Hi, Well here is my Hypothesis in DBZ: Buu Saga, Potara Fusion were actually permanent, but Buu as a magical being undid VEGITO Fusion inside his belly. Then years later Potara Fusion got Nerfed in DBS.
Also no god ritual due to the lack of Saiyans, so they'd end up all being clapped by Beerus. A what if with a permanent fusion would be cool if we didn't have to find a way to stretch past that fact lol

It's been stated so many times don't hate me for it ) and they do the dance just right ,they could fuse but it be short due to the insane raw power they'd have
Vegito can fused just not the earrings but the dance I believe he can do. Vegito + Gogeta = Gogito This could had happen In dragon ball superheros since it was two pairs of Goku and Vegeta. But if it is possible the fusion probably hella short like Five minutes or less or maybe could be too dangerous to do. Who knows lol
So if goku and vegeta do the fusion dance and it adult trunks and adult goten do the potara fusion dance they would obviously turn into gotenks and if gogeta and gotenks both fuse together a third time what do you get?

I think there is nothing to misunderstand in your explanation. I also believe that the potara work that way, exept one thing. Elder Kais "only once a life time" could also mean, if a fused being is created due to the potara the two 'materials' can only become the one fused being. So Goku und Vegeta could not use the potara with someone else... but that is only my headcannon - in until shown otherwise in a canon story.
My bad, I'm a little slow. I'm having a hard time understanding what you mean. If you're saying that the earrings can only fuse those two, and never be used on anyone else. It's possible, but wouldn't that essentially still mean they wouldn't be able to fuse again regardless, unless possibly through the fusion dance? I could be misunderstanding you, and I'm sorry if that's the case
According to Toriyama, there's nothing saying it shouldn't be possible. So long as they match their power levels. 🤔 So that's one way to bypass the earrings

Namekian fusion is an obvious yes. And the metamoran fusion is also capable of fusing with another fusion. For the Potara, it depends.
