    I went to Chile in 2009. As a black American guy, I was stared at like an alien everywhere. Back then, there were no Haitian migrants yet so almost no black people existed in Chile. I traveled from Santiago, Valparaiso, Vina del Mar, San Fernando, La Serena. Valle de Elqui, San Pedro de Atacama. I think the whole trip I saw maybe 4 other black people. So we were a very rare site and the stares started to make me very self-conscious everywhere. Maybe it's different now. I also met a very dark and tall black British woman of Ghanaian ancestry who went to Chile and said she didn't like it because of the constant staring that made her uncomfortable. I still had a good time though and think Chile is beautiful and met some nice people.

      Well Chileans arent racists, they are more xenophobic than racist. For example Haitians are liked while being full black and Venezuelans being only partially black (and others being just like the average latino mestizo) are strongly disliked because of strong cultural differences and other stuff. So the people was just curious I guess.

    Dude, if you do not get to the Andes and to the coast, you are blowing your visit. Valparaiso (called Valpo by locals) area + Temuco/national parks in the Andes are good trips, although Valpo is disappointing because it needs work, like an injection of a billion dollars to retrofit the decaying old city. I guess you are not getting to Patagonia, but that's a trip in itself. I landed in Temuco and of course knew zero Spanish, so I showed a taxi driver a picture of the trees I wanted to see (araucaria auraucana, or monkey puzzle trees, around since BEFORE dinosaurs) and he drove me straight to a lodge in the mountains.The lodge concierge found me a tour off-season (winter) of the trees in the Andes. Spectacular.

      Safety has been deteriorating for the past 15 years, and neither left-wing nor right-wing governments have addressed this problem correctly. Additionally, uncontrolled migration and the lack of opportunities for migrants are contributing factors. However, the problem has its roots in the educational system and inequality. Been to Chile a couple times, it's important to know some Spanish to get around. Santiago, Temuco, La Serena, Pucon. Nice, but it always struck me as being decades behind in some ways, some good some not. Chilean Spanish is pretty much as standard as it comes. Just some specific Chilean words and expressions.

    So you expected it would be chilly in Chile thinking you would need chili to keep warm. But, it turns out it wasn't that cold?

      With a city with almost 7 million people, of course there is going to be a lot of crime. You’re not going to a big city that has no crime.

    there is no such thing as a Chilean "dialect" - it is Spanish. What you have is accent and local slang - like anywhere in the world. Dialects are derivatives of a language not the language itself.

    • @wnorforaneo9821
      @wnorforaneo9821 5 днів тому

      No, Dialect is the way certain people from a region/ territory use a language, so Peruvians speak a Spanish dialect, Ecuadorians another Spanish language, etc. So it is correct to say Chileans speak a dialect too. Most people think dialect means 'language', but it is not what most people think it means.
