This rendition retained the haunting, spiritual quality of the original. The Cantus version felt like a barbershop quartet. I prefer this.

This Talisman concert was done in 2012, not sure when the Tiny desk concert (Cantus) was done but it was very early, the guys all look young. However, later, in 2020, near the beginning of the pandemic, they did a much better version, with a larger group, (celebrating their 25 years of singing ) including former members singing individually and technically sliced together the way most choral and vocal groups performed for us during this challenging time. You might want to take a listen to this later version, (doesn't sound like Barbershop to me). I am always moved to tears usually, just with the powerful words and music of Ysaye Barnwell, and she is given full credit for words and music, etc. Just this evening, , this Talisman concert was offered to me by UA-cam, and I was even more moved by this rendition. There is a beautiful descant in the higher voices that is not included in any of the other versions that I've heard. May this be what Vea Kialoa is speaking about above? Just the beauty of not only the lovely woman in the reddish-purple skirt, but this whole group, so young, so sweet and innocent-sounding and -looking. One can hear the honoring of ancestry (her father and legions of ancestors far earlier in time) and of the power of Black female Afrrican-American survival and thriving.
