  • In this video, Rich explains how to use Melodyne to clean up the performance and tone of an electric bass track. He shows how to quickly remove extraneous string noise. Additionally, Rich shows how to even out volume balances, and fix timing errors, as well as improve poor intonation. Lastly, as a bonus tip he discusses using the Sound Editor to get rid of non-musical, low-end information. This is especially useful to get a tight, but large bottom end in your music.

Celemony owes you because this video convinced me that this is the answer to prayer for correcting the bass lines I create in Toontrack EzBass played on my midi keyboard. So, my new modern digital workflow for bass is: Select EzBass Instrument > Record using midi keyboard > Edit the pitch (if needed) and time and other parameters in Melodyne Studio.

I also liked this presentation much. I use Melodyne to fit commercial musical loops to my original ideas (bass, saxophone loops, poly on guitar chords loops) by changing pitch of individual notes, stretch/shrink, copy notes elsewhere in the melody. The commercial loops sometimes have a very pro finished sound, with Melodyne I can adapt them to my song. So I'm glad you present applications not only to vocals. I purchased the Editor version, so I guess no subharmonic removal for me..

By some sort of magical process, you're explaining and bite sizing Melodyne and all the best functions and applying them. All quick and easy. I already have 5 but you're doing such a good job. This format and Rich is golden. Keep going!

Excellent presentation. I also use version 5 Studio to edit bass as well as vocals and lead guitar. I did not know about the subharmonic method of removal... a very important detail. If I have a bass sound I really love and need the notes extended to fill the foundation, just a little stretching of the note is easy and great sounding. I have also used Melodyne three times successively on the same track to smooth out vocal imperfections that one pass was unable to achieve, bouncing the track after each correction. Version 5 is unparalleled and natural sounding. Imagine not having it! Thanks for sharing

Thanks for the video. Very useful information as allways. But there is more to say about the harmonics editor. And that's so important, because no other tool does it. Instead lowering the booming frequencies in the bass you can look for the harmonics and lower them. In contrast to editing frequencies that are affecting the frequency spectrum of all notes the harmonics only affecting these harmonics of that single tone. Look how many videos deal with the fact how to get the bass frequencies in ballance. That's a huge topic on UA-cam. Wouldn't it be a great idea to make a video about it?

how does Melodyne deal with ghost notes?
ghost notes shouldn't be the same level.
concerned about this approach eliminating the dynamic feel of a bass track.
great video - nice techniques for cleaning up a bass track prior to exporting a midi file.

With Melodyne you have full control over all notes, even ghost notes. If you mean the Leveling macro, it only applies to the notes that you have selected. So if you unselect all ghost notes, you should be good.

For this type of editing is it ok to do this for a track that has a mic on the amp? or is it better to do this on a DI track then reamp ?

Are all of these available in the Essential pack?

Melodyne essential comes with some basic tools for pitch and time editing, so most of what’s shown in the video, can be done with Melodyne essential as well. The more advanced tools are available in our larger Melodyne editions. See also here: www.celemony.com/en/melodyne/melodyne-5-editions
