  • In this video, I take a look at how to send control voltage and audio from VCV Rack to hardware with using the ES-3 module from Expert Sleepers. I start with how to calibrate the hardware oscillators and tune them to VCV Rack with using the Silent Way module for VCV Rack, and then I send 2 sequences and gates to the Neutron, and also audio to Morphagene.

    Here again, January 2023, you give the gift that keeps on giving! So much fun to watch this track evolve. Now we are in the VCV 2 world and the VST version can accommodate more than one audio output module. So I *think* to implement this in a VST instance in, say, Bitwig, you would use one Audio module set to DAW and a second Audio module set directly to your audio interface, presumably ADAT connected to the Eurorack module on your skiff -- ES-3, ES-8, etc. Then route the CV and audio material to the "external" Audio module, collect it back to the mixer from there and output it to the DAW configured module for mixing, recording, and the rest in Bitwig. At least that's the way its looking from the prototype I've got on the go here, now. VST 2 is such a wonderful, superbly enabling upgrade! Thanks again for your inspiration, Omri.

      I'm following both you guys' steps! Buying the ES-3 and ES-6 combo to use with my Focusrite Saffire 18i20 (2nd Gen). This will be my first module so I can explore some Mutable Instruments' modules before buying and actually starting to go deeper on modular synthesis. This is very helpful for people on a budget like me.

    • @OmriCohen-Music
      @OmriCohen-Music  4 роки тому

      Thanks! And yes, I'm pretty sure it's possible through the Clock input. Have a look in the manual and see what kind of signal it expects. There's a chance you don't even need a DC coupled interface (or the ES-3) to do this since it's possible to send clock signals from any interface. I do this all the time with the Keystep, for example.

    Good tutorial, you explain the tuning proces better than Experts sleepers them self, on the audio interface 16 in rack you use channel 3 and up to connect to the es3, on the actual es3 they come out from 1 - 2 and so on, where do you set this up? I guess 1 and 2 in rack are your audio out to your actual interface

    Hello omri as always tahnk you for your videos. I have a question that has been in my head for a long time now, is there a way in vcv rack to convert audio waveform to audio level output ? For example instead of creating a adsr for sidchaining, is there a module that outputs the audio level as a value instead of the waveform ? Could be usefull

    • @OmriCohen-Music
      @OmriCohen-Music  4 роки тому +1

      Hi! Well, I guess that you mean something like an envelope follower? So the louder the audio, the higher the signal? And yes, there are a few envelope followers in VCV, there's is one from BogAudio, one from Vult, and others as well.

      Not a dumb question at all. I'm using Reaper as my DAW and all signals, audio and CV, are going through it. I hope to publish a video next week about how to do this in Reaper exactly.

    Thank you so much for this. One question, if I may. When you needed to retune the Neutron you used two new Silent Way modules. Is that necessary? If I save the SW as a preset as you suggested, could I not retune with the preset? Thanks so much!

      If you look at the upper right corner, I have the audio going into the attenuators and from there to VCV so I can control the levels. I got the ES6 since then and now I have the ES9 so it's less of an issue.

    Looking up the specs on the Steinberg DAC, am I right in thinking you'd need another ES-3 to take advantage of the second ADAT channel? Would one of them be IN and the other OUT? Or is there a wrinkle there that I'm not getting? And, that DAC is not a DC coupled gizmo, right? That Neutron is a *very* serviceable piece of gear, isn't it; particularly for the money. Finally, congrats yet again! The others are right, this is by far the best demo/tutorial on an ES component. Andrew should send you a whole set of his kit... :)

    • @OmriCohen-Music
      @OmriCohen-Music  5 років тому

      First of all, thank you so much, I appreciate the kind words! About the interface, the ES-3 is only working one way so from VCV Rack outside, it will not send signals into VCV (or any other software actually). If I will want to use the 2nd ADAT output, I will need another ES-3, yes. There is another module, the ES-6, which will send signals into VCV. For the ES-6 you will need the ES-3 (or the ES-8) though to work. The Steinberg interface is NOT DC coupled, the ES-3 is. One thing I should mention, since the making of this video I changed my interface to a Motu one, but it has nothing to do with DC coupling or ADAT, the Steinberg was just too big...
      About the Neutron, totally, it's a crazy piece of gear for this amount of money, especially if you're thinking to expand your setup in the future. Let me know if you have any more questions. Cheers!

    • @edwardnixon1782
      @edwardnixon1782 5 років тому

      @@OmriCohen-Music Thanks. Ok, so one final clarification: to go back and forth between the modular/hardware world and the computer, you need something DC coupled, correct? That is one function of the ES-3; then the ES-6 -- for computer IN bound -- relies on the DC-coupled circuitry of the ES-3. But in reverse, i.e., removing the DC prior to sending signal IN to the computer. Is that correct?

    • @OmriCohen-Music
      @OmriCohen-Music  5 років тому

      Well, it depends on what you want to send. With audio, there is no problem other than levels, but this you can solve with an attenuator of some sort. Also with a clock signal it works quite fine without a DC coupled interface. I do this to sync the BSP for example. And yes, you must have the ES-3 in order to use the ES-6. I'm not so sure about removing the DC though, but they work together.

    • @edwardnixon1782

      @@OmriCohen-Music Thanks. It sure is a complicated thing. For example, I find my DAC, a Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 -- has SPDIF in and out via phono-style plugs plus one ADAT or SPDIF in via optical. So that is a whole other set of ES modules and questions about channel capacity and bandwidth. Subject for a complete video tutorial set -- now that you've made the software/hardware integration path *so* attractive! :) Thanks again. Best.

    Hi Omri, many thanks for this video.
    Actually I own a Neutron, and with your videos I learn a lot of Eurorack.
    At this point I want to go into Hardware Eurorack but I can't afford much modules to start at this time.
    One of the modules that I was thinking about to buy is ES-8 module (which have USB connection), to have DC coupled CV/Gate Ins and Outs, and sending out the main signals of Neutron (with a Mini Jack TRs to a TRS 1/4 cable) to my audio interface (Focusrite 4i4 2nd Gen) for record my sounds into my DAW (which is Ableton Live Suite)
    Hope you can answer this question, and manu cheers to you.
    Thanks!

    • @OmriCohen-Music
      @OmriCohen-Music  3 роки тому

      Hi! Well, the Neutron is a great way to start with hardware but I'm not so sure that an ES-8 is a good companion for it. I mean, you can control it with Midi from Ableton and just send the audio back through your interface so the ES8 will not change so much. Yes, you will be able to send more modulation but do you really need it? I would wait a bit longer, maybe save some more so you could get a small case with some other modules, and then maybe get something like the ES8 and send everything to your computer. Let me know more or less what you would like to do and I'll see if I can help you further.
