- Can't get any easier than this. Changing plugs, wire, coil and PCV valve on a Mazda Protege. Error code P0421 and P0300. Just some work I had to do on my kids car.

Just bought a Protege5 and on the way home i had hesitation during takes off, light load while cruising, and sometimes with the brake depressed during stops. Eventually the car threw a P0300 code, after searching the web i found your videos and this morning i just did everything in this video (plus, wires, coil packs, and PCV valve) and sure enough when i went to drive it right after it drove amazing, no shutters or hesitation during the test drive. Keeping my fingers crossed but it looks to be that i have fixed the problem thanks to you!! Thanks a ton for these videos people may not show their gratitude but your views should speak for themselves! On behalf of the internet "Thank you"
Thanks for watching, I really appreciate the feedback!
I actually had the intake actuator solenoid and 2 cylinder misfires. Replaced the solenoid. Ran fine till it got hot, then boom like crap! Replaced the plugs, and now it's worse. I'm 99% sure now its the coils and wires.
This was exactly what I was looking for and after watching your entire video, I went outside and replaced the two coils, four plugs, and wires in 35 minutes. Not bad for a rookie, but would have spent a TON more time without your helpful video. THANKS!.
Your video saved me over $300 in labor costs. I should send you a check for part of the difference ;-)
Excellent Video! I've got a 2001 Protege 1.6L. I'll do the sparkplug change now - your video gave me confidence. Thank you!
You are a great mechanic teacher, please keep helping people like me accomplished goals.
Also, I will appreciate if you can mention the tools you normally use.
Thanks a lot!
Thank you but I just tinker.. No mechanic here. :)
Dude you saved me again with another Protege fix. Very nice video!!! You did a great job on explaining how to change the spark plugs and you gave me the confidence to tackle this project. I changed everything on the car today and it's doing great. Thank you and Happy Holidays!!!
Happy holidays and thank you for watching!
@@Johnnysshop Happy Holidays to you too. You still don't have the Protege do you?
No :(
@@Johnnysshop o man :/ it would have been cool to see how the car is now and any new projects you would have on it.
I wasn't sure how to replace my PCV Valve...but now I'm going to do it for ALL my friends with crappy old cars!
Hi, This is a great video, I have 2002 mazda protege lx with the same engine. I need to change my radiator, valve cover gasket and other repairs aswell. Please keep making videos of the repairs if you happen to work on this model again. I already subscribed to your channel. This is a great help and Thank you so much for your effort on uploading this knowledgeble video.
+Anish Ghimire Thanks, I appreciate it and will do!
We’re those videos regarding the radiator and valve cover made ?
Thanx for video did what u said n car is running great...almost took it to a garage to have it done but after watching ur thorough video i was like i can do it...u saved me some money thanx for video again
Awesome to hear!
Thanks just got this car and been looking for a how to on changing spark plug, subscribed.
This video saved me so much money thank you
All of this worked perfectly on my 2003 Mazda Protege 5. Thank You!
I just want to say I am glad I found this video because I just picked up a 02 mazda 5 2.0L and there aren't too many help vids for this car. Im used to GM never owned Japanese and I couldn't figure out where the darn plugs were. WOW they are right there.
FTR I just bought the car for $700 184,000km and everything works great on the car, only rust. Passed emissions too. Anyway glad I know someone with basically same car..Im sure I'll be back with questions lol.
This was a great video. Thanks so much.
I found out it was the cruise control solenoid, that thing is damn huge!
Thank you for the help in changing my spark plugs now oil and a belt
+sharon lopez Thanks for watching, I appreciate it!
I JUST did this thanks to your video. You rock.
Thank you for all the information good job 👍
Sweet I have the same car with the same codes p0300 and p0421 this video has helped, thank you verrry much!!!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you. Easy to understand used it to change engine coils on 05 mpv.
Thanks for watching, glad it worked out!
Thanks for posting this video. I going to try this myself this week. Looking forward to the egr valve video
Thanks for watching, let me know how it goes!
It went without a hitch thank you! I couldn't have done without your vid. My next project will be the EGR valve
Scott M Awesome!
nice video. easy to understand plus this a MONEY SAVER!!!!!!. thanks.
Thanks for watching!
great video. thank you.. 2003 mazda protege myself..
Thanks for the good lesson and video work. Got a 1999 626 lx. Only got 20MPG after a lot of work. Haven't replaced the spark plugs or wires or coils. That will probably be the next, or in this case, last thing ill do with this car.
+jose2bee2 Thanks for watching!
Old video, but very informative - been told by a friend my coils might need replacing, as i got hesitation when accelerating (already did spark plugs beforehand, with no result) :) the only thing i don't find available for my model (a 2000 323 s 1.5 glx) is a pcv valve, even when checking online parts stores
i can say, that coils and wires helped my problem go away :)
Hey man, thank u so much. I bought my self a 99 protege 1.6. The car needs exactly what u did!! Omg! Im gonna do the job this week. Looking forward to it since its my first try EVER! Just a question, do u unplug the battery before starting the job? Thanx boss
Tryin this soon as I get home!
Great video thanks for sharing. I have a mazda protege 5, 2003 and it needs the same replacement like your car. I am assuming that my car has a very similar engine like your car. Am I right since I haven't checked it yet?
perfect. Thank you so much!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you, it was a very helpful video to my mazda protege 2002, although now i have a issue with the large wire, the old one broke and one piece is stuck with the plug ignition and now I can't pull it out for replace the new one. I thought i'd need a special tool to take off the wires because they are really pressed and that's why I pulled them and broke it.
No special tools, sounds like it was frozen on. Pry it off if you have to.
Thank you for this video sir
Thanks for watching!
i brought my 1999 Mazda protege to the shop today because of a Misfire cylinder 2 code...but they could not find a misfire!!! they did reset the code, and it is not flashing anymore....Should i replace my Plug wire sets and the ignition coil as well as the pcv valve just to make sure? Car has 1.6L engine and 230,000 miles
Thanks for the video man ! I have a 2002 Ford Lynx, basically a re-branded Mazda Protege, so this is mighty helpful, also the egr video is great ! I don't know if anyone have point it out but, this is the first time i saw a car tutorial video that looks so cinematic it belongs in a movie :P What camera do you use?
SuperAria18 Oh thanks, I really appreciate that! It's a Canon HFS30
Good video clarity wise but you should check for dirt or debris down the spark plug holes before you install new plugs as I have a 2002 Protege and do it myself. A long hemostat locked on to sticky bubble gum works well to get any dirt out of it without chancing it going into the cylinder and then lock a small piece of cloth to wipe it dry. Also be careful jerking the spark plug wire off the plug as the wide insulator at the bottom can come off as mine did the other when changing them.
What tools are needed to just change the ignition coils?
i have a 2000 protege will the steps in this video apply to my car?
thanks for sharing very informative for someone like me lol
Thanks for watching!
Really great video, i used this to help me do a complete tune up for my engine along with your video on the egr valve to fix a rough idling an stalling issue. However after changing the spark plugs, wires, coils, and pcv valve my car started alright and while driving had the check engine light blinking and i immediately came home to see if maybe i had made an error and could fix it. I came to find the plug that goes into the coil came loose, not the ones for spark plug wires but the small gray one on the left. It doesnt really plug in all the way it would seem and if it even starts to come loose the engine doesnt handle it so well and we have problems haha. So my question is if that is the problem like i believe it to be, is there a way to fix it to get the plugs in tighter and more secure to ensure i dont ruin my car while driving? Thanks for any help
You may have to crimp down the actually connector a bit or push the plug down with some needle nose. A few of them can be really tricky to get all the way in.
very helpful thanks.
Thanks for watching!
At 0:25 whats the big canister thing just in front of the oil dipstick? Very informative and great video, thanks mate
What is the proper name for those black plugs above the spark plugs that you changed? I've done a tuneup before on my boyfriends car and I didn't know we could change those. I'm trying to find them at AutoZone but I don't know what they're called. You call them coils but I don't see those a on their website. Thanks!
this video was very helpful. could you do another video with starter and distributor?
+San Andres R Thanks for watching! If my kid still had the car I would :(
How much does it cost to replace the pigtails and connectors? Is it easy to replace them yourself?
hey, i have a 2003 , protege, and the conectors, on the coils broke, i need a pic or video of the sequence of the wires on each coil. thanx
who ever you are thanks and godbless :))
Thank you so much for the video. I actually did whatever you did today on my 2003 mazdaspeed protege. However, I didn't get to change the PCV valve. I changed everything else, but when I shut off the engine of the car and then turn it back on it wont start. I would have to charge the battery? Any thoughts?
Hmm. Could be anything. Make sure the coils are seated. Is it turning over but not starting?
I've got a 323f sport (same engine I think) and I had the same trouble with that coil pack. Maybe the left one is common to fail.
Also, do you need to do the spark plugs up that tight?
Must be a common fail. They don't need to be really tight but you don't want them loose. It's a good idea to smear some anti-seize on them also.
That's not common. if you put a dab of grease inside the plug boot, it won't be stuck. Spray WD-40 on plugs before installing. you could put a shot in boot too & rub around underside of rubber where it meets the engine block.the torque specs s not that tight on plugs -- best to go to finger tight" then w/ratchet one more half-turn.
Do you know what the recommended sark plug type on this car is. ( like single platinum, double platinum, copper, etc.)
XxAnimeFreaKxX I typically just purchase whatever was original to the car.
Please explain how tight he plugs should be . If you over tighten the plugs,The threads will pull out with the plug. I could see that when you pulled the first plug out. If a plug is frozen . Tighten and loosen it with a back and forth motion . DO not force it loose !
Thank you for this video, I have a 2001 Mazda Protege 1.6l giving off a couple of different codes. My brother, who is my mechanic, is thinking we should try this first after I had a cylinder 3 misfire. Its giving the p0106, p0171, and the p0303 code. Do you think there is anything else he should check to fix these codes?
Thanks for watching! I would trust your brother, I'm not mechanic. Just a hobby for me :)
***** great vid..I have a 2002 mazda protege lx and I think my starter may be on its way out..have u dealt with this problem on this car before and if so how much of an involved job is it..from my point of view it doesn't seem to be easy to access like my 1988 camaro..any advice would help..and I can't seem to find a repair book for this car..lol..thanks!
Dumb question but where did you go for your parts? Auto zone want like $200 for all the parts
Advance Auto. That seems a bit high..
I got it but thank you. Your video helped a lot
Michael Wright Thanks for watching!
if I have a 2003 Mazda protege and the check engine light came on and the code was 300 could this be the problem as well
It could be.
Do you have any videos on changing the wires for this car? My car's tail lights and a few other lights in my car are going out and idk why
+Anthony Saenz Unfortunately I don't :(
You dont torque the plugs?
I just changed the wires and the spark plugs and noticed my car is idling higher than before. The intake box has a broken latch and doesn't close tight. Should I replaced the box or tape it shut?
I'd replace it but you could try some tape in the meantime.
i had a broken wire coming from a plug going to coil it has touched other wire and sparked now no spark thinking ecu
Question? Do you have to un-plug the battery before changing the spark plugs?
+Composer Jamie Coleman You're supposed to but I never do.
Quick question: Do the plugs, wires, and coils have to be the same brand? Does it make any difference as long as all parts are of good quality?
Thank you SO much for this - I've a 2001 Mazda Protege and I'm definitely going to do this myself following your video!
This probly wont help to fix 303 n 421? Would it?
Thanks for the video. Nicely done. Did this fix the codes? If not, did you ever figure it out. I have the exact same codes on my 2001 2.0 with the check engine light flashing. I know it could be many different things. Coil, wires, EGR, injector, valve, catalytic converter, etc.
Thanks for watching! It fixed most of the codes and the rough idle. The catalytic converter was throwing the last code, the car has two or more (can't remember), it was the very front one that was throwing the last code.
@@Johnnysshop what did you do about the front catalytic converter code? I have one on a 2000 Mazda protege. I have really rough idle at stop signs and lights. Any advice?
@@OneKyngTV I just left that code. Have you checked the coils? It has two, ours seemed to go through them every few years.
Johnnysshop I’ll check into that. Lately every time I swing the key to start it doesn’t start on the first try it only clicks what could be the cause of that?
Would the connections benefit from electrical grease?
Yes, for sure.
Hi, can you post a video on how to change the alternator? On this vehicle
Kasia Smith Unfortunately it doesn't need one at the moment but if and when it does, I sure will!
The car in the vid is not crappy at all, btw. I drive a Mazda and didn't mean for my words to come out like that lol.
Thanks
Thanks for watching!
So did you fix the p0300 with the tune up?
Yes
when u get codes p0300- p0304 shortly afterwards u get code p0421
LINKS to the parts please.
very lucky in nether burnt igniters out blew a 10a fuse under dash thank god
os this the same for progete5?
As long as it's the same motor.
what size socket
5/8 spark plug socket for the plugs.
thanks - helped me learn about the pcv valve. but TBH, this takes longer than 7 minutes. the vid with all the edits and "be right back" is 11:00+ just unrealistic, esp. a beginner or someone doing for first time to expect it'll just take a few mins. 'Bout an hour I'd say.
Hi, @SMB. I saw you struggle to loosen the plugs, which can indicate over-torquing. Here are a couple tips to try next time for tightening spark plugs.
All modern spark plugs already come from factory with a specialized anti-seize coating, it's the shiny metal plating you see on the treads. So don't add wet anti-seize before tightening them to the dry torque spec.
To torque them to spec--which is about 18 ft.lbs.--finger tighten the spark plugs until you feel them touch the cylinder head and begin to resist turning. At that point, use your ratchet to turn them a further 1/2 of a turn (180 degrees). This is for brand new spark plugs only. If you are putting used plugs back in, only re-tighten with 1/12 of a turn after re-installing. (30 degrees)
i have the 1.6 and it have 2 coils
FYI Anyone looking for good parts this is where i buy most of mine :D They are cheap as dirt and stuff is just as good. Ive purchase a fan assembly, module, filters, etc all have been great and have saved me a crap ton of cash www.partsgeek.com/ymm/2003/mazda/mpv.html?search=&x=67&y=27
I can't stress this enough because it ended up costing me $140 do NOT buy the Bosch Iridium Plugs! Although they fit your car the heat range is not right which will cause the engine to misfire. I put these on which worked at forst but started misfiring as I was driving along I had to take it to a shop annoying since I ended up having my top speed at 30 because of so many misfires. They said that, that was the problem and that I believe NGK were the right plugs for my car but I don't complete remember just don't make the mistake I made.
+jshmddx Funny you should mention this, I just had to replace the plugs 2 weeks ago! Ended up spending the extra cash.
The NGK or Bosch?
+jshmddx Bosch. Lasted 3 years...
First
Hey man, thank u so much. I bought my self a 99 protege 1.6. The car needs exactly what u did!! Omg! Im gonna do the job this week. Looking forward to it since its my first try EVER! Just a question, do u unplug the battery before starting the job? Thanx boss
You should just to be safe but I didn't. Thanks for watching and good luck!
Allright.. chears man
***** Do you know anywhere to get a new ignition coil for a good price online for 1999 mazda protege lx?
i actually bought them from the dealer ship, n guess what? they didnt have it , had to order them from japan which cost lots of money and time.
