh no...
not you again!😰
Ya know ever since you started praising chuggaaconroy like a god years ago I've seen you on like every video I watch
YEYAHHAHHHH CHRISTOPHER MOON COMMENT LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOO
@@canalso5806 What do you mean?
@ Some people probably just get jealous seeing the same people always get top comment. Like influencers without the check mark. It's not even like Chris is spamming emotionally manipulative comments to get subscribers. They're making thoughtful comments and people just recognize that.
The distinct pfp probably helps, too.
I used to set up action figures and dolls in front of the TV when I played Superstar, and narrated Kirby's adventures as I played, as if it were a movie they were watching... It really was an incredible game.
I grew up playing Kirby superstar on the DS. Me and my friend across the street would play multiplayer all the time, and I have really fond memories of it for that reason. Thanks for all the memories, Sakurai
you could of just said ultra and we would of got that it was on ds lol
@@user-bb2op9he1x its not that serious
“The things you make today can lead to what you make tomorrow.” -Sakurai
really like it
I really like the idea of the cut game mode. I'd love to see that in a future game. Kirby in the Mouthless Mansion?
"I Have No Mouth And I Must Poyo"
We did get some spinoffs where Kirby can't eat, but Kirby with a horror aesthetic sounds really cool.
@@magetsalive5162 I could beat Kirby
I think modders will be more than happy to make the cut Kagero Mansion scenario out of love for the games, as well as copy-less Spring Breeze so Sakurai can have his desires fulfilled.
Kirby Canvas Curse and its sequel takes some of Kirby's abilities away but its not for everyone since its not a platformer
Kirby Super Star always felt like the epitome of Kirby to me, from the music, to the controls and the overall game feel
It's also definitely the case that having it broken up into a lot of different games helps. Most of the newer Kirby games really drag on during the mid to end game.
It absolutely is. It is one of the coolest games on the system. The art, music, sfx, and gameplay are all S tier. It is one of the few games that is genuinely easy, yet still a ton of fun to play.
@@deedoubs I feel like the only reason recent Kirby games start to drag on is because the levels themselves become way longer, they'll like triple or quadruple in length by the last or even second to last world, although in games like triple deluxe those are the levels with some of the best level design
Definitely, and the ending to Milky Way Wishes almost felt like the ending to the entire series, especially after the epic fight with Marx.
@@deedoubs I feel similar but about the start of most Kirby games.
Kirby Super Star is one of my favorite games of all time, thanks so much for giving us a behind the scenes look!
It's my favorite singleplayer game ever, so this was nice to see (my fave multiplayer game is TF2 if you are curious).
I will never not enjoy how Sakurai uses this channel to *truly* lift the veil on what goes on behind the making of video games. Seeing him casually talk about things ranging from cut modes and ideas, to elements of his games which he wish had turned out differently in the format of a 7-minute UA-cam video is insane.
All I can think now is how has the idea of Kirby being unable to suck up his foes never appeared in another Kirby game? (Outside of Epic Yarn, if you count that.)
Superstar is still the quintessential Kirby game and a great place to start for the series. It's probably the first game I'd give to my kid to play when they are old enough.
agreed
Super Star Ultra, even better.
It’s nice to see the work that goes behind our favorite pink unicellular blob!
I'd love to see you talk about your thoughts on later Kirby games. Even if you didn't direct them, I'd be fascinated hearing what you think seeing the franchise you created evolving and changing in different ways over the years.
Ah yes. The game that inspired one of my favourite Smash Bros stages (Meta Knight's Revenge) and one of my least favourites. (Great Cave Offensive) and started the trend of cute critters being dirty traitors. This is the game that set most of the groundwork for the series IMO. Even Forgotten Land to this day has elements that started here. Still one of Kirby's best outings. Even better with the ds remake.
3:35 The frustration in that inhale was so strong.
Heck yeah super star ultra is my jam!
@@Mr.Feather130 jam is mid tho. Real gamers eat peanut butter
@@mimi73829 nehhh men nutLa bettar……:::.:
@@somerobloxdude3699 Still so noob. Dulce de leche is the real game
Still to this day my favorite Kirby game. Everything about it is perfect.
It is a little bit easy. Plus I feel later games like Return to Dream Land refined the Sword and Fighter abilities tremendously. But besides that, it's still a highlight in the series.
@@RangoTheMercenary I love RtDL but honestly, KSS still remains my favorite. The later games polish parts of this diamond but they don't exactly make the same bold moves with progression or change up the level structure much (other than amazing mirror) or pioneer bigger lasting evolutions like adding powers or movesets. Although Forgotten Land is probably the biggest evolution in years and definitely feels impactful. So I definitely count that one as a big one for the series and loved it
That lost Kirby game sounds amazing. Seeing the yo-yo ability made me realize how much I missed it, but reading about a haunted clock sealing Kirby’s mouth shut makes me wish that concept sees the light of day at some point.
Super Star is probably my #1 SNES game. I would play it for hours over and over at my grandmas house. Never head about the scrapped content but love hearing what could have been
6:52 - "The things you make today can lead to what you make tomorrow."
simple but important advice for anyone working on anything, from coding to art to everything else. even if it seems a bit obvious, its good to have in your mind!
That 6th scenario sounds so fun and intriguing! I want to play it now! Thank you for your insight Sakurai!
I love how he's happy, even happier than usual, when Sakurai is talking about Kirby!
I really love the music in these videos, I’m already humming along to specific tracks.
On Super Star itself, while it’s not my personal favorite, I have a ton of respect for it’s ambition and how much groundwork it laid for the series. It’s great that so many people connected with the game and it’s structure. It’s also a great example of how much easier a problem seems when it’s solved compared to when it’s posed, and so much of the game (as do most of his titles) show how much insight he has on the industry.
Time to Learn!
You can thank the people at QBIST for all the original music.
Oh wow I always heard that the mansion was supposed to be its own game but now we have confirmation that it was a scrapped SS section
Super star is one of the best Kirby games games. I grew up on super star ultra but it’s pretty much the same aside from a few changes. I got lost in the great cave offensive so much as a kid lol
The biggest change there is the responsiveness of AI partners. Compare SNES Bonkers to DS Bonkers.
*Additions
I grew up with KSS and bought KSSU and adored it
I’d say Ultra far surpasses the original due to how important revenge of the king and Galacta Knight are to the future of the series.
@@GigaOtomia the difference is Bonkers
Sakurai really went out on a high note with Kirby Super Star as his last directed Kirby game. So much of Kirby's identity came from his design decisions made to make this collection stand out and gave millions of people everywhere new ways of enjoying the pink puff's abilities, as well as the lore and characters expanded on that we previously knew very little about.
I'm incredibly grateful to live in a world with Kirby Super Star and it stands tall as one of my favorite games of all time.
His last Kirby was air ride
Kirby Super Star Ultra was the first Kirby game I owned, and its "omnibus" format really made an impression on me. One of these days, I want to create a game with mini-story arcs like that !
I didn't realize this until years later, but Kirby Super Star is like a platformer beat-em-up. I'm glad it was the first video game I've ever played.
Kirby Super Star remains one of my favourite games of all time. Playing it when I was a kid, with my friends, was such a special experience. I love this game! Thank-you to Mr. Sakurai for directing such a masterpiece!
Sakurai makes a great comment about how important it is to learn new skills, as the things you make today can lead to what you make tomorrow.
Can't wait to hear his thoughts on the mental and physical stresses he put himself through working on Melee
The best Kirby game! The amount of polish and heart in Super Star is wild and spoiled me for the rest of the series. I'll have to try playing Spring Breeze without copy abilities next time.
Then super star ultra took it to the next level
These videos are so important to gamers. I remember being around when all of this stuff was new. I was the test market. Now, kids live in an era where there is a long history for video games, and I'm glad you're making videos like this. Directly from the industry to the consumers. Thank you so much.
My first Kirby game was Kirby Super Star Ultra on the DS, and is my favourite game in the franchise to this day. It's the only game my sister and I have ever owned 2 copies of between the 2 of us. Now, almost 20 years later we've 100 percented the game multiple times and still play it togehter from time to time. I can safely say that Kirby Super Star Ultra was a formative element of both my, and my sister's childhoods. Arigato gozaimashita Sakurai San for these fond memories of my childhood.
Kirby Super Stars was the game that made me a full fledge Kirby fan to this day. When I first played it back in 98, I was blown away by the copy abilities and their own unique move sets, the music, the games, etc.
Kirby Super Star was the first game my daughter wanted to play with me when she was about 4 or 5. We would play Tag. I'd eat her and spit her out and she would run away and try to keep me Fram absorbing her again. Every time I did I pretend to chomp her in real life and she would always laugh.
You have been the designer behind all the games that has led to my best gaming moments in my life with my family. You are forever respected by me Mr. Sakurai. Thank you.
I like how Sakurai isn't afraid to talk about the negatives of his games or what happened during their development. Like when he wasn't happy that he was asked to include copy abilities to the first scenario by a Nintendo producer, or when he pointed out that he was unhappy with the CG backgrounds used in the game. He thought they looked pretty shit. I like how he's open about this stuff, he isn't trying to hold back on his true personal opinion on the game or the company. That's nice.
And yet, you can feel the love he has for the games he directed
5:55 I'm really curious to see how this unused scenario would have ended up. It's a shame it wasn't added in the DS version!
_Why do I have the feeling that it had the super _*_Mario the lost levels_*_ unforgiving style?_
Kirby super star and Kirby super star Ultra are great for researching different developmental techniques as the game varies with mechanics and gameplay between each minigame. I have personally used it for a few studies in my college classes myself
Kirby super star is one of those games that still holds up really well even after all these years. I never get tired of revisiting it and I always have a blast when playing it alone or with a friend.
3:34 I love that edit lol. I loved hearing about Sakurai's introduction to development with Kirby, now we get to hear about Smash Bros!!
Kirby Super Star is a game that carries a lot of weight in my life. I used to play it constantly with my little brother, we would spend hours together playing and talking and learning to work together!! Kirby Super Star is there in some of the most important memories I have of my life.
Thank you Mr.Sakurai and all of your staff, for making one of the most magical and important video games of all time! ✨⭐
Kirby Super Star is still my favorite Kirby game, it truly knocked everything out of the park. Thanks for the behind-the-scenes look at it!
This was the game that made me a fan of Kirby. I had played the previous two, but this is the one I kept coming back to over and over.
the way you approached and implemented 2 player play in kirby super star and how you accounted for the situations which would challenge it was absolutely brilliant
also i disagree on your assessment of the cg backgrounds in kss, for me they add a ton of charm and also really help set the vibe and tone for the game's overall presentation, so i'm really curious to know why you feel that way about the cg backgrounds
This was one of the first video games I ever played and it's still my all time favorite. Thank you for giving us a glimpse into how it was made, and it's especially interesting to learn about the cut game mode.
Even so many years later this is still the best Kirby game. I played hundreds of hours of it with my little brother.
Kirby Super Star is one of my favorite game, so I'm thrilled we got to hear new info from Sakurai about the game. I have always liked the backgrounds to the game, but it's interesting to hear from the guy responsible for the game that he didn't think the CG background were a good fit for Kirby.
I actually like the surreal nature of the game too and think the backgrounds are neat historically speaking. It puts the game in a period of time, at the cusp of 3D gaming. The rendered backgrounds were an attempt at 3D early on and makes the game part of this trending towards the 3D revolution. Later that same year Mario 64 and the N64 would come out lol.
@@MegaKirbySuperstar Its art direction is definitely a byproduct of its time, which is part of the charm to a lot of older games. Sakurai's experience with CG for Kirby Super Star probably played a huge role with why the Smash series looks the way it does.
Though this game is older than me, It's my 2nds favourite Kirby game in the entire franchise.
the controls in super star was so sick. FIghter Copy ability really did make me feel like i was playing a fighting game. Great Cave Offensive and the Meta knight scenario are my fave moments in the game.
I have to admit, the concept of dividing a game into different sub games was just genius
in this way they were able to cover so many themes and genres without it ever clashing because they are all contained
we got a remake, a standard platformer, a racing platformer, an explorative platformer, a sequenced platformer, and a metroid vania
along with another remake and a speedrun mode in the remake
its just way too genius, why didnt any other game try this approach?
This game has got to be my favorite game of all time. So many fantastic memories playing on the 25th Anniversary disk with my sister all day. Thank you for everything over the years, Sakurai!
man, i really want to play that lost scenario now! kirby with a sealed mouth would be so interesting, hopefully that idea makes it into a future game!
My first video game I've ever played when I was a small child and it's one of my favorite games of all time. Thank you Sakurai for introducing me to the video game world with this.
Amazing Kirby Super Star really did have a huge impact on gaming and the Kirby series in general.
I still to this day have PTSD of trying to find every treasure in Great Cave Offensive. But that was how much I loved the game back then, I wanted to 100% complete every single sub game and find everything possible! Super Star was so packed with secrets in a way that felt genuinely exciting. And the fact that my dad could play along with me as one of the helper characters was so cool. Looking back at it, I definitely see some of the DNA that ended up in Smash Bros, like the shielding, or the suplex ability that allows you to grab and throw foes, or just the sheer ambition of so many different modes and mini games! The music is insanely good, and villains like Marx are still some of the most unsettling in the series. His demonic transformation at the end really catches you off guard in a mostly kid friendly game like this. Truly one of the greatest and most charming platformers of all time.
Oh, and the RPG boss is still hilarious even to this day! I laugh every time I get to that part.
this was one of my favorite games on the snes! a huge part of my childhood, i didn't even know sakurai was the director.
Kirby Super Star was one of the first games I ever played and one of my most played back in the day. Even though I had a GameCube as a toddler, I was still sucked into that game and very impressed with the sprawling world of Great Cave Offensive and the crazy secrets in Milky Way Wishes, to say nothing of some of the best sprites, music, and sound design of that generation. The copy abilities were a ton of fun to play with, and the personality-filled hats were all it took to make Kirby one of my favorite game characters. The co-op was also some of the best fun I had playing a game with my brother, thanks in no small part to the asymmetrical aspects that let him keep up with me even as I rushed through the levels. People can debate which Kirby game is the best but this one will always be my favorite, thank you for all the work you put into making it as good as it ended up.
I'm fascinated to learn that the helper system is what sparked the introduction of Kirby's signature hats. Function leads to form!
Kirby Super Star on the SNES is one of my favourite games of all time. I played it countless times as a kid and adult. It’s a true joy to see the person behind it break down the concepts that made the game so fun and memorable for me.
I’m sure Sakurai will touch on it in his next video. But you can find a lot of Smash Bros. DNA in Kirby Super Star
This might be my favorite video so far!
1:14 This perspective on development is what I live to see. When products end up being massively successful, it's easy to neglect the struggle it took to get there from the public seat, and I'm sure there's many stories like this that go unheard for a multitude of reasons.
My personal wish is to see this kind of perspective from Game Freak, myself.
Thank you for the amazing childhood memories! I treasure them to this day!
Kirby Super Star was my absolute favorite game to play growing up, and the only 2 player game my brother was always excited to play with me. It's very near and dear to me and I still play it to this day.
It's interesting to hear that Spring Breeze was just going to be like Kirby's Dreamland with no copy abilities that definitely would have given it its own flavor.
Yay One of my Favorite Kirby games is finally getting covered by the man who made it!
Hearing the original 6th game in Super Star honestly sounds really interesting in concept for Kirby to tackle on. A lite-horror themed Kirby game sounds like it could be cool in hindsight depending on the execution. Especially not being able to fly nor inhale enemies.
Kirby's Super Star is easily a top 5 game on a console with some of the greatest games ever made. There is a lot to be proud of here. I always love hearing about what ended up being cut from games, that's always really interesting to me.
I love Kirby Super Star! It feels like a hack and slash with how you use combos to take out your enemies. It's so fun! I'm glad later games in the series eventually brought that back.
Not only was this my first Kirby game, but also my best friend and I played the two player mode a ton as kids. Thank you for such a great game and great childhood memories, Sakurai-san.
I hope in the Smash Bros 64 video he shows more details of that prototype or even gameplay
Super Star was the first game I can ever remember playing, and it has a very special place in my heart, thank you Sakurai.
Kirby Super Star was THE most influential game to me and my brother. We made our own make-believe kirby radio station and Super Star has never left our top 5 favorite games. Thank you so much for the lovely times.
Kirby Super Star was the game that kept on giving.
KSS is one of my favorite Kirby games, seeing what happened behind the scenes was a treat. Hyped to see the rest of the development secrets you plan on sharing with us.
*LOVED* this game, I played so much in my youth. This makes me want to dig out the old SNES and run through Meta Knight again.
And the rest of the game.
Nice to see one of my favs covered too! Excited to watch this later.
I still can't believe Mr. Sakurai is almost at 500 thousand subscribers in what, less than a month?!?
That's insane.
That's why Smash Bros is so good. Masahiro has the ability to max out different character feel ingrained into his creative process based on his history with Kirby's skill absorption. No one else could do it like he does.
Thanks Sakurai, for everything
I remember those Macintosh computers. It's so strange to think that some of my favorite games were made with such relatively primitive technology. Today we have emulators, flash memory, network shares... but back then you had EPROM, expensive hardware debuggers, and very little space.
Your best Kirby game and the one you put everything you got.
5:40 Sakurai requests the players to play Spring Breeze without a copy ability, at least the first time. This is something I’ve been doing for a while. Mad respect, Mr. Sakurai.
Definitely one of my favorite Kirby games, and it was a really huge evolution of the series adding many new features and elements. Well, I love this game!
Kirby Super Star is plenty of fun! Interesting to learn more about the game tonight!
I was wondering about the omnibus format the other day.
There was a trend at the time to split the game up, like with Live A Live, and Fire Emblem with its two books and generations. Now I understand it was made so even if you only beat parts of it, you still had a full and satisfying experience.
I always had a feeling Spring Breeze was intended to be played without copy abilities. Every game had a defining trait to set it apart from the other games in the omnibus, with the sole exception of Spring Breeze. It's pretty interesting to find out though. Completely understandable to see Sakurai still not fully coming to terms with that decision even after all these years lol.
Still my favorite Kirby game to this day!
"This is the Kirby that everybody knows."
It was a joy to see it on the Snes mini.
I hope someday we can see the scrapped scenario's concept return!
I can't stop thinking about it now!
Personally speaking, I loved the CGI backgrounds in Kirby Super Star/Super Deluxe! Some of the sets were really beautiful(especially the forest scenes with the reflective spheres in the distance, and Fatty Whale’s stage), and the use of colors was wonderful 💕
I would really love another return to that visual style, especially with a sort of retro pre-rendered style like Super Star/Deluxe has.
I never played Superstar but Kirby Superstar Ultra is my favorite game! I absolutely loved playing it with my friend. Making her the wheelie power so we could ride together was my favorite thing to do.
in my opinion this is the greatest game of all time and i'm very happy to see and learn more about the development that went behind it. i genuinely think this is a 10/10 game with no flaws, the execution, soundtrack, everything is perfect.
My first video game ever and will always have fond memories of it. I still play it from time to time. The experience is truly timeless!
Thank you, Mr. Sakurai and your team at the time for your amazing work. Kirby Superstar really shaped who I am as a person and as a video game player.
With how passionate the fandom is, I wouldn’t be surprised is the cut RPG scenario will be implemented by a fan at some point.
On a side note, I grew up playing both Super Star and Super Star Ultra with my sister. They are memories I will never forget.
we don't really know enough about it to make it though, the description kinda leaves alot to the imagination, was the forest dark green? was it dark out? does the clock have a face? is it just a regular clock that speaks?
Kirby Super Star is my all time favorite video game... It's amazing to see its creator talk about it once again! Thank you, Mr. Sakurai!!
I just finished playing Kirby Super Star on the NSO service yesterday and Masahiro Sakurai, one of the game director gods, talks about it on his UA-cam channel?
Talk about a coincidence!
